normous energy price E increases and impending raw material shortages

At Holbox, we believe in working on the future. The people of Holbox are decisive, thorough and, above all, have a no-nonsense mentality. Our new building perfectly matches these values. In line with our ambition to become a footprint reduction company, we are fully committed to sustainability.

Sustainability is more than a core value for us: it is in our DNA and is embedded in our products and business processes. We are already working on sustainability on a daily basis by using wood and paper products with the FSC and PEFC quality marks, using sustainable raw materials in our production process and our own sustainability ID. CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) runs like a green thread through Holbox’s future. This means that many new techniques will be implemented in the new building. Sustainability is very normal for us. And not something we do on the side. Indeed, we don’t just talk about it all day, we get to work on it. For all the generations that will come after us.

THE ROAD TO MAXIMUM SUSTAINABILITY A BEAUTIFUL NEW BUILDING With the development of Holbox, we are outgrowing our premises. To guarantee the continuity of Holbox, we are building a brand new and larger building. In June 2024, we will move to Roermond and leave our current premises in Echt. In Roermond, we will be realising a CO2-neutral building with an even greater focus on sustainability. And that’s why we’re working on the future, now! Interested in what we’re doing?

AMBITION

At Holbox, we believe in working on the future. We employ and work with ambitious people who do not shy away from hot work. This hands-on mentality ensures constant growth for Holbox, which is the reason for our move. In the new building, we are fully committed to sustainability, in line with our ambition to become a footprint reduction company. Sustainability is more than a core value for us: it is in our DNA and is embedded in our products and business processes.

PACKING We do not grow and build alone. We do it together. Together with our employees, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders. In this phase, we will not only be packing removal boxes, but also enthusing everyone involved at Holbox, to look forward to 1 June 2024.

03 24

The foundations have been laid; we have a sustainable building and a sustainable production process. But there is a lot more to be done. Day in, day out, we continue to develop and professionalise our organisation and product. With our new premises in Roermond, we are ready for the future together with our employees, customers and suppliers!

UNPACKING After packing comes the unpacking. Not only the removal boxes, but also everything related to the new construction project. We will be taking big steps forward in the field of sustainability, while also celebrating the move to Roermond. Will you be there?

READY FOR THE FUTURE

5

The first fieldwork has been done Less than six months ago, Holbox took an important decision: we are moving. Barely six months later, work is already underway at Morgenstraat in Roermond. The soil survey has been completed and the project is now in the permit process. “At some points, piles have to be driven, at other places, the ground has to be raised by three metres”, says Martijn Hol. “The first stone of the fully circular building will be laid in January

INSTORE inspiration magazine

next year.”

6

Energy-neutral is the key word in the design of the new location. The building, which will be more than twice as big as the current location in Echt, will soon be covered with solar panels. Martijn: “Three thousand of them, that covers our electricity needs. We could install twice as many, but that would be a disinvestment because we don’t use that electricity yet. We certainly have the opportunity to grow even more in the new premises.” In order to comply with energy neutrality, production will take place in daylight hours as much as possible. “But we are already working on storing this energy in so-called battery containers. With these containers, energyneutral production can also be achieved outside daylight hours. In this way, the building and the situation can be adapted to what is optimal for us.”

Room for everyone

Transparent The building measures 27,000 square metres, with production and storage taking up most of the space. Departments that produce noise (CTP, printing, coating, technical service, punching) will be housed on one floor. On top of that, complete rooms will be located, including Shop Direct and the design studio. “From here you have a full view of the production floor. That transparency is very important to us.”

But this innovation and hightech equipment must not become a deterrent or a hindrance. Martijn: “It is important that we guide and train people in this, just like in implementations with new systems. Look at the transition from paper to digital payslips. If people have difficulty coping with this change, we have to guide them and make them familiar with the system. Sometimes this is overlooked too quickly. There is a place for everyone at Holbox.” n

In the middle of the hall there will be a central highway. “That’s where the automated and unmanned forklift trucks will run”, explains Martijn. “It will have a high-tech look. We are the market leader in Europe and will remain so. You have to embrace that position, because both staff and customers see it as a challenge. It will make everyone work more innovative.”

First prize for sustainable innovation L’Oréal Germany By modifying existing display designs, Holbox won the first prize at the “L’Oréal for the Future” Supplier Day. With the innovative idea, Holbox reduces shipping volume by at least 50%.

y modifying existing display designs - through more compact, not fully assembled delivery of cardboard displays - shipping volume is reduced by at least half. By redesigning the floor display and making it foldable, among other things, 4.5 times as many displays now fit on a pallet. This means a considerable saving in the number of transports - and thus in CO2 emissions.

Patty Post Salesmanager Holbox

INSTORE inspiration magazine

“We are really super proud of this great result. L’Oréal is a major partner that has established its own golden rules in the field of sustainability. That triggers us to take a good look at them. Winning this prize shows that we share L’Oréal’s sustainability philosophy. And that is of course a great compliment!

In addition, the construction is so easy to assemble that the display can be placed on the shop floor in no time at all. This re-design has contributed to the fact that instead of 4 displays on a pallet, Holbox can now load 18 displays on a pallet. On an average journey of 400 kilometres, the new design saves as much as 600 litres of diesel. This results in a reduction of 2,234.4 kg of CO2 emissions. Ultimately, this means that Holbox saved 89 trees. During the first L’Oréal for the Future Supplier Day held by L’Oréal Austria Germany, suppliers were invited to take part in a competition to submit projects addressing the themes of climate, water, biodiversity, resources or solidarity-based supply. Holbox won the first prize with concepts that focus on reducing transport movements and CO2 emissions. n

The L’Oréal Groupe has been driving an ambitious sustainability agenda for years with the first dedicated sustainability programme “Sharing Beauty With All” launched in 2013. In June 2020, the Groupe followed up on it with its second sustainability programme “L’Oréal For The Future”, a transformative agenda guided by climate and environmental science that extends clear and measurable Group goals to the entire value chain, including producers and consumers. The programme is based on 3 pillars: 1 Transforming L’Oréal and respecting the planetary boundaries (with clear and measurable objectives regarding climate, water, biodiversity and natural resources), 2 Empowering L’Oréal’s business ecosystem (which includes focusing on the indirect, comprehensive impacts related to, for example, suppliers’ activities and consumers’ use of their products) and 3 Contributing to solving the challenges of the world (this includes among others an impact investment fund seeking to promote circular economy business solutions and innovative packaging and recycling options). n

Myth: “Only recycled paper is sustainable”

Fact: Fresh fibres from responsibly managed forests are necessary for the paper cycle. It can generally be said that recycled paper has less of an environmental impact than paper made from fresh fibres. However, paper and cardboard cannot be recycled endlessly.

INSTORE inspiration magazine

“FRESH FIBRES FROM RESPONSIBLY MANAGED FORESTS ARE NEEDED TO MAINTAIN A SUSTAINABLE CYCLE”

10

Source: Papier Recycling Nederland

he whole recycling process makes the paper fibres shorter and weaker. A fibre can be recycled up to seven times, after which it is made into toilet paper. Wood fibre is the main raw material for paper and cardboard. These

fibres are obtained from wood and waste paper. By now, waste paper is the main source of new paper and cardboard. Without fresh wood fibre, there will be no recycled wood fibre - and no paper cycle. By recycling paper, the quality of fibres decreases.

Life cycle Sustainability consists of various factors: raw materials, production, transport and use. When choosing the most suitable paper type, it is important to look at the life cycle of a paper or cardboard product. This includes also responsible forest management, forest growth and fresh fibres. Another important factor is the intended effect of a paper or cardboard product. All these requirements influence the choice of paper, including whether it should be recycled paper or made from fresh fibres.

Holbox sustainable materials Holbox uses the most sustainable materials for all displays. And these materials always originate from responsible forestry. The cardboard we use is therefore 100% recycled. The types of paper that Holbox uses are also as sustainable as possible, but always contain a percentage of fresh fibre. This always reduces the total proportion of recycled material. Our displays therefore always carry the FSC Mix quality mark, because we use two types of materials. n

Holbox is certified for FSC Mix. This means that we purchase 100% FSC paper, and because different materials are combined in production, this is valued with FSC Mix Credit. Source: Paper Recycling Netherlands

INSTORE inspiration magazine

As a result, the paper industry needs fresh fibres from responsibly managed forests to maintain a sustainable cycle. Partly due to the production forests of the wood paper industry, the forest area in Europe is growing. Since 1950 it has even increased by 30%. Forests are carefully cultivated, harvested and replanted. A fresh fibre therefore also contributes to the growth of the European forests.

Holcomplet The indispensable link in your supply chain By choosing Holbox, you are not only choosing for sustainability and knowledge, but also for unmistakable, creative and smart designs without losing sight of functionality. If so desired, we can take care of the entire process from A to Z: from the creative process in which the POS material is created to the setting up and filling of the displays, quality checks, and the logistic process to the DCs, so that your display can go straight to the shop floor. This creates a very fast time-to-market. Full-service partner Because we have all disciplines under one roof, we can guarantee fast lead times and know exactly how to set up the displays professionally and fill them with your products. This also prevents displays from being set up incorrectly, or not at all, on the shop floor.

We provide full-service logistics and end-to-end solutions of the highest quality so that the products reach the shop floor in the most sustainable way possible. This not only saves an enormous amount of CO2, but also directly contributes to a greener world.

Road test We want to be sure that a fullyfilled display reaches the end point in good condition. That is why we subject every display to a so-called road test during the development process. The display is filled completely and put on transport. It is then driven for a full day in one of our trucks. On its return, we check the display. If necessary, we optimise it further so that it survives the transport without damage. n

Durable solution for promotions Holbox is launching the first reusable cardboard display and is thus taking the next step towards maximum sustainability. With this display a solution is offered for the many changing promotions on the shop floor. New promotion? New sleeves. The basic display is the successful 2 Second HANGIN Display that is “dressed up” by means of a separate communication sleeve. The basic display can be reused at any time by simply replacing the sleeve for a promotion. The basic display may be standard, but the sleeves give you creative freedom! The most diverse sleeves can be developed, nothing is too outlandish.

Supply chain

100% sustainable

There are many possibilities in terms of transport. Because the 2 Second HANG-IN Display has a unique construction, it can be sent as a compact package. This saves on transport costs. Of course, it is also possible to deliver the display set up and filled on the shop floor.

The 2 Second HANG-IN Display with sleeve is made of 100% FSC cardboard and is fully recyclable. At the end of its life, the display can be disposed of in its entirety in the paper container, ready for recycling and reuse. n

“After several test cases, Shop Direct was the best partner for us!” During the period when 24 ICE was developing their POS materials, they soon came to Shop Direct. “After several test cases, Shop Direct was the best partner for us”, says 24 ICE founder Nick van Kampen. The cooperation has grown into a lasting partnership. At the time of writing, they are working on a new display for the Greek market. Where does Shop Direct excel in according to Nick? “Keeping their promises. This allows us to focus on other projects within the company. Especially in these times when raw materials are sometimes hard to come by, it’s great that Shop Direct keeps its promises in terms of delivery time and quantities. ASK ABOUT THE VARIOUS POSSIBILITIES

Sustainability is an important issue for everyone. Companies are increasingly committed to goals such as reducing CO2 emissions, environmentally friendly production and sustainable use of materials. Transparency and credibility are very important in this respect; showing consumers what you are doing as a company with regard to sustainability and also being able to demonstrate this. This is where the Sustainability ID proves its worth. By scanning the QR code, all the materials used in the production of the displays are shown. The ID fits in perfectly with the pursuit of chain transparency and the facilitation of sustainable POS materials.

The latest innovation in the studio: parameterising. Danique Franssen is working on the standardisation of displays and their components. The new tool Danique is writing will make the design phase a lot easier - and above all faster. “It takes some time to develop, but in the end it will save a lot of time”, concludes the display designer.

Parameterising: takes some time, but saves a lot more For the time being, it is not yet about entire displays; that is still a bit more complicated. What is important is that time can be saved. “No need to draw everything again if a size has to be changed. Suppose a product changes and so the display has to be changed. Then you only have to rebuild it by entering the desired numbers. Then everything is adjusted immediately and you don’t have to redraw the parts.” In the future, it will mainly be about standard items such as brochure trays, displays, display parts such as a base or tube. With a few clicks, the item in question is ready immediately and no longer needs to be drawn up. n

INSTORE inspiration magazine

“NO NEED TO DRAW EVERYTHING AGAIN IF A SIZE HAS TO BE CHANGED”

n the end, it’s all about the fact that displays and parts can be designed in Autocad with just a few clicks. Example: “I have now made a standard counter display. The tool makes sure that you only have to enter the inner dimensions. The program adapts the design immediately. And it also takes into account the thickness of the various materials.”

Holbox Gliwice fully operational

28

Team Poland has managed to get the new plant fully operational within four days. The new factory in Gliwice is running well, says plant manager Marcin Majchrzak. “Everyone worked on a public holiday and the weekend during the move. We couldn’t have achieved this without their efforts”, beams Marcin.

One of Marcin’s secret weapons is the calendar. “We have been operational from 10 January 2022. We deliberately chose that date because 6 January is a public holiday in Poland and 7 January is a bridge day for most companies. That means there was little traffic on the road. So we could transport our machines without problems and traffic jams. We managed to move and reconnect everything in four days. With the exception of two machines, we were fully operational by the tenth.”

Delivery “After the move, we still faced a big challenge. We had to leave the old location in perfect condition. We had two weeks to do this. We were ready on the day of delivery; perfect timing.”

Century

Capacity

Recently, the Gliwice plant has purchased two new Century punching machines. In the meantime they have been delivered and are fully operational. “With three Century machines we can easily punch continuously. They also only need one operator. That saves us in personnel. We had also already hired a quality manager: Rafał. He is fully engaged in the quality of our production and delivered goods. Just like Frank in Echt. Last week, a warehouse/purchasing officer was hired who is responsible for both the warehouse and the purchasing of production materials.”

Marcin says that the team in Poland can handle more work. The previous location was bursting out of it seams, there was simply no room. The new factory facilitates eleven loading docks. There were three at the old location. “This is a big improvement for us. We can now load and unload many more cargoes at the same time.” Whether the factory in Gliwice will be able to cope with production when the head office moves from Echt to Roermond? “Yes definitely it can!” n INSTORE inspiration magazine

“THE TEAM IN POLAND CAN HANDLE MORE WORK. THE PREVIOUS LOCATION WAS BURSTING OUT OF IT SEAMS, THERE WAS SIMPLY NO ROOM.”

Award-winning displays

After a pandemic pause, the Display Superstar Award celebrated its great comeback. The industry competition crowned the best POS promotions and display solutions of the past year. Holbox received the bronze award for the Haribo display!

ECO Sleeve

Holbox is turning its back on the plastic packaging bag. True to our motto, Yellow is the new Green, we now offer a sleeve for the 2 Second ELLIPSE Display. Instead of the traditional polyethylene packaging bag, we have developed a sustainable sleeve.

Green is POSsible

In order to produce as little waste as possible, we use the inserts from the printing press, which would otherwise be discarded and end up with the waste paper.

Our displays are everywhere!

Our displays are not only used on the shop floor. They also attract attention at trade fairs in Barcelona and London, for example! INSTORE inspiration magazine

After many decades of producing displays, we continue to challenge ourselves and take a closer look at existing displays. Where do we see opportunities for sustainability and improvement? The pop-up construction of the arch with square totems has become more sustainable through further development; we have been able to reduce the amount of material, as well as the uniformity of the material; 100% FSC, 100% sustainable!

Tadese & Mhammed in action

Paul van Riesen from Vluchteling aan Zet speaks

It is almost impossible to imagine: giving up your home and ending up with nothing. Being without a job and without social contacts in a country where we do not speak the language. Tadese from Ethiopia and Mhammed from Syria were in a similar situation. The two men - separately, incidentally - had to flee their homeland. Cooperation between Vluchteling aan Zet and Holbox gives the two newcomers the opportunity to rebuild their lives here.

INSTORE inspiration magazine

“They are incredibly motivated to work”, says Paul van Riesen of Vluchteling aan Zet. Tadese Temesgan Tsaedu, as his full name, named after his father, spoke Tigrinya, Arabic and some other languages, but did not fully understand the Dutch language completely. “Every morning, he makes the long journey from Linne to Echt on his bicycle. Always on time, whatever the weather”, Paul adds. His motivation? A new football shirt for his daughter.

32

“WORKING FOR A NEW FOOTBALL UNIFORM FOR MY DAUGHTER” Tadese Temesgan Tsaedu

“WORK FOR MY WIFE AND CHILDREN” Mhammed Fayad

After a trainee period of four months, Tadese was offered an employment contract by Holbox. “We then offered him an electric bicycle. That motivates people”, Paul continues. “Until he gets his driving licence in a few years’ time. He said that the electric bike will then be for someone else who needs it. Tadese is going full steam ahead, although there is still some work to be done in the area of communication.” Fortunately, both Vluchteling aan Zet and Holbox support this. Every Monday afternoon, language lessons are given to non-native speakers in the Holbox canteen.

Intrinsic motivation Mhammed Fayad lived with his sister and did not receive any benefits. “He wanted to work and said: ‘if someone gives me a chance, I will work and I will show that I can do it’. Through the guidance of Vluchteling aan Zet, he gained these insights about working in the

Netherlands because Holbox is his first paid job since he has been in the Netherlands for 7 years. And he has done so. And he did. After his internship, Holbox saw that Mhammed had much more to offer. He goes to the doctor and simply shows up at work the next day with his arm completely bandaged. Mhammed high intrinsic motivation is driven by the thought of his wife and children. If you have such a high commitment to do something, you are motivated to work and have a vision, the rest will come naturally.”

Vluchteling aan Zet Vluchteling aan Zet was born in 2016 from a passion to guide asylum permit holders through the bureaucratic integration jungle towards self-reliance. Paul: “We put the asylum permit holder or newcomer at the centre and start from the premise of integrating as quickly as possible into the Dutch labour market. This way, we promote independent functioning

and life in our country. To us, certain things are very normal, but to them they are extra exciting because in their country of origin they never had to deal with these matters. We talk about work ethics, health insurance and personal contributions. In addition, we deal with questions with them about employment contracts; what does it say and why do I have to sign it? Based on our role as process counsellor for the municipality, we try to help newcomers as best we can to become independent and self-reliant in the Netherlands as soon as possible. Because of their social involvement, we have found Holbox to be a good partner.” n

Enormous energy price increases and impending raw material shortages

34

For two years now, we have all been confronted with circumstances we did not know about. The Covid pandemic has required a degree of creativity from all of us to meet challenges. However, these are now being surpassed by Russia’s war against Ukraine, which, in addition to being a humanitarian catastrophe, has many consequences for the entire economy, including our industry.

s a direct result of the conflict, energy and working capital costs are rising at an unprecedented rate. These increases are putting severe pressure on the sector. The loss of electricity imports from Russia, the collapse of Ukrainian paper production and the temporary stoppage of paper machines are endangering the paper supply in Europe. In addition to the rise in paper prices, this also affects other raw materials:

ISSUE 11

Important raw materials for starch for the glue we use are extremely scarce and, as a result, their prices have risen dramatically. Our focus is on delivering your display orders on time.

Natural gas

Energy prices have exploded and in some cases multiplied. The corrugated cardboard industry itself, as well as the corrugated base paper manufacturers who supply it, are highly dependent on natural gas as an energy source. The first companies in the paper industry have already temporarily or even completely stopped production due to the increase in the price of gas.

Diesel

The available freight capacity has become even scarcer due to the additional lack of drivers. In combination with the huge increase in the price of diesel, this leads to considerable price increases for transport services.

Despite all the described setbacks, we are in a stable position. We therefore assure our customers of delivery reliability even under the most difficult circumstances.
