Rehabilitation counseling is a counseling specialty that assists persons with disabilities, mental health conditions, and substance use disorders achieve personal, career, and independent living goals in the most integrated settings possible through their services. Rehabilitation counselors are employed in community-based agencies, governmental agencies, treatment facilities, hospitals and rehabilitation centers, schools and colleges, veterans’ organizations, insurance companies, and private corporations. A 2014 American Counseling Association study found that rehabilitation counselors were the highest paid counseling specialty surveyed, with the best benefits. The Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) credential is nationally recognized and fully portable, with pathways for counseling licensure in many states. With approximately 61 million adults in the United States living with disability, rehabilitation counselors are in high demand.
