As Fate Would Have It: The Story of Ricky Valenz

By Vey Rodriguez It’s 5 a.m. in New York City. The taxis from the streets below and sirens from multiple Police cruisers can be heard slowly fading off, into the distance.

Ricky Valenz is awake. He can’t sleep from the adrenaline rush. It’s not everyday you’re a capella group gets to audition for a music label; but it’s a dream come true when that record label is Def Jam Records.

The grand Hip Hop label founded by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin.

On this day Tuesday, September 11th, 2001 Ricky Valenz life, in more than one way, would change forever.

Today, Tuesday July 18th, 2017 Ricky is relaxed and having dinner with friends in San Antonio, TX. he took a break from his dinner to talk with Hola America about the long and winding journey of his life and the decision that has spring boarded his career to elite Tejano super stardom almost overnight.

Born in Lansing, Michigan, the son of a General Motors factory worker, Valenz spent his childhood days dreaming of someday playing professional baseball.

Who could blame him?

His family participated in an open door program with The Lansing Lugnuts, a single A minor league baseball club, to house Latin and Hispanic players from overseas through the baseball seasons. That program has seen the likes of former Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano and Houston Astros Slugger, Carlos Beltran, becoming young Ricky’s room mates.

From season to season players would come and go. Each one would leave his own inspiration on the boy who would grow up and eventually don a uniform for team USA, representing the country in Puerto Rico.

As fate would have it life would have other plans for him upon returning home.

“I always had a sense growing up that if I focused on doing something long enough, then I could make it happen on my time.”

Although being of Mexican descent Ricky was raised by a Puerto Rican step mother who he’s seen as his mother growing up. “I was Puerto Rican, I mean my mother was Mexican but I was Puerto Rican and I grew up listening to Bachata, Salsa and Reggaeton and when I was listening to my music it was always Hip Hop.”

Tupac Shakur is who he credits as his Hip Hop influence. With that being said Ricky isn’t your grandma and grandpa’s Tejano star although if he were to come to dinner, they would probably love him.

He uses his body as a canvas for blue ash ink. The women in his videos, whom he swears are hard to work with, wink wink, are scantily clad. His hook filled corridos and cumbias are twisted with free flowing rap lyrics with a profane word here and there. But when he does use profanity it’s poetry. It’s needed. Like a bridge needs support.

He laughs, “I grew up listening to Hip Hop and R&B that’s just what I liked so for a Midwest boy to make it in Tejano music is really rare.” It is. It’s very rare.

“Music has always been a thread throughout my life. My grandpa used to get his guitar out and we all just used to gather round and sing songs.”

Shortly after baseball Ricky would return home and join his friends in an R&B a capella group. The group would gain the attention of Def Jam records who would schedule an appointment for the band in their New York offices at 12 o’clock in September of 2001. Ricky would have to ask work for the time off, after all this was a once in a lifetime chance.

He meditates on this backstage before his shows. His family and his blessings. In that order.

When he speaks of his decision to move from Lansing to San Antonio he mentions, almost without a beat, East Moline, Illinois. A familiar town to him.

It is where his uncles, his birth mother’s siblings, planted their roots and call home.

The well respected late Don Luis Ramos and his equally respected brother Jose Ramos became known for their work as a trio, Los Hermanos Ramos, performing shows with their older brother. The family is deeply cultured in family and very practiced in music. It’s in their blood. From generation to generation it’s passed down and never watered down. It’s in Ricky. Multiplied.

He has the talent that transcends that of musicians that you normally go home and tell other people about.

His video’s, although risqué, show he’s having a good time being Ricky Valenz and enjoying his celebrity. You can see it in his face if you look close enough in his video “Esperandote.” A melody filled

cumbia that has a Happy Days hook before the chorus. His catalog is a refreshing and strong foundation for a young career ready to flourish. If you like to dance “Cosas del Amor” is one of Valenz singles that feels nostalgic with its fluttering chorus accordion, reminiscent of classic La Mafia albums but clever in it’s R&B subtleties.

When Ricky finally went down to the hotel lobby that day in September his conscience spoke to him loudly. As he looked around he had seen the TV screens and the welling in people’s eyes. They were fascinated and fixated on the news.

Like statues. There was a chaos in the air and yet a calm pounding against it.

Ricky was left with one question, “How am I going to get home?” He knew in his heart, there wasn’t going to be a meeting.

In the following days Ricky was stuck in New York City, waiting for an opportunity to go home. The city had shut down for days and he was stuck.

Upon arriving home he would be greeted with the reality of unemployment. He’d been gone for too long. Ricky didn’t sweat it. He was from a Midwest city’s streets, wrapped with thick skin after time. They are towns that can drag you down and keep you there. But Ricky Valenz had the one thing inside him that people these days lack. Motivation, he had a confidence and talent that only God could distribute.

Since Ricky Valenz left Lansing, Michigan for San Antonio not more than 5 months later he was gaining the attention of the Tejano industry. He was nominated and won 3 Tejano Music Awards including “Artist of the Year” and “Best New Male Vocalist of the Year” at the 2015 Tejano Music Awards.

A.B. Quintanilla asked him to be the frontman for the Kumbia Kings All Starz tour last year.

He’s also worked with Gary Hobbes and Jay Perez. His unique approach of blending Tejano and Hip Hop music has gained him a seat at the table.

Now, he’s focused on his solo career and is excited about things to come. When I asked him about Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s monster hit “Despacito” and whether or not he would ever think about taking the path (crossover) that Selena cleared the way for artists like him, he answered, “Yes, I have and am thinking about that.” I can hear him smiling, a sign to me that he doesn’t want to give me too much, “I’m just focused right now and I’m looking forward to doing my thing and bringing my fans my best always.”

Ricky Valenz is a phenomenal Tejano singer with a velvety Boyz II Men style voice. He uniquely blends the styles of Tejano and Hip Hop music.

Como el destino lo marco: La historia de Ricky Valenz Por Vey Rodriguez Son las 5 de la mañana en la ciudad de Nueva York. Los taxis de las calles y las sirenas de los cruceros múltiples de la policía se pueden oír lentamente desaparecer a la distancia.

Ricky Valenz está despierto. No puede dormir de la adrenalina. No es todos los días que eres un grupo a capella llega a la audición de una disquera; Pero es un sueño hecho realidad cuando la disquera es Def Jam Records. La gran compañía promotora de Hip Hop fundada por Russell Simmons y Rick Rubin.

En este día martes, 11 de septiembre del 2001, la vida de Ricky Valenz, en más de una forma, cambiaría para siempre.

Hoy, martes 18 de julio de 2017 Ricky está relajado y cena con amigos en San Antonio, TX. Se tomó un descanso de su cena para hablar con Hola América sobre el largo y sinuoso viaje de su vida y la decisión que le ayudo a lanzar su carrera al super estrellato élite Tejano casi de la noche a la mañana.

Nacido en Lansing, Michigan, hijo de un obrero de General Motors, Valenz pasó sus días de infancia soñando con algún día jugar béisbol profesional. ¿Quién podría culparlo?

Su familia participó en un programa con The Lansing Lugnuts, un solo club de ligas menores de béisbol, para albergar a jugadores de Latinoamérica a través de las temporadas de béisbol. Ese programa ha visto a jugadores como el ex lanzador de los Chicago Cubs Carlos Zambrano y el gran bateador de los Astros de Houston, Carlos Beltrán, convirtiéndose en compañeros de habitación de un joven Ricky.

De temporada en temporada los jugadores iban y venían. Cada uno dejaría su propia inspiración en el niño que crecería y eventualmente se pondría un uniforme para el equipo USA, representando al país en Puerto Rico.

Como el destino tendría que la vida tendría otros planes para él al regresar a casa.

“Siempre tuve la sensación de crecer que si me centraba en hacer algo lo suficiente, entonces podría hacer que sucediera en mi tiempo”.

El es de ascendencia mexicana Ricky pero el fue criado por su madrastra puertorriqueña que él ha visto como su madre creciendo. “Yo era puertorriqueño, quiero

decir que mi madre era mexicana pero yo era puertorriqueño, crecí escuchando Bachata, Salsa y Reggaeton y cuando estaba escuchando mi música siempre era Hip Hop”. Tupac Shakur es quien él acredita como su influencia Hip Hop. Con eso te dice que Ricky no es la típica estrella de música Tejana al que están acostumbrados tus abuelos, aunque si ellos lo conocieran probablemente les encantaría.

Utiliza su cuerpo como un lienzo para la tinta de ceniza azul. Las mujeres en sus videos, a quienes el jura (bromeando) que son muy difíciles de trabajar, están escasamente vestidas. Sus corridos llenos de coros y cumbias están encrespados con letras de rap que fluyen libremente con una palabra profana aquí y allá. Pero cuando usa blasfemia es poesía. Es necesario.

Como un puente necesita apoyo.

Se ríe: “Crecí escuchando Hip Hop y R & B, eso es lo que me gustó, así que para un chico del Medio Oeste tenga éxito en música la tejana es muy raro”. Es muy raro.

“La música siempre ha sido un hilo en toda mi vida. Mi abuelo solía sacar su guitarra y todos solíamos reunirnos para cantar canciones”.

Poco después del béisbol Ricky regresaría a casa y se uniría a sus amigos en un grupo de R & B a capella. El grupo obtendría la atención de la disquera Def Jam que programarían una cita para la banda en sus oficinas de Nueva York el 12 en septiembre del 2001. Ricky tendría que pedir a su trabajo permiso para ausentarse un par de días, después de todo esto era una oportunidad que solo te llega una vez en la vida. Es donde sus tíos, los hermanos de su madre biológica, plantaron sus raíces y llamaron casa. El muy respetado ya fallecido don Luis Ramos y su igualmente respetado hermano José Ramos se conocieron por su trabajo como trío, Los Hermanos Ramos, realizando espectáculos con su hermano mayor. La familia es profundamente cultivada en familia y muy practicada en la música. Está en su sangre. De generación en generación se transmite y nunca se diluye. Está en Ricky. Multiplicado. Él tiene el talento que trasciende a los de los músicos que normalmente impresionan a quienes los ven.

Su video, aunque risqué, muestra que el se está divirtiendo siendo Ricky Valenz y disfrutando de su celebridad. Se puede ver en su cara si se mira lo suficientemente cerca en su video “Esperandote”. Una cumbia llena de melodía que tiene un hook Happy Days antes del coro. Su catálogo es una base refrescante y fuerte para una joven carrera lista para florecer. Si te gusta bailar “Cosas del Amor” es uno de los singles de Valenz que se siente nostálgico con su acordeón de estribor, que recuerda a los clásicos álbumes de La Mafia pero inteligente en sus sutilezas de R & B. Cuando Ricky finalmente bajó al vestíbulo del hotel ese mismo día de septiembre, su conciencia le habló fuertemente.

Mientras miraba a su alrededor, veía l a s pantallas de televisión y los ojos de la gente con lagrimas. Estaban perturbados y clavada su atención en las noticias.

Estaban como estatuas.

Había un caos en el aire

y sin embargo una calma tensa.

Ricky se quedó con una pregunta: “¿Cómo voy a llegar a casa?” Él sabía en su corazón, no iba a haber una audición.

En los días siguientes, Ricky estaba atrapado en la ciudad de Nueva York, esperando la oportunidad de volver a casa. La ciudad se había cerrado durante días y estaba estancado.

Al llegar a casa sería recibido con la realidad del desempleo. Había estado fuera durante demasiado tiempo. Ricky no se preocupo. El era de las calles de una ciudad del Medio Oeste, ya con callo en estas situaciones. Son pueblos que pueden arrastrarte y mantenerte allí. Pero Ricky Valenz tenía la única cosa dentro de él que mucha gente hoy en día carece. Motivación, él tenía una confianza y un talento que sólo Dios le pudo haber dado.

Desde que Ricky Valenz dejó Lansing, Michigan para San Antonio no más de 5 meses después él ya se ganaba la atención de la industria de la música Tejana. Fue nominado y ganó 3 Premios de Música Tejana incluyendo “Artista del Año” y “Mejor Nuevo Vocalista Masculino del Año” en los Premios de la Música Tejana 2015.

Hoops 4 Hope building community through sports

United We Ball, a nonprofit leadership organization that looks for ways to improve the Quad Cities area through sports and community projects, and the East Moline Police Department would like to invite families from the community to the Hoops 4 Hope event that will take place on August 8 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hereford Park located at 400 13th St., East Moline, IL. Hoops 4 Hope had its first event last year and it was successful.

“Last year this event was created to unify the community at a time where that was incredibly important. Kannon Burrage saw a way to help and Captain Reagan helped make it happen. After such a successful and impactful event, we decided to use the momentum from that event to do something positive in the community,” Patricia Hansen from the East Moline Main Street Association, explained.

Hansen added that the East Moline Main Street was very involved with the planning of this family friendly event. And thanks to this careful planning, a lot will be going on during Hoops 4 Hope. Everyone planning to attend can expect bounce houses, giveaway bikes, sign up for free toy giveaway, free food, and of course the basketball games all throughout the night. Come on down to East Moline’s Freedom Fest Aug.19

Summer is getting closer and closer to its end and school is about to start, but that does not mean that the fun should stop. East Moline Main Street Association invites everyone in the community to the Freedom Fest that will take place August 19 from 1:00 PM to Midnight at downtown East Moline on 15th Avenue.

This is one of the biggest events for East Moline and there is a lot to do and a lot of fun and games to enjoy.

Freedom Fest, a family friendly event, will start with a variety of demonstrations. There will be dynamic demonstration from Nyquist’s Roundhouse Martial Arts and an energetic fun demo from She Z Studio (Zumba Fitness). Jessie White Tumblers will wow the crowd with their best gymnastic moves and the Police K9 unit

will make a presentation as well. The Mayor will join with the Military for the Project Toy Drop.

The “Project Toy Drop – Kids Wish Network” will be bringing in truckloads of toys to distribute to over 1500 area military children and children in need. We will be celebrating children as our Hero’s and our Future.

We have reached out to local Military and other organizations to gather and get children signed up for this special event,” Patricia Hansen from East Moline Main Street Association explained.

Later that evening jam to the music played by Funktastic 5, Fran and The Country Gentlemen and more dancing and music performances.

All these demonstrations and presentations will be at the new stage area that was built this year in downtown East Moline.

Everyone who loves to shop for unique and one of a kinds items will be delighted to know that Freedom Fest will have more than 70 different vendors selling a wide range of items including crafts. In addition to items for sale there will be food for sale and Bent River Brewing Company will offer domestic/craft beers and food as well.

Car lovers rejoice, because Freedom Fest will also feature the 10th Annual Main Drag Car Show, which this year will include motorcycles as well.

Since Freedom Fest is a family event, children will have a lot of fun activates waiting for them. Besides, the usual Balloon Artist, Face Painter, Inflatables and other activities, children will also have a chance to explore the Military Vehicles, Fire and Police.

Families at Freedom Fest will also have a chance to see the local firefighters, law enforcement officers, and military members competing at the Obstacle Course Challenge.

“This will pit local fire fighters, law enforcement, military and CrossFit gyms in a battle for bragging rights. Proceeds going back to Local Military Charities,” Hansen stated.

Freedom Fest is not like any other event out there.

It is unique and filled with fun for all families from the communities. Shopping, demonstrations, food and music are just some of the great things happening on August 19 in downtown East Moline. Take time off your routine and make it a fun night at Freedom Fest in East Moline on August 19, 2017 from 1:00 PM to Midnight at 15th Avenue in downtown East Moline.

Freedom Fest de East Moline el 19 de Agosto Por Anastassia Zvoryguina El verano esta por acabar y la escuela empezara pronto, pero esto no tiene que decir que ya se acabo la diversión. East Moline Main Street Association invita a toda la comunidad al Freedom Fest que será el 19 de agosto de la 1:00 PM hasta la medianoche en el centro de East Moline en la 15th Avenue.

Este es uno de los eventos más grandes en East Moline y hay mucho que hacer y muchos juegos y diversión para disfrutar. Freedom Fest, un evento familiar, va a empezar con una variedad de demostraciones. Habrá una exhibición de artes marciales de Nyquist’s Roadhouse Martial Arts y una demostración energética de She Z Studio (Zumba). Jessie White Tumblers van a sorprender al público con sus movimientos de gimnasia. La Unidad de K9 de policía va a tener una presentación también. El alcalde va a unirse con las fuerzas armadas para el Proyecto Toy Drop.

Los amantes de carros se van a contentar porque Freedom Fest también tendrá el Show de Carros “10th Annual Main Drag Car Show”, y este año además estarán presentes motocicletas.

El Freedom Fest es un evento familiar, habrá muchas actividades divertidas para todos. Se espera un artista de globos, Pintacaritas, brincolines y otras actividades, también los niños tendrán la oportunidad de explorar los vehículos militares, camión de bomberos y carro de policía.

dad de ver bomberos, policías y miembros de fuerzas armadas competir en el Obstacle Course Challenge.

“Esto va a poner a bomberos, policías, miembros de fuerzas armadas y miembros de gimnasio CrossFit en una batalla por honra. Las ganancias serán donadas a las caridades de fuerzas armadas locales,” Hansen declaró.

Freedom Fest es diferente a otros eventos. Es único y lleno de diversión para familias enteras de la comunidad. El Quad Cities Ballet Folklórico presenta Mexican Fiesta X Por Anastassia Zvoryguina El zapateado al ritmo de la música de Mariachi, el sonido de los vestidos hermosos al cortar por el aire y las sonrisas iluminando las caras de los niños bailando música mexicana tradicional. El Quad Cities Ballet Folklórico quiere invitar los miembros de la comunidad a su recital anual Mexican Fiesta X que será el 12 de agosto del 2017 a las 7:00 PM en la Catedral Scottish Rite ubicada en el 1800 7th Ave en Moline, IL. El precio del boleto es de solo $8.

El Quad Cities Ballet Folklórico (QCBF por sus siglas en inglés), fue fundado por Arnulfo Camarillo en 1984, y “es una organización no lucrativa que enseña cultura mexicana a la comunidad por medio de baile,” según su página Web. Ray Ter-

ronez, Jr., el director de QCBF, explicó que el grupo de baile sigue creciendo y ahora hay aproximadamente 100 estudiantes entre 4 y 18 años de edad. El Quad Cities Ballet Folklórico es un grupo de baile muy conocido en los Quad Cities y sus alrededores. A lo largo del año ellos se presentan en varios eventos y festivales.

El último recital del QCBF fue en el 2015.

El evento de este año tendrá bailes de los siguientes estados de México: Chiapas, Sinaloa, Veracruz, Jalisco y otros.

“Planeamos presentar nuestros bailes actuales de diferente manera, para que el público tenga una experiencia diferente, también vamos a presentar bailes nuevos,” el director Terronez nos dijo. “Crecemos en progresión y esperemos darle enfoque a las adiciones nuevas que nunca antes había-

mos hecho.”

El Quad Cities Ballet Folklórico es una organización sin fines de lucro y por eso ellos buscan el apoyo de los miembros de la comunidad. Pero el director Terronez nos explicó que este grupo de baile hace mucho más que enseñar la cultura mexicana por medio del baile.

“Nosotros somos más que un grupo de baile. También hemos establecido un programa de mentores llamada Pasos Con Amigos, un programa educacional donde estudiantes aprenden variedad de información sobre los estados que ellos bailan,” el director Ray Terronez, Jr. compartió.

Arnulfo Camarillo empezó con un grupo pequeño de niños que deseaban aprender a bailar bailes mexicanos tradicionales, ahora el Quad Cities Ballet Folklórico sigue

The Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico presents Mexican Fiesta X

By Anastassia Zvoryguina See the stomping of the feet to the rhythm of the music, the swooshing of the beautiful dresses and big smiles on the faces of the children dancing to traditional Mexican music. The Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico would like to invite community members to their annual recital Mexican Fiesta X that will be on August 12, 2017 at 7:00 PM at the Scottish Rite Cathedral located at 1800 7th Ave in Moline, IL. The ticket price is $8.

The Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico (QCBF), founded in 1984 by Arnulfo Camarillo, “is a non-profit organization that teaches the Mexican culture to the community through the art form of dance,” according to their website. The QCBF director Ray Terronez, Jr., explained that the dance group has been growing and now they have about 100 students of ages between 4 to 18 years old.

The Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico is a well known dance group in the Quad Cities and surrounding area. They perform at many different events and festivals throughout the year.

Last time the QCBF had their recital event was in 2015. This year the event will feature dances from some of the following states from Mexico: Chiapas, Sinaloa, Veracruz, Jalisco and others.

“We have plans to present our current dance material in a different way so that it is a new experience for our audience members, as well as showcase a few new dances,” direc-

tor Terronez stated. “We thrive on progression and hope to highlight new additions that have never been done before in our history.”

Since The Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico is a not for profit organizations, they rely on the support of their community. But director Terronez explained that this dance group does a lot more than just teaching Mexican culture through dance.

“However, we are more than a dance group/ We also have established a mentor program called Pasos Con Amigos as well as an educational program where the students learn about a variety of facts from the states they are dancing,” Director Ray Terronez, Jr. shared.

From a small group of eager kids willing to learn to dance traditional Mexican dances started by Mr. Camarillo, The Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico keeps on evolving and growing. Come out and support this local organization while learning about Mexico through beautiful dances done by children from the community.

Ray Torres de Sterling y Veterano de la Guerra en Vietnam, será el orador principal en la celebración de la visita del monumento “The Wall That Heals” en WIU-QC Por Anastassia Zvoryguina La Guerra con Vietnam también conocida como la Guerra de Indochina tomó lugar en Vietnam, Laos y Camboya. El 1 de noviembre del 1955 se considera como el comienzo de la guerra. La guerra llegó a su fin con la caída de Saigón el 30 de abril de 1975.

Manifestaciones en contra de la guerra en Vietnam y el tratamiento injusto a los veteranos no es algo que muchos quieren recordar. En vez de un abrazo de bienvenida o una palabra de ánimo, los veteranos de la Guerra en Vietnam a menudo enfrentaban personas que les escupían o decían groserías. Estos días la gente demuestra respeto a los veteranos, pero los veteranos de la Guerra en Vietnam también merecen respeto y nuestro aprecio igual a los veteranos de otras guerras. El Monumento de Veteranos de Vietnam es una de las maneras para honorar a los soldados fallecidos.

Raymond Torres es un veterano de la Guerra en Vietnam quien fue entrevistado para el documental Vietnam in HD del History Channel. Ray Torres fur parte de la fuerza naval, E Company 2/26 Marines, 3ra División Marina. Él sirvió entre el otoño de 1967 y la primavera de 1968. El Sr. Torres nació en Cheneyville, Louisiana. Sus padres eran campesinos de México. Ray Torres fue uno de 13 niños. En búsqueda

de una educación que le mejorara la vida, Raymond Torres se unió a la fuerza naval.

Desde que era pequeño Sr. Torres soñó con una profesión en el campo de la medicina. Él pensó que ser parte del ejército con la fuerza naval y estudiar después para ser médico iba a ser un buen plan para su futuro.

En 1967 lo mandaron a Vietnam. Allí lo asignaron al Marine Corps Company que estaba patrullando alrededor de Phu Bai. Pasaron meses y de repente el Sr. Torres se encontró en medio de la batalla más larga de la Guerra con Vietnam para los estadounidenses – el combate en Khe Sanh.

Esta batalla duró 77 días y como Ray Torres estuvo asignado en uno de puestos de defensa alrededor de la base marina, él y sus hombres fueron parte de una de las peores batallas de cerca.

Mientras que atendía a los marinos que fueron heridos en la batalla, una granada explotó a una distancia a tan solo 3 pies de él y lo hirió. Lo sacaron de ahí en helicóptero medico. Raymond Torres nunca regresó a Vietnam. Al regresar a su casa él tuvo que aprender de vivir la vida como un veterano quien siempre llevara en su corazón y mente los horrores de la guerra, también él aprendió que ya no podía estudiar para ser médico. Su padre estaba gravemente enfermo y para cuidar de su padre enfermo el Sr. Torres salió de la fuerza naval cuando le faltaban solo 3 meses para cumplir con su contrato de 4 años. Por los siguientes 30 años él trabajó en una fábrica de acero local en Sterling, Illinois. Pronto el Sr. Torres se casó, tuvo hijos y hasta estudió para sacar su licencia de EMT (técnico de emergencias médicas).

Cuando la fábrica cerró, Ray Torres encontró trabajo en la Cruz Roja, donde él sacaba sangre para análisis.

El Sr. Torres compartió con Hola America que le tomó muchos años para poder empezar a hablar sobre la guerra y su experiencia horrorosa.

[Fue] algo sorprendente cuando uno regresó y los estadounidenses tuvieron sentimientos negativos en vez de respeto,” el Sr. Torres explicó. “Por mucho tiempo tuve problemas lidiando con esto y aquellos que no regresaron, no recibieron honores y respeto.”

El Sr. Torres dijo que aunque cada persona es diferente, Monumentos como el de los Veteranos de Vietnam y The Wall That Heals pueden tener un afecto de sanación para los veteranos. Él explicó que los veteranos pueden tomarse tiempo para hablar con aquellos quienes tienen su nombre en la pared.

Juan and Dolores Barajas: A love story 70 years in the making

By Anastassia Zvoryguina Marriage is a delicate dance. It requires two people to find compromise when comprise seems to be impossible. It teaches people to love each other’s faults. All in all, marriage is hard work that truly needs both parties to work together. Maybe that is why so many fail, but also, a lot of couples make it. And those who make it are the ones we celebrate. Yes, 10 years or 20 years of marriage is a milestone, but 70 years together is a lifetime that can only unite the real soul mates.

Juan y Dolores Barajas are the real life soul mates, and the couple is celebrating 70 years of love this year. Let us go back in time, before this beautiful celebration of love, before six children, before the successful restaurants Lolita’s Café and Old Mexico that couple ran during their life.

Before all that there was just young girl named Dolores who met and fell in a love with young man Juan. Every love story has a beginning; this is the love story of Dolores and Juan Barajas.

Juan Fidencio Barajas Cervantes was born in Donna, Texas, but raised in Mexico. In the late 1940s of last century when World War II was finally over people were full of hope for a better tomorrow and Juan was not an exception. While working in a newspaper in Mexico City he met a young woman. The couple fell in love and got married in 1947. They slowly settled in the daily routine of marriage. Years were passing and family was growing. After a while, the couple realized that a “better tomorrow” can be easier achieved up north.

By 1958 the decision was made and Juan left to the United States shortly after. After arriving in the United States, he worked different jobs while living with some relatives in Moline, while Dolores and the kids were in Mexico waiting for him to send for them.

For two long years the couple was living in different countries, divided by miles and miles of land. People now talk how hard it is to have a long distance relationship, but imagine being far away from the love of your life and the only way you might communicate is through regular letter mailing or what is now known as “snail mail.” For two years Juan and Dolores lived separately, longing to see each other, loving and waiting for the day they could be reunited again.

Being a strong willed woman, Dolores made a decision not to continue waiting, but go to Juan herself. She gathered her documents and went to the US embassy in Mexico. She was done waiting for tomorrow. She was going to make tomorrow happen. The official assisting asked her what town she wanted to go to, her answer was Moline, IL to which he replied that he was also from Moline, IL. Once the embassy approved visas for her and her children, they packed and headed north to reunite with husband and father. Dolores did not let Juan know they were coming.

“We came all the way from Mexico City by train to the border and then we came

by Greyhound [bus] all the way from El Paso to Moline. My mom alone with five of us kids,” Linda, Juan and Dolores oldest daughter, shares her memories.

Now imagine being alone in an unfamiliar country, where everyone around you speak a language you don’t understand and there are five children with you, who get tired and frustrated as much or sometimes even more than adults. For many this is a nightmarish situation, but Dolores is not the one to whine.

While traveling by bus, Linda recalls that they missed their connection in Springfield, IL and Dolores had to find the way to spend the night. When she was preparing her kids to spend the night at the bus station a worker at the station told her she could not stay there. Seeing the communication barrier the station worker called a local convent where a Spanish speaking nun spoke to her and arranged for them to stay at a hotel paid by the local church and that a police officer will pick them up to take to the hotel.

Linda the oldest daughter recalls that the police officer introduced himself in Spanish as the Police Chief and said that his mother was also from Mexico.

“He was tall and handsome. He looked like the movie star John Gavin” Linda recalls.

The next morning the police chief took them for breakfast before sending them off on the bus.

“He gave each one of us kids a dollar” Linda added.

After a few hours on the bus Dolores and the children were in the Quad Cities. Now imagine after all the adventures on the road you finally arrive at your intended destina-

tion, but no one is there to greet you. You don’t know the address or how to get to the residence. Dolores Barajas knew that Juan worked at the Le Claire Hotel and luckily at that time the Moline Greyhound station was across the street from the Le Claire Hotel.

At that time Juan Barajas worked as a bellman at the old Hotel Le Claire. For Juan it was a regular day like any other. He was working, while thinking again and again for ways to bring his family over. Never in a million years could he have imagined that that particular day he will finally see Dolores and the kids, after two years of living apart. As Juan Barajas remembers that on that day one of his coworkers was asking him if he was married. He thought that it was a question so strange and out of the blue that he replied her that he was and asked her why was she asking. And to his surprise he was told his wife and kids came to hotel asking for him. He could not believe his ears, after all Dolores supposed to be in Mexico. Was it a joke? So he went to check at the back door. And what do you know; there she was with five kids in tow.

Mario the oldest of the boys ran up to Juan shouting “Papá”. Two long years of living in separate countries ended in the surprise of his life for Juan Barajas.

They say love surpasses frontiers, in the love story of Dolores and Juan love literally crossed the border. After the reunion in1961, that could be a movie script or romance novel, the couple started to build their lives in Quad Cities. They opened their first business Lolita’s Café in 1965 in Moline. That same year they had their first US born child Dolores or Dee Dee for short and Juan landed a job at John Deere Harvester. In the 70s and 80s they had Don Juan’s Taco House and Cantina in downtown Moline. While Dolores ran the restaurant, Juan worked at John Deere.

“They’ve always been so united in what they’ve achieved. You hang around with them, you work,” Linda describes her parents.

The Barajas were working hard and living surrounded by loving family. Years were passing. Juan and Dolores were enjoying their retirement, traveling to Mexico and back. They were satisfied with life and the success their children had achieved. Unfortunately, nobody is free from the adversities of life. There is nothing worse in life

than for parents to see their children die before them. Dolores and Juan Barajas had to endure this pain. The couple lost their son Mario and daughter Marcela only a few years apart. Dolores was devastated.

Part of her heart was torn out, and she was looking for ways to calm the pain of their loss. The kitchen made her pain more bearable and the couple came out of retirement opening Lolita’s Taco House in Silvis.

“Cooking is in my heart,” Dolores explained. Cooking was the balsam that healed her soul.

Now retirement was out of the question.

They went on and in 2003 Juan and Dolores opened Old Mexico, while Lolita’s Taco House was run by their youngest daughter. Her cooking was a healing force for Dolores, for her customers it was enjoyment of delicious foods. They might not work in a restaurant anymore, they finally retired for good last December, but they continue loving each other every day a little bit more than yesterday.

Dolores and Juan Barajas started their journey together 70 years ago in 1947.

They lived life loving each other and making it work. In spite of the misfortunes they had to go through their love did not fizzle out, instead it grew stronger. Marriage is a delicate dance, Juan and Dolores Barajas know very well how to dance this romantic bolero. Theirs is the story of enduring love that crosses borders and endures pain, grows stronger and more beautiful. 70 years of marriage not just any anniversary, but it is THE anniversary. Congratulations to Juan and Dolores Barajas for a lifetime of love.

Requiere que dos personas encuentren un mutuo acuerdo cuando el mutuo acuerdo parece ser imposible. El matrimonio enseña a la gente a amarse a pesar de las fallas que tengan. Al fin de cuentas el matrimonio es trabajo pesado que de verdad necesita que las dos personas den de si mismas. Sí, es cierto que un matrimonio de 10 años o de 20 años es un logro grande, pero estar juntos por 70 años es una vida entera y es una verdadera unión de almas gemelas.

Juan y Dolores Barajas son almas gemelas verdaderas y este año la pareja está celebrando 70 años de su amor. Vamos a regresar al pasado, antes de esta celebración de amor bonita, antes de sus seis hijos, antes de los restaurantes exitosos, Lolita’s Café y Old Mexico, que la pareja manejó durante sus vidas. Antes de todo esto había solo una jovencita llamada Dolores que conoció y se enamoró de un joven llamado Juan. Cada historia de amor tiene su comienzo y esta es la historia de amor de Juan y Dolores Barajas.

Juan Fidencio Barajas Cervantes nació en Donna, Texas, pero creció en México.

A los finales de los años 1940 del siglo pasado, cuando el mundo se estaba recuperando después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la gente estaba llena de esperanza por un mañana mejor y Juan no era la excepción. Mientras trabajaba en un periódico en México, D.F. él conoció a una jovencita.

Los jóvenes se enamoraron y se casaron en 1947. Poco a poco se asentaron en la rutina diaria de la vida matrimonial, los años estaban pasando y la familia estaba creciendo. Tiempo después la pareja entendió que en el norte se podía conseguir un mañana mejor y con más facilidad. Para 1958 la decisión fue tomada y pronto Juan se partió hacia los Estados Unidos. Al llegar a los Estados Unidos, él trabajó en diferentes trabajos mientras que vivía con algunos de sus familiares. Dolores y los niños estaban en México esperando que él los trajera.

Por dos largos años la pareja vivía en dos países separados, divididos por miles de kilómetros de distancia. Hoy en día la gente suele hablar sobre relaciones a distancia, pero imagínese estar lejos del amor de su vida y la única manera de comuni-

carse con ellos es escribirse cartas por correo. Por dos años Juan y Dolores vivieron separados, anhelando verse el uno al otro, y esperando por el día cuando ellos pudieran reunirse de nuevo.

Siendo una mujer tenaz, Dolores tomó la decisión de no seguir esperando, e irse ella y sus hijos hacia donde estaba Juan.

Ella juntó sus documentos y fue a la embajada de los Estados Unidos en México.

Ella iba a hacer que el mejor mañana llegara más pronto. El oficial que le ayudó le preguntó donde pensaba ella ir y al contestarle que ella iba a Moline, él le dijo que él era también de Moline, IL. Después de que la embajada aprobó sus visas para ella y sus hijos, ellos empacaron sus maletas y se fueron al norte para reunirse con su esposo y padre. Dolores no le avisó a Juan que ellos ya estaban en camino.

“Llegamos de México D.F. hasta la frontera en el tren y de allí tomamos el autobús de Greyhound desde El paso hasta Moline.

Mi mama sola con nosotros cinco de sus hijos,” Linda, la hija mayor de Juan y Dolores, comparte sus memorias.

Ahora imagínese estar sola en un país desconocido, donde todo el mundo habla un idioma que usted no entiende y hay cinco niños con usted y ellos se cansan y se frustran tanto o hasta más que un adulto.

Para muchos es una pesadilla, pero Dolores no es alguien que se queje.

Mientras que iban en el autobús, Linda recuerda que, en Springfield, IL, ellos iban a cambiar de autobús, pero no llegaron a tiempo. Dolores tuvo que buscar la manera para pasar la noche. Cuando ella estaba preparándose para pasar la noche en la estación de autobús, un trabajador de la estación le dijo que ellos no podían quedarse allí. Al ver que no lo entienden, la trabajadora llamó a un convento local donde había una monja que hablaba español. Gracias a esta conversación la familia pudo quedarse en un cuarto de hotel pagado por la iglesia.

La monja le dijo que el jefe de policía los iba a llevar al hotel.

Linda, la hija mayor, recuerda que el policía se presento en español y dijo que su mamá de el también era de México. “Él era un hombre alto y atractivo. Él se parecía a la estrella del cine, John Gavin,” Linda recuerda.

llevo a desayunar antes de mandarlos en autobús hacia su parada final Moline. “él nos dio un dólar a cada uno de nosotros, los niños,” Linda agregó.

Después de horas en el autobús Dolores y los niños al fin llegaron a los Quad Cities. Ahora imagínese después de todas esas aventuras en el camino usted por fin llega a su destino, pero no hay nadie allí para darle la bienvenida. Usted no conoce la dirección o como llegar a la casa. Dolores Barajas solo sabía que Juan trabajaba en el Hotel Le Claire y por suerte en aquel entonces la estación de autobús de Greyhound estaba al cruzar la calle del Hotel Le Claire en Moline. Juan Barajas trabajaba de botones en el viejo hotel Le Claire. Para Juan este era un día igual a otros. Él estaba trabajando mientras que pensaba en las maneras de cómo traer su familia a los Estados Unidos.

Nunca en su vida él pudo haber imaginado que ese día en particular después de dos años de vivir en países diferentes, él iba por fin a encontrarse con Dolores y los niños. Juan Barajas recuerda que ese día una de sus compañeras de trabajo le preguntó si él estaba casado. Él pensó que era una pregunta rara e inesperada. Entonces él le contestó que si que el estaba casado y le preguntó porque ella quería saberlo. Y para su sorpresa le contesto que su esposa y sus hijos habían llegado al hotel preguntando por él. Él no podía creerlo, el pensaba que Dolores estaba aun en México. ¿A caso era una broma? Entonces él fue hasta la puerta trasera para ver que pasaba. Detrás de puerta estaba Dolores con sus cinco hijos. Mario, el hijo mayor, corrió hacia él gritando, “papá.” Para Juan Barajas, dos años largos viviendo en países separados terminó con la sorpresa de su vida.

Dicen que el amor pasa fronteras, en su historia Juan y Dolores cruzaron la frontera literalmente. Después de su reunión del 1961, que podía haber sido una película romántica o novela de amor, la pareja empezó a construir sus vidas en los Quad Cities. Ellos abrieron su primer negocio, Lolita’s Café, en 1965 en Moline. Este mismo año ellos tuvieron su única hija nacida en los Estados Unidos y la llamaron Dolores o Dee Dee de cariño y Juan consiguió trabajo en John Deere Harvester. En los años 70 y 80 ellos tuvieron Don Juan’s Taco House and Cantina en el centro de Moline. Mien-

tras que Dolores manejaba el restaurante, Juan trabajó en John Deere.

“Siempre han sido tan unidos en sus logros. Si estabas junto con ellos, tenías que trabajar,” Linda describió sus padres.

Los Barajas siempre han trabajado duro y han estado rodeados de sus seres queridos.

Los años pasaban, Juan y Dolores estaban disfrutando de su retiro, viajando entre México y Estados Unidos. Estaban satisfechos con la vida y el éxito que sus hijos lograron en sus vidas. Desafortunadamente, nadie puede escapar las desdichas de la vida. No hay nada peor en la vida que los padres ver sus hijos morir antes de ellos. Dolores y Juan tuvieron que sufrir esta pena doblemente. La pareja perdió su hijo Mario y su hija Marcela en un plazo de algunos años. Dolores estaba destrozada.

Parte de su corazón fue arrancado y ella buscaba las maneras de calmar su dolor de la perdida de sus hijos. La cocina le ayudó a sobrellevar el dolor y la pareja salió del retiro para abrir el restaurante Lolita’s Taco House en Silvis.

“El cocinar está en mi corazón,” Dolores explicó. La cocina fue la medicina para su alma.

Ahora el retiro fue cosa del olvido. Ellos siguieron y en el 2003 ellos abrieron el restaurante Old México, mientras que su hija menor administraba Lolita’s Taco House. Cocinar fue la salvación para Dolores, para sus clientes era el placer de sus platillos deliciosos. Ellos ya no trabajan en el restaurante, la pareja apenas se retiró en diciembre del año pasado, pero ellos siguen amándose cada día un poco más.

Hace 70 años, en 1947, Juan y Dolores Barajas empezaron un camino juntos. Ellos vivieron su vida amándose y cuidando su matrimonio. A pesar de todos los problemas que tuvieron que enfrentar su amor no se apagó sino creció más fuerte. El matrimonio es un baile delicado, Juan y Dolores saben muy bien como bailar este romántico bolero. Su historia es una historia de amor duradero que cruza fronteras y sobrevive el dolor y la distancia creciendo más fuerte y bello. 70 años de matrimonio no es un aniversario cualquiera, es EL aniversario de todos los aniversarios. Felicidades a Juan y Dolores Barajas por una vida de amor.

Ray Torres veteran from Sterling, IL will be the keynote speaker at The Wall That Heals opening ceremony at WIU-QC Campus

Vietnam War is also known as Second Indochina War occurred in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The starting date for it is considered November 1 of 1955 and it came to an end with the fall of Saigon in April 30 of 1975.

Antiwar protests and bad treatment of veterans is not something many wish to remember. Instead of a welcoming hug from people and a warm word of encouragement Vietnam War veterans were often spat on and called bad names. Nowadays people show their respect to veterans, but Vietnam War veterans also deserve respect and our appreciation as do veterans of other wars.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is one of ways to honor the fallen soldiers. And on July 27 to 30 The Wall That Heals, a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, comes to WQPT on the campus of Western Illinois University. Each day during this event there will be different activities planned and WQPT will be also recording interviews with veterans on July 29 starting at 12 PM to add to the Veterans History Project. Sterling resident and Vietnam War Veteran Ray Torres will be the keynote speaker for the opening ceremony on Thursday July 27 at 9AM Raymond Torres is a Vietnam War veteran who was featured in the History Channel documentary called Vietnam in HD. Ray Torres was a Navy Corpsman, E Company 2/26 Marines, 3rd Marine Division. He served between fall of 1967 and spring of 1968. Mr. Torres was born in Cheneyville, Louisiana. His parents were sharecroppers from Mexico. Ray Torres was one of the 13 children. In search education that would greatly improve his life, Raymond Torres joined the Navy. Since he was small, Mr.

Torres dreamed of getting a profession in a medical field. He thought becoming a Navy Corpsman and later pursing a career in a medical field was a good course for his future.

In 1967 he was sent to Vietnam. There they assigned him to a Marine Corps Company that was patrolling around Phu Bai. A few months passed by and suddenly Mr. Torres found himself smacked right in the middle of America’s longest battle of the Vietnam War – siege at Khe Sanh. This battle lasted for 77 days and since Ray Torres was stationed on one of the defensive outposts around the Marine base, he and his men were part of some of the most horrible close quarters fighting.

While taking care to the marines that were hurt in the fighting he was injured himself when a grenade exploded just within 3 feet of him. He was medevac from the base. Raymond Torres never returned to Vietnam again. When he returned home, he did not just have to learn to live as a veteran who probably will always carry the baggage of the horrors of war somehow through life, but also, he could no longer pursue his dream career in a medical field.

His father was gravely ill and Mr. Torres took an early discharge from the military, with only 3 months left of his 4-year tour, so he could take care of his sick father. For the next 30 years Mr. Torres worked at local steel factory in Sterling, Illinois. After he got married and had children, Mr. Torres got his EMT license and once the factory closed, Raymond Torres worked in the Red Cross, where he drew blood.

Mr. Torres shared with Hola America that it took him many years to open up and talk about the war and his horrific experience.

“The ones that paid the price did not get recognition for what they did. It bothered me. [It was] jaw dropping when you got

back and Americans had a negative feeling instead of respect,” Mr. Torres explained.

“For a long time I had problems dealing with that and the ones that did not make it back, did not receive honor and respect.”

Mr. Torres said that although every person is different, Memorials like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and The Wall That Heals do have some healing effect on the veterans. He explained the veterans can take their time and talk to the ones listed on the Memorial wall.

“Acknowledging the feelings they had and the way they were treated, it does help.

Talking to veterans of the Vietnam War [can have] healing effect. It helps to open up to the veteran on the wall,” he said.

Mr. Torres feels very honored to be the keynote speaker for the opening ceremony at The Wall That Heals visit to the WIUQC Campus.

“It is a humbling experience. It is difficult to talk about, but with the documentary and everything I have done, it has helped me. It is an honor,” Ray Torres said.

Veterans of the Vietnam War did not get the respect they deserved, but it is not too late to thank them for the sacrifice they made and give them a hug of belated welcome acknowledging the horrors they experienced. Opening up about his experiences is a way Ray Torres brings attention of the country to this issue. “[This is] my way to remind the country because of their sacrifice this is the greatest country in the world,” Ray Torres concluded.

The Wall That Heals, a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, along with a mobile Education Center, is coming to WQPT on the campus of Western Illinois University – Quad Cities and will be open 24 hours a day and free to the public.

The Wall That Heals honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed forces in the Vietnam War and it bears the names of the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.

“We are honored to have The Wall visit at this time as WQPT gets ready to air Ken Burns’ new documentary ‘The Vietnam War’ in September,” said Mary Pruess WQPT General Manager. Excerpts from the documentary will be available to view.

On July 26 The Wall will be escorted by the Patriot Guard through LeClaire, Iowa cross I-80, following a route that includes Rapids City, Hampton, East Moline and continuing on River Drive until it reaches its destination on the campus of Western Illinois University – Quad Cities.

The Opening Ceremony will begin at 9:00 am with a keynote address by Ray Torres on July 27. And the closing ceremony will take place on Sunday, July 30 at 4:00 pm with an address by Dr. Art Tate.
