Campus Life Hofstra Law is on the 240-acre Hofstra University campus in Hempstead, New York. The University, which is an officially recognized arboretum, is in the heart of Long Island’s thriving business community. Hofstra Law students have access to stateof-the-art gym facilities and a pool, libraries, sporting events, concerts, theatrical performances, festivals and lectures on campus.

On-Campus Housing The Graduate Residence Hall is Hofstra University’s newest residence facility. The five-story building offers suite-style apartment living and is just a short walk to the Law School. The Graduate Residence Hall has single and double bedrooms within two-, three- and four-bedroom suites.

Colonial Square residence hall also offers suite-style living for law and graduate students in Plymouth House. Approximately 25 students per house live together in either “super” single rooms or in double bedrooms, with a common lounge area per suite and a private bathroom. A kitchen area is available on the main floor of each house for students who wish to cook in their residence hall.

New York City Hofstra Law is a mere 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of New York City, which allows students to enjoy the benefits of its internationally recognized legal, business and cultural centers.

ACCOMPLISHED FACULTY Our faculty consists of nationally and internationally recognized scholars.

Faculty members have clerked for U.S. Supreme Court justices, chaired major American Bar Association and law reform committees, received awards for scholarship and leadership in legal education as well as community leadership, and been politically active in their communities. Their publications reflect a wide range of interests and expertise, ongoing participation in important scholarly debates of the day, and significant contributions to the study and teaching of law.

J. SCOTT COLESANTI Professor of Legal Writing Professor Colesanti served as trial counsel for the New York Stock Exchange Division of Enforcement for 10 years and subsequently served within the NYSE Office of the General Counsel and as a securities industry arbitrator for over a decade. He has handled appeals before the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Social Security Administration, the EEOC, and the New York State Division of Human Rights. He regularly lectures on the Financial Crisis RONALD COLOMBO Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Distance Education A former vice president and counsel in Morgan Stanley’s Complex Global Litigation Group, Professor Colombo focuses his teaching and research on securities fraud, corporate law, corporate rights and responsibilities, and financial regulation. His book The First Amendment and the Business Corporation examines tough constitutional issues, such as corporate free speech rights in the U.S. Supreme Court Citizens United decision, as well as corporate rights to free exercise, which the Court considered in Hobby Lobby.

HERBIE J. DIFONZO Professor of Law Professor DiFonzo has been a federal prosecutor and a litigator in the areas of family law, criminal defense, negligence and professional malpractice. He teaches

courses in family law, civil procedure, and alternatives to litigation, and writes primarily on issues in family law and criminal justice. He has served as a coreporter for the Shared Parenting Project, sponsored by the Association of Families and Conciliation Courts, and the Family Law Education Reform (FLER) Project, a national effort to improve family law teaching.

JANET L. DOLGIN Jack and Freda Dicker Distinguished Professor of Health Care Law; Director of the Gitenstein Institute for Health Law and Policy; Co-Director of the Hofstra University Bioethics Center Professor Dolgin is an expert in health law and bioethics. She co-organized the Hofstra University Bioethics Center’s inaugural conference on the ethical use of Internet-cloud-based apps and social media in health care.

AKILAH N. FOLAMI Professor of Law Professor Folami’s research includes both the intersection of communications law and media policy and the regulation of speech and cultural expression, particularly hip-hop culture, on broadcast radio.

IRINA D. MANTA Professor of Law Professor Manta teaches intellectual property and property law subjects, and her research examines the intersection between

intellectual property law and social sciences, with a focus on psychology. She received the University’s Lawrence A. Stessin Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Publication for 20132014 for her article “Hedonic Trademarks.”

RICHARD K. NEUMANN, JR. Professor of Law Professor Neumann, a leading authority on legal education and the teaching of legal writing, has been recognized by the Association of Legal Writing Directors and the Legal Writing Institute for his “outstanding contribution and leadership to the field of legal writing.”

BARBARA STARK Professor of Law Professor Stark teaches courses in international family law, international law, and transnational law. She has served on the executive council of the American Society of International Law and the executive committees of the AALS Sections on International Law and on Family and Juvenile Law, and has chaired the Family Law Committee of the International Law Association.

VERN WALKER Professor of Law and Director of the Research Laboratory for Law, Logic and Technology Professor Walker has been a consultant to private and governmental institutions in both

the U.S. and Europe. As director of Hofstra Law’s Law, Logic and Technology Research Laboratory, he and his team of researchers — in collaboration with peers at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa — are using advanced software and Internet-based technologies to explore logical analysis of the underlying patterns of reasoning in legal decisions.

LAURIS WREN Clinical Professor of Law Professor Wren created the Asylum Clinic, which represents people who have fled their countries because of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. She has been honored by the Central American Refugee Center for her “deep commitment and dedicated work on behalf of immigrants and refugees.”

ELLEN YAROSHEFSKY Howard Lichtenstein Distinguished Professor of Legal Ethics and Director of the Monroe H. Freedman Institute for the Study of Legal Ethics Professor Yaroshefsky is a nationally recognized scholar in ethics, criminal law and civil rights. She represents lawyers and law firms in criminal, civil and disciplinary matters and serves as an expert witness on legal ethics issues. She has received several awards for her litigation work.

Take Specialized Courses Hofstra Law offers more than 200 courses in a wide variety of practice areas giving you the opportunity to delve deeper into your areas of interest. Classes range in size from large lectures to small discussion-based seminars, giving you a chance to select classes that also match your learning style. Additionally, you will take classes and exchange ideas alongside our J.D. candidates, creating a dynamic classroom atmosphere.

Develop Expertise If you have a passion to dig deeper into a particular area of law or legal issue, you may be eligible to participate in an independent study alongside one of our renowned faculty members. You will work one-on-one with the faculty member to develop an original work of publishable quality that will showcase your developed expertise in a legal subject.

Prepare for the Bar Exam If completing an LL.M. is a necessary step toward reaching your goal of becoming a licensed attorney, you also have the opportunity to take courses focused on the subjects tested on the bar examination. YOUR FACULTY ADVISORS Julian Ku Professor Ku teaches courses in international, constitutional and corporate law. His main research interest is the intersection of international and domestic law. He has recently published articles on the constitutional aspects of foreign relations in the Yale Law Journal, the Supreme Court Review and Constitutional Commentary, and the book Taming Globalization: International Law, the U.S. Constitution, and the New World Order (with John Yoo). He also is a co-founder of the renowned international law blog Opinio Juris. Professor Ku was awarded a grant to serve as a Fulbright Distinguished Lecturer in Law at the East China University of Political Science and Law during the spring 2011 semester. Before joining the Hofstra Law faculty in 2002, he clerked for Judge Jerry Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and was an Olin Fellow and Lecturer in Law at the University of Virginia Law School. He also practiced as an associate at the New York law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton, specializing in litigation and arbitration arising out of international disputes.

Juli Campagna Professor Campagna has worked internationally for 30 years. Before attending law school, she was a translator and taught English as a Second/Foreign Language in business and academic settings around the world. Her legal practice focused on crossborder transactions. She has taught in law schools, law firms and judicial training centers in Europe, Asia and Latin America. She is a former chair of the International and Foreign Law Committee of the Chicago Bar Association and vice chair of the American Bar Association’s Mexico Committee. She speaks and presents widely on topics related to teaching lawyers from civil law jurisdictions. The Class of 2013 selected her to receive the Teacher of the Year award.

THE OFFICE OF GLOBAL INITIATIVES The Office of Global Initiatives was created to nurture and cultivate globalization as an institutional value and educational priority at Hofstra Law. The office oversees all international programs at Hofstra Law, including study abroad, student exchange and the LL.M. program in American Legal Studies.

The office is responsible for establishing international centers abroad, new models for faculty and student exchange relationships, and affiliations with international organizations; developing international rule of law programs; and cultivating international internship opportunities.

Application Review Process

New York Bar Examination

The Admissions Committee takes an integrated approach when reviewing applications. The committee considers the rigor of each candidate’s undergraduate education, law school credentials, demonstrated commitment to public service, work and leadership experience, and any other pertinent information.

Students seeking to take the New York State bar examination must also complete a 2-credit course in professional responsibility and at least 6 credits of coursework in subjects tested on the Multistate Bar Examination.

International applicants to the LL.M. program in American Legal Studies are required to submit either a paper-based or Internetbased TOEFL score or IELTS score.

Foreign-educated applicants must also send their official law school transcripts with certified English translations.

Certified translation services may be arranged through World Educational Services, the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, or the LSAC LL.M. Credential Assembly Service (llm.lsac.org).

Degree Requirements The LL.M. program in American Legal Studies requires completion of 24 credits, which may be taken full time in one academic year or part time in two academic years. Full-time students must finish their LL.M. degree in two semesters and take 12 to 15 credits each semester.

Part-time students must finish their LL.M. degree in four semesters at most, taking two to three courses each semester.

To give our LL.M. candidates a foundation in American law, you are required to take a 2-credit course on the U.S. legal system and a graded Legal Writing and Research course. The goal of this course is to familiarize you with the structure of U.S. legal documents and teach you how to communicate effectively in the professional language used by American lawyers.

While graduating from our LL.M. program in American Legal Studies will satisfy the “cure” requirement under NYCRR 520.6, candidates must still complete an “Advance Evaluation of Eligibility” in order to guarantee the ability to sit for the bar exam. Financial Aid Students enrolling at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law who are neither U.S. citizens nor permanent residents, and who are therefore ineligible for federal aid programs, are expected to cover the cost of their legal education on their own. Private loans may be available for international students from some lenders, although they usually require U.S. co-signers. All international students who hold U.S. citizenship or a green card are fully eligible to receive federal financial aid.

Scholarship Opportunities Each year Hofstra Law offers a number of partial merit scholarships of varying amounts to highly accomplished international LL.M. students. Additionally, Hofstra Law’s Office of Financial Aid has an extensive list of external scholarship programs that students can review when considering how best to fund their LL.M. program.

LL.M. candidates must achieve a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.2 out of a possible 4.0 to receive the LL.M. degree.
