La iglesia de Santa María en Sterling celebrará su primera Kermes anual Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Diversión, juegos, música y comida deliciosa. El domingo 26 de agosto de 12 p.m. a 6 p.m., la Iglesia de Santa María en Sterling tendrá su primera Kermes anual.

Esta Kermes será para recaudar fondos y cubrir los gastos de la visita de Nuestra Señora la Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos que vendrá a la Iglesia de Santa María en Sterling del 8 al 10 de octubre.

“Tener a Nuestra Señora, la Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos en nuestra parroquia es un honor”, explicó Graciela Macías, organizadora de este evento.

“Desafortunadamente, muchas personas no pueden viajar para verla en México, así que esta es una oportunidad maravillosa para que la visiten en nuestra parroquia”, dijo la Sra. Macías. “Organizar este evento ha sido un desafío que decidí asumir porque personalmente le debo mucho a la Virgen y mi fe en ella y en la iglesia es algo que aprecio profundamente”.

Traer a Nuestra Señora la Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos a Sterling costará dinero, por lo que la Kermes es una buena forma de recaudar fondos al mismo tiempo que todos se divierten. La Kermes de la Iglesia

St. Mary’s Church in Sterling will celebrate its first annual Kermes

By Anastassia Zvoryguina Fun, games, music, and delicious food. Sunday August 26 from 12 PM to 6 PM St. Mary’s Church in Sterling will have its first annual Kermes.

This Kermes is being held to raise funds for the expenses of the traveling statue of Our Lady the Virgen de los Lagos that will come to St. Mary’s Church in Sterling in October 8 through 10.

“Having Our Lady the Virgen of San Juan de los Lagos at our parish is a honor,” Graciela Macias, organizer of this event, explained.

Ms. Macias explained that many people who make requests such as asking for a sick family member to get bettger to Our Lady the Virgen of San

Juan de los Lagos and once the request is fulfilled, the person that made the promise must make a pilgrimage to the Virgen’s shrine.

“Unfortunately, many people are not able to travel to see her in Mexico, so this is wonderful opportunity for those to come and visit her in our parish,” Ms. Macias said. “Organizing this event has been a challenge that I decided to take on because I personally owe a lot to the Virgen and my faith to her and the church is something I cherish very deeply.”

Since to bring Our Lady the Virgen of San Juan de los Lagos to Sterling will cost money, the Kermes is a great way to raise funds while having fun. Kermes of St. Mary’s Church in Sterling will take

place at the church’s parking lot located at 600 Avenue B in Sterling, IL. Ms. Macias shared that there will be tasty food and music by Sentido Musical, folkloric dances and of course raffles. The little ones will be able to enjoy a variety of games and face painting too.

A special night for Kaiden “For two years, I’ve been looking for a way to get Kaiden involved in the QCBF. His mother took on a very big role with the group and so he was always around, watching practice from the side. I started teaching Sinaloa last year knowing that one day I wanted him to be the Toro in Toro Mambo. About 6 months ago, we finally started to make plans and it was tonight that it became a reality for him. Special thanks to Art and Jessica Muños for constructing the bull for us. The night was full of memories and I’m glad we were able to create one for him and his family. Nothing is impossible! Thanks Sonia Herrera and Breon Hickman!”

The first Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit in Illinois Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit (IES) is in the process of expanding to different locations across the country and on Friday July 27 they held their first summit in Illinois at the TaxSlayer Center on Moline.

The Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit has been very active in Iowa. Many entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs attended and took advantage of the annual event in the past 11 years as well as many mini summits across Iowa.

Lt. Governor for IL Evenlyn Sanguinetti was the keynote speaker at the IES and she shared her experience on being the daughter of immigrants and the entrepreneurial spirit immigrants have.

Hola America was honored to be recognized by the IES with the Outstanding Immigrant Business Award. Other recipients of awards that day were Carmen Fuentes of Moline, Robert Lilly of Silvis and Mr Bob Ontiveros was presented with the Immigrant Champion Award an award given to a non-immigrant who is dedicated to making a positive impact on the immigrant community.

The Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit was founded in 2008 by Ying Sa, Principal Certified Public Accountant from Community CPA & Associates. According to their website the purpose of this organization is “to bring businesses of diverse backgrounds together to share, learn and cele-

brate the immigrant entrepreneurship experience and contribution to the overall community.�

La Primer Cumbre de Empresarios Inmigrantes en Illinois La Cumbre de Empresarios Inmigrantes (IES) está en proceso de expansión a diferentes lugares en todo el país. Y el viernes 27 de julio llevaron a cabo la primer cumbre anual de Illinois en el TaxSlayer Center en Moline.

La Cumbre de Empresarios Inmigrantes ha sido muy activa en Iowa.

Muchos empresarios y aspirantes a empresarios han asistido y aprovechado el evento anual en los últimos 11 años, así como muchas mini cumbres en todo el estado de Iowa.

La Vicegobernadora de IL Evenlyn Sanguinetti fue la oradora principal en

el IES y compartió su experiencia sobre ser hija de inmigrantes y el espíritu emprendedor que tienen los inmigrantes.

Hola América tuvo el honor de ser reconocidos por el IES con el Premio al Negocio Inmigrante Sobresaliente.

Otros recipientes de premios ese día fueron Carmen Fuentes de Moline, Robert Lilly de Silvis y Bob Ontiveros recibió el Premio de Campeón de Inmigrantes, un premio otorgado a un no inmigrante que se dedica a tener un impacto positivo en la comunidad de inmigrantes.

Daughter’s Dream for Dads Comes True on Sylvan Island

By Nicholas Cunningham Over twenty years ago, Jesse, Don and Buck Perez, best known to the West End of Moline as part of the Sylvan Island Dreamers, took the task of spearheading a renewal project to improve and keep Sylvan Island open and family friendly. It was a place the three knew all too well from their childhood days and Jesse recalled fond memories of the river. “When I was growing up,” said Perez. “Right when June hit and school was out, we’d go down there and swim.”

This past May, the daughters of the Dreamers, Jesse’s daughter Franki Cunningham, Don’s daughter Benita DeLoach and Buck’s daughter Gloria Perez-Loy, along with the support of their families wanted to do something for their father’s to commemorate their hard work on the Island and to preserve their early brotherly bonding phase of life. “My cousin Dodi’s Dad (Buck) had passed the previous year and we were having a conversation about how loved ones are here one day and gone the next,” said Franki. “She wanted to memorialize her Dad someway and because he loved his brothers so much, a

bench on Sylvan Island was the perfect location.”

Each of the daughters have fond memories of their dads on Sylvan Island, whether it was when they were young or later in their years when they saw their fathers put in countless hours on the Island, cleaning, building fishing piers and pretty much doing anything and everything you could think of to make it look great. Even Jesse recalled his little sister Rosemary running to their dad on the bridge. But if you ask Benita, the word fond might not be the first word she would pick to use when reminiscing about the Island. “Personally, I was terrified of the bridge,” said Benita. “J (Benita’s brother) remembers catching his first fish there and I think the best thing was it was important to my Dad and how cool it was for him to share it with us. It was one nice way to bond with him.”

Well, that bridge was given a complete makeover in May and could not be more inviting now. And as Jesse and Don both share a birthday on Aug 6th, they also share the sentiment that their brother Buck can rest easy knowing that they, along with all those that visit the Island can enjoy the bench dedicat-

ed to them as well. “It was a peaceful and fulfilling moment in my life knowing that my Daddy’s legacy lives on now,” explained Gloria. “He would be pleased to know that it is there if someone needed to sit and rest.”

With a picture of their brother in his hand and his other brother Don at his side, the bench was given an official blessing early this summer by Dea-

con Joseph Dockery from St. Pius X Church in Rock Island, but it was Jesse’s blessing along with Don’s that made their lifetime on Sylvan Island more meaningful and now, never forgotten. “The park is looking very good now,” said Jesse. “The Dreamers took it over and really fixed it up. We just wanted to make it look nice.”

Cada una de las hijas tiene buenos recuerdos de sus papás en Sylvan Island, ya sea de cuando eran jóvenes o más grandes cuando vieron a sus padres pasar incontables horas en la Isla, limpiando, construyendo muelles para pesca y haciendo prácticamente cualquier cosa para que se viera ge-

nial. Incluso Jesse recordó a su hermanita Rosemary corriendo hacia su padre en el puente. Pero si le preguntas a Benita, la palabra “cariño” podría no ser la primera palabra que elegiría para recordar la isla.

“Personalmente, estaba temerosa por el puente”, dijo Benita. “J (el hermano de Benita) recuerda haber hecho allí su primera pesca y creo que lo mejor es que fue algo importante para mi papá y genial el compartirlo con nosotros. Fue una buena forma de vincularse con él”. ¡Vaya, el puente fue remodelado por completo en mayo y no podría ser más atractivo ahora! Y como Jesse y Don cumplieron años el 6 de agosto, también comparten el sentimiento de que su hermano Buck pueda descansar tranquilo sabiendo que ellos, junto con todos los que visitan la isla, tam-

bién pueden disfrutar de la banca dedicada a ellos. “Fue un momento de tranquilidad y satisfacción en mi vida sabiendo que el legado de mi papá sigue vivo”, explicó Gloria. “Estaría complacido de saber que está allí por si alguien necesitara sentarse y descansar”.

Con una foto de su hermano en la mano y de su otro hermano Don al lado, la banca recibió una bendición oficial de parte del diácono Joseph Dockery de la iglesia de San Pío X en Rock Island a principios de verano, pero fue la bendición de Jesse junto con la de Don que hizo que su vida en Sylvan Island fuera más significativa y ahora no será olvidada. “El parque se ve muy bien ahora”, dijo Jesse. “Los Soñadores se hicieron cargo y realmente lo arreglaron.

Solo queríamos que se viera agradable”.

Marvel Universe LIVE! Comes to Moline

By Anastassia Zvoryguina Spider-Man and Iron Man are great superheroes, but when Capitan America, Thor, Black Panther, Hulk, Black Widow, Wasp and Iron Fist join them then everyone on the planet can feel safe. And once everyone’s favorite super heroes unite with Guardians of the Galaxy then the universe is in good hands. A great show is coming to Quad Cities, filled with superheroes, battles, stunts and of course a great story line that will satisfy even the pickiest superhero fan out there. Marvel Universe LIVE! Age of Heroes will be at the TaxSlayer Center in Moline from Friday August 31 to Sunday September 2, 2018. Tickets are on sale now.

According to Jay Christensen, Athletic Trainer for Marvel Universe LIVE!, who also takes care of maintaining the health of over the 100 performers of the stunt show, this show is “a brand new show [where] the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy unite” along with Spiderman and Doctor Strange, master of the mystic arts, to fight the villains and try to recover the Wand of Watoomb before Loki gets it. There will be more than 25 of everyone’s most favorite Marvel heroes and villains.

“It is appealing to many families, teens kids and parents,” Mr. Christensen told us about Marvel Universe LIVE! Age of Heroes. “[There will be] motorcycles, explosions and action packed fights.”

The show promises many special effects, aerial maneuvers, pyrotechnics, martial

arts, great motorcycle stunts and 3D video projection mapping.

“It is like going to a movie and watch the Marvel movie [unfold] right in front of [the audience],” Mr. Christensen described this amazing show. He also invited everyone “to take advantage” of the show and go see this heart pumping, stunt filled performance.

“If you saw other Marvel Show Live, this is different,” Mr. Jay Christensen explained to the fans of Marvel Universe. “If you enjoyed it the first time, the second time is even better. There are returning characters, but this is a new story line.”
