Experience Selva Verde!

“

Selva Verde is a beautiful and relaxing setting. We were there four nights and found the rooms very pleasant, the food and service excellent, and the birding spectacular. — Dan C.

Selva Verde is a fabulous place and we have seen and learned so much. In just three days we have seen huge iguanas, an armadillo, three types of frog, two of them the poison dart variety, a keel billed toucan, hummingbirds (precioso!), striped squirrels, many different types of butterfly, kiskadee birds, lizards, golden orb spiders and the type and variety of plant life too numerous to list. The colors, shapes and forms of these glorious plants are mind-blowing. — Hilary M.

The Selva Verde Story In 1984, during the course of running a birding program in Costa Rica, Giovanna Holbrook came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered. The owners wished to sell the 500 acres of mostly old growth forest and had already begun cutting some of the trees for lumber. When Giovanna saw a 900-year-old tree lying on the ground, she realized that appreciating nature and sharing its wonders with others was no longer enough—she also had to play a part in protecting and caring for it. It took almost one year to raise the money, but by 1985 Giovanna was able to return to Costa Rica and buy the land. The once endangered forest became a private rainforest reserve and one of the country’s first eco-lodges, Selva Verde Lodge and Rainforest Reserve. Selva Verde now plays an important role in the San Juan-La Selva Biological Corridor and the greater Mesoamerican Biological Corridor initiative, a proposal to create a corridor of protected habitats extending from Mexico and Belize all the way to Panama. 18

Holbrook Travel in South America ARGENTINA From the Andean northwest to the lush grazing grounds of the plains to the vast and awe-inspiring Patagonia region, Argentina is a richly beautiful nation with a wide variety of terrain. BRAZIL This Portuguese-speaking nation occupies almost half of the South American continent and is home to pristine beaches, Amazonian rainforests, bustling metropolises and incredible landscapes. CHILE With the driest desert in the world and massive glaciers, Chile is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise, but it is also a cosmopolitan nation with impressive literary and cultural traditions. ECUADOR Man, animal, and plant cohabitate Ecuador’s mountains, rainforests, and shores in a delicate balance. PERU Peru was notably home to the Inca — an ancient civilization that thrived from the 12th century to 1532, when it was conquered by Francisco Pizarro. Best known for their mountain-top citadel, Machu Picchu, the Inca legacy was built by civilizations like the Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Moche, and Wari who set the foundations for their Empire.

I just wanted you to know how thrilled we were with each and every day of our trip. Our tours were wonderful. Holbrook Travel in Africa KENYA The classic safari destination. There are few better places in Africa to see lions, leopards, elephants and the famous wildebeest migration than Kenya. But its fascinating wildlife is not just relegated to the land; Kenya also ranks as one of the top birding destinations in the world. TANZANIA Much of the 23,000-square-mile Serengeti plain lies within the borders of Tanzania. This vast expanse of savannah is the site of the largest and longest overland migration in the world. In a biannual event, more than 2 million herbivores, including more than 1 million blue wildebeest traveling in herds of thousands, follow the autumn rains 500 miles south across the Mara River to Tanzania, where they remain until the return journey in the spring.

Words cannot describe this program to Africa. From the time we were picked up at the airport and until we were escorted back to the airport to leave this wonderful country we were given 5-star hospitality. Our group leader’s only concern was our happiness and he went out of his way every day to make sure we had a wonderful time. Our accommodations and food were excellent. Our drivers were safe and made sure we saw everything that the savanna has to offer. If you have any doubts about going, don’t. Go, you will remember it for the rest of your life. This was my TRIP OF A LIFETIME!! — Rita S.
