The Generosity of the Holderness Family Dear Friends of Holderness, In my 17th year as head of school, I continue to be humbled and inspired by the generous nature of the Holderness family. at generosity of spirit is manifested in lots of ways, including through the sharing of individuals’ and families’ meaningful donations and volunteer hours. is year, we are producing a special Report of Appreciation to thank all of you who make the transformative Holderness experience possible for students and faculty, today and into the future.

In this report, you will read about some of the ways your generosity is at work in the community right now. e Vestry, for example, is a voluntary program (comprised of over 50 students!) that serves our local community and has grown through partnerships with alumni, parents, and friends. Programs like this are possible through and because of your investment in Holderness School; you are empowering students to take up the school’s motto and mission, calling them to work and lead for the betterment of others.

Holderness LEARNS, an innovative professional development program, is also possible thanks to an anonymous donor who saw the potential of a professional learning community at Holderness and wanted to help build it. e resulting in-house, end-of-the-year program will encourage collaboration and support among faculty and will generate a common language and set of tools they can use as they work together in service to our students.

In this report, you will also read about the importance of the endowment to our school’s future. One fact that is worth noting is that 59 of the 116 endowed funds support scholarships and financial aid, providing much-needed aid to talented students, artists, and athletes every year. Fortunately, these gifts can take many shapes and forms, and we continue to work with more and more people who want to make planned gifts to support endowment, including

Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of this Report of Appreciation is the section that highlights how many of you support our school every year. ere are an impressive number of Holderness families who have given consecutively for 10, 20, 30, and even 40+ years. ere are also a few classes that consistently record participation rates above 50%, which is also a positive statement about their continued connection to Holderness.

We are grateful for every donor and every donation, no matter the size, for you have an immediate impact on the Holderness experience.

Supporting a Circle of Gratitude

Dean of Faculty Tobi Pfenninger P ’11 ’15 takes her turn giving blood at the annual blood drive while Anna Jones ’18 keeps her company.

Service leadership is the lifeblood of our school; in fact, it is part of the school’s mission, and through the Job Program and Project Outreach, students serve this community on campus and in the greater world. e work of the Holderness Vestry program takes service leadership one step further, bringing together a voluntary group of students who are committed to serving others in their free time.

Led by school chaplain Rev. Rich Weymouth ’70 and Dean of Students Kathy Weymouth P ’01 ’02 ’04, the program emphasizes service and spiritual growth through fellowship and action. Our students serve as chaperones for Holderness Central School ski trips, make care packages for service members who are connected to the Holderness community, organize blood drives, and raise money for disaster relief efforts. Additionally, many students volunteer at the Bridge House, a

homeless shelter in Plymouth that has served veterans for more than 20 years. ese student-driven opportunities complement traditional events like the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, the school’s largest charitable fundraising effort, which takes place every other year. Students far exceeded their goal the first year in 2012 and now raise more than $30,000 biannually. In fact, Holderness students have raised more than $150,000 since the school first partnered with the American Cancer Society. Students have also raised money for the Wounded Warriors Foundation, the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer, the One Love Foundation, and local organizations that are committed to reducing the stigma around mental illness. is year, 56 students attended the club’s first meeting. So far, they have raised $2,000 to support those impacted by hurricanes in Texas,

Florida, and Puerto Rico, and in October, Abby Wiseman ’18 and Aldie Anderson ’18 organized a blood drive in which 67 students, employees, and parents donated 54 units of blood. e manager of the Lakes Region American Red Cross said this was the largest school donation in his territory!

“When I started running the blood drive my sophomore year,” says Abby, “I started to realize the resources we have here to help those around us. e student body here wants to make a difference and Vestry makes that accessible.” As a side note, history teacher Andrew Sheppe ’00 moved his Enlightenment and Romanticism class to Gallop Gymnasium during the blood drive so that Abby could attend class and lead the blood drive at the same time! rough the Vestry, students learn valuable, tangible skills such as cooking and working with young children, reaching out to local busi-

nesses to ask for donations, and recruiting and scheduling volunteers. ere is also a deeper, more profound component. “ere is a world out there that needs them, and one they can make a difference in,” says Kathy. “ey learn that they are truly privileged and the rest of the world is not.”

Take, for example, Aldie Anderson ’18. “I have been an active member of the Vestry for four years now,” he explains. “I have helped run the blood drive, cook at Bridge House, and much more. I have stuck with the Vestry because of how thankful people are for your help and services, and it makes me feel a true sense of fulfillment.”

The Vestry’s largest effort this year has been the renovation of Joseph Michael Hayes’ house in nearby Holderness. Joseph has worked at Holderness School in the kitchen

for nearly 50 years (a school record!), and the Vestry, with help from professional contractors, intends to finish renovations in time for Joseph to move in when he retires at the end of his 50th year in August.

Rich says this project has brought together the entire community in ways he has never seen before. What began two years ago as an idea to help a colleague in need has grown exponentially. Steve Rand ’62, who owns Rand’s Hardware in Plymouth, donated edge and belt sanders.

Local builder Van Adriance P ’86 ’88 GP ’17 ’20 ’20 ’21, rebuilt the foundation of the barn and straightened the walls. Ashland Lumber has offered discounts on supplies. Director of Food Services Paul Dullea has provided snacks for students and adults working on the house. e school’s football team as well as Buildings and Grounds have also stepped forward, along with

a number of local carpenters, contractors, electricians, and plumbers.

For the students, this work has given them the opportunity to swing a hammer, use a drill, or hold a paintbrush, but more importantly according to Rich, it has given them a chance to participate in a vision, to see projects through to completion, and to help out someone in need. It’s part of what he calls a “circle of gratitude,” where you feel grateful while you are serving someone else.

You too are part of this circle of gratitude.

Ensuring Full Student Engagement e Holderness School endowment is a collection of more than 100 funds that is crucial to the health and growth of our community.

Along with tuition and the generous support that we receive for the Holderness Fund, endowment income contributes to the financial foundation of the school.

Holderness has a proud tradition of careful planning, and this conservative strategy both protects donors’ gifts as well as allowing us to remain sustainable and flexible during uncertain economic times.

More than half of the school’s 116 endowed funds support scholarships and non-tuition financial aid. Non-tuition financial aid provides assistance for clothing, books, laptops, tutoring, Senior esis research, family travel, participation in athletic training and competitions, and student events and experiences. is ensures that students can fully engage in every aspect of campus life.

Named scholarships—which can be funded through a donation of cash or securities or a planned gift such as a charitable trust or bequest—honor alumni, parents, past students, and former faculty. One of the school’s newest scholarships honors Jim and Loli Hammond P ’79 GP ’14, who arrived at Holderness in 1962, right out of college and Jim’s stint in the Army. Jim taught Spanish, and the young couple became dorm parents to 36 boys in Rathbun until 1966, when they went to Barcelona for a year and then to Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania.

Jim and Loli returned to Holderness in 1976, this time living on South Campus; Jim served as chair of the Language Department and coached football and lacrosse until his retirement in 2000. During his long career at Holderness, Jim earned a lovable reputation as the faculty’s most unpredictable member—riding a motorcycle, speaking in different accents, jumping into an icy stream during Out Back, and famously impersonating then Headmaster Pete Woodward in front of a group of new stu-

dents. While Loli was an active member of the Holderness community, she also ran a business in Plymouth called e Berries that sold gifts, fabric, and jewelry.

A scholarship in their name is the gift of alumna and former trustee Elizabeth Heide ’85 and her parents, Ulf and Betsy Heide.

Another legendary Holderness couple honored with a named, endowed scholarship is Don and Pat Henderson P ’72 ’74 GP ’05, faculty from 1951–87. Don was a premier four-event skier (slalom, giant slalom, Nordic, and ski

jumping) in the United States when he graduated from high school; he would have competed in the Olympics if they had not been interrupted by World War II. Instead Don joined the Army and fought in the Italian Alps with the 10th Mountain Division, where he was wounded in battle, ending his Olympic ambitions.

However, he went on to an illustrious coaching career, and from 1956 to 1984, every Winter Olympics included at least one athlete coached

Don was also instrumental in creating the school’s Eastern Ski Program. Craig Antonides ’77, the current director of the program, says: “Coach Henderson had quite a stable of high-level racers in his day. In addition to dominating the interscholastic circuit, his teams had some of the top skiers on what we now call the USSA/FIS circuit, and he realized that we needed to have a presence there. It was also about the time we branched out to train at a few of our local mountains (not just the ski hill). Don figured out it would be best to hire some outside help in order to have everything set up and ready when we got to those mountains—maximizing our time on snow.”

At Holderness, Don and Pat were active members of the community and became thoughtful guardians to countless students.

Don’s use of primary sources and his careful inspection of history inspired many a student to develop a lifelong love of history, while Pat’s devotion to the first female students at Holderness made the transition to coeducation much easier. She also dedicated years of service to admissions, where her warmth, sense of humor, and professionalism drew countless families and students into the Holderness community.

Holderness is accepting gifts in recognition of both the Hammonds and the Hendersons. 75% of the money raised through the Henderson Endowment Initiative will go to the Henderson Scholarship Fund and 25% will go to facility endowment.

Endowed funds like the Hammond and Henderson Scholarships continue an important tradition of giving and provide consistent support for faculty, students, and current programs.

We are extremely grateful to the generous benefactors who establish these funds and to the many individuals who continue to support them through additional contributions. ese gifts, large and small, help ensure the quality of a Holderness education. •

Financial Aid at Holderness r In 2016–17, Holderness School awarded more than $3.4 million in financial aid. r 35% of our student body, representing eight states and six countries, received financial aid. r 66% of students on financial aid were named to the High Honor Roll or Honor Roll or received three or more Excellent Efforts in one quarter (some received as many as seven Excellent Efforts!). r 50% of seniors on financial aid were elected school leaders.

was probably the most stabilizing thing a ship without a rudder could do, for without, a sailor cannot set his course. I am very proud of our blended family, for it, along with sharing, brings satisfaction.”

During one of my parents’ sober periods, I convinced them that I needed to go away to school. ey took me to visit Pomfret and Holderness. I chose Holderness and was fortunately accepted. e small classes, excellent teachers, work program, and sports gave me the confidence and education I needed to succeed in life. I also have to give a great deal of credit to Don Henderson, my ski coach, who became a wonderful model and mentor.”

HOLDERNESS SCHOOL

Building a Professional Learning Community Faculty are the lifeblood of the Holderness experience. ey teach, advise, guide, coach, lead clubs, and direct dorms. is multifaceted work enables faculty to build deep and meaningful relationships with students during a critical time in their development.

We believe that specialized training and feedback for faculty enhances student learning, so we offer support for a wide variety of professional learning activities, including conferences and workshops, pedagogical and course development, and the pursuit of advanced degrees, sabbaticals, and other learning opportunities both on and off campus.

However, many of these opportunities take place on an individual level and therefore only influence the teaching of a limited number of faculty. With this in mind, Director of Teaching and Learning Dr. Nicole Furlonge saw an opportunity to develop a program that encourages learning and collaboration among the entire faculty, fostering common understandings that will help them work together in service of student learning. us the creation of Holderness LEARNS— Listening, Engaging, Asking, Reflecting, Networking, Sharing—our own in-house, end-of-year think tank, which will give all Holderness employees the opportunity to engage in important professional growth work with their colleagues at the start of the summer. is professional learning community signals a shift in thinking, something that appealed to a generous and anonymous donor who made a three-year commitment to launch the institute. is individual recognized the possibilities of creating a common knowledge base and the importance of scheduling it after the school year, when faculty have time to dream, question, design, and experiment.

Each year, Holderness LEARNS will focus on a key area of education, such as mind, brain and education research and its impact on curriculum design, stereotype threat, inquiry-based learning, experiential learning, and giving and

receiving of feedback. e theme of the inaugural institute this June will be the science of learning. We will ask how new developments in the field of brain research inform how we learn and, given that, how we should teach. Faculty will focus on this topic within the context of a boarding school education while sitting side by side with trusted colleagues and drawing on and expanding their collective expertise. e donor’s gift will provide for small seed grants that groups of faculty can request through proposals to help support the development of ideas that are generated through their participation in the year-end meetings. e mini-grant could cover research and support materials, visits to schools, consultations with educators at other schools, working meals/gatherings, and the cost of formatting work to make the group’s thinking public to other faculty, staff, and students in the Holderness classroom. rough the donor’s generosity, Holderness will also be able to create thinker spaces, furnished with furniture that encourages

collaboration, including small conference tables and whiteboards. ese spaces will be located in Alfond Library and will be available during the academic year for student groups during evening study hall when faculty are not using them.

As the program grows, Holderness will look to invite thought partners to present during the institute and develop partnerships with lead thinkers from colleges and universities and other dedicated educational institutions. e donor’s vision and thoughtful gift comes at a critical time, when our current demand for professional development exceeds our budget; it also supports a new initiative that will benefit the entire faculty from veteran teachers to those new to the field. We are truly grateful to this individual and to all donors who are helping us produce the best learning environment we can. •

paul and marty elkins were part of the Holderness community for a combined forty-one years.

Through teaching, coaching, and dorm parenting, they tirelessly gave to students, faculty, and friends. But the Elkins didn’t stop giving to Holderness when they moved on. Instead they became members of the Balch Society, supporting the school for as long as the doors of Schoolhouse remain open.

Supporting Holderness Through Planned Gifts Giving back is a core practice at Holderness.

Alumni, current and past parents, grandparents, and friends offer their time and knowledge—planning events, hosting students, supporting the Holderness Fund, cheering on athletic teams, serving as Senior esis mentors, and speaking on campus. Despite a long and distinguished career, Chris never really left Holderness and has been a tireless supporter for more than 40 years. He has served as a reunion volunteer, as the president of the Alumni Association, and as a member of the Holderness Board of Trustees since 2007. As a trustee, he has lent his energy and wisdom to the Finance, Investment, Board Governance and Nominating, Advancement, and Strategic Planning Committees. For two years he even led an Out Back group.

Chris is also a Holderness parent—father of Annie ’08—and since 2008, Chris and his wife Karen have made generous challenge gifts to support the senior class gift, inspiring philan-

donut sales, the Class of 2017 raised more than $10,000 to renovate and revitalize the student space in lower Weld. “Both Karen and I take great pleasure from our involvement as part of the Holderness family and want to perpetuate the strong core values that Holderness instills,” says Chris. “e Holderness experience was transformational for me, and I saw the same impact on Annie,” Chris adds. “As treasurer of the board, I have a strong understanding of the need for gifts to sustain and advance the school.” With this in mind, Chris and Karen recently made a planned gift that offers long-term benefits both to their family and to the school.

Chris transferred the title of a condominium he owned in Maine to a charitable remainder unitrust. When the trust terminates, the assets remaining will be distributed to Holderness. “is planned gift allowed us to make a much larger gift to Holderness than we ever

thought possible,” explains Chris. “e structure allowed us to donate the condominium and sell it within the trust without paying capital gains taxes on the appreciated value. e trust provides an income stream to us for our lifetime, and we received a charitable deduction upon creation of the trust.”

Today, Chris and Karen live in Falmouth, ME. Chris recently retired from the Sunday River Ski Patrol, but he still races Etchells sailboats and plays golf. e couple spends part of the year in Florida, where he enjoys golf and fishing, and Karen plays golf, tennis and pickleball. ey enjoy the theater and the Pops and look forward to their two ski trips in the West.

Chris and Karen also make sure to leave time every day to walk their Golden Retriever, Emerson, to the beach and dog park.
