Immigration Impact in Iowa Iowa, admitted to the Union on December 28, 1846 as the 29th state, is the archetype of what has come to be known mockingly as “flyover country.” The state is widely known for two things: 1) the nation’s biggest producer of corn and pork, and 2) the site of the country’s first Presidential election primary every four years. The State of Iowa’s entire population, 3.1 million people, is even smaller than the 3.8 million population of the City of Los Angeles, and it is majority White, at 85%. The following ethnic and racial groups make up the remainder of the state population: Hispanics, 6.0%; Blacks, 3.8%; Asians, 2.6%; and Native Americans & two or more races, 2.6% (https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/ ia). Although a small percentage, the Latino population is growing rapidly, and it is expected to increase to 13% of the state’s population over the next 30 years. Polk County, where Des Moines is located, is expected to be 20% Hispanic by 2050, and Crawford County, where Denison is located, will achieve a majority Latino population, at 57.9% (Kilen, 2017). Iowa’s earliest European settlers – Germans, Norwegians, Swedes and others – began arriving in the mid-1800s, pushing their way into land that had been home to Native Americans for centuries, including the Sioux, Winnebago, Ioway, Omaha and Meskwaki tribes. The immigrants continued to come, lured by opportunities based on the availability of vast tracts of agricultural land. In more recent years, the flow of immigration has become more diverse, including Bosnian Muslims (Kilen, 2016) who began arriving in the 1990s, and later, Somalis (Basu, 2017) fleeing violence in their homelands. Both groups have faced religious and ethnic discrimination, especially in the wake of 9/11, but their communities are becoming ever more established through successful economic and cultural integration. The American Immigration Council (2017), a nonprofit immigration advocacy group, reports that about 5% of the state’s residents are immigrants, 37% of whom have been naturalized. In 2016, 76% of those eligible had applied for DACA status. In 2015, immigrants comprised 9.6% of the workforce in manufacturing; 8.6% in accommodations and food services; 8.5% in professional, scientific and technical services; 6.6% in finance and insurance; and
6.3% in construction. In the area of educational attainment, immigrants in Iowa roughly match their native-born counterparts among those with a college degree or more – 27% for immigrants and 26.8% for native-born. Immigrants with less than a Bachelor’s degree, however, fall far behind the native-born. For example, 32% of immigrants have less than a high school diploma, compared with 6.9% of native-born Iowans. Even though their numbers are relatively small, the presence of immigrants in Iowa has had significant impact on the state’s economy. The American Immigration Council (2017) also reports that: • Immigrant-led households in Iowa paid $820.3 million in federal taxes and $348.9 million in state and local taxes in 2014. • DACA recipients paid $6.8 million in state and local taxes in 2016. • Immigrant-led households had $3 billion in spending power in 2014. • Immigrant business-owners accounted
for 2.5% of all self-employed Iowa residents in 2015 and generated $54.6 million in business income. Although Trump won the 2016 election in Iowa, promising to build a wall along the United States’ southern border and to scuttle DACA, Iowans appear to be rejecting his hardline position on immigration. A Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll conducted in January 2018 indicates that 65% support a pathway to citizenship for the undocumented in the state and that 81% favor finding a way to extend citizenship to DACA recipients. The poll indicates that 93% of Democrats, 80% of Independents and 74% of Republicans support extending citizenship to DACA recipients. In terms of age, 83% of Iowans under 35, and 84% of those over 65 see extending citizenship to DACA recipients as a worthy goal. Fifty percent of Iowans do not support building the wall along the southern border proposed by President Trump (Noble, 2018). Iowans’ compassionate and pragmatic

view of immigrants in their state, as expressed in their responses to the Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll, would appear to stand in sharp contrast to their support of the Trump campaign in 2016 and the repeated reelection of Steve King to the U.S. Congress since 2003. King, a Republican who represents the Iowa 4th District, which includes Sioux City, has a long history of nativist positions and racist remarks (Coaston, 2018). However, the tension between those different points of view among Iowans may be emblematic of the conflicted positions and behaviors of voters in other parts of the country. These perceptions of immigrants, realistic or delusory, are that they change the complexion and culture of the community.

Pearl Gonzalez gets title shot in main event at Invicta FC 34: Porto vs Gonzalez on February 15th By Nicholas Cunningham An old Chinese proverb says, pearls don’t lie on the sea shore, if you want one you must dive for it. That sentiment could not be more fitting for a fighter that shares a name and a lifestyle with that saying. Invicta FC flyweight, Pearl Gonzalez (9-3) had a very busy 2018 since making her move to Invicta last March and since then has gone undefeated in the all-women’s MMA organization. For her hard work, the Chicago born fighter has been given a chance to cap off last year and start this year off with Invicta gold as on Friday, February 15th from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas she will face Vanessa Porto (20-8) for the vacant flyweight championship at Invicta FC 34: Porto vs Gonzalez. “When I was first released from the UFC, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to fight anymore,” explained Gonzalez. And they say everything happens for a reason and there is no doubt in my mind that happened for this reason now.” Looking back on her short-lived time in the UFC before making the switch to Invicta last year, Gonzalez reflects on that time and is thankful that it got her to do some self-reflection and rebuilding in order to be the best version of herself and who she knew she could be. “I think that when I was in the UFC, when you look to the next level in whatever you are doing, it requires a new version of you,” said Gonzalez.” “And I think that when I got to the UFC, I didn’t change my identity of who I was. And so therefore I didn’t do well.” It would appear from how active and successful Gonzalez was last year that we are now witnessing a fighting Phoenix that has risen out of the ashes of her former self. “To go over to Invicta, they have allowed me to blossom into the fighter I am now and to give me the freedom to be myself and show my character,” said Gonzalez. “This past year has been a year of rebuilding and rekindling my fire and passion for this sport, so the biggest blessing in disguise was being released from the UFC so that I could go to Invicta and really
find myself. Sometimes you have to get put on your butt to reinvent yourself.” This is Gonzalez’s first title shot and Porto’s third. And with a title fight comes a grocery list of nerves that would normally not be there for just another fight. “It’s another step, it’s a main event, a big fight card, it is for the title, there’s two more rounds added in there, so yes there is nerves going into this,” explained Gonzalez. “But I can say this has been the hardest training camp of my life and I’m more than prepared. My team has done an amazing getting me conditioned and having me ready for five rounds.” And one of those teammates is Bellator women’s flyweight champion, Ilima-Lei MacFarlane. “She just got out of her fight camp for her fight last December,” said Gonzalez. “So, I was already training with her and all of her camp for five rounds, so we already have a good system. I am nervous but I train even harder so there are no uncertainties.”
When watching a Pearl Gonzalez fight, it doesn’t take long to notice that her passion and love for the sport and when asked she attributes the way she carries herself to her Latin roots. “I am Latina and proud of it and I am very grateful to represent my culture and our people,” expressed Gonzalez.” It’s very dear to my heart to be an inspiration to all young women and all young kids in general, especially young girls and young women and it’s very dear to my heart to set a good example to live and to set the bar for them so they can raise it. You don’t have to be a victim of your circumstances, you can be a product because of it and that’s what I live by.” With just under two weeks until her title fight, Gonzalez already exudes the confidence of a champion. And having seemingly won the battle against her former self to get to this point in her career, having the title belt around her waist would only solidify all the ups
and downs over the last two years. And if her new found love for herself and the sport shows its face on fight night, the “Chi-Town Princess” may finally get the crown she has been working so hard for up to this point. “My last fight, I was not happy with my performance,” explained Gonzalez. “We’ve been working so hard in my gym to grow and get better and I am very excited to showcase some of my skills that I wasn’t able to show last fight. I’m 100% percent committed to my sport, my team and my craft.” Pearl Gonzalez will face Vanessa Porto for the vacant Invicta FC flyweight title at Invicta FC 34: Porto vs Gonzalez on Friday, February 15th streaming live and exclusively on UFC Fight Pass at 7pm CT. Cardi B comes to Des Moines in May By Marlu Abarca & Anastassia Zvoryguina On Friday, February 1, tickets went on sale for the most anticipated hip-hop show coming to the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines: Cardi B. The regional promoter company, Mammoth Live, has scheduled a visit for the breakout, record-breaking artist for a concert at the Wells Fargo Arena on Friday, May 3 at 7pm. Originally from Bronx borough of New York, Cardi B’s real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar and her father is from Dominican Republic, while her mother is from Trinidad. Cardi B is everyone’s favorite bad girl. Cardi B, whose fame began with her presence on Instagram, and her participation in the popular show, Love & Hip Hop New York, has grown to be one of the most recognized artists in recent history, receiving awards from American Music Awards, ASCAP, BBC Radio 1, BET, Billboard Music, Bravo Otto, Break the Internet Awards, as well as receiving nominations for Premios Lo Nuestro and Grammy Awards. But hip-hop fans are not the only ones anticipating the arrival of Cardi B. The Polk County Democrats wrote from their Twitter account that “it only makes sense to invite Cardi B for a reception of her choice while
she is here in May.” “As the center of the Iowa Caucuses, we have been honor to host[...] many powerful women leaders. “The Twitter audience received the tweet with mixed emotions, many criticizing her past as an exotic dancer, and others criticizing the party for their lack of work in support of communities of color. In recent years, the number of artists and celebrities who make their political opinions public has increased. There is support and disagreement regarding the honesty of artists like Cardi B, when she announced that she was not going to join Maroon 5, during the Super Bowl Halftime Show; one of the most popular televised concerts in the United States. A statement from Cardi B’s representatives announced, “I was not particularly interested in participating because of how you feel about Colin Kaepernick and the whole movement.” The official announcement also refers to other artists who have supported the American football player. who knelt during the national anthem in protest of police brutality. Tickets are already on sale through HyVeeTix.com, the box office of the Wells Fargo Arena (233 Center, St., Des Moines, IA) or by phone 844-55-HYVEE. Get your tickets soon as they will not last!
