Bernie Sanders Statement on Deportations RAPID CITY, S.D. – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Thursday issued the following statement after Reuters reported that U.S. immigration officials plan a new round of deportation raids: “I oppose the painful and inhumane business of locking up and deporting families who have fled horrendous violence in Central America and other countries. Sending these people back into harm’s way is wrong. “I recently met a young Salvadoran woman who

came to the United States on her own at the age of 15 to flee gangs trying to recruit her. I’ve also spoken with many children who have told me with tears streaming down their faces that they live in daily fear that their parents will be taken away. “I urge President Obama to use his executive authority to protect families by extending Temporary Protective Status for those who fled from Central America.”

Unprecedented ‘Opportunity Scholarship’ for Undocumented Students in Iowa to Attend College Scholarship will give hundreds of DREAMers who live in ‘locked out’ states, including Iowa, the chance to earn a college degree IOWA, MAY 10, 2016 – TheDream.US, the nation’s largest scholarship program for DREAMers – immigrant youth who came to the country without documentation – in partnership with the states of Connecticut and Delaware, is announcing a new groundbreaking scholarship program for DREAMers who are “locked out” of access to a college education in their home states – including the state of Iowa. TheDream.US Opportunity Scholarship will provide a pathway to higher education for 500 highly-motivated immigrant students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or Temporary Protective Status (TPS) who live in states like Iowa where they are required to pay out-of-state tuition or prohibited from enrolling in the state’s colleges and universities all together. Eastern Connecticut State University and Delaware State University are leading the way in this unprecedented program to give students from Iowa and other locked-out states the opportunity of an affordable college education. Both institutions have the capacity to admit DREAMer Scholars without depriving any Connecticut or Delaware state students of the opportunity to attend these colleges. TheDream.US Opportunity Scholarship – which is privately funded – will pay up

to $80,000 to help fund the costs of tuition, fees, oncampus housing and meals for these DREAMers to earn a bachelor’s degree. “Education is an American value; we should help every student who has worked hard,” said Donald E. Graham, co-founder of TheDream.US. “TheDream. US Opportunity Scholarship will help immigrant students fulfill their dreams of obtaining a college education so they can better the lives of their families, communities, and our nation. We are proud to partner with Eastern Connecticut State University and Delaware State University, with the incredible leadership of Governor Malloy and Governor Markell, to give deserving students the opportunity for an affordable college education.” In addition to funding over 500 out-of-state DREAMers, TheDream.US will provide 100 scholarships of up to $7,250 each to in-state DREAMers attending Eastern Connecticut State University or Delaware State University. TheDream.US founders are also working with local philanthropists to raise additional funds for scholarships for Connecticut and Delaware state students who also struggle to pay for a college education. “We’re pleased to take part in this program and do what we can to give hardworking students the chance to succeed,” said Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy. “Our state stands to benefit from welcoming them – along with their talents and potential – to our communities and to our schools.” “This partnership will add to Delaware State’s incredible legacy of creating new opportunities for students to get a great education and pursue their dreams,” said Delaware Governor Jack Markell. “I’m grateful to Don Graham, President Williams, and their teams for their hard work to make this program possible for the deserving scholarship recipients. These students will make Delaware State a stronger institution for everyone and I am thrilled that we are welcoming these talented young people to Delaware.” The Opportunity Scholarship is available to DREAMers in Iowa and 15 other targeted locked-out states, including Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The deadline for applications is June 9, and scholarship recipients will be announced at the end of June. Silvis native found it very gratifying to work on Bernie Sanders Presidential campaign By Alejandra Salazar

With the presidential primaries in full swing, and Donald Trump being the presumptive GOP nominee, all eyes are on the candidates for the democratic nomination. While Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanderscould not be more different, they all have one thing in common- they aren’t doing it alone. Behind the scenes are thousands of assistants, advisors, lawyers and other staff who ensure that their candidate puts her or his best face forward at all times. One of those people is Silvis native Juan Alfredo Rodriguez Martinez, who was kind enough to be interviewed by Hola America during a recent trip home to visit family. Rodriguez was Nevada Outreach Director for the Bernie Sanders campaign. When asked to describe a “typical” day in the life of a senior state presidential campaign staffer, one could practically hear laughter coming through the email exchange when he replies that there is no such thing, save for pressure and exhilaration. “I spent a lot of time on the phone - putting out fires, interviews, staff updates, persuasion calls, meeting requests, and conference calls with National Political Outreach team as well as with the National Latino Outreach team. It was endless. If I was not on the phone I was in a meeting with my team or the State Director or was at an off site meeting” he says. He also helped draft press releases, shoot commercials, and even got to interact with celebrities who endorse the Senator. Among them were members of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and actors Mark Ruffalo and Gaby Hoffman. Rodriguez states that his proudest moment on the Sanders campaign was helping the Senator secure the endorsement of one of Nevada’s most influential labor unions.

“Timing is everything in campaigns” he recalls, “the Senator had a full schedule and my last minute union event cut into it further. We drove from a Veteran’s event and got there a little late. He met with Union executives first then he addressed the 100 or so invitees in the typical Bernie Sanders way we are familiar with. At the end of his talk he got a standing ovation. I was standing in the wings with the other staff. As he walked off the stage towards us he shifted his walk towards me and extended his hand to me and said “thank you for this.” It was surreal and it caught me off guard. Looking back, it was very gratifying and it speaks volumes as to the character of Bernie Sanders”. He also says for the last week of the Nevada campaign, his team was relocated to an office inside Harrah’s Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. “It was odd reporting to work on a political campaign in a casino!” he says. In addition to having held various political offices, Rodriguez has worked on many local, state, and national campaigns, and proudly states that his upbringing in Silvis prepared him very well for his future career. The first seeds were planted by his father, the late Ervey Rodriguez. “He was a proud member UAW Local 865 in East Moline and he shared with us why collective bargaining is needed and why it is very important to working families” he said. From there, Rodriguez says his interest in politics grew organically from being surrounded by the many Latinos fighting for their rights in the SilvisEast Moline area. He was a volunteer with the late Bob Moreno’s campaign for Rock Island County Clerk in the mid-eighties, and it was with Moreno’s encouragement that he successfully ran for Democratic Precinct Committeeman in Hampton Township. Rodriguez-Martinez also cites UAW

organizer Eva Savalas (“a fighter for women and minorities who showed me to never back down from what’s important”) and former Silvis Mayor and Civil Rights leader Joe Terronez as major influences. When asked what advice he had for young Latinos hoping to start a career in politics, Rodriguez says hard work is paramount. “The most important piece of advice would be prepared to work hard and pay your dues. Very hard. The days start early and end late. You can work on average 8-16 hours a day and seven days a week if you work full time on a major U.S. Senate or Presidential campaign” he says, adding that going to college and networking are also extremely important. Now that the Nevada campaign is over, Rodriguez says that he expects to stay very busy with his company, Rodriguez Hispanic Concepts, LLC

(RHC). It is a full service Hispanic Advertising & Public Affairs company that Rodriguez says is branching out to include Latino advocacy, field campaign consulting work, and retail as well as government clients. He encourages anyone in need of bilingual media work to get in touch with his company at rhisconcepts@gmail.com.

Richard Burr (R-NC), Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), Sen. Pat Toomey (RPA), Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO), Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) , Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS), Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), Rep. Joe Heck (R-NV), Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Rep. David Valadao (R-CA), Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA), y Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO).

As Donald Trump Visits Capitol Hill, Groups Deliver Taco Bowls to Members of Congress Who Stand With Trump Advocates Send Clear Message to GOP: Latino and Immigrant Voters Will Remember #TrumpsParty in November Washington, DC—On May 12, Donald Trump met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill. On the very same day, the Senate carry out is serving taco salad bowls for lunch—a fitting reminder of the recent “hispandering” that Trump, the most anti-immigrant and xenophobic presidential candidate in modern U.S. history, has engaged in. As Republican politicians increasingly line up in support of Trump as their Party’s presumptive nominee, immigration advocates are delivering taco bowls to the offices of key Senators and House Members planning to stand alongside Trump in November. Advocates delivered taco bowls bearing the message: “Latino and immigrant voters will never forget who stood with Donald Trump. #TrumpsParty,” reminding those Members of Congress that Latino and immigrant voters don’t take Donald Trump’s racism and extremism lightly, and won’t forget those who went along with his candidacy in November. The groups delivering the taco bowls today were among those involved in delivering cantaloupes to 224 House members who voted with Steve King to defund DACA in 2013 and Thanksgiving dinner to GOP House leadership in 2013. Actions like the one today are a welcome reminder to Republican politicians that the same immigrants they are pledging to deport, are often the ones putting food on their table. Said Lynn Tramonte, Deputy Director of America’s Voice and director of Ohio’s Voice “Senator Rob Portman has made it clear that he’s with Trump, so he should enjoy this taco bowl we’re dropping off today. While he’s eating it, I hope Senator Portman thinks about the men and women who harvested the tomatoes and lettuce, prepared the meat and fried the shell,

and put it all together for him. Many of them are immigrants. If Trump is elected and Portman is re-elected, these immigrants could be deported. That’s the stark choice we face in this election. Latino, APIA, and immigrant voters are not going to sit by while the Party of Trump denigrates them, diminishes their contributions, and deports their loved ones.” “From day one Trump has been mischaracterizing and insulting our community, and sadly the Republican Party has followed him down the same anti-immigrant rabbit hole,” said Cristobal Alex, President of Latino Victory Fund. “With Trump at the head and on the ballot, the Republican Party will suffer more losses than expected. These taco bowls should serve as a reminder to Senators who support Trump, that the Trump effect will be felt in down ballot races. Latino and immigrant voters will hold Trump’s Party accountable.” ‎”Does the likely Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump fail to

recognize the people who feed him? It’s the work of farm workers who feed Trump and the nation,” said a United Farm Workers vice president, Giev Kashkooli. “We feed you Trump! But we won’t vote for Trump or any Republican who stands with Trump and disrespects us and the work we do feeding America.” Taco bowls were delivered to the offices of the following members: Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), Sen. Pat Toomey (RPA), Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO), Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) , Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS), Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), Rep. Joe Heck (R-NV), Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Rep. David Valadao (RCA), Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA), and Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO).

Republican Tony McCombie has challenged state Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, to a spending cap for their Nov. 8 campaign, expected to be one of the state’s most expensive. Rep. Smiddy said he’s open to the idea but is hesitant because outside groups could come into the race and spend large sums against him. Ms. McCombie said she would ask such groups to stay out, although she would have no authority to tell them to do so. Both candidates have called the amount of money being spent on state legislative races “ridiculous.” But neither wants to unilaterally stop fundraising and put himself or herself at a disadvantage. Rep. Smiddy’s District 71 seat is a top target for Republicans. Rep. Smiddy currently has about $440,000 in campaign funds, according to the most recent report filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections. Ms. McCombie, who is the mayor of Savanna, had just $13,000. However, big money is expected to start

flowing to her; she already has received donations from Chicago hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin and Uline CEO Richard Uihlein. Ms. McCombie suggested a spending cap of $500,000 each and said she would take no money from Gov. Rauner or his allies if Rep. Smiddy agreed to take no more big donations from the unions, his heaviest backers. “You know I could do a lot with a million dollars in Savanna or Fulton or Cordova,” Ms. McCombie said. “That’s serious road money. Instead we’re throwing it to the wind.” Rep. Smiddy said people are “sick and tired” of election talk and he wants to focus on getting a budget agreement. The state is now 11 months without a budget as lawmakers try to agree on a spending plan for the next budget year by May 31. He said he was not opposed to meeting Ms. McCombie after that date to discuss a spending limit. “My only hesitation is the dark money that could come in,” he said.
