Opinión: Los latinos lideran con nuestra diversidad

“No pareces latina”.

No se cuántas veces he escuchado esa reacción cuando alguien se entera de mi descendencia de Nuevo México. Obviamente, no encajo en su estereotipo.

Fue irónico escuchar esta frase recientemente en el Salón de la Fama Latino de Iowa de la Comisión de Asuntos Latinos de Iowa, ya que mientras observaba a la gran multitud, la rica diversidad de la población latina era evidente. El grupo fue reunido para reconocer a los líderes latinos de Iowa, lo cual es particularmente importante desde un punto de vista comercial y cultural dado el rápido crecimiento de la población hispana en nuestro estado.

La Comisión de Asuntos Latinos de Iowa fue establecida en 1974 y ha evolucionado a través de las décadas para representar y abogar por la comunidad latina. Su informe de 2019 indica que había 194,432 latinos en Iowa el año anterior, un aumento de 135% con respecto al año 2000. Según un estudio de Woods & Pool Economics Inc. de 2019, los latinos constituirán el 12.2% de la población total del estado para el año 2050.

Dado que los latinos son uno de los grupos étnicos de más rápido crecimiento en los Estados Unidos y en Iowa, es fundamental que los líderes se sensibilicen sobre la diversidad dentro de esta comunidad y rompan con los estereotipos que conducen al prejuicio o a la parcialidad.

Uno de los estereotipos es que todos los latinos son inmigrantes a los Estados Unidos y que los inmigrantes indocumentados vienen de México. Si bien es cierto que muchos inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos vienen del sur de la frontera, la inmigración latina viene de todas partes del mundo. Muchos latinos han estado aquí por generaciones, como por ejemplo mi familia que se estableció en Nuevo México hace más de 400 años.

Algunos creen que todos los latinos o hispanos hablan español, tienen las mismas costumbres, comen la misma comida y comparten la misma cultura. Muchos latinos en Estados Unidos hablan español, pero no todos. Según la Oficina del Censo de los Estados Unidos, sólo el 75.1% de los latinos hablan español en casa. Es posible que otros no hablen español

en absoluto o que hablen idiomas diferentes.

Las costumbres y los alimentos dependen en gran medida de la procedencia de las personas.

Por ejemplo, cubanos, mexicanos y argentinos tienen culturas y gastronomías distintas. Y algunos latinos simplemente han adoptado la cultura dominante en Estados Unidos.

Otro estereotipo es que todos los latinos tienen ojos, cabello y piel oscuros. De hecho, los latinos son muy diferentes: blancos, negros y morenos. Las estadísticas de la Oficina del Censo de los Estados Unidos muestran que los hispanos tienen cada vez más diversidad en la forma en que se identifican racialmente.

En el Salón de la Fama Latino de Iowa, hubo personas que representaron las muchas maneras de ser latino -- varias maneras de serlo, de hablar español y de no hablar español, gente de muchos países o diferentes orígenes, inmigrantes y aquellos cuyas familias han estado aquí por generaciones. Y como vimos en ese

evento, hay una gran cantidad de líderes latinos diversos y talentosos aquí en Iowa, que contribuyen con los negocios, el gobierno, la educación y la cultura, haciendo de nuestro estado un mejor lugar para vivir y trabajar.

Así que volviendo al comentario de que no “parezco” latina. Puede que no todos encajemos en los estereotipos, pero somos sus vecinos, colegas, líderes empresariales y comunitarios. Y nuestra población está creciendo. ¿A qué nos parecemos? parecemos de Iowa.

“Una cita con Ying @8am. Iniciando un Negocio”: Un nuevo libro para quienes deseen iniciar un negocio nuevo Por Tar Macias y Anastassia Zvoryguina Ying Sa es muy conocida en la comunidad empresarial de Des Moines, IA. Es la fundadora de Community CPA y cofundadora y presidenta de Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit (IES). Ya puede agregar escritora a su extensa lista de logros. Explicó que el primero de los cuatro libros de la serie se llama “Cita con Ying a las 8 de la mañana” porque se refiere al inicio de un nuevo negocio. El segundo libro se llamará “Cita con Ying @ 10am” y da consejos sobre cómo desarrollar el negocio. El tercer libro se llama “cita con Ying @ 2pm” y en él se le enseña a los dueños de negocios a hacer crecer su empresa. El cuarto y último libro de la serie se llama “Cita con Ying @ 6pm” y ofrecerá buenos consejos a los empresarios que desean jubilarse.

“Cuando estaba empezando a escribir el libro, pensé que sería sólo uno. Así que, cuando empecé a reunirlo, me di cuenta de que no cabía en un solo libro. Por eso me puse a dividirlos por tiempo. 8 AM, 10 AM, 2 PM, y las 6 PM. De esta manera puedo hacerme una idea de ellos porque no quieres que el libro sea demasiado grueso ya que será

difícil para la gente digerirlo”, dijo Ying Sa, al explicar cómo un libro se convirtió en una serie de cuatro.

También agregó que este libro cuenta las historias de algunos de sus clientes, por supuesto, los nombres han sido cambiados para proteger la confidencialidad de estos, pero sin embargo son historias basadas en personas y hechos reales. Los dueños de negocios encontrarán una gran cantidad de información útil en estos libros. Ying Sa sencillamente quiere que la gente conozca las herramientas que pueden ayudar a sus negocios, sin importar en qué etapa se encuentren.

“Probablemente se darán cuenta de cuánto no sabían y de lo fácil que es hacerlo. Por lo tanto, es un inglés sencillo, pero ofrece un conocimiento muy profundo sobre contabilidad e impuestos”, afirmó la Sra. Sa. ¡LoPiez! La nueva pizzería de QC festeja su gran éxito y se prepara para la temporada navideña Por Nicholas Cunningham Hace cinco meses, cuando los hermanos López, Andrew y Peter, abrieron LoPiez pizza, una pizzería al estilo neoyorquino en el centro de Davenport, esperaban que fuera un éxito. La gran inundación en Davenport de 2019 en abril, retrasó la inauguración unos meses, pero desde que abrieron sus puertas hace cinco meses, han

estado tambaleándose, y desde entonces se están preparando para la temporada de días festivos con algunas divertidas sorpresas para sus clientes. “Sabíamos que iba a estar muy ajetreado, pero no estábamos seguros de qué tan ocupados íbamos a estar o cuánto tiempo iba a tardar la gente en venir”, explicó el propietario, Andrew López.

eso pasó, la gente empezó a entrar, y para cuando abrimos, que eran como las 4 o 5, todo el lugar estaba lleno y había una fila que salía por la puerta trasera”.

Como bien saben la mayoría de los dueños nuevos, siempre hay un gran interés inicial en un nuevo lugar y luego puede haber una baja en lo que se estabiliza el negocio. LoPiez sigue esperando que eso suceda. “Mucha gente dice que hay una fase de luna de miel en la que la gente viene y lo prueba durante un par de semanas y luego se vuelve más lento, pero fueron como dos o tres meses y todavía sigue en el mismo ritmo”, dijo López. “Definitivamente superó nuestras expectativas”.

Cualquiera que ha visitado LoPiez sabe que en cualquier momento se puede ver a todo su personal, incluyendo a Andrew y a su hermano Peter, trabajando en múltiples funciones para asegurarse de que el producto y su experiencia sean de la mejor calidad. Y López atribuye esa ética de trabajo, forma de vida e incluso el nombre del negocio y los artículos del menú a su familia y a su herencia mexicana. “Mi padre es una de las personas más trabajadoras que conozco, y mi abuelo también es una de las personas más trabajadoras que conozco.

Eso tiene mucho que ver”, dijo López. “ Lo llamábamos LoPiez porque queríamos dedicárselo a mi padre y a mi abuelo sin llamarle la pizza López. El hecho de tener el nombre en el título es muy importante para mí, ya que soy de familia mexicana.

Me enorgullezco de nuestro apellido y de nuestra familia porque en la comunidad mexicana todos nos apoyamos unos a otros”.

LoPiez aprendió de primera mano lo mucho que la comunidad de los Quad Cities se apoya mutuamente cuando se produjo la inundación y casi cierran sus negocios para siempre. Y por todo lo que la comunidad les ayudó y apoyó, LoPiez quiere asegurarse de devolverles tanto como sea posible. “Todo el mundo tiene que ayudar”, dijo López. “Creo que hoy en día tenemos un gran número de jóvenes emprendedores y un montón de mileniales que están iniciando nuevos negocios. Considero que eso está ocurriendo más bien al ver que las empresas empiezan a trabajar entre sí, porque es más fácil cuando la comunidad colabora entre sí. Y yo quiero que eso se extienda

más allá de la comunidad mexicana y que llegue a la comunidad”.

En cuanto a la pizza en sí, los hermanos se han esforzado mucho para vincular su origen mexicano en el menú sin caer en el cliché. “La pizza Jardín de Chavo lleva el nombre de mi abuelo”, dijo López. “Su apodo es Chavo y siempre está cuidando su jardín, incluso hasta el día de hoy tiene como noventa y dos años y sigue ahí fuera en verano. “Los Nudos de agave y la orilla de la pizza se relacionan con las margaritas que también ofrecemos. No son solamente ideas mexicanas, son cosas que realmente funcionan. No es como si fueran pizzas de burrito, pero nos gusta poner un poco de estilo. Creo que lo más importante son las margaritas que le dan un toque mexicano sin exagerar”.

A pocos días del Día de Acción de Gracias, las festividades comienzan la temporada navideña y LoPiez está listo para todo. “Todos los días festivos importantes vamos a cerrar ya que somos un negocio de carácter familiar y queremos que todos estos chicos (el personal) tengan tiempo libre y no trabajen demasiado durante los días festivos”, dijo López. “Así que, cerraremos todos los días festivos importantes” Y hablando de LoPiez 2020, Andrew dice que desea mantenerlo todo sencillo durante el primer año, disfrutar del tiempo allí y ofrecer consejos a los futuros propietarios de negocios de la zona. “Yo les diría que crean en ustedes mismos y cuando las cosas se ponen difíciles y creen que no pueden superar un obstáculo, hagan todo lo posible por superarlo porque se pone difícil y entonces se vuelve fácil y después se vuelve difícil”. Nunca va a ser un terreno de juego parejo”, dijo López. “Sólo mantén la cabeza baja y sigue trabajando duro. Si tu actividad es algo en lo que realmente crees, entonces mantente con ella de manera que casi tienes que ser obsesionado con esa idea. Porque si no estás pensando en ello todo el tiempo, entonces habrá algo que te vas a perder”.

LoPiez! QC’s newest pizza joint celebrate their success and prepares for the holiday season

By Nicholas Cunningham Five months ago, when Lopez brothers Andrew and Peter opened LoPiez pizza, a New York style pizza spot in downtown Davenport, they hoped it would be a success. The Great Davenport Flood of 2019 that came in April, pushed back the opening a few months but since they opened their doors five months ago, they have been reeling in the dough, literally, since then and are preparing for the holiday season with a few fun surprises for their customers.

“We knew it was going to be busy, but we weren’t sure how busy it was going to be or how long people were going to be coming in,” explained owner Andrew Lopez. “We had our soft opening of friends and family two hours before and right when that happened people started trickling in, and by the time we opened which was like four or five, this whole place was packed and there was a line going out the back door.”

As most new owners know, there is always an initial interest in a new spot and then there may be a lull in business. LoPiez is still waiting for that to happen. “A lot of people say there is a honeymoon phase where people come and try it for a couple weeks and then it slows down, but it was like two to three months and it’s still going,” said Lopez. “It definitely exceeded our expectations for sure.”

Anybody that has stopped in to LoPiez knows that at any time you can pretty much see all the staff there, including Andrew and his brother Peter, working multiple positions to make sure the product and your experience is top notch. And Lopez credits that work ethic, way of life and even the business name and menu items to his family and Mexican heritage. “My dad is one of the hardest working people I know, and my grandpa is also one of the hardest working people I know as well. So that has a big deal to do with it,” said Lopez.

“We wanted to call it LoPiez because we wanted to dedicate it to my father

and my grandfather without making it Lopez pizza. The fact that we have the name in the title means a lot to me like being from a Mexican family. I really take pride in our last name and family because usually in the Mexican community everyone backs each other up.”

LoPiez learned firsthand about just how much the Quad City community backs each other up when the flood hit and almost shut down their business for good. And because of how much the community helped and supported them, LoPiez want to make sure they give back as much as they can. “Everyone just needs to be helping,” said Lopez. “I think nowadays we have a lot of young entrepreneurs and a lot of millennials that are starting new businesses. I think that’s starting to happen more just seeing businesses starting to work with each other, because it’s easier when the community works with each other. And I want to keep that going outside the Mexican community and push it forward into the community.”

As for the pizza itself, the brothers have also worked hard to tie in their Mexican background into the menu without being cliché. “Chavo’s Garden is named after my Grandpa,” said Lopez. “His nickname is Chavo and he’s always growing a garden even to this day he’s like ninety-two years old and he’s still out there in the summer. “The agave knots and the crust correlate with the margaritas we also provide. It’s not just Mexican ideas, its things that actually work. It’s not like gimmicky like burrito pizzas, we still like to put a little flair. I think the biggest thing is the margaritas that bring the Mexican flair in without overdoing it.”

During the holiday season LoPiez is ready for it all. “All the major holidays we are going to close just because we are a family-oriented establishment and we want all these guys (staff) to have some time and don’t want to overwork them during the holidays,” said Lopez. “So, we’ll be closed all major

holidays” And talking LoPiez 2020, Andrew says he just wants to keep it simple in the first year, enjoy the time there and offers advice to future business owners in the area. “I would say just believe in yourself and when it gets hard and when you think you can’t overcome a hurdle, just try so hard to jump over it because it gets hard then it gets easy then it gets hard. It’s never going to be a level playing field,” said Lopez. “Just keep your head down and keep work-

ing hard. If your business is something you truly believe in, then stick with it where you almost have to be obsessive with it. Because it you aren’t thinking about it all the time, then there is something you are going to be missing.”

By Tar Macias & Anastassia Zvoryguina Ying Sa is very well-known in the business community in Des Moines, IA. She is, after all, the founder of Community CPA and co-founder and chair of the Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit (IES). Now she can add author

to her extensive list of accomplishments. Ying Sa’s first book is called “Appointment with Ying @ 8am. Starting up a Business,” from the four-book series, and is now available now for sale in Amazon.

Throughout her long career Ying Sa has met a lot of clients and answered a lot of similar questions from different

clients, so she decided to put the answers to those frequently asked questions in a book.

“Because you meet with so many people and a lot of times you find that their questions and their concerns are the same and to disseminate this knowledge faster than just me meeting with a person I wrote a book that literally answers those questions,” Ms. Sa explained her reason why she decided to write the book..” It’s just another way to disseminate our knowledge to the public so what I did I, I actually wrote it in English, but I am already scheduling to translate it to Spanish and to Chinese.”

She explained that the first book of the four-book series called “Appointment with Ying @ 8am” because it talks about starting a new business.

The second book will be called “Appointment with Ying @ 10am” and it gives pointers to how to develop the business. The third book is called “appointment with Ying @ 2pm” and this third book of the series teaches business owners to expand their existing business. The fourth and last book of the series is called “Appointment with Ying @ 6pm” and it will give sound advice to business owners who are looking to retire.

“When I was writing the book initially, I thought it was just one book.

So, when I started putting it together, I realized that it can’t fit in one book. So I started breaking them down by time.

8 AM, 10 AM, 2 PM, and the 6 PM. So that’s how I can think of them because you don’t want the book to be way too thick because it will be hard for people to digest it,” Ying Sa explained how one book became a series of four.

She also added that this book narrates the stories of some of her clients, of course, the names are changed to protect the confidentiality of her clients, but nonetheless they are stories based on real people and facts. Business owners will find a wealth of helpful information in these books. Ying Sa simply wants people to be knowledgeable about things that can help their businesses no matter what stage they find

themselves in.

“They probably will realize how much they did not know and realize how easy that can be done. It is just a knowledge equalizer,” Ying Sa described what can readers expect from her books. “It is knowledge, we put out the knowledge that we have gained in the last 25 years in our practice and there is nothing I kept a secret. It is just all out there. So, someone will say, Ying you are giving out all your trade secrets and I will say, there is no trade secret because it is the community of knowledge that we give back to the community.”

Ying expects her book to be a success simply because it is simple and it is easy to understand for everyone, even those whose English is a second language. But because it is written in simple terms, it does not mean that information presented is simple as well.

“My English is a second language, so it [the book] has a lot of Chinglish if you call it. So, it is simple English, but it gives a very deep knowledge of accounting and taxes,” Ms. Sa stated.

Not only does this book offer a lot of important information, but also it supports the Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit.

“Buy the book for two things. Buy the book for the knowledge you long to gain and also buy the book for the support of our own communities and IES. All the money we collect from the book, it will be going to IES, to support the Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit.”

Defend DACA Rally in Des Moines

El 12 de noviembre de 2019, la comunidad de Des Moines se unió en solidaridad con los beneficiarios de DACA en Iowa cuando la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos comenzó a escuchar argumentos orales que luego determinarán el futuro del programa.

On November 12, 2019 the community of Des Moines joined in solidarity with the DACA recipients in Iowa as the Supreme Court of the United States began hearing oral arguments that will later determine the future of the program.

The ice and cold did not prevent supporters to gather in support of the DACA recipients.

Congratulations to our dear friend Blanca Plascencia that today she was recognized as one of the 40 Women to Watch in the Hospitality Industry by the Iowa Restaurant Association.

Blanca is the co-owner of El Fogón Mexican Restaurant in West Des Moines, IA. Like many restaurant owners, El Fogon’s Blanca Plascencia wears many hats. A business owner, wife and mother, she is just as likely to greet customers at the door as being in the kitchen.

A native of Mexico, Blanca has created a restaurant reminiscent of her childhood where life centered around the kitchen, and her mother, aunts and grandma worked together expressing love through food.

Opinion: Latinos lead with our diversity

I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard that reaction when someone finds out my New Mexican heritage. Clearly, I do not fit their stereotype.

It was ironic to hear this same line recently at the Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs’ Iowa Latino Hall of Fame, because as I scanned the sizable crowd, the rich diversity of the Latino population was evident. The group was assembled to honor Iowa Latino leaders, which is particularly important from a business and cultural standpoint given the rapid growth of the Hispanic population in our state.

The Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs was established in 1974 and has evolved over the decades to represent and advocate for the Latino community. Their 2019 report indicates there were 194,432 Latinos in Iowa in the prior year, a 135% change from 2000. According to a 2019 study by Woods & Pool Economics Inc., Latinos will constitute 12.2% of the state’s total population by 2050.

Since Latinos are one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States and in Iowa, it is critical for leaders to develop an awareness of the diversity within this community and to break down stereotypes that lead to bias or prejudice.

One stereotype is that all Latinos are immigrants to the U.S. and that undocumented immigrants come from Mexico.

While it’s true that many immigrants in the United States come from south of the border, Latino immigration comes from all over the world. Many Latinos have been here for generations, such as my own fam-

ily who settled in New Mexico over 400 years ago.

Some believe that all Latinos or Hispanics speak Spanish, have the same customs, eat the same food, and share the same culture.

Many U.S. Latinos speak Spanish, but not all. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 75.1% of Latinos speak Spanish at home. Others may not speak Spanish at all or speak different languages. Customs and food are largely dependent on where someone is from. For example, Cubans, Mexicans and Argentines have distinct cultures and cuisines. And some Latinos have simply adopted mainstream American culture.

Another stereotype is that all Latinos have dark eyes, hair and skin. In fact, Latinos are very diverse: white, black and brown.

U.S. Census Bureau statistics show that Hispanics are increasingly diverse in how they racially identify.

At the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame, there were individuals who represented the many ways of being Latino -- various appear-

ances, Spanish speaking and non-Spanish speaking, people from many countries or backgrounds, immigrants and those whose families have been here for generations.

And as we witnessed at that event, there are a multitude of diverse and talented Latino leaders here in Iowa, contributing to business, government, education and culture -- making our state a better place to live and work.

So back to the comment that I don’t “look” Latina. We may not all fit the stereotypes, but we are your neighbors, colleagues, business and community leaders.

And our population is growing. What do we look like? We look like Iowans.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez visited with Latino community leaders in Iowa The NY freshman U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took some time last November 9 to meet with some of the politically active Latino leaders in Des Moines.

She visited Iowa for a 3-day swing visit of Council Bluffs, Des Moines and Iowa City breaking records of attendance for this presidential election cycle.

There where people representing LULAC,

Later that day she participated in the Climate Crisis Summit at Drake University.
