There have been major changes around the Hart household since last month. We’ve moved from The Heights to Oak Forest. I know, not a long move but it was a big move for us. We’ve downsized from a two-bedroom cottage to just two rooms plus a bathroom. There were a lot of personal and family treasures that we had to decide whether to take with us, put in storage or give away. Cindy and I aren’t hoarders but we had accumulated a lot of stuff over the past 15 years living in one place. So, we are moved now but still settling in. Cindy is still unboxing and deciding where to put or hang some of our treasures that we were able to take with us. Our basenjis and our Tibetan spaniel are also getting used to their new quarters. The official address is still on West 19th Street, so that at least hasn’t changed.

Spring is fully here and with it a bunch of events and activities. Check out the event briefs in the front of the magazine and the calendar in the back. We have several new advertisers who are featured in this month’s issue. When you visit them, be sure to mention that you saw them in Natural Awakenings.

he Heights is not just West 19th Street. On the corner of Lawrence Street and West 22nd, under the clock tower is Kraftsmen Baking. The building was originally a textile factory built in the 1890’s.

It still has a 19th century industrial feel but is bright and cheery with lots of windows and long white curtains. The bakery café serves coffee, tea, baked goods plus breakfast and lunch. They are open until 6 pm.

Cindy and I decided to try their quiches. Yes, real men do eat quiche. She chose the southwest quiche and I chose the vegetable. They both came with a salad. Mine was very light and fluffy with a mild creamy texture. Cindy reports hers was scrumptious and very smoky. The salad featured a variety of lettuces with a cherry jalapeno vinaigrette dressing.

The café is only a small part of Kraftsmen’s business.

They also sell their bread and baked goods wholesale and supply many of the area’s finest restaurants with both breads and desserts. Next time you are in The Heights, plan to drop by Kraftsmen for a cup of coffee, a snack or a full meal.

Whole Grains Help Us Eat Less When overweight adults exchange refined grain products such as white bread and pasta for whole-grain equivalents, they tend to feel full sooner, eat less, lose weight and experience a reduction in inflammation, the journal Gut reports.

Researchers from Denmark’s National Food Institute and the University of Copenhagen studying 50 adults at risk for Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease found that test volunteers realized these benefits by eating whole grains, and rye in particular.

A Harvard study of 325 women undergoing fertility treatments found that those consuming the most produce high in pesticide residues, such as strawberries, spinach and grapes, were 18 percent less likely to become pregnant and 26 percent less likely to have a live birth compared to women eating the least amount of pesticide-laden produce. Study co-author Dr. Jorge Chavarro suggests that women trying to conceive should eat organic produce or low-pesticide choices like avocados, onions and oranges.

A tool I pick up and use time and time again is the mental equation that “Progress = Happiness”. It has been a long-standing mantra I have used to shift my mental and emotional states when worry begins to creep in. It is a simple saying yet, when applied in the moments when our self- sabotaging mind seeks to have us focus on what is going wrong, what is not happening fast enough or what is too much to bear, it becomes the lifeline that we can easily use to pick ourselves back up out of habits of worry.

The simple, yet profound strategies and tools I share here have helped thousands of people take their power back and create stellar, worth high five celebrating progress in their lives. It is my hope these tools will also help you.

Have a Daily Plan

Even the most ‘go with the flow’ person agrees that there is energy in a daily plan. The joy of the check mark is real… and we can use it as fuel to create steady progress. Monitor your wins, look to see what you are accomplishing and not only those things you are not accomplishing. Start your day with what is working, what is great and what you are grateful for and you will be able to fuel the rest of your daily plan with positive energy.

Bad habits can drain us and leave us feeling confused, spent and hopeless. Bad habits, you know yours of choice, can appear in any area of our lives; health, money, relationships, career, business and even spirituality. Most often people identify a bad habit as one that wastes a resource, like time, money or health. Look around, inventory your bad habits and get a plan to gain control back from

When we let our own self honoring boundaries go, we give our power away and sabotage our own progress. here is nothing as exhilarating as standing in a huge expanse of natural beauty and feeling connected to all that is.

I felt that way when I was at Joshua Tree National Park a few years back with a friend – we couldn’t see any other people or cars and there were no cell phones to stare at, no computer screens to draw us in. It was a magical moment.

I get glimpses of that moment even when I experience nature on a smaller, less dramatic scale. At least once a day, I take the time to step outside and soak it in – REALLY listen and look and connect -- and I can sense my body rhythm slowing down and my mind feeling at peace. “Earthing” is a great way to do this quickly.

There are many reasons but I believe the most important reason is that it connects us to ourselves – we are natural living creatures, just like the trees, birds, sky, animals around us. As Mary Oliver wrote in her poem “Wild Geese,” – “Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -- over and over announcing your place in the family of things.” Nature is our family and communing with it is like coming home.
