Global Exchange Programs for Undergraduate Students As business becomes increasingly more global, an international experience is an essential component of undergraduate business education. Studying abroad – for either a summer or semester – enables students to: • • • • •

This handbook outlines the international experiences currently available for undergraduate students in the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. It contains valuable, practical information on planning your study abroad, from choosing a program to selection of courses and living accommodations.

All students are required to complete the Zarb Study Abroad Application which is available on the Zarb website. Courses taught in English at each university and their Hofstra equivalent will be available soon on the Zarb website.

Description of School: Founded in 1902, Beijing Normal University (BNU) is under the administration of the Ministry of Education. It is a renowned institution of higher education known for strong emphasis on humanities, science, technological innovations and education. BNU has approximately 22,000 fulltime students including 1,800 international students from over 94 countries.

Location: BNU is located in Beijing, the capital of China and one of the most populous cities in the world. The city’s history dates back three millennia as the last of the four great ancient capitals of China.

Beijing has been the political center of the country for much of the past eight centuries and is renowned for its astonishing monuments and building structures. Although Beijing has deep roots in the past, the city is enjoying urban developments that blends China’s past with modern innovations.

Academic Requirements: Students must have completed one full-time semester at Hofstra.

Credit System: Generally, courses are three credits. Students are permitted to take 12 credits (four courses) per semester.

Housing: Accommodations are available at the residence building for international students. (Charges range from RMB 60-96 per day.) Students can also find off-campus apartments or arrange home stays.

BNU also offers free airport pick up at Beijing Capital Airport. Chinese language courses (from beginner level to advanced level) are offered to international students.

Visa and Insurance Requirements: All students are responsible for obtaining the necessary visa. For more information, students should visit the U.S. Department of State webpage (www.state.gov) which contains links to each individual country’s embassy. United States residents must obtain a visa to enter China (either X1 or X2). An X1 visa is for students staying in China for more than six months; the X2 visa is for students staying in China less than six months. As required by the Ministry of Education in China, international students must possess health insurance that provides RMB 400,000 (approximately $65,000) of coverage. Students holding X1 visas must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entry.

Description of School: In 2013, Kedge Business School was created from the merger of BEM-Bordeaux Management School and Marseille-based Euromed Management, two leading French business schools with triple EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB accreditations. Kedge ranked third of France’s postbaccalaureate schools with four-year programs and is committed to creating new modes of teaching and personal development, and promoting responsible management practices.

Location: The Kedge Business School is located in Provence in the port city of Marseille, the oldest and second largest city in France after Paris. The city boasts the largest European suburban park, over 36 miles of coast line along the Mediterranean Sea and 300 days of sunshine per year. Marseille is rich in culture and history and was named the European Cultural Capital for 2013.

Summer programs are open to all Zarb students.

Credit System: Each course at Kedge meets for 30 hours per semester for five ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), the equivalent of a three-credit course at Hofstra.

Housing: Kedge on-campus housing is reserved for international students on a first come, first served basis. The Office of International Partnerships will also help students find off-campus housing.

Peer Support and Integration Activities: InterAct, a student-run group, organizes events for international students throughout the year. InterAct students will also meet new students at the train station. Kedge also provides a comprehensive orientation program which includes social and cultural programs.

All students must be covered by a health insurance plan. Non-European students staying in France for more than three months are required to purchase a French student health plan. All students are also required to obtain housing insurance.

Description of School: The Groupe Sup de Co Montpellier Business School, a Grande École, is heir to a long tradition of teaching based on the needs of businesses and markets. Founded in 1897 by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Montpellier, the school has succeeded in continually refining its specialized instruction in the management sciences to adapt its programs to changes in local and global economic environments. With triple accreditation from AACSB, AMBA and EFMD-EPAS, more than 300 international students come to the business school each year. The Financial Times ranked Montpellier 36th in their listing of Best International Masters programs.

Location: Located along the shores of the Mediterranean in the south of France, Montpellier is a city with a rich past, a vibrant cultural life and a youthful feel. Less than 200 miles from Barcelona and 315 miles from Milan, Montpellier enjoys a superb climate with 300 days of sunshine per year. A popular city for students from France and around the world, the city has nearly 70,000 students – one in four residents is a student – and was the only French city to appear among the 45 “Places To Go In 2012.” Additionally, Montpellier is a city rich in culture with 55 entertainment venues, 26 museums and art galleries, 49 libraries, over a dozen festivals and major international expositions.

Housing: The Montpellier Business School has established a service dedicated to guiding students in their housing search. In addition to housing offered in private student residences and by CROUS (the regional student services agency), the welcoming and housing search assistance service gathers offcampus housing offers posted on the “Immoschool” website (www.immo-school.com), an online housing portal for students.

Credit System: Each course at Montpellier meets for 30 hours per semester for five ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), the equivalent of a three-credit course at Hofstra.

Peer Support and Integration: World Connexion is an organization that helps international students settle into life at Montpellier Business School by organizing special events to encourage socialization with local students and discovering France. Upon request, Montpellier students will arrange for transportation from the airport or train stations to housing accommodations. Information sessions at the beginning of the semester provide information on teaching and assessment methods, and student life. The International Students Office will provide assistance with administrative procedures.

Description of School: Hochschule Bremen, the largest university of applied sciences in the smallest German federal state, is rich in tradition. Established in 1799, Bremen is committed to innovation and internationalization. Today, the University embodies excellence in applied and practice-oriented teaching and research. The Bremen University of Applied Science’s approximately 8,000 students can choose from 70 international degrees offered by five faculties. The School of International Business (SiB) is the largest faculty at Bremen and strongly believes in the value of internationalizing business education by sending students abroad and by hosting international students.

Location: Bremen, Germany's oldest coastal city, is second only to Hamburg among German ports.

Known as the “ancient town by the gray river," Bremen is one of Germany’s major trade and industrial centers and earned the “City of Science 2005” distinction. Bremen is a truly green city with many magnificent parks, gardens and open spaces. The Rhododendron Park has more than 680 rhododendron varieties and 1,000 other varieties of plants. The city is a paradise for cyclists: Everyone is a cyclist from students to executives. Museums, art exhibitions, theatres, football, festivals, concerts, opera and ballet provide Bremen with an abundance of cultural events.

Credit System: Each course meets for 60 hours during the semester for 6 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), the equivalent of a three-credit course at Hofstra.

Housing: The International Office will assist exchange students from partner universities to find housing either in dormitories (limited capacity) or with families, and also search for accommodations in shared apartments. The “Adopt-a-Student” program links exchange students with families in Bremen for leisure and cultural activities. In addition, throughout the semester, the International Office organizes numerous activities including a welcome party, sightseeing tour of Bremen, trips to Berlin and other destinations and various social events. Bremen also offers a free, one-week intensive German course before the start of each semester.

Students not from a European Union member state require a special residency permit for academic purposes. Students may be exempt from mandatory health coverage if they provide proof of health insurance coverage in their home country which is valid in Germany and provides unlimited coverage for outpatient and hospital treatment. The University strongly recommends that students purchase a public students insurance plan which costs approximately EURO 80 per month.

Description of School: Located in the center of Seoul, Korea University Business School (KUBS) aims to educate students and practitioners to become creative global business leaders who demonstrate social responsibility and create sustainable value. Ranked first in Korea and seventh in Asia, KUBS is also the first business school in Korea accredited both by AACSB and EQUIS. Its MBA received top evaluation for five consecutive years by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation of Korea. Korea Business School has 87 full-time faculty members, the largest in Korea, and boasts state-of-the-art academic facilities. KUBS hosts 400 international students from around the world annually. The school has more than 37,000 alumni with the largest number of CEOs and CPAs in Korea among their graduates including Myung-bak Lee, 17th President of the Republic of Korea.

Location: Seoul is a city rich in history and tradition. The city was founded in 1392 when it became the capital of the Choson Dynasty. It is now the capital city of South Korea and traces of the former dynasty are still very much a part of the city's landscape. With exciting modern architecture and a cosmopolitan community, Seoul is the political, cultural, commercial, financial, educational and recreational center of South Korea. It is home to major corporations, banks, government offices, leading schools and universities, theaters and entertainment facilities. Seoul also offers a rich variety of tourist attractions and events.

Credit System: The credit system is the same as at Hofstra. Almost all courses are three credits. For undergraduates, 12-19 credits per semester are required.

Housing: On- and off-campus housing is available. CJ International House is an on-campus residence hall exclusively for exchange students. Off-campus housing is also available in the area surrounding the university. For more information on housing, visit http://reslife.korea.ac.kr/v1/.

Peer Support and Integration Activities: A university-wide, mandatory, three-day exchange student orientation is held immediately prior to the start of the semester and includes course registration, immigration, a campus tour and housing orientation. A tour of Seoul is also provided. A welcome party is hosted by KUBS faculty, staff and students. Korea University “Buddy Assistants� matches international students with Korea University students. Korea University also provides extensive opportunities for students to learn the Korean language, visit leading Korean companies and participate in their global internship program.

Students need a "Certificate of Admission" from KUBS in order to obtain a D-2 visa. The "Certificate of Admission" will be sent to your home school after all required documents are sent for admission to KUBS. Changwon National University

Description of School: Changwon National University (CWNU) aims at setting a Korean role model as a n institute of substantial education and research. With keen understanding of the ever-increasing demands of society for humanity, creativity and expertise from graduates, Changwon is constantly developing prog rams for students, the community and local industries, focusing on outstanding leadership in education wi th solid fundamentals and interdisciplinary studies. Working in close cooperation with companies in the southeastern industrial complex, famous for advanced machinery, the University has produced graduates with the highest reputation for their expertise and on-site adaptability. There are more than 10,000 students at CWNU, including 300 international students from approximately 15 countries.

Location: Changwon is the capital city of the Gyeongnam province and the eighth most populated city in South Korea. Gyeongnam province is home to some of Korea’s major historical and cultural assets.

Changwon is an attractive business city with high-growth potential through its global industry groups and high-tech industry clusters. Changwon National Industrial Complex, which was created by the heavy chemical industry development policy of the Korean Government in 1974, leads the chemical industrial and heavy machinery sectors of the Korean economy. Changwon is also famous for its many parks, gardens and festivals throughout the city. The seaside city of Jinhae holds the largest cherry blossom festival that attracts millions of visitors very year.

Changwon University offers a special summer program for Hofstra students. CWNU offers five students an opportunity to attend a ten-week Korean culture and language course from mid-May to mid-July.

Following course completion, two of these students (one from Zarb) will work at a paid internship (midJuly to mid-August). Students must have a junior standing and a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Academic Requirements: For semester programs, students must have attained sophomore standing. For summer program, students must have attained junior standing.

Credit System: The credit system is the same as at Hofstra. Almost all courses are three credits. Students generally take 15-18 credits per semester.

Housing: Changwon National University assists students in arranging accommodations on campus.

Peer Support and Integration Activities: Changwon National University runs a “one to one” integration program, which aims at the exchange of language and culture between international and Korean students.

Description of School: A modern university with a rich history, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) traces its roots back to 1632. Today, with more than 30,000 students and 285 programs, it is one of the largest comprehensive universities in Europe. It is a member of the League of European Research Universities and maintains extensive contact with other leading research universities around the world.

Characterized by a critical, creative and international atmosphere, UvA has a long tradition of openmindedness and engagement with social issues, in keeping with the spirit of the city with which it is inextricably linked.

Location: As a key cultural and intellectual center in western Europe, Amsterdam provides an ideal environment for academic study. Amsterdam attracts students from all over the Netherlands and beyond.

The inhabitants of Amsterdam are easy-going and welcoming to foreigners. English is the city's unofficial second language. It is easy to find English bookstores, TV channels, restaurant menus, library resources, and cultural activities. Amsterdam is a colorful and lively city. With some 800,000 residents, it has all the advantages of a major metropolitan center while retaining a cozy, small-scale feel. Amsterdam boasts beautiful architecture and over 150 canals, lending the city its characteristic shape and atmosphere. It is full of museums, art galleries, theatres, concert halls and many lovely parks.

Note: Each semester is divided in to three blocks of 8, 8 and 4 weeks, respectively.

Academic Requirements: For semester programs, students must have attained sophomore standing.

Credit System: Generally, each course carries 6-12 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), the equivalent of a three-credit course at Hofstra.

Housing: University housing is guaranteed for all global exchange students. UvA provides international students with accommodations in Amsterdam and the surrounding area, offering shared rooms, private rooms with shared facilities, and private rooms with private facilities. Peer Support and Integration Activities: A non-mandatory international student orientation week takes place immediately prior to the start of the semester and is organized by the International Student Network.

Each semester, the Institute for Dutch Language Education of the UvA offers extensive Dutch language courses (non-credit bearing) for exchange students from beginner to advanced level at a cost of approximately EURO 240. Upon successful completion of this course, exchange students may apply for fee reimbursement.

Students are required by law to have appropriate health insurance for the duration of their stay in the Netherlands. Description of School: Founded in 1499, the Universitat de Valencia (UV) is one of the oldest universities in Spain. It ranks fourth of all Spanish institutions on the Shanghai Ranking. For more than 500 years, the university has grown in to a modern, global institution and a leader in the application of new technologies. UV is considered one of the top five scientific centers in Spain. The University’s 55,000 students are spread among three campuses with business classes taught at the Tarongers campus.

The University provides many work placements/internships with 6,500 students participating through agreements with over 2,400 businesses and institutions.

Location: The University is located in Valencia, the third largest city in Spain. Situated on the Mediterranean Sea, the city is rich in cultural and history and possesses a unique charm. Its historic center is one of the largest in Spain. The ancient monuments, magnificent views and cultural attractions make Valencia one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Thousands of students visit Valencia each year to enjoy the mysteries of the old city with its beautiful cathedral and the futuristic buildings in the city’s riverbed. The city is famous for its sandy beaches and mild climate.

Housing: UV works with students to find accommodations in Valencia, either on or off campus.

Peer Support and Integration Activities: An orientation program is held before the beginning of each semester. UV offers an intensive Spanish language course before the start of the fall semester for a minimal fee. A semester-long Spanish language course is offered during the spring semester, also at a minimal fee.

Description of School: The University of Hertfordshire (UH) is an entrepreneurial university offering excellence in teaching and research. Hertfordshire has been identified as one of the top 100 universities in the world under 50 years old on the Times Higher Education rankings. The Business School, now the University’s largest school with over 3,500 students, is a vibrant place to study and has an over forty-year history of delivering exciting programs and educating successful graduates.

Location: The University of Hertfordshire is located in Hatfield in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, just 20 minutes by train from London’s King’s Cross Station. This charming city is the home of Hatfield House, whose history dates back to Tudor times. Princess Elizabeth Tudor was confined in what is now known as “The Old Palace” in Hatfield Park. It was here in 1558, that she learned that she had become Queen. The City of Albans, a predominantly Georgian town that dates back to Roman times, is nearby in Hertfordshire county.

Academic Requirements: For semester programs, students should have attained sophomore standing.

Credit System: A full course load at UH is 60 credits which is equivalent to 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) and 15 credits at Hofstra.

Housing: Accommodations are available on campus, in off-campus apartments (either managed by the University or private rentals) and with local families. All arrangements are made through UH’s Accommodation Office and are subject to availability.

Peer Support and Integration Activities: To help exchange students settle into life at UH, a free overseas students’ orientation program is offered before the start of each semester. The program provides information on immigration regulations, healthcare and other personal/financial issues. Evening social events, talks and campus tours are also arranged. Free Heathrow airport pick up is available for the fall semester and is arranged through submission of the Orientation Program Arrival Form.

Visa and Insurance Requirements: All students are responsible for obtaining the necessary visa. For more information, students should visit the U.S. Department of State webpage (www.state.gov) which contains links to each individual country’s embassy. There are two different types of study visas for the UK: Tier 4 General Student Visa is required if you intend to study in the UK for more than six months.

The Student Visitor Visa is required if your course is less than six months and you do not plan to extend

your stay or undertake any kind of employment. Students studying in the United Kingdom for one semester are not entitled to state healthcare and must arrange their own medical insurance.

Program Cost: For semester programs, students pay their regular tuition to Hofstra University. All scholarships and financial assistance will apply to exchange programs. For cost of summer programs, please contact Dean Gioia P. Bales.
