We've also seen glimmers of hope shining on the horizon, as travel has opened up again with safety precautions in vaccination, regular testing, and effective implementation of masks and distancing. Our travelers are returning to the field once again, supporting the livelihoods of our local guides and partners, and enjoying the kinds of meaningful, transformative experiences that only travel can bring.

We hope to see our student travelers rejoin us in this spirit of learning and connection that takes place when young minds set out to explore a classroom beyond walls and screens. For many of us, enduring the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic has disconnected us from a part of who we are. As we turn toward an optimistic future of travel on the horizon, Holbrook is committed to ensuring the utmost safety and security of our travelers. Together with our in-country partners, we are closely monitoring the situation in each of our destinations, and adapting our policies in accordance with the latest public health recommendations. Below are some of the ways we are responding to the new realities of travel.

Small groups, off-the-beaten path

Expanded protocols for peace of mind At every step of the process, we’ve expanded protocols to ensure traveler confidence and protection.

In the planning phases, we’ve adopted flexible booking terms and extended final payment deadlines. We’ve made adjustments to itineraries to minimize time in high-touristed areas. On days where we do visit hightraffic areas, we plan to go at off-peak hours or visit an alternative location.

Upon request, we also offer travel protection, including Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage, through our insurance provider.

In the field, we’ve worked closely with our in-country partners to develop enhanced health and safety measures for sanitation, distancing, and mask use. Our in-country group leaders receive enhanced training on safety guidelines and food-handling best practices. In addition to face covering, washing hands and frequent use of hand sanitizer are simple and effective ways to prevent the spread of coronavirus. We revisit our policy and adjust as we monitor local situations and public health protocols. As always, we strive to make your experience in the field enriching and memorable.

We have always operated small groups with private transportation to minimize impact and maximize engagement.

But we also recognize the growing importance of traveling in areas that are less touristed. With an expert guide and driver exclusively in service of the group, following our strict safety protocols, this allows for a more personalized experience in addition to limiting contact with others outside the party.

A careful approach to student group travel While many academic institutions restricted travel this past year, a handful of schools and educators took to the field starting later in the year. They followed strict protocols and returned home without incident. Perhaps because the opportunity to travel was so appreciated, many participants cited these trips among their “best ever.” As we move ahead to navigate this changing landscape, we continue to work closely with our partners and client organizations to operate safely and responsibly.

Owned and operated by Holbrook Travel, Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve is your gateway into a magical world of towering Almendro trees, mantled howler monkeys, and Keel-billed Toucans.

Located just two hours from San José, Selva Verde provides easy access to the wonders of the rainforest.

In 1982, while running an expedition in Costa Rica, Holbrook Travel’s founder, Giovanna Holbrook, came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered.

The owners wished to sell the 500 acres of mostly old growth forest and had already begun cutting some of the trees for lumber. When Giovanna saw a 900-year-old tree lying on the ground, she realized that appreciating nature and sharing its wonders with others was no longer enough—she also had to play a part in protecting and caring for it. Giovanna placed a deposit on the property on the spot and then embarked on an adventure that continues to this day.

Designed for student learning Selva Verde Lodge and Rainforest Reserve provides an exceptional natural backdrop for learning. Selva Verde’s private reserve is the perfect basecamp for educational field programs in ecology, conservation, community development, and culture.

Suitable for all levels of learning, the site is equipped with classrooms, dormitory accommodation, Wi-Fi, and a basic wet lab facility, ideal for annual student studies in a variety of research applications.

The Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center (SCLC) was established in 1993 by Selva Verde founder Giovanna Holbrook and her friend and fellow pioneer Bertha Carter.

The SCLC is a non-profit organization designed to foster opportunities for mutual exchange between visitors and local people through cultural activities and service projects.

Students can participate in SCLC projects like environmental education, rural tourism activities, English classes, reforestation projects, and community outreach.
