In achievement and prestige, the University of Wisconsin–Madison has long been recognized as one of America’s great universities. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is one of the preeminent research universities in the world. They achieved that distinction by continually pushing the frontiers of research, scholarship and creative work.

Some of the most exciting and important advances are at the borders and connections among disciplines and require multidisciplinary collaborations and the integration of concepts from many different areas. While it is important to maintain and build on strengths in core disciplines, they also must facilitate cross-disciplinary work if we are to remain at the forefront of research, scholarship and creative activities. The initiative also will enhance cross-disciplinary student learning and benefit our state’s economy. Between 2005-2012 the State committed over $500 Million in new multi-disciplinary research facilities.

WISCONSIN INSTITUTES FOR DISCOVERY

The Discovery Building, completed in December 2010, houses the public Wisconsin Institute for Discovery and the private Morgridge Institute for Research in a single, fourstory facility constructed on the entire 1300 block of University Avenue (bordered by Campus Drive, North Randall Avenue and North Orchard Street) on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus. The building serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research – spanning biotechnology, nanotechnology and information technologies – that will lead to the development of new biomedical treatments and technological applications aimed at improving human health and welfare. It contains approximately 106,000 assignable square feet of research space, including wet and dry laboratories, research support areas, core facilities and offices. As a gateway to campus for the public, the building also is home to teaching labs, designed as “dream” collaborative learning environments. The labs host a wide range of education programs for K-12 and college students, science teachers and the public. The main floor of the facility was built as a Town Center to welcome all with food, interactive displays, ongoing activities, hands-on learning labs, events and meeting spaces. It includes public gathering spaces and restaurants designed to revitalize the streets around the facility and enrich the campus environment.

WISCONSIN ENERGY INSTITUTE

“We needed a building that was functional, flexible and that sparked the ‘random collisions’ between scientists from different disciplines that can catalyze the breakthrough advances that are our goal. The facility also needed to respect the research being done there by applying state-ofthe-art strategies to conserve energy use and optimize the use of renewable resources. HOK and its team understood those necessities and delivered a winning solution.”

HOK, in association with Potter Lawson, designed the new Energy Institute to help the University of Wisconsin meet the global challenge of finding alternative energy sources and creating renewable energy through development of sustainable technologies, such as the conversion of plant biomass into cellulosic ethanol. This first of its kind, world-class facility for alternative and bio-energy research, provides a platform for creating economically viable and environmentally sustainable alternative energy resources. Prominently located on the edge of campus, the building provides great opportunities for networking and collaboration with government and industry leaders; while an education and public outreach suite, including biofuel demonstration gardens, helps bring energy issues to the public. An embodiment of the sustainable focus of the institute, the Energy Institute proudly

displays and incorporates sustainability into the building: from the field of prairie grass outside the front door, to the entry lobby video screen displaying building efficiency to visitors, to the highly energy efficient, low velocity fume hoods on the lab floors. The project achieved LEED Gold Certification.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

The UW-Madison College of Engineering consists of eight degree-granting departments— biomedical engineering, chemical and biological engineering, civil and environmental engineering, electrical and computer engineering, engineering physics, industrial and systems engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineering. Its ninth department, engineering professional development, is one of the nation's oldest and largest continuing education programs for professional engineers. The college is home to 44 research centers and 21 research consortia, which collaborate directly with industry and government to identify and solve key engineering challenges. The College of Engineering Centre Building was first constructed in 1931, built around an existing machine shop that had been built 10 years prior. Major remodelling and a new electrical and data infrastructure enabled the existing ME building to support modern research labs and classrooms.

SHERMAN FAIRCHILD BUILDING

In June 2009, Harvard University began the design of an ambitious two-year renovation of the existing Sherman Fairchild building at 7 Divinity Avenue in Cambridge to accommodate Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology (SCRB) research. The primary purpose of the project was to provide exemplary workplaces for both research and academic staff in a healthy and productive environment, while achieving robust sustainability goals at a competitive capital cost. This project reflects Harvard’s commitment to sustainability and to building healthy and productive workplaces that support the University’s academics and research mission while reducing the impact on the environment. In 2009, Payette was retained to plan, program and design the comprehensive renovation of a 100,000 SF research building constructed in 1978. Following an assessment of the existing envelope, mechanical and electrical systems, it was decided to renew both the programmatic space and the infrastructure needed to support new programs. We focused on strategies which placed these spaces adjacent to the exterior envelope where they could benefit from natural light and views outside. This discovery, among others, led to the development of a radically different laboratory floor organization than what had existed previously. It was also highly prototypical for this science.

INTEGRATED SCIENCES COMPLEX

Classes start in spring 2015 in the Integrated Sciences Complex (ISC), the first new academic building on campus in nearly 40 years. The new building will advance student and faculty access, engagement, and success with state-of-the art research, teaching, and training laboratories. It will promote collaboration among students, faculty, staff, and visitors while opening doors to strategic and community partnerships and funding opportunities. The ISC will also be the first green building on campus to earn a U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification.

Opened in 2006, the Leslie L. Dan Pharmacy Building is a state-of-the-art 167,000 square foot teaching and research facility and the gateway to the University of Toronto. Equipped with over 40,000 square feet of research space and numerous lecture halls, classrooms and teaching laboratories, the building supports the academic, research and teaching needs of well over 1,300 people on a daily basis.

CENTRE FOR COMPUTING AND ENGINEERING

The new Centre for Computing and Engineering located on the urban campus of Ryerson University in the heart of downtown Toronto features a sculptural treatment of the Church Street facade that dramatically changes throughout the day as the sun and ambient light varies. This project includes tenancy for the Computer Sciences Department with hardware and software labs, lecture halls, faculty offices and engineering labs for aeronautics and structural groups.
