California DGS 10th & O Street L O C AT I O N :

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA

The 10th & O Street Office Building will become a temporary home for legislative and executive officials for the duration of the Capitol Annex renovation. It will serve as an inspirational symbol of democracy, sustainability and efficiency.

The ideas of nature, sustainability and harmony informed the wayfinding design. The highly legible system meant that the designers could use normal sized signs for areas with longer sight lines, like at the communicating stair or long corridors.

The designers found a creative way to integrate signage in the two-story totem that connects the first and second levels. The sign family is modular, sophisticated, logical and accessible. If after 5 years, the building becomes a Class-A office building, the system will easily adapt for future use.

Johnson County Courthouse L O C AT I O N :

OLATHE, KANSAS

The new Johnson County Courthouse, now Olathe’s tallest building and newest landmark, creates a modern civic campus that consolidates the court’s facilities into a single building. The welcoming, state-of-theart 350,000 sq. ft. building has 28 courtrooms over 7 floors and features prominent skylights, dramatic punctuations and public art.

The signage is a modern aesthetic that reflects the architectural design. Work included an assessment of the pedestrian and vehicular pathways and destinations, amenities, entrance messages and directory, and other code and regulatory signage to manage the varied levels of access and security throughout. The prominent exterior monument design is now being adopted as a standard for future projects.

Wayne County Justice Center L O C AT I O N :

DETROIT, MICHIGAN

The design for this justice center communicates a unified vision about its important civic role. The complex includes a criminal courthouse, detention facility, juvenile detention facility and administrative offices on a site that previously housed a shuttered automotive plant.

The design team conducted Audience Scripts to better understand a visitor’s experience of the facility. The study identified the user groups and key touchpoints, and mapped their journey to ensure seamless and intuitive wayfinding.

The use of common interior, exterior and site materials along with understated design gestures and daylightfilled spaces creates a cohesive campus environment.

Oswego Police Station L O C AT I O N :

OSWEGO, ILLINOIS

The new station for the Oswego police department is centrally located adjacent to the current Fire Headquarters where it completes a public safety campus for the Village. The design embraces the concept of community policing by inviting community members into the facility via a transparent and open lobby and providing a flexible-use community/training room located prominently at the front entry.

Community engagement was critical to the success.

Local stakeholder groups were engaged during every phase so that the facility can best serve the community. Sustainability was also a goal for the Village and a tower feature that identifies the building also incorporates solar hot water heating arrays directly onto the facade design.

Stanislaus County Public Safety Campus L O C AT I O N :

MODESTO, CALIFORNIA

The Stanislaus County Public Safety Center is a designbuild project that encompasses five new buildings and adds over 500 beds to the County’s facility. Additional spaces include a medical/mental health housing unit, a health services unit, a security administration center and an intake, release and transportation center.

The public safety center expansion project was the largest capital project ever launched by the Stanislaus County government. The facility increases the county jail’s housing capacity and provides the ability to launch new programs aimed at decreasing recidivism rates.

Kent County Courthouse L O C AT I O N :

WARWICK, RHODE ISLAND

The courthouse for Kent County, Rhode Island, replaces outmoded facilities in the city of Warwick, just south of Providence. The new 200,000 square foot Judicial Center includes 16 courts and office support space for the District, Family and Superior Courts; each division of the courts has a dedicated floor.

EXD’s full signage program includes vehicular and pedestrian monuments, information signs, building dedication, state seals, bench name plaques and room identification signs.

Kowloon East Regional Police Headquarters L O C AT I O N :

HONG KONG, CHINA

Built on the site of the former airport police base, the Kowloon East Regional Police Headquarters will serve as a modern command center for police in fast-growing Kowloon East. Over 20 floors on a tightly constrained site, it includes a public reporting room, offices, dining facilities, night duty accommodations and a shooting range. The lower levels house car parking for hundreds of police vehicles.

The external appearance of the tower projects an image of robustness and longevity, in line with the history of the Hong Kong Police Force. The form and materiality of the wayfinding elements visually communicate order, and their messages are easy to engage with because of their clarity and simplicity. Fonts are familiar and easy to read. The coloration is neutral. And their locations are anticipatory of the clients’ needs for direction.
