Now you can learn basic computer skills in Spanish at the Evelyn K. Davis Center

Des Moines, IA.- Computers have become an essential part of everyday life. That’s why one of the most important skills in today’s world is the basic knowledge of how to use computers. To help the Latino community in Des Moines to be more successful in their professional and personal life, the Evelyn K. Davis Center offers Basic Digital Skills classes in Spanish at no cost.

Laura Lopez is one of the instructors for this course at the Evelyn K. Davis Center. Ms. Lopez was born to immigrants from Oaxaca, Mexico in Des Moines, Iowa. She grew up in Des Moines. A graduate of DMACC with an AA in Business Administration and Financial Administration, Lopez also attended Northern Iowa University where she studied Marketing and Spanish. Currently, she works as a Bilingial Retirement Specialist at Principal Financial Group, and on Saturdays, she works with the Latino community as an instructor for the Basic Digital Skills class in Spanish.

“I started being an Instructor for the Spanish Basic Digital Skills Class last year because I am passionate about being involved in my community. I learned about the program because I met Ahmed, the EKD Center executive director, in a Des Moines partnership Multicultural reception, “Ms. Lopez shared her reasons why she decided to become an instructor at the Evelyn K. Davis Center.

She explained that this specific class is offered 100% in Spanish. Those that sign up for it will learn important computer skills.

“Participants learn the basics of computers, how to use Microsoft word and Excel,” Ms. Lopez share some information about Spanish Basic Digital Skills Class. “There is no cost for this course, and they don’t need to have prior knowledge before taking it. Each cohort consists of 4 class sessions. Classes are on Saturday Mornings.”

By now two groups have already taken and finished this course with Ms. Lopez as an instructor. A new group will be starting soon.

“Access to basic digital skills knowledge is important because it can open up many opportunities,” Ms. Lopez shared her thoughts on the importance of having basic computer skills.”It can help you stay connected with family and friends who live in other countries. It can also help you learn new skills and gain access to the latest news and events, educational materials, and even start a business.”
