3 Years In, It’s Increasingly Clear That DACA Benefits All of Us

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), President Obama’s deportation deferral program for DREAMers–undocumented young people brought to the United States as children–is celebrating its third birthday today. Three years in, we know that DACA is benefiting the individuals who receive it, and a growing pool of evidence suggests what many have anticipated since the program’s inception–that DACA benefits the rest of us, too.

Under DACA, immigrants who came to the United States before turning 16, pass a background check, and meet certain other requirements (including an education requirement), can come forward and apply for temporary but renewable protection from deportation as well as work authorization. According to the latest statistics from United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the government agency housed within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that is administering DACA, nearly 750,000 immigrants have applied

for DACA and over 660,000 have received it. Before describing what these young people have been doing with their new quasi-legal status, it bears mentioning that DACA itself incentivizes at least one activity that has tremendous social utility–namely, going back to school.

DACA is available to individuals who have graduated from school or are “currently in school.” USCIS wisely interpreted this language broadly to include GED programs as well job training and ESL courses, among others. Thus, those who may have “stopped out” of school but meet DACA’s other requirements can enroll in certain education programs and make themselves eligible for DACA. According to a report issued last year based on a survey of DACA recipients and undocumented youth, DACA beneficiaries experience a pronounced increase in economic opportunities. Shortly after receiving DACA, some 59 percent of respondents reported obtaining a new job, 57 percent indicated they had received their driver’s license, and 49 percent reported opening their first bank account. More recently, UCLA’s Institute for Research on Labor and Employment

published a survey reflecting similar outcomes: 65 percent of respondents reported improved household economic conditions and 41 percent got a job that provided health or other benefits.

These developments bode well for the country. Increased earnings and higher employment rates coupled with higher rates of tax compliance associated with moving from being undocumented to documented, means more money going to state and federal coffers. That’s especially true in the case of DACA recipients who, despite paying into “the system,” are entitled to very few state or federal benefits. Higher rates of health insurance mean less uncompensated care, which benefits all of us because uncompensated care is paid for largely through public funds. Likewise, the presence of more licensed drivers means more individuals will know the rules of the road and will purchase auto insurance, which, again, benefits all of us.

Perhaps DACA’s most important contribution to

American life is that it tells a community of talented young people who have been educated here that they belong; that they should invest in their futures in this country; and that the United States no longer wishes to see their talent go to waste. In a report released today by National Council for La Raza that collects stories of DACA recipients, one of the individuals featured, Katherine Perez, puts it plainly: “I have a job and I am in the process of getting my driver’s license. I can now save money to pay for next semester and help out at home with the expenses. I feel more empowered and in charge of my life.”

She, like so many of the extraordinary individuals featured in the report, want to see DACA mature into something permanent and they want a similar solution for their parents, whom they often refer to as the original dreamers.

Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA por sus siglas en ingles), programa de aplazamiento de deportación de Presidente Obama para DREAMers – jóvenes indocumentados que llegaron a los Estados Unidos cuando eran niños - está celebrando su tercer aniversario. Han pasado tres años, sabemos que DACA es beneficial para los que son parte del programa, y hay evidencia creciente que demuestra lo que muchos de nosotros habíamos anticipado – que DACA nos beneficia a todos nosotros también.

Bajo el DACA, los inmigrantes que llegaron a los Estados Unidos antes de cumplir 16 años, sin antecedentes criminales y que cumplen los otros requisitos necesarios (incluyendo requisito de educación), pueden salir de las sombras y aplicar por protección y permiso de trabajo temporario que los protege de la deportación.

Según estadísticas recientes por parte de Servicios de Inmigración y Ciudadanía de los Estados Unidos (USCIS por sus siglas en ingles), la agencia de gobierno que se ubica en el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS por sus siglas en ingles) y que administra DACA, casi 750,000 inmigrantes aplicaron para DACA y más de 660,000 recibieron aprobación. Antes de describir que estaban haciendo esos jóvenes en su estatus casi legal, es importante mencionar que DACA por lo menos incita a una actividad de utilidad social tremenda o sea regresar a la escuela. DACA está disponible a los individuales quienes se han graduado de la preparatoria o están actualmente asistiendo escuela. Inteligentemente USCIS interpretó este lenguaje a incluir programas de GED y entrenamiento en el trabajo y cursos de ESL, entre otros. Por eso, aquellos quienes dejaron de ir a la escuela pero cumplen los otros requisitos necesarios de DACA pueden inscribirse a los programas educativos y así poder aplicar para DACA. Según el reporte hecho el año pasado basado en la encuesta de personas que reciben DACA y jóvenes indocumentados, los beneficiarios están disfrutando del aumento de las oportunidades económicas. Poco después de recibir DACA alrededor de 59% de los encuestados obtuvieron trabajos nuevos, 57% indicaron que ellos recibieron licencia de conducir, y 49 % reportaron que abrieron su primera cuenta de banco. Recientemente, el Instituto de Investigaciones de Labor y Empleo de UCLA publicó una encuesta que refleja resultados similares: 65% de los encuestados reportaron mejoramiento de condiciones económicas en sus viviendas y 41% encontraron un trabajo que les permitió obtener seguro de salud y otros beneficios.

Estos desarrollos son buenos para el país. Incremento de salarios y tazas de empleo más altas junto con más impuestos pagados asociados con el cambio de indocumentados a documentados, todo esto significa que el gobierno federal y estatal recibe más dinero. En especial es cierto en lo que se trata de los jóvenes que reciben DACA quien, a pesar de pagar al “sistema,” no tienen derecho de muchos beneficios estatales y federales. Tasas altas de gente con seguros de salud significa menos cuidado de salud sin pago, que beneficia a todos nosotros ya que el cuidado de salud sin pago es pagado por medio de fondos públicos. Además, la presencia de conductores con licencia significa que ellos conocen las reglas de manejo y van a comprar seguro de auto, que en su turno, nos beneficia a todos nosotros.

Pero la contribución más importante de DACA a la vida estadounidense es que le indica a la comunidad de jóvenes talentosos que se educaron aquí que ellos pertenecen; y ellos deben de invertir en sus futuros en este país y que los Estados Unidos ya no quiere ver el talento desperdiciado. En un reporte hecho público por Consejo Nacional de La Raza, que colecta historias de los participantes de DACA, esta la historia de Katherine Pérez y ella dice en palabras simples: “Tengo trabajo y estoy en el proceso de recibir mi licencia de conducir.

Ahora puedo ahorrar dinero para el siguiente semestre de escuela y ayudar en mi casa con los gastos. Me siento con más poder y manejo mi vida.”

Ella, igual a muchos de los individuales extraordinarios cuyas historias aparecen en el reporte, quieren ver DACA convertirse en algo permanente y ellos quieren la solución similar para sus padres, a quien ellos llaman los DREAMers (Soñadores) originales.

Mixtecas not your typical Motorcycle Club

By Anastassia Zvoryguina What comes to mind when you hear the word bikers? Probably most of the people think of big bearded guys and gangs.

But not all bikers are outlaws who like to live on the edge. In fact there are bikers who try to break away from this stereotype. They try to live honorable lives and respect everyone around them. Mixtecas Motorcycle Club is definitely a place where stereotypes are broken and members are more like a family who is always there to help when needed.

Tony Pompa, a veteran who served in the U.S. Army from 2000 to 2006 and had gone to multiple tours to Afghanistan and Iraq, is the president of Mixtecas M.C. Silvis Chapter. He comes from a very patriotic family that has proudly served our country in many wars. In fact, his uncle and namesake Tony Pompa is one of the eight Hero Street heroes. Mr. Pompa his uncle Tony and his father Frank all served in the U.S. Army. Also, the Mixtecas Silvis Chapter is proud to have quite a few veteran members. And that is why you will see the Mixtecas M.C. members participating and volunteering at many of the local veteran’s events and at the Hero Street Memorial and Veterans Day celebrations.

The Mixtecas Motorcycle Club originated in Chicago in 1985, but according to Pompa members of Mixtecas had been visiting Silvis since the early 90s. In fact, unlike a beardy stereotype, some of the original members of the Chicago chapter were also members of the Mexican American Veteran Association (MAVA).

Tony Pompa remembers vividly those visits from the members of the Chicago Chapter.

“When Mixtecas started coming down here I was young and always looked at them and thought I wanted to do that, I wanted to be one of them,” he shared his memories.

He thought that it was something very great to be able to travel the country on a motorcycle and be a rebel, but it was not about rebellion.

“I saw the respect they gave to my parents, the patrons of the VFW and the visitors to Hero Street and most importantly

to each other,” Pompa told.

Actually, Pompa will never forget the day when he had a talk with one of the members of the Mixtecas Chicago Chapter. When he was young his father wanted to see if they could sell him the vest members were wearing and the member requested to talk to young man who wanted that vest.

“He told me that the vest he wore with the Mixtecas warrior on it couldn’t be just bought. It had to be earned, and one day when I was old enough I could have the opportunity to earn one too. I took that to heart,” Tony Pompa shared one of his most favorite memories from his childhood.

When he grew up he got his chance to earn his very own vest. The Silvis chapter of Mixtecas Motorcycle Club was in the works since 2005. On January 27 of 2007 it was opened officially. Members of the Silvis chapter are more than just a group of people who shares their love for motorcycles and open road. They pride themselves in being a family.

“We embrace the brotherhood, comradely, and deep respect we have for one another,” Pompa said.

No matter whether it is a big problem like finances or small problem like taking care of kids, members of the Mixtecas Motorcycle Club are there to help each other. Even if one needs just someone to listen, they will be there just like a family would.

While taking care of their own, they do not forget about the community they live in. Tony Pompa shared that the club participates in various benefits throughout a year. Sometimes community members approach members of the Mixtecas asking for help. That is when members get together and make a decision if they would donate money or they might even put together their own event to collect the necessary amount. Come Christmas time and they make a goal of sponsoring one to three families. They buy gifts for a family in need and they involve their own kids in the process.

“We make it a point to bring our kids when we do the Christmas shopping and the wrapping so that they can see that Christmas is about giving and not receiv-

ing,” Pompa explained.

With all the negative stereotypes and labels of bikers for some people it is hard sometimes to imagine a biker who is more like a friend of the community.

As Tony Pompa said they do enjoy riding their motorcycles, but they also take care of each other and try to show the community that they are honorable people who are active in their community.

“We strive to break the stereotype of Bikers. We are not a gang, we are a club.

We have our own bylaws that dictate how we should act and represent ourselves to maintain the respect we get back from

our community,” Tony Pompa said.

Yes, certainly there are bikers who fit the stereotypes, but not all of them are the same. The Mixtecas Motorcycle Club is a total opposite of the typical biker one would imagine. Mixtecas is a family where respect is earned, not given!

Las Bunny Hoppers reciben reconocimiento por sus buenas obras Este año el Premio de Exchange Club “Book of Golden Deeds” será presentado a Bunny Hoppers, un grupo de cuatro hermanas con la misión de “poner sonrisas en las caras de los residentes de los hogares de ancianos para enseñarles que NO han sido olvidados.”

El Premio de “Book of Golden Deeds” reconoce a aquellas personas y sus buenas obras las cuales pasan por desapercibido. El premio es dado a las personas que hacen cosas buenas sin esperar nada a cambio.

Los Bunny Hoppers empezaron su trabajo en el año 2006. Aquel año ellas visitaron cuatro residencias de ancianos durante el día de Pascua. Este año ellas regalaron 2000 conejitos en 25 residencias de ancianos del área.

Tommie Shadden compartió su experiencia de Bunny Hopper. Ella dijo que un día cuando una de las enfermeras las invitó a conocer a una anciana que no tenía familia. Ellas entraron a su cuarto y le dijeron a la anciana que a ellas les importa y que rezarían por ella.

Una de ellas le regaló un conejo de peluche y la anciana le dijo que ella ya no sentía sola.

“No lo hacemos buscando reconocimiento.

Lo hacemos porque es algo que nos nace en el corazón,” Shadden explicó.

Para Bunny Hoppers es una manera de celebrar Pascua. Shadden dijo que después de visitar las residencias de ancianos ellas manejan en la ciudad y cuando ellas ven a la gente en las calles o sus patios ellas les rega-

lan conejos de peluche.

“A la gente le encanta la sorpresa de ver al Conejo de Pascua en el día de Pascua,” Shadden dijo.

Además, para Bunny Hoppers las memorias que ellas ayudan a la gente a crear es la mejor recompensa por su trabajo. Shadden compartió uno de esos momentos memorables que ellas ayudaron a crear.

“Una vez vimos una familia tomando fotos con sus niños en su jardín. Entonces paramos y les preguntamos si ellos desean tomarse una foto con el Conejo de Pascua. Al agradecernos el padre estaba a punto de llorar y nos dijo que ellos nunca iban a olvidarse de este día de Pascua,” Tommie nos compartió esta historia.

Bunny Hoppers dependen de donaciones – ambos dinero y animales de peluche. Este se convirtió en un trabajo de todo el año. Ellas reciben animales de peluche, los revisan, los limpian y los preparan para regalarlos para el año que viene. Miembros de Exchange Club de los Quad Cities regaló conejos y otros animales de peluche para que Bunny Hoppers los puedan regalar a los ancianos de las residencias de ancianos y a otros.

Bunny Hoppers received Award for their good deeds This year the Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award was presented to the Bunny Hoppers, a group of four sisters, whose mission is “to put a smile on the faces of the nursing home residents to let them know they are NOT forgotten.”

The Book of Golden Deeds award recognizes those whose good deeds otherwise go unnoticed. It acknowledges men and women who work for public good without expecting anything in return.

The Bunny Hoppers started their work in 2006. That year they visited four nursing homes on an Easter day. This year they gave out over 2000 bunnies at 25 area nursing homes.

Tommie Shadden shared her experience as Bunny Hopper. She told us that there was a time when one of the nurses

from nursing home invited them to see one lady who was near her death and had no family of her own. They came in her room and told her that they cared and they would pray for her. One of them gave her a plush bunny and lady said to them that she did not feel alone anymore.

“We don’t do it for recognition. We do it because it’s from our hearts,” Shadden explained.

For Bunny Hoppers this is a way to celebrate Easter. Shadden said that after visiting nursing homes they drive around the town and when they see people on the street or in their yards they give them plush bunnies.

“The people love the surprise of seeing the Easter Bunny on Easter,” Shadden said.

Also, for Bunny Hoppers the memories they help other people to create are the best reward for their work. Shadden shared one of those memorable moments they helped create.

“Once we saw a family taking a picture with their kids in the yard. So we stopped and asked if they’d like to get a picture with the Easter Bunny. The father got teary-eyed as he thanked us and said they’d never forget this Easter,” she told.

The Bunny Hoppers depend on donations – both cash and stuffed animals. It has evolved into an almost year-round task as they sort and clean the donated plush for giving the next year. Exchange Club of the Quad Cities members brought bunnies and other plush animals for the Bunny Hoppers to present to nursing

home residents and others.

Mixtecas no es un típico Club de Motociclistas Por Anastassia Zvoryguina ¿Que le viene a la mente cuando escucha la palabra motociclista (biker)? Probablemente la mayoría de la gente piensa de hombres barbudos y malencarados que están en pandillas.

Pero no todos los motociclistas son maleantes que viven la vida al extremo. De hecho hay motociclistas que buscan romper estos estereotipos. Ellos tratan de vivir vidas honorables y respetan a todo el mundo. El Club de motociclistas Mixtecas es un lugar donde se rompen los estereotipos y los miembros son como una familia quienes siempre están allí para ayudar cuando es necesario.

Tony Pompa, un veterano de guerra que fue parte del ejercito estadounidense entre los años 2000 y 2006 y quien fue a Afganistán e Irak varias veces, es el presidente del Club Mixtecas División de Silvis. Él viene de una familia patriótica. Los miembros de su familia han participado en varias guerras defendiendo este país. De hecho su tío, la persona por quien le dieron su nombre, Tony Pompa es uno de los ocho héroes de Hero Street.

Pompa, su tío, y su padre Frank proporcionaron su servicio militar en el Ejercito de los Estados Unidos. Además de el, muchos de los miembros de Mixtecas División de Silvis son veteranos de las fuerzas armadas. Y es por eso que uno los puede ver participando y siendo voluntarios en varios eventos locales para veteranos y durante las celebraciones de Hero Street y Día de los Veteranos.

El Club de Motociclistas Mixtecas se originó en Chicago en 1985, pero según Pompa los miembros de Mixtecas venían de visita a Silvis empezando desde los principios de los años 90. De hecho a diferencia del estereotipo del hombre barbudo con conexiones delictivos, algunos de los miembros originales de División de Chicago también han sido miembros de Asociación de Veteranos Mexicanos Americanos (MAVA por sus siglas en ingles).

Tony Pompa recuerda bien aquellas visitas de miembros de la División de Chicago.

“Cuando Mixtecas empezaron e venir aquí yo era un niñito y siempre los vi y pensé que yo quería hacerlo, quería ser uno de ellos,” Pompa nos compartió sus recuerdos. Él creía que poder viajar por todo el país en motocicleta y ser un rebelde era algo maravilloso, pero este club no tiene nada que ver con la rebeldía.

“Vi con que respeto ellos trataban a mis papas, los personas del VFW y los visitantes de Hero Street pero más que nada como se trataban entre ellos mismos,” Pompa nos contó.

La verdad es que Pompa nunca va a olvidar el día cuando uno de los miembros de Mixtecas División de Chicago le habló. Cuando era un niño su padre quiso saber si los miembros le podían vender un chaleco que traían ellos para Tony. Uno de los miembros pidió a hablar con el joven Pompa. “él me dijo que el chaleco con el guerrero Mixtecas que él traía puesto no se puede comprar. Uno tiene que ganárselo y un día habrá la oportunidad donde podré ganármelo.

Yo tomé sus palabras en serio,” Tony Pompa compartió uno de sus favoritos recuerdos de su niñez.

Cuando él creció tuvo la oportunidad de ganarse su propio chaleco. La División de Silvis de Club de Motociclistas Mixtecas estaba en proceso de formarse desde el año 2005.

El 27 de enero del 2007 el club oficialmente abrió sus puertas. Miembros de la División de Silvis son mucho más que un grupo de personas que comparte el amor por las motocicletas y camino libre. Ellos se enorgullecen de ser como una familia.

“Acogemos la hermandad, amistad y respeto profundo entre nosotros,” Pompa dijo.

No importa si es un problema grande como problemas financieros o problema pequeño como cuidado de hijos, los miembros del Club de Motociclistas Mixtecas están siempre presentes para ayudarse uno a otro. Y si uno de ellos simplemente necesita alguien con quien hablar, ellos van a estar allí igual como lo haría una familia.

Al cuidar entre ellos mismos ellos no se olvidan de la comunidad donde ellos viven.

Tony Pompa dijo que durante el año el club participa en diferentes eventos benéficos. A veces los miembros de la comunidad buscan a los miembros de Mixtecas y les piden ayuda. Entonces los miembros de Mixtecas se juntan para tomar la decisión de donar dinero o a veces ellos hasta organizan el evento para recaudar fondos. Durante la temporada navideña ellos tratan de patrocinar de una a tres familias. Ellos compran regalos e invitan a sus hijos para que participen en el proceso.

“Tratamos de traer a nuestros hijos cuando compramos y envolvemos los regalos de navidad para que ellos puedan entender que navidad es acerca de lo que uno da no lo que va uno a recibir,” Pompa explicó.

Aún así la imagen estereotípica de motociclistas puede hacer difícil de imaginarlos como amigos de la comunidad. Tony Pompa explicó que ellos les encanta montar en motocicleta pero también ellos se cuidan entre ellos y tratan de demostrar a la comunidad que ellos son gente honorable quienes son

activos y ayudan en la comunidad.

“Buscamos de romper el estereotipo de motociclistas. No somos una pandilla, somos un club. Tenemos nuestras propias reglas que nos dictan la manera de actuar y representarnos para seguir recibiendo el respeto de nuestra comunidad,” Tony Pompa dijo.

Claro que hay motociclistas que son malhechores buscando problemas, pero no todos son iguales. El Club de Motociclistas Mixtecas no tiene nada que ver con el motociclista

típico que uno imagina. Mixtecas es una familia donde el respeto no se regala pero se gana.

Race for the Cure 2015 Hola Staff

The 26th annual Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure took place last Saturday June 13, 2015 outside the iWireless Center. Several thousand participants ran or walked the 5k and the 1.2 mile race.

Proceeds of this event will go toward the fight against breast cancer.

Up to 75 percent of the funds stay in an eight-county area of Illinois and Iowa to provide mammograms and other breast health services for under served and under insured women, with the rest going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for breast cancer research, according to their press release.

Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. It is the most common can-

cer found among every racial and ethnic group.

Race is not a risk factor for breast cancer. But, the rates of getting and dying from breast cancer differ among ethnic groups.

The lifetime probability of dying from cancer is 1 in 6 for Hispanic women. Cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanics.

Screening and good treatment for breast cancer can lower your risk of dying.

Mammograms can find breast cancer early, when survival is highest. Talk with your doctor about which screening tests are right for you.

Carrera por la Cura 2015 El sábado 13 de junio se llevo acabo la Carrera por la Cura Anual número 26 de Komen Quad Cities afuera del iWireless Center en Moline. Miles de participantes corrieron o caminaron las carreras de 5 kilómetros y 1.2 millas. Los fondos recaudados por este evento serán usados para luchar contra el cáncer de mamas.

Según el comunicado de prensa, casi 75% de fondos recaudados se quedan en ocho condados de Illinois y Iowa y se usan para ofrecer mamografías y otros servicios de salud de mamas para mujeres de pocos recursos o sin seguro de salud y el resto se dona a la fundación de Susan G. Komen por la Cura y su programa de investigación sobre el cáncer de mamas.

Además del cáncer de la piel, el cáncer de mamas es el tipo de cáncer más común entre las mujeres en los Estados Unidos.

Es el cáncer más común en cualquier grupo racial y étnico.

¿Dónde celebrar el 4 de Julio?

Parrilladas, desfile y fuegos artificiales es la manera de celebrar a los Estados Unidos el 4 de Julio. Cada pueblo y ciudad del país tendrá diferentes eventos para este día. Para su conveniencia, el equipo de Hola America hizo una lista corta de eventos para celebrar el 4 de julio en los Quad Cities.

Davenport/Rock Island En Davenport la celebración empieza a las 5 PM. Niños podrán disfrutar de brincolines, juegos, pinta caritas, manualidades y escribir una carta a un soldado (USO y Parques y Recreaciones de Davenport ofrecen esta actividad). A las 8 PM habrá la lectura de proclamación y a las 9:30 PM el evento principal de fuegos artificiales. No planee a regresar a la casa tan pronto que se acaben los fuegos artificiales y quédese para escuchar música

del grupo musical local llamado Wicked Liz & the Belly Swirls.

En Rock Island las celebraciones empiezan a las 3 PM en el Parque Schweibert. Habrá brincolines ($5 por pulsera), actividades divertidas para niños, comida en venta. Adultos pueden disfrutar de buenas cervezas en Jardines de Cervezas de Bent River Brewery que van estar en el Great Lawn. Entre las 3:30 PM y 5:30 PM niños tendrán la oportunidad de conocer y tomarse fotos con la sirenita que va estar cerca de la fuente del parque y Rapunzel que va estar en el patio de juegos.

A las 4:30 PM habrá música por The Country Couch Potatoes. Más tarde habrá proclamación y Tributo Militar. Poco después habrá presentación del grupo Smooth Groove y a las 9:30 PM fuegos artificiales.

El desfile será 4 de julio, también habrá festival y fuegos artificiales. Desfile empieza a las 10 AM en la cruce de 23rd Street y State Street. Fuegos artificiales van estar en el parque Middle al anochecer.

How will you celebrate July 4?

Hola Staff Barbecue, parade and fireworks are the way to celebrate the United States on the 4th of July. Every town and city in the country will have events lined up for the day. For your convenience the Hola America staff compiled a short list of events going on in Quad Cities for the 4th of July.

Davenport/Rock Island The celebration starts at 5 PM on Davenport side. Kids will be able to enjoy bouncing houses, scavenger hunt, face painting, crafts and they could write a letter to a soldier provided by the USO and Davenport Park and Recreation. At 8 PM there will be the proclamation reading and stay for the 9:30 fireworks display. Don’t plan to go home right after the fireworks because there will be a musical performance by local band Wicked Liz & the Belly Swirls.

In Rock Island the celebrations will start at 3 PM at Schweibert Park. They will have inflatables ($5 for a wrist band), fun activities for kids, food vendors. Also, adults will be able to enjoy some great brews at Bent River Brewery Beer Gardens

on the Great Lawn. Between 3:30 and 5:30 kids can go hang out and take pictures with the Little Mermaid at the Park Fountain and Rapunzel at Park Playground. At 4:30 there will be a music performance by The Country Couch Potatoes. Later there will be proclamation and Military Tribute. Performance

by Smooth Groove and the evening will end with fireworks at 9:30 PM. Fireworks viewing area are free and located at Modern Woodman Park located at 209 S. Gaines St. in Davenport, IA, LeClaire Park located at 400 Biederbeck Drive in Davenport, IA, Schweibert Park located at 4303 24 th St., Rock Island, IL and Skybridge located at 121 W 2 nd St., Davenport, IA.

East Moline Fireworks for East Moline will be on July 3 at dusk at East Moline Riverfront at the Quarter on 7th Street. There will be live music and shuttle service available. Participants can bring lawn chairs, but no coolers are allowed.

Firecracker Run 5k/10k Races at 7:30 AM. Start and finish lines are at downtown East Moline at 8th Street and 15th Avenue. Kiddie Run is at 8:45 AM, Triumph Community Bank Mile is at 9:15 AM. Also be there for 9:30 AM Awards Ceremony. There will be costume contest, hospital bed races starting at 10 AM and Guns ‘N’ Hoses Challenge. The 57th Annual AMVETS 4th of July Parade will be 4th of July at 1 PM in downtown East Moline from 3 rd Street to 13th Street along 15th Avenue.

Bettendorf Celebrations begins of July 3 from 7 AM to 11 PM on Spruce Hills Drive in front of Cumberland Square. There will be crafts, food, amusement rides and music. On the 4th of July check out the Parade, festival and fireworks. Parade begins at 10 AM at the intersection of 23 rd St. and State St. Fireworks will be at Middle Park at dusk.

Niño atropellado esta luchando por su vida Hay tiempo cuando algunos miembros de comunidad se encuentran en situaciones terribles y este es el tiempo cuando el resto de la comunidad trata de ayudar.

El 3 de junio de este año Cruz Pérez, un niño de 14 años, fue atropellado por un carro cuando estaba paseándose en su bicicleta. Pérez es un niño de un gran corazón y muy estudioso. Y ahora el está luchando por su vida en un hospital en Iowa City.

Este pasado domingo 14 de Junio la comunidad se solidarizo con la familia Pérez y asistieron a una Kermes para recaudar fondos para los gastos médicos. El Col Ballroom en Davenport, Iowa se lleno de gente que disfrutaban de la rica comida y el buen ambiente por los grupos Tamborazo de Oro, La Tremenda del Bajío y Fantasía Musical.

Hubo rifas de bicicletas, televisiones y hasta unos guantes de boxeo autografiados por Manny Pacquiao. Se le agradece a toda la gente que dono algo como Carmen Fuentes de la Joyería de Carmen quien dono un collar para la ayudar.

La familia Pérez pide a la comunidad entera que recen por el niño por su recuperación completa. También, ellos piden por donaciones de dinero para ayudarles pagar por sus gastos médicos. Community rallies for teen fighting for his life In life there are terrible situations that can bring a community together to help another person or family in need.

On June 3 Cruz Perez, a 14-year-old was hit by a car when he was riding around on his bicycle. Cruz is a kind kid with a big heart and very studious at school. And now he is fighting for his life at a hospital in Iowa City.

This past Sunday June 14 the Hispanic community held a fundraiser for the Perez family with a Kermes (Fun Fair) to raise money for medical expenses. The Col Ballroom in Davenport, Iowa was full of people who enjoyed the delicious Mexican food and good atmosphere by the Mexican bands Tamborazo de Oro, La Tremenda del Bajio and Fantasia Musical.

There were raffles of bicycles, televisions and even a pair of boxing gloves autographed by Manny Pacquiao. Thanks to everyone who donated something like Carmen Fuentes from Carmen’s Jewelry who donated a necklace for the raffle.

The Perez family invites the entire community to pray for their child for his full recovery. Also, they ask for donations to help pay for the medical expenses.
