Aquí están cinco ideas de caridad para considerar en este día de San Valentín. Ser Voluntario. Siempre hay maneras de ayudar. They have done a lot to help and sending letter of appreciation is a small act packed with lots of love. If you’re feeling extra romantic, include a donation in the envelope. Give Gifts That Give. There are dozens of charitable shopping sites and online nonprofit stores selling gifts for a good cause. Save the Children is a great place to provide a donation. They serve impoverished, marginalized and vulnerable children and families in more than 120 nations. They work to save and improve their lives. Ros-Lehtinen: U.S. must suspend from and loans to Nicaragua

Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen urged the government of President Barack Obama to immediately cancel all loans to Nicaragua as a punishment for irregularities during the presidential election. Ros-Lehtinen, who chairs the foreign relations committee of the House, said the United States “needs to stop talking and just ask for greater scrutiny of loans from the Nicaraguan government.” The BID expects to submit a vote this year for five Nicaragua loans totaling $ 615 million.

uchas veces he tratado pacientes con “Claudicación intermitente” causada por la enfermedad vascular periférica que tuvieron oculta y a veces avanzada. Estudios han demostrado que pacientes con Enfermedad Vascular Periférica tienen alta mortalidad... similar a algunos tipos de cáncer! La razón es simple: Infartos al corazón. El tratamiento de las obstrucciones de las arterias de las piernas, para aliviar el dolor al caminar, es tan importante como la prevención de infartos al corazón. Anticoagulantes como Aspirina y Plavix y medicamentos que disminuyen el colesterol (como las “statins”) deben considerarse en TODOS los pacientes con Enfermedad Vascular Periférica. Una prueba de ejercicio, tomando la presión

arterial en los tobillos antes y después de caminar, es muy importante en el diagnostico y en el seguimiento de estos pacientes. Una evaluación precisa se puede obtenerse usando el ultrasonido, MRA o CT scan. El plan de tratamiento se formula después de esta evaluación. Angiografía con contraste para visualizar las arterias se hace en el hospital. Si el paciente es candidato para Angioplastia, stents o láser, el procedimiento se hace en ese momento. Los pacientes se van a la casa el mismo día o a la mañana siguiente. any, many times I have seen patients with Claudication due to Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) who had silent heart disease, sometimes advanced. Studies have consistently shown that patients with PAD have decreased survival... similar to some types of cancer! The reason is simple: Heart attacks. Treating the blocked leg arteries to relieve the pain when walking is as important as preventing heart attacks. Aspirin and/or Plavix as well as cholesterol lowering meds must be considered in all PAD patients. The latter includes the use of “statins” for a goal LDL cholesterol of 70 mg/dL or less. A Walking Test, with pressures taken at the ankle level before and after walking, is extremely important in the initial diagnosis and

follow up of these patients. Then, using Ultrasound, MRA and/or CT scan, a precise non-invasive evaluation of the leg arteries is possible. Treatment plan is formulated at this point. Contrast angiography (direct injection of dye in the arteries) to visualize the blood vessels is done as outpatient in the hospital. If patients are candidate for angioplasty/ stents/laser, treatment can be done at the same time. All non-surgical options are commonly performed at Memorial Regional Hospital’s Cardiac Cath Lab. Discharge home is either the same day or the next morning. La Importancia de la Limpieza Dental: “Prevenir es mejor y más barato que curar”.

a mayoría de los pacientes acuden a la consulta cuando ya tienen molestia o dolor, y generalmente cuando esto sucede, el tratamiento requerido es mucho más extenso y costoso. Una vista al odontólogo de control o limpieza dental, debería incluir la toma de radiografías, un examen clínico completo y, por supuesto la revisión de los dientes y las encías. En esta visita se hace la limpieza de dientes y se educa al paciente sobre la importancia de mantener una buena higiene bucal y se detectan caries o enfermedades. Muchas personas presentan enfermedades, como la caries dental y la inflamación de encías (gingivitis y periodontitis) y se han acostumbrado a convivir con ellas, a pesar de que cada vez existen más evidencias de que la enfermedad bucal afecta considerablemente nuestra salud general y bienestar. Acudiendo regularmente al odontólogo (dentista), se pueden prevenir las enfermedades de la boca y darles tratamiento temprano.

Así, los tratamientos que necesitemos serán sencillos y económicos, si los comparamos con lo que sucedería si no vamos con frecuencia al dentista y dejamos que se produzcan daños más graves. Para darles un ejemplo claro precios de mi consultorio: Restaurar una caries pequeña con resina ($120 a $170); si la caries es muy profunda y requiere un tratamiento de conducto: $950 a $1,200; una corona sobre el diente fracturado o un molar con tratamiento de conducto: $750 a $950; una extracción dental cuesta de $180 a $250. Mientras que una limpieza sencilla (sin enfermedad periodontal) cuesta solo $89. En otras palabras, Prevenir es mucho mejor que curar y el costo del tratamiento es mucho más grande si acude al dentista con dolor. Piense ahora, ¿Cuanto se ha gastado en la peluquería, en las uñas, y en la belleza en este año? El costo de una limpieza es comparable al costo de una visita a la peluquería. Por todos estos motivos, le aconsejo que no deje pasar más tiempo y visite a su odontólogo, pues por lo general las enfermedades de la boca son de avance lento y muchas de las enfermedades de a boca se pueden prevenir y controlar. A regular check up appointment, or “cleaning” should include x-rays and a complete exam of all your teeth, soft and hard tissues to allow early detection of oral disease. At this appointment, the patient should also receive oral hygiene education and obtain information about his oral condition. Most patients that have cavities or periodontal disease have become accustomed to living with this condition because of fear or because they can’t afford the costs of dental treatment. It has been demonstrated that periodontal disease or gum disease adversely affects the body and the overall health. Researchers have found that people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease. The costs of dental treatment could be easily reduced when the patient goes to the dentist for regular cleanings. The early detection of disease and conditions normally translates into savings because the treatment needed is less expensive and less invasive when detected early. Here are some examples of the costs of some dental procedures so can understand my point better. (These prices are the actual prices charge at my practice,

assuming no dental insurance). If you have a small cavity, and the tooth has to be restored with a small tooth colored filling, this may cost you between $120 and $170. If the cavity is bigger and the tooth needs a root canal and a crown, we are now talking about $ 950 -$1,200 for the root canal only, and additional $850 to $950 for the crown (for one tooth). If you decide to get your tooth extracted it is between $180 to $250. If you later want to get your lost tooth replaced with an implant, we are talking about $3,000 per tooth. In contrast, the cost of a regular cleaning (without periodontal disease present) is only $89! As you can see, it is less expensive to prevent disease than to treat it. If you come regularly to your dental appointment you will be saving a lot of time and money in the long term. Not having dental insurance should not be a reason for you not to get your teeth cleaned. Many people spend more than $89 in a hair salon, nails and in beauty treatments and they normally go more frequently to the salon than to the dentist. Receta de San Valentín Valentine’s Day Recipe Hay muchos restaurants fantásticos en nuestra área pero si decide cenar adentro, trate esta receta con esa persona especial. There are many wonderful neighborhood restaurants but if you decide to stay in, here is a good one for you.

Bon Apetite!

Entrée: Mussel a la Amour (mejillónes) • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil • Spoonful of “I can’t believe It’s butter” • 1.5 cups leek, sliced into thin half-moons, white and pale green parts only • 1 small bulb fennel, cored and chopped or thinly sliced

(about 1 cup), plus a few fronds for garnish • Kosher or sea salt • 1-2 pinch saffron threads • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves • 2 (or more, if you’re solo) fat cloves garlic, peeled and smashed • 1/2 ounce (1 tablespoon) Pernod or other anise liqueur • 4 ounces (1/2 cup) white vermouth or dry white wine • 1 cup crushed tomatoes with juice • 1 pound mussels, scrubbed and de-bearded 1. Look over your mussels and discard any that have cracked or broken shells. Melt the butter in the olive oil in a deep, heavy-bottomed pot with a lid over medium heat. 2. Add the leek and fennel, season with a pinch or two of salt, and cook until softened. 3. Clear a space in the bottom of the pot and add the saffron. 4. Add the garlic and thyme, stir, and cook just until you can smell the garlic. 5. Add the Pernod and vermouth or white wine, stir, and let cook for 2-3 minutes before adding the tomatoes. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 20-25 minutes. 6. Add the mussels, stir, re-cover the pot, and cook for another 5-8 minutes or so, just until the mussels open. Discard any mussels that don’t open. 7. Spoon the mussels, vegetables, and sauce into a big, wide bowl – two, if you’re sharing. Sprinkle the fennel fronds on top, and serve with plenty of crusty wheat bread. VOILA!
