A mis carnales: la Marcha de las Mujeres, el movimiento “Yo también” y mi cumpleaños Por Roberto Carmona La semana pasada fue mi cumpleaños.

Cumplí cincuenta y tres años. Lo más relevante de mi cumpleaños es que todos los sábados antes, almuerzo con mis hijas. Ese sábado no hubo almuerzo porque mis hijas asistieron a una Marcha de Mujeres.

No se preocupen, esto no es una historia tipo “soy un tipo sensible”, es una historia tipo de “por qué era tan ignorante”. Con el impulso del movimiento “Yo también”, para ustedes quienes no lo entienden, tendrá sus consecuencias. Las mujeres están siendo serias. Lo sé, porque crie hijas que luchan por sí mismas.

Reflexiono sobre mi cumpleaños en el contexto de momentos significativos de la historia, como “Yo también”. Lo juro, fue un día de 1987, yo tenía veintidós años, terminaba la universidad, la Unión Soviética aún existía, y escuchaba a Santana en mi grabadora y la película “La Bamba” estaba exhibiéndose en el cine.

En 1987, yo estaba en calma, con mi peinado de pelo largo por detrás y corto por enfrente muy popular en el medio oeste, bigote y gafas, levis 501 ajustados, un verdadero hombre al gusto de las damas (al menos, eso pensaba). “juega el juego” era mi lema. Me la pasaba en los clubes y disfrutando de la vida de soltero. Solo importaba yo y cualquier chica que en ese momento estuviera ligando. Mi madre decía, ‘un día, Dios te dará hijas’. Yo contestaba “Whatever (lo que sea) mamá” y me puse mi nueva chaqueta negra “Members Only”, me subí a mi Ford Escort negro y me dirigí al “Club subterráneo” para aprovechar el especial de dos cervezas dobles y bailar al ritmo de Salt & Peppa “Push It “, mientras ponía mi verbo seductor a prueba con la linda chica de Rock Falls de la cual estaba interesado. ¡Bang!! Dos años después, en 1991, se desata la Guerra del Golfo, JFK está en los cines y “Black or White” de Michael Jackson suena en la radio. Las mangas de mi chaqueta “Members Only” esta rasgadas y manchadas con salsa de taco y mostaza, y mi Ford Escort con la transmisión descomponiéndose. Estoy casado con bebés. Ambas mujeres. Tonantzin y Xochitl.

Ahora si me importaba cómo la sociedad trataba a las mujeres. Como padre, tomé muy en serio mi papel de protector de mis hijas. Dejé de aceptar y cuestioné comentarios como “Actúas como una niña”, “Las niñas no ha-

cen esas cosas” y “A los niños no les gustarán si son demasiado inteligentes”. Les recordé a mis hijas, nunca piensen “son menos que” porque son chicas.

En la escuela primaria apoyé y alenté a mis hijas a postularse para el consejo estudiantil. Xochitl estaba en tercer grado y venció a un niño de sexto grado en una plataforma de dibujos animados en la cafetería para el almuerzo. Ella sabía que los alumnos de tercer grado superaban en número a los de sexto grado.

Conforme iban llegando a la adolescencia, les iba hablando acerca de importantes mujeres líderes como Dolores Huerta. Les hice hincapié en la importancia de la educación.

En los deportes, mis chicas querían ganar tanto en fútbol como baloncesto, les expliqué que si el árbitro no las veía, le metieran un codazo en las costillas de su oponente (está bien, no soy perfecto).

Tuve discusiones con ellas sobre el poder, los niños, los hombres y el sexo, las puse a leer libros como las “48 Leyes del Poder”, y vimos y analizamos las películas de “El Padrino” para que aprendieran a tener las armas mentales para sortear en sus viajes sus microbatallas con hombres y mujeres que bloquearan su avance.

Hoy, Tonantzin y Xochitl son mujeres, graduadas universitarias y han crecido hasta convertirse en profesionistas muy inteligentes,

orgullosas, tenaces y respetadas. Tuvieron mucha gente buena a su alrededor a lo largo de su viaje. Mi pequeña pieza en el proceso fue ser su modelo masculino.

Por lo tanto, para ustedes, amigos cercanos, papás, hermanos, primos y amigos varones, sean comprensivos y sensibles al Movimiento “Yo También” y por qué es importante para las mujeres en su vida. El respeto y el apoyo serán recíprocos, y ustedes se convertirán en una mejor persona por ello.

Este sábado no tuvimos mi almuerzo de cumpleaños debido a la Marcha de las Mujeres, pero antes de una lagrima y un moco ... mis chicas me enviaron un mensaje de texto, el almuerzo de cumpleaños se llevó a cabo el domingo. Fue un gran regalo de cumpleaños pasar tiempo con mis hijas, pero también con mujeres fuertes.

Coya’s Café es una empresa pequeña familiar local. Tres generaciones de mujeres fuertes han aprendido el arte de cocinar auténtica comida mexicana. “¿Cuál es nuestro sabor especial?Cocinamos con amor” dice Blanca Moran propietaria de Coya’s Café.

El nombre es en honor a su madre Cordelia “Coya” Limon Alor. Ella era una maravillosa mujer de negocios y cocinera. Ella fue dueña de restaurantes en México y los Estados Unidos.

El objetivo de Coya’s Cafe es lograr que sus clientes experimenten una atmósfera mexicana única a través de su comida casera, bebidas, refrigerios, postres, regalos y precios económicos.

A Cut Above the Rest: The New Style Hair Academy is here!

Miguel Rosas will launch the New Style Hair Academy in Moline on February 6, 2018.

Most of the residents of Moline are quite familiar with the New Style Barbershop. Miguel Rosas, the owner of the business, has been operating it since 2007. Mr. Rosas is a quite known personality in the circles of barbers.

His claim to fame came in the summer of 2014 when he cut an image of Col. Sanders (Kentucky Fried Chicken) free hand into the hair of one of his associate’s son. That image went viral and many news outlets sought him out. He even was casted to appear in a short lived reality show “Cedric’s Barber Battle.” Starting February Mr. Rosas is opening his own New Style Hair Academy (NSHA).

With this new hair academy, Mr. Rosas is not planning to simply teach his students to do a quality buzz cut, which of course is important to do, but to connect hairstyling and barbering into one.

“What makes NSHA so special is that we have talented professionals who are very passionate about teaching,” Miguel Rosas explained. “In our program, we are bridging the gap between hairstyling and barbering and creating what we call, a ‘Hybrid Barber’.”

It sounds like a hard mission to complete, but it surely is possible for someone as experienced as Miguel Rosas, who fell in love with his profession at a tender age of 12 years old.

“I knew that I wanted to cut hair for a living when I was 12 years old,” Mr. Rosas shares his memories and experiences. “I used to cut my own hair, friends’ in the neighborhood and my brothers’ hair. I was good and everyone used to tell me that I should be a barber.”

“I thought they made a lot of money too so that was always a good thought,” he laughs remembering himself at a younger age.

Miguel Rosas explained that when he started to cut hair, he realized that he might have a gift. Since it was something he truly enjoyed doing and had

a talent for doing, he learned fast and soon he was “doing really cool artwork in hair” that set him apart from other barbers.

“I also learned to be a good community leader and be a good role model to younger people,” Mr. Rosas proudly said.

Living up to his ideal of being an example to follow for others and passion for his profession were the leading forces that pushed him to open New Style Hair Academy.

“I have a gift and I want to share it with the world,” Mr. Rosas said.

For Miguel Rosas this new business venture is promising to be successful.

There is no better teacher and mentor then someone who truly loves what he does and wishes to share his knowledge with others.

Classes at New Style Hair Academy are set to start on February 6, 2018, but the academy will accept students until the chairs will get filled. Nueva Academia de Corte de Cabello: ¡New Style Hair Academy está Aquí!

La mayoría de los residentes de Moline conocen bien la Barbería New Style.

Miguel Rosas, el dueño del negocio, abrió la barbería/peluquería en 2007. El Sr. Rosas es un hombre muy conocido en los círculos de barberos. Su llamado a la fama llegó en el verano del 2014 cuando cortó, a mano libre, la imagen de Coronel Sanders (Kentucky Fried Chicken) en la cabeza del hijo de uno de sus asociados. Esa imagen se hizo viral y muchos medios de comunicación lo querían entrevistar. Incluso lo seleccionaron para participar en el breve reality show llamado “Cedric’s Barber Battle” (La Batalla de Barberos de Cedric).

En febrero el Sr. Rosas va a abrir su propia Academia de corte de Pelo New Style (NSHA por sus siglas en inglés).

Con su nueva academia de corte, el Sr. Rosas no está planeando enseñar simples cortes a máquina, por supuesto es importante saber hacerlo, sino que busca el Sr. Rosas es conectar lo que hace el estilista con lo que hace el barbero.

“Lo que hace a NSHA tan especial es que tenemos profesionales talentosos quienes tienen pasión por enseñar,” explicó Miguel Rosas. “En nuestro programa buscamos a conectar al estilista con el barbero creando algo que llamamos ‘Barbero Hibrido’.”

Esto se escucha como una tarea difícil de completar, pero seguramente es posible para alguien tan profesional como Miguel

Rosas, quien se enamoró de su profesión cuando apenas tenía 12 años de edad.

“Sabía que quería cortar pelo y ganarme la vida de esa manera cuando tenia tan solo 12 años,” el Sr. Rosas nos comparte sus memorias y experiencias. “Yo me cortaba mi propio cabello, el cabello de mis amigos y mis hermanos. Lo hacía tan bien que todos me decía que debería de ser peluquero.”

“Creía que ganaban mucho dinero, por lo que pensé que era buena idea,” se ríe recordando cuando era más joven.

Miguel Rosas explica que cuando empezó a cortar el pelo, se dio cuenta que tenía ese don. Y como era algo que de verdad le gustaba hacer y tenía el talento para hacerlo, lo aprendía fácilmente y pronto ya estaba “haciendo obras de arte maravillosas en el pelo” que lo puso a un nivel distinto en comparación con otros barberos.

“También aprendí a ser un buen líder comunitario y ejemplo a seguir para los jóvenes,” dice con orgullo el Sr. Rosas.

Tratar de vivir como un ejemplo a seguir para otros y la pasión por su profesión fueron las fuerzas que lo motivaron a abrir New Style Hair Academy.

“Tengo un don y lo quiero compartir con el mundo,” dijo el Sr. Rosas.

El nuevo negocio de Miguel Rosas promete ser un éxito. No hay mejor maestro y mentor que alguien que de verdad ama lo que hace y quiere compartir sus conocimientos con otros.

To my Bros: Me Too, the Women’s March and my birthday

By Roberto Carmona Last week was my birthday. I turned fifty-three. The highlight of my birthday every year is that the Saturday before, I have brunch with my daughters.

Last Saturday there was no brunch because my daughters were attending a Women’s March.

Don’t worry this is not “I am such a sensitive guy story”, this is a “why was I so ignorant” story. With the momentum of the “Me Too” movement, for you guys who don’t get it, there will be consequences. Women are not playing.

I know, I helped raise daughters who fight for themselves.

I reflect on my birthday in context of significant moments in history, like “Me-Too”. I swear, just the other day it was 1987, I was twenty-two, finishing college, the Soviet Union was still around, and I was listening to Santana on my cassette player and the film “La Bamba” was playing at the movie theatre.

In 1987, I was smooth, in my Midwestern Mullet hairstyle, tight Levi 501s, mustache and aviator glasses, a real lady’s man (at least I thought I was). “Play on Player” was my motto.

I was partying at the clubs and enjoying the single life. It was about me and whatever girl I had at the time or one that I was chasing. My mother would say, ‘one day, God will give you daughters’. I would say “whatever mom” and put on my new black “members only jacket”, get in my new black Ford Escort and head to the “Underground Club” for the two for one double bubble beer special and dance to Salt and Peppa’s “Push It”, while I laid my seductive rap on the cute Rock Falls’ girl I was scoping.

Pow! Two years later 1991, the Gulf War is being waged, JFK is at the Theatres and Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” is on the radio. My “members only jacket” sleeves are now ripped and stained with faded taco sauce and mustard, and my Ford Escort had a bad transmission. I am married with babies. Both girls. Tonantzin and Xochitl.

How society treated women mattered to me now. As a father, I took my role as protector to my daughters seriously. I quit agreeing with and questioned comments like “You act like a girl” “Girls don’t do those things”, and “Boys won’t like you if you are too smart”. I reminded my girls, don’t ever think “you were less than” because you are girls.

In elementary school, I supported and encouraged my girls to run for student council. Xochitl was in the third grade and beat a sixth-grade boy on a platform of cartoons in the cafeteria for lunch. She knew the third graders outnumbered the sixth-grade vote.

As they got to be teenagers, I would talk to them about significant women leaders like Dolores Huerta. I stressed the importance of education. In sports, my girls wanted to win and for soccer and basketball, I explained that if the referee was not looking, throw an elbow to your opponent’s ribs (Okay I am not perfect).

I had discussions with them about power, boys, men and sex, I had them reading books like the “48 Laws of Power”, and we watched and analyzed “The Godfather” films so they could have mental weapons to navigate in their journeys for their micro-battles with men and women who served as barriers to their advancement.

Today, Tonantzin and Xochitl are

women, college graduates and have grown to be very intelligent, proud, tough and respectful professionals.

They had a lot of good people around them along their journey. My little piece in the process was to be a male role model.

So, for you bros, dads, tios, brothers, primos and male friends be supportive and sensitive to the Me-Too Movement and why it is important to the women in your life. The respect and support will be reciprocated, and you will become a better person for it.

Last Saturday we did not have my birthday brunch because of the Women’s March, but before I get the lagrimas and a mocos…my girls made

Bacon and Beer are Coming: Bacon and Beer Fest Returns to The RiverCenter

By Nicholas Cunningham This winter has been a brutal one so far for the Quad Cities. But on Saturday, February 3rd, instead of everyone just saying “Brrrr,” everyone will be saying, Brrrrrr-ing on the bacon!”

The River Center in downtown Davenport, IA will host the 4th Annual Bacon and Beer Fest, featuring bacon themed culinary concoctions and beer samples from returning Quad City establishments like Eastern Iowa Baking Company and Backpocket Brewing as well as a few new ones like, Baked Beer & Bread Co. and Virtue Cider.

“Last year was the first year we sold out,” said Jade Presents LLC Event Marketing & Sales Partnerships Coordinator, Shelby Sachs.

“It was a huge jump last year. It gets better and better each year.”

And as an added bonus and exclusive to the Quad Cities, the event will be held the day before the Super Bowl where patrons will be able to participate in football themed games for pigskin and pork themed prizes. “We’ve always had it the weekend of the Super Bowl,” said Sachs. “There is a fun Pigskin Classic theme we have in your area that we don’t have anywhere else.”

And if all that isn’t enough to bring you out to celebrate all that is bacon and beer, Jade Presents LLC is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters in Davenport. “We love partnering with

Big Brothers Big Sisters in your area and giving back to the community.” said Sachs.

(Family Features) Heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke are among the most common causes of illness, disability and death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These chronic conditions and the factors that lead to them can be more common or severe in minorities, including Hispanics.

For example, 4 out of 10 Hispanics die due to heart disease or cancer, and they are 50 percent more likely to die due to diabetes than Caucasians, according to the CDC. Services like Chronic Care Management (CCM) can help people living with chronic conditions coordinate care services and lead to better outcomes and higher satis-

faction.

If you are a Medicare beneficiary with two or more chronic conditions, ask your doctor about CCM and see if you’re eligible for connected care, including services such as: • At least 20 minutes a month of CCM services.

• Personalized assistance from a dedicated health care professional who will work with you to create a care plan.

• Coordination of care between your pharmacy, specialists, testing centers, hospitals and more.

• Phone check-ins between visits to keep you on track.

• Emergency access to a health care professional 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

• Expert assistance with setting and meeting your health goals.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Health Resources and Service Administration introduced the “Connected Care” campaign to help raise awareness about the benefits of CCM. The campaign has free resources, including an animated video in English and Spanish that can help you learn more.

Talk to your doctor to see if CCM is available to you and visit Medicare.gov to learn more about the benefits of the program.
