La Cumbre de Empresarios Inmigrantes lleva 10 Años ayudando a personas a alcanzar el Sueño Americano Por Tar Macias

El 18 de noviembre la Cumbre de Empresarios Inmigrantes de Iowa (IES por sus siglas en inglés) va a celebrar su décimo aniversario. Este año IES será más grande que nunca. Se espera que más de 1,000 dueños de negocios inmigrantes de todo el medio oeste de los Estados Unidos vayan a asistir a la cumbre en el FFA Enrichment Center DMACC Ankeny Campus.

La Cumbre de Empresarios Inmigrantes es el evento anual que junta negocios de antecedentes diversos para compartir, aprender y celebrar las experiencias de empresarios inmigrantes y sus contribuciones a la comunidad.

Cada aspecto de la Cumbre, empezando desde las historias de éxito de empresarios inmigrantes durante la ceremonia de premios hasta compartir conocimientos de negocios en áreas como de leyes, comercio internacional, contabilidad, mercadotecnia y tecnología en aulas, todo esto fue diseñado para inspirar empresarios inmigrantes y no inmigrantes nuevos hacer su “Sueño Americano” una realidad.

Hace 10 años, tres dueños de negocios inmigrantes empezaron la Cumbre de Empresarios Inmigrantes. Esta organización no lucrativa fue creada para educar a los dueños de negocios inmigrantes sobre lo básico de empezar y operar un negocio exitoso en los Estados Unidos. Desde su creación IES sigue abogando por dueños de negocios inmigrantes y ofreciendo un lugar donde los dueños de negocios pueden darse a conocer con negocios más grandes de la comunidad en nuestro estado y el país IES ofrece oportunidades para todos por medio de educación y red de contactos, pero más que nada

esta organización cree en enseñanza, afecto y aprecio.

Ying Sa, una de las fundadores y presidente actual de IES, es también empresaria inmigrante, ella es la fundadora y Contadora Publica Principal Certificada de Community CPA & Associates, Inc. Originaria de China y ex residente de Canadá, Ying sirvió cinco años como vicepresidente de Controllers para Wells Fargo Financial Inc. en Des Moines, IA y seis años como el Oficial de Finanzas Principal de Iowa Manufacturing Extension Partnership de la Universidad del Estado de Iowa.

“Soy una inmigrante. Estoy muy agradecida con toda la gente que me dieron la bienvenida y me apoyaron a mí, mi negocio, mi familia y a mis hijos,” Ying Sa dijo. “Juntos celebraremos la unidad, el compartir y más que nada el aprendizaje. “Notablemente, en los Estados Unidos el crecimiento en el número de los negocios de dueños latinos superan el crecimiento en el número entre otros negocios. Esta tasa de creación de negocio alta es única en los Estados Unidos porque la tasa de crecimiento mediana de cinco años en el número de negocios latinos es el doble o triple del promedio nacional a lo largo de los últimos quince años. Este crecimiento presenta una gran oportunidad para expandir la economía de los Estados Unidos,” – Reporte del Estado de Empresarios Latinos 2016, hecho por la Iniciativa Empresa Latina de Stanford.

“El negocio es una habilidad que se aprende. Uno no es más inteligente que los demás, uno simplemente sabe como manejar el sistema,” Sa explico. “Cualquiera puede ser empresario – no importa de donde vienes o que

‘Comprender, aceptar y aprender’

Los nuevos habitantes de Iowa fue el tema del panel “Changing Iowa” Por Adam Sodders Cortesía del Times Republican “¿Cómo le podemos dar la bienvenida a los nuevos residentes de Iowa a nuestras comunidades?”

Ese fue el tema principal durante el panel de la platica comunitaria del Des Moines Register “Changing Iowa” (Cambiando Iowa) la tarde del jueves en el Midnight Ballroom, donde el columnista del Register Kyle Munson encabezó el proceso.

“Por muchas razones, Marshalltown es un gran lugar para hablar de esto”, dijo Munson.

Marshalltown es una comunidad con mucha diversidad en comparación con muchas otras en el centro de Iowa, y este panel incluyó líderes latinos locales. Entre estos, se presentaron el presidente ejecutivo de Marshalltown Regional Partnership, David Barajas Jr, la gerente comercial de YMCA-YWCA de Marshalltown Wendy Soltero y Karina Hernández miembro de la Junta Escolar de Marshalltown, y la coordinadora de Child First Ready de la Comunidad Mid-Iowa (MICA).

Munson y el director del Centro de Liderazgo e Integración de Inmigrantes de Iowa y profesor de antropología de la Universidad del Norte de Iowa, Mark Grey, completaron el panel.

“Lo bueno de tener gente como Wendy y Karina, y muchas otras... es que realmente se están involucrando es que nos están dando la oportunidad de servir como ejemplos para los niños más pequeños”, dijo Barajas sobre los líderes con descendencia étnica en Marshalltown, agregando la importancia de que los niños de esos grupos tengan el ejemplo de los adultos en su comunidad.

El tema importante que se tocó el jueves fue el de incluir a los nuevos habitantes de Iowa en sus nuevas comunidades.

Crecer como nieto de un inmigrante mexicano, Barajas dijo que su padre le enseñó que muchas personas pueden juzgarlo o estereotiparlo por ser latino. Ahora, dijo, la diversidad se está incrementando en Iowa.

“Este año, de los jardines de infantes (de las escuelas de Marshalltown)... siete de cada 10 niños son clasificados e identificados como minoría étnica”, dijo Barajas. “Cuando vi esto, me sorprendí”.

Soltero dijo que es importante que las comunidades en el estado sigan trabajando para dar la bienvenida a los nuevos habitantes de Iowa, ya sean latinoamericanos o de otras partes del mundo. Dijo que muchos inmigrantes eligen quedarse en sus nuevas comunidades a largo plazo, ayudándolas a crecer.

“Lo que Marshalltown ha hecho, y sé que también Des Moines... es algo positivo, adoptémoslo, y ellos participarán”, dijo Soltero, refiriéndose a la creciente población de refugiados del sudeste asiático en Marshalltown. “Las escuelas estaban listas; sabían qué hacer, sabían que necesitaban intérpretes... la ciudad estaba lista para un grupo diferente”.

Cuando se mudó a Marshalltown desde su ciudad natal, Los Ángeles, Hernández dijo que se sintió bienvenida mientras trabajaba en el sistema escolar.

“Pude ver a muchos de nuestros niños hispanos venir a Marshalltown, y puesto que venían de México, no sabían nada del idioma inglés”, dijo, agregando que la llegada de estos le abrió la oportunidad de convertirse en una líder entre el personal. “tuve la oportunidad de trabajar en la oficina y brindar asistencia a las familias que lo necesitaban”.

Si bien no se postuló para el consejo escolar porque es latina, Hernández dijo que se enorgullece de ser una madre compro-

metida y un modelo a seguir para los niños pequeños.

“Quiero ser alguien que vean y digan ‘yo podría ser esa persona algún día’”, dijo. “Eso me enorgullece, ser alguien a quien puedan admirar”.

Grey dijo que trabajó en comunidades en todo el estado antes de la “tremenda afluencia” de inmigrantes latinos en la década de 1990. Fue testigo de los cambios presentados.

“Esas comunidades que, desde el inicio, identificaron los desafíos, y con gente clave en puestos clave de liderazgo... esas comunidades, en términos generales, están muy, muy satisfechas de haber tomado esa ruta”, dijo.

“El liderazgo clave en algunas de esas comunidades optó por ver hacia otro lado”.

Marshalltown y Storm Lake, dijo Grey, desde el inicio trabajaron para enfrentar los desafíos que trajo la bienvenida a la población inmigrante. Agregó que

los inmigrantes latinoamericanos han estado aquí el tiempo suficiente como para ver crecer a sus hijos como ciudadanos de Iowa, y que estaba contento el jueves de ver a un panel de líderes latinos locales.

Otra actividad en que el evento se centró, fue en los desafíos de la construcción de comunidades acogedoras y las estrategias para el mejoramiento. La audiencia, compuesta de varias docenas, se dividió en grupos pequeños y anotaron sus ideas en grandes hojas de papel mientras hablaban.

Varias propuestas surgieron de la sesión de lluvia de ideas. Una idea común, a la que llegaron en muchos grupos, fue la de llevar a cabo eventos estilo potluck para establecer ayudas comunitarias respecto a los alimentos.

Algunos de los desafíos que identificaron los grupos incluyeron estereotipos y prejuicios inconscientes, desafíos con la comunicación y el lenguaje, la

formación de pandillas en las comunidades y divisiones generacionales, entre otros.

Las estrategias para el éxito incluían alentar el espíritu empresarial y las oportunidades de tutoría, aprovechar las diferencias, invitando directamente a las personas de diferentes antecedentes a participar en eventos y toma de decisiones de la ciudad, celebración de ferias culturales y más.

Soltero dijo que no vio la discusión sobre como cambiar Iowa; ella dijo que Iowa está cambiando y que lo importante es que las comunidades se mantengan al día.

“Queremos cambiar con Iowa, y eso significa que si Iowa cambia, vamos a cambiar con la comunidad”, dijo. “Comprender, y aceptar y aprender”.

Este premio se otorga a una persona no inmigrante que se dedica a crear impacto positivo en la comunidad de inmigrantes.

“Estamos emocionados de otorgarle al Embajador Branstad el premio de Campeón de Inmigrantes Karen Evans de este año”, dijo Sa. “Como ex orador principal y defensor de la Cumbre de Empresarios Inmigrantes, nos sentimos honrados de reconocer su dedicación y apoyo durante tanto tiempo”.

Celebrando el Día de los Muertos en Des Moines En 1519 el conquistador español Hernán Cortes invadió el país que ahora se conoce como México, trayendo con él la religión católica y el reino de Castilla durante la primera ola de colonización española de las Américas.

A lo largo del tiempo las creencias y tradiciones de los conquistadores españoles y los aztecas conquistados e indígenas chocaron eventualmente creando una fusión de culturas. Ambas culturas eran muy religiosas y con el progreso de la conversión al catolicismo muchos dioses de las religiones nativas politeístas empezaron a ser asociados con los Santos Católicos, festivales y celebraciones mezcladas con días festivos de cada cultura.

El Día de los Muertos es un ejemplo de esta mezcla de las culturas. Las fiestas católicas de rememoración – El Día de Todas las Almas y El Día de Todos los Santos se celebraban alrededor del día que la celebración tradicional de la Cosecha de los Indígenas y celebraciones honorando al dios y diosa de la muerte. La creencia en el más allá era compartida por ambas culturas y ha seguido. Hoy, el Día de los Muertos es un día festivo nacional en México y es celebrado en muchos países, también, su populari-

dad está creciendo en los Estados Unidos.

En Des Moines, el Centro de Arte combina todos los aspectos más bonitos de esta celebración Latina con lo educativo, organizando una celebración enorme cada año con la ayuda de un grupo de miembros de la comunidad, liderada por la familia Plasencia, cuya matriarca, Ila Plasencia, acaba de ser ingresada al Salón de Fama de Latinos en Iowa.

El Centro de Arte de Des Moines abrió sus puertas el sábado, 28 de Octubre a cientos de visitantes para disfrutar pan dulce con champurrado, un altar dedicado a músicos Latinos de Iowa quienes fueron los pioneros de música Latina en el estado, y por supuesto, Mariachi.

Familias Latinas y no-Latinas se reunieron por varias horas para escuchar sobre las raíces del altar y las ofrendas y para escuchar un concierto de Mariachi antes de tener la oportunidad de ver un documental sobre las familias musicales Latinas de Iowa.

El Centro de Arte de Des Moines esta disponible para visitas de martes a domingo, de 11am-4pm con los jueves abiertos hasta las 9pm. Entrada es gratis.

Celebrating the Day of the Dead in Des Moines holidays of remembrance – All Souls Day and All Saints Day fell around the same time as traditional Indian harvest celebrations and feasts honoring the god and goddess of death. The belief in afterlife was shared by both cultures, and endured. Today, Day of the Dead is a national holiday in Mexico, and is celebrated in many countries with growing popularity in the United States.

In Des Moines, the Art Center combines all the most beautiful aspects of this Latino celebration with education, organizing a huge celebration each year with the help of a group of community members, led by the Plasencia family, whose matriarch, Ila Plasencia, has just been inducted to the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame.

The Des Moines Art Center opened its doors on Saturday, October 28, to hundreds of visitors to enjoy sweet bread with champurrado, an altar dedicated to Latino musicians from Iowa who were the pioneers of Latin music in the state, and of course, a Mariachi.

Latino and non-Latino families met for several hours to hear about the roots of the altar and the offerings and to listen to a Mariachi concert before having the opportunity to watch a documentary about Iowa’s Latino musical families.

The Des Moines Art Center is open for visits from Tuesday to Sunday, from 11 am-4pm with Thursdays open until 9pm. Admission is free. For more information, visit desmoinesartcenter.org

In 1519, Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortes invaded what is now Mexico, bringing with him the Catholic religion and the rule of the King of Castille during the first wave of Spanish colonization in the Americas.

The beliefs and traditions of the colonizing Spanish and the conquered Aztecs and indigenous peoples collided and merged over time. Both cultures were deeply religious, and as religious conversion to Catholicism progressed, the many gods from the polytheistic native religions became associated with Catholic Saints, festivals and holidays blended with feast days from each culture.

The Day of the Dead is an example of this cultural blending. The Catholic

Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit 10 years of helping people reach the American Dream

Iowa’s Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit will celebrate their 10th anniversary on November 18. This year the IES will be bigger than ever with over 1,000 immigrant business owners from all over the Midwest expected to attend the summit in the FFA Enrichment Center DMACC Ankeny Campus.

The Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit is an annual event that brings businesses of diverse backgrounds together to share, learn, and celebrate the immigrant entrepreneurship experience and their contributions to the overall community.

Every aspect of the Summit, from success stories of immigrant entrepreneurs at the award ceremony, to sharing business expertise in the areas of law, international trade, accounting, marketing, and technology in the classrooms, is all designed to inspire new immigrant and non-immigrant entrepreneurs to make their “American Dream” a reality.

Ten years ago, three immigrant business owners started the Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit. This nonprofit organization

was created to educate immigrant business owners the basics of starting and operating a successful business in the United States.

Since its creation IES keeps on advocating for immigrant business owners and providing a venue for immigrant businesses owners to connect with the greater business communities in our state and country. IES provides opportunities to everyone through education and networking, but above all this organization believes in nurturing, love and gratitude.

Ying Sa, one of the founders and the current chair of the IES, is also an immigrant entrepreneur she is the founder and Principal Certified Public Accountant at Community CPA & Associates, Inc. A native of China and former resident of Canada, Ying served five years as Vice President of Controllers for Wells Fargo Financial Inc. in Des Moines, IA and six years as the Chief Financial Officer of the Iowa Manufacturing Extension Partnership at Iowa State University.

“I am an immigrant. I am most thankful to the people who have welcomed and supported me, my business, my family and my children,” Ying Sa said. “Together, we will

celebrate the unity, the sharing, and most importantly, the learning. It is our goal for every business owner to learn more, do more and to earn more. IES is for you and is for your fellow immigrant friends who are eager to be financially successful.”

Many in the Hispanic community dream of having their own business someday.

Unfortunately, lack of crucial information stops some of them from attempting to launch their business.

“Remarkably, growth in the number of Latino-owned firms in the United States is outpacing growth in number among other firms. This high business creation rate is unique in the U.S. because the five-year average growth rate in the number of Latino firms has remained at double or triple that of the national average for the past fifteen years. This growth presents a great opportunity to expand the U.S. economy.”

– State of Latino Entrepreneurship 2016 report by the Stanford Latino Entrepreneurship Initiative “Business is a learned skill. It’s not anybody’s smarter than any other, it’s knowing how to move through the system,” Sa explained. “Everyone can be an entrepreneur

– it doesn’t matter where you come from or what you’re doing today.”

That was the topic of focus during the Des Moines Register “Changing Iowa” panel discussion Thursday evening at the Midnight Ballroom, and the Register’s Iowa columnist Kyle Munson led the proceedings.

“For a lot of reasons, Marshalltown is a great place to talk about this,” Munson said.

Marshalltown is a highly diverse community compared to many others in Central Iowa, and the evening’s panel included local Latina/o leaders.

Marshalltown Regional Partnership CEO David Barajas, Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA Business Manager Wendy Soltero and Marshalltown School Board member and Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) Every Child Ready coordinator Karina Hernández were all featured.

Munson and Iowa Center for Immigrant Leadership and Integration Director and University of Northern Iowa anthropology professor Mark Grey rounded out the panel.

“The nice thing about having folks like Wendy and Karina, and many others … that are really getting involved is, it’s providing opportunities for us to also be able to serve as mentors for younger kids,” Barajas said of leaders with ethnic backgrounds in Marshalltown, adding it’s important that children from those backgrounds see adult role models in the community.

One major topic discussed Thursday concerned getting new Iowans involved in their new communities.

Growing up the grandson of a Mexican immigrant, Barajas said his father taught him that many people may judge or stereotype him for being a Latino. Now, he said diversity is growing in Iowa.

“This year, of our (Marshalltown Schools) kindergarten class … seven out of every 10 of those kindergart-

ners are classified and identified themselves as an ethnic minority,”Barajas said. “When I saw this, it amazed me.”

Soltero said it’s important that communities in the state continue to work to be welcoming to new Iowans, whether they are Latin American or from other parts of the world.

She said many immigrants choose to stay in their new communities for the long-term, helping them grow.

“What Marshalltown has done, and I know Des Moines too … we know it’s a positive thing, let’s embrace it, they’re going to come in,” Soltero said, speaking about the increasing Southeast Asian refugee population in Marshalltown. “The schools were ready; they knew what to do, they knew they needed interpreters … the town was ready for a different group.”

Upon moving to Marshalltown from her native Los Angeles, Hernández said she felt welcomed as she worked in the school system.

“I got to see a lot of our Hispanic kids coming in to Marshalltown, as they were coming in from Mexico, not knowing any English,” she said, adding the influx allowed her the opportunity to become a leader among the staff. “I was able to work in the office and provide that assistance to families that needed it.”

While she said she didn’t run for school board because she’s Latina, Hernández said she’s proud to be an involved parent and a role model for young children.

“I want to be the person they see and say ‘I could be that person one day,’” she said. “That makes me proud, that I can be that person that they can look up to.”

Grey said he was working in communities across the state before the “tremendous influx” of Latina/o immigrants in the 1990s. He witnessed the resulting changes unfold.

“Those communities that, early on, recognized the challenges, and you had key people in key leadership positions … those communities, by and

large, are very, very glad that they took that route,” he said. “Key leadership in some of those communities chose to look the other way.”

Marshalltown and Storm Lake, Grey said, worked to meet the challenges brought by welcoming an immigrant population early on. He added that Latin American immigrants have been around long enough to see their children grow up as Iowans, and that he was happy to see a panel of local Latina/o leaders Thursday.

Another activity at the event centered around the challenges in building welcoming communities, and strategies for improvement. The audience of several dozen broke into small groups and wrote their ideas on large sheets of paper as they talked.

Several ideas came out of the brainstorming session. One common idea, arrived at in many different groups, was to hold potluck-style events to help different parts of the community bond over food.

Some challenges identified by the group included stereotyping and unconscious bias, challenges with communication and language, the formation of cliques within communities and generational divides, among others.

Strategies for success included encouraging entrepreneurship and mentoring opportunities, embracing differences, explicitly inviting people from different backgrounds to participate in city events and decisions, holding cultural fair events and more.

Soltero said she didn’t see the discussion about changing Iowa; she said Iowa is changing, and it’s important for communities to keep up.

“We want to change with Iowa, and that means if Iowa’s changing, we want to change with the community,” she said. “Understand, and accept and learn.”

Shark Tank Contestant Headlines Iowa Event Robbie Cabral, founder, CEO, and creator of BenjiLock will attend as a keynote speaker at the 2017 Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit (IES) in central Iowa next month. Robbie, who appeared on Shark Tank Sunday (October 15) struck a deal with Kevin O’Leary for $200,000 for 15% of his company.

He will be in Iowa for the prestigious Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit on November 18th, 2017.

“As an immigrant, Robbie wanted to chase the ‘American dream,’” said IES Chair Ying Sa. “He is successfully living his dream, just like so many of the hard working, passionate, immigrant entrepreneurs here in Iowa. We are proud to have Robbie share his inspiring story at the Summit.”

This is the 10th annual Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit. A conference will be held for entrepreneurs throughout the day with access to over 23 different workshops, feature an awards assembly over the lunch hour and end with a 10 year celebration. A number of immigrant entrepreneurs and their businesses will be recognized for their success.

Additionally, former Iowa Governor, and current U.S. Ambassador to China, Terry Branstad will receive the Karen Evans Immigrant Champion Award.

The award is given to a non-immigrant who is dedicated to making a positive impact on the immigrant community.
