Sea-Tac Airport Sustainability Display L O C AT I O N :

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

SERVICES:

SUSTAINABILITY DISPLAY

The design for the LEED signage at Sea-Tac Airport focuses on the importance of sustainability for the Port of Seattle and actions the Port has taken to improve sustainability. Information is located at levels for both children and adults and audiences can skim the information or delve deeper.

The linear timeline implies movement and each individual element is part of the larger story of the Port’s sustainability ideology. While the piece is minimal and simple, shifts in scale for the iconography and type provide interest. The Port of Seattle brand is references through color and font selection and materials were chosen to compliment the new terminal architecture.

SLCIA Passenger Terminal L O C AT I O N :

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

SIGNAGE & WAYFINDING

HOK is working with Salt Lake City to create an entirely new airport in Utah’s capital. The project is one of the nation’s largest aviation developments in years and will be the first completely new airport built in the U.S. in the 21st century.

The holistic signage program is integrated with the new terminal’s roadway approach, transit program, exterior architecture, interior space, advertising strategy and art program. The design for each type of wayfinding signage includes a definition of type styles, colors, size and materials. Design considerations included the project budget, maintenance, lighting, ability to easily accommodate future upgrades and cost effectiveness over time.

Little Village Corridor Study L O C AT I O N :

As Little Village continues to represent the largest center of Mexican commerce and culture in Chicago, each day presents an opportunity to cultivate the 26th Street corridor’s own visual perception. How does Little Village want to be seen by its residents and visitors?

How does Little Village want to visually honor and showcase its historic Mexican culture?

By combining elements of brand, landscape and art, EXD helped to devise a strategic visual language and system of parts that form interactive experiences. This purposeful systems approach is capable of generating an open-ended set of variables rather than one fixed solution. Input gathered directly from community stakeholders will influence execution of the visual language that will serve as a unifying identity.

18Broadway L O C AT I O N :

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

IDENTITY DESIGN, EDUCATIONAL DISPLAYS

18Broadway transform a vacant urban lot into an opportunity to harvest stormwater, up to 89,000 gallons at a time, and teach about sustainability practices.

Tended by volunteers, the site has produced an average of more than 3 tons of produce annually, which is all donated to a local food bank. Often visited and toured by state, municipal and community parties, the project serves as a model for public-private partnerships in sustainable developments.

EXD worked directly with the landscape designers and copywriters to develop bold and approachable graphics. The information focuses on food production, housing and energy conservation. A family of colors, icons and diagrams showcase facts about the site and how it contributes to sustainability, solar power and wind energy. Salvaged materials, like existing chain-link fences, were utilized in the signage and graphics. The site has become a unique space to learn and inspire environmental action in the city’s urban core.

18th&Vine District in Kansas City L O C AT I O N :

18th&Vine is a historic district in Kansas City that is undergoing re-development and investment. It is known

The design elements are a reflection of the historical past and a nod to the bright future of a community...We encourage our entire community to embrace the new brand... it belongs to all of Kansas City.”

for its Jazz roots and as a hub of African-American businesses. The city-led improvements will expand live, work, play and entertainment options in the area.

Phase 1 of the re-development included a new logo and identity for the community to rally behind. Through input gathered directly from stakeholders and community members, the branding serves as a unifying symbol.

TD Ameritrade Headquarters L O C AT I O N :

OMAHA, NEBRASKA

TD Ameritrade’s 11-story headquarters consolidates more than 2000 corporate, technology and operations employees into one of the country’s largest LEED platinum buildings. A branded workplace environment was created to reflect the business and culture of TD Ameritrade and its financial story and history.

The building’s ecology achievements are celebrated with a Growing Green display system. Throughout the building, sustainability information is presented on colorful cubes that relate back to a larger story.

Together, the graphics contribute to a high-energy, layered experience that grows in meaning over time and boosts visitor and employee engagement with the brand.

Cargill Protein Headquarters L O C AT I O N :

WICHITA, KANSAS

Cargill Protein’s new headquarters celebrates the why behind Cargill’s mission. The theme “families feeding families” ties visitors to the protein process and the farmers, ranchers, chefs, scientists and engineers working together to nourish the world.

EXD helped to develop a tour path through the space with a corresponding story that would be told. Content is sourced locally and reference the landscape, animals, textures and details that are found in the supply chain.

A 800+ ceramic plate art installation symbolizes where their product meets the consumer — on the plate. In all, the experiential graphics create a holistic picture and authentic expression that is uniquely Cargill Protein.

Student Services Building UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS DALLAS

L O C AT I O N :

RICHARDSON, TEXAS

Sustainability displays at UT Dallas’s Student Services Building educates visitors on the first LEED platinum building on campus. It offers an overview of sustainability efforts by the university, both in general and specific to the building.

Located in a high traffic common area, the information is presented in small, easily read blocks of content. This encourages fast and effective communication to multiple viewers of any level of interest and interaction. Imagery and performance statistics are also easily updatable as new metrics become available. The design takes cues from the interior design and the UTD brand.

Halas Hall THE CHICAGO BEARS

Halas Hall, which serves as the Chicago Bears’ headquarters and training facility, is all about winning games. From the way the team trains, recovers and educates players, each step of the journey connects them to the Bears legacy and the goal of every season: the Superbowl trophy.

At the players’ entrance, retired numbers are incorporated with motion sensors, light, sound and video to invigorate players as they enter. A large-scale installation commemorates 100 years of Bears football with suspended acrylic rods that represent different seasons—regular, post or Superbowl. And EXD worked closely with the team’s archivists to carefully display and reinterpret historic memorabilia.

The dramatic improvements to Halas Hall exemplify the commitment of the Bears organization in investing in the success of their football operations and the health and wellbeing of their players and staff.

USF Health Morsani College of Medicine L O C AT I O N :

TAMPA, FLORIDA

The Morsani College of Medicine Taneja College of Pharmacy and Heart Institute (MDD) offers the medical school an opportunity to define a new relationship with the Tampa community. The building creates a signature image for the University and College, and enhances outreach and communications with a diverse visitors and population. Strong public health presence and outreach programs are provided through the new facility.

Faces of Philanthropy offers a glimpse into the history of how donors have influenced MD Anderson’s evolution into one of the world’s largest and most respected centers devoted to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. It tells the story of philanthropic giving and its aim to eradicate cancer. The exhibit also recognizes those who make differences in the lives of others through gifts of time, knowledge and spirit.
