Welcome to Hofstra University!

You and thousands of other students who call Hofstra their home can now gain access to campus resources, over 240 student clubs and organizations, and the many social, cultural and career opportunities of the New York metropolitan area.

We have planned an exciting week full of programs and activities that will help you get better acquainted with Hofstra’s campus and become an engaged and involved student. Please look through this program and plan your Welcome Week by selecting events that interest you.

Be sure not to miss the “Pride” events.

Be sure you have your HofstraCard with you at all times.

You will need it for identification, meal/snack purchases (if you have a dining plan), and entry into events and residence halls (if you live on campus).

This week, sophomores, juniors, and seniors will serve as your Welcome Week Leaders (WWLs). WWLs will assist you during move-in, help run programs and events, and lead discussions. You will meet your WWL at 3:45 p.m. today (Thursday, August 28). Your check-in information will tell you where to meet your leader.

Look for this “Welcome Week Leader” symbol throughout this program for scheduled meals and events.

Take time to get to know your leader and build friendships with your group members! And, most important, have fun!

About Our Staff Nora Heidel ‘15 Nora Heidel is from the small town of East Hampton, Connecticut. She is a senior at Hofstra University with a double major in anthropology and criminology and is excited to be graduating a semester early this December! In addition to her academic studies, Nora has been very active and involved on campus with club sports and student organizations. Wanting to try something completely new during her first year at Hofstra, Nora joined the club rowing team and spent two incredibly fun years on it! She also served on the Student Government Association as a member of the Senate and a member of the Programming Board. Nora has been an active member of Hofstra’s Model United Nations, where she has served as chairperson for two of its high school conferences.

Nora has also completed the Blue and Gold Leadership Programs through the Office of Student Leadership and Activities, which was an incredible experience and helped her to grow as a student leader. She co-founded the Anthropology Club during her sophomore year and currently serves as the president. In her free time, Nora loves to run and exercise at the Mack Fitness Center, which is where she is currently employed during the academic year.

She also loves to read, drink tea, and research different archaeological sites that she hopes to visit and work on one day!

Christian Ladigoski ‘16 Christian Ladigoski comes right from Long Island, raised in Smithtown, N.Y. He is a junior and is very excited for the last two years of his college experience.

Christian is inspired in several ways with a technical mindset as an engineering major, but also as a creative musician, composer and broadcaster. He always has an optimistic outlook on life and loves making new friends and relationships with others. Around campus, you can find Christian utilizing his engineering/ operations experience at WRHU-88.7 FM, Radio Hofstra University, and also as vice president of the Hofstra University Robotics Academy. Christian is also a film composer and sound editor for the Hofstra Filmmakers Club, as well as a movie buff with great passion for motion pictures and film scores. He is a Pride Guide in the Office of Admission and loves sharing his previous experiences at Hofstra with others. Christian is eager to make a difference in his community and the people he interacts with because that is what gives him energy to do the things he loves the most. His ultimate goal is to have a knowledgeable engineering background and take that technical mind and apply it to a creative field. Whether it’s broadcasting, music or film, Christian is always happy, expressive and caring with everything he does. The world is full of many options and having an open mind with your life is a choice that Christian inspires others to make.

Batson Xiang Li ‘16 Born in China alongside the border to Russia, Batson’s childhood was heavily influenced by both Chinese and Russian culture. Batson wrote his first script at the age of 12 when he began his journey as a creative writer. As he entered adulthood, his creativity and love for life had made it a very exciting and joyful transition. Batson has become an innovator of ideas and wishes to create a better world for everyone. In his college career, he works and studies as an extremely organized and responsible adult – thanks to the discipline taught by his parents at an early age. To extend his interests in both literature and theatre, he has a double major in creative writing and English, with a minor in business and design. Aside from his busy academic schedule, he also manages to be involved in several on-campus organizations, including Entertainment Unlimited and Fashion Ave. As a junior and a returning Welcome Week coordinator, Batson sets high goals in order to achieve an awesome life and college experience for both himself and all of the new students.

Explore Next Door (END) Trip Registration Registration begins Thursday, August 28, at 9 a.m., and ends Friday, August 29, at 3 p.m.

Explore everything New York City has to offer! Transportation and tickets to these events are FREE and are on a first-come, first-served basis. Log in to the Hofstra portal (My.Hofstra.edu) to register for the trip of your choice. If you don’t have a personal computer, utilize Hammer Lab, located across from the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus. A confirmation email will be sent to you after you complete registration. Students can sign up for a service trip and another END trip; otherwise, only one trip is allowed per student. Please note: Spending money is necessary for food, souvenirs, and tour guide tips.

Stand Clear of the Closing Doors Clueless about the NYC public transportation system? This session will show you how to navigate the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) and NYC MTA bus and subway systems like a native New Yorker. There will be transportation-related giveaways too!

Saff, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Global Studies and Geography, Hofstra University Each year, Hofstra University Honors College (HUHC) invites a senior scholar to speak with incoming HUHC students about his/her own vision of the aims of education. This personalized and singular vision builds upon and draws from the speaker’s discipline or field of study.

After the presentation, HUHC representatives and other faculty lead small groups of students in reflective conversations about the lecture and their own views on the aims of education. Refreshments will be served. Please note: Attendance at this event is required of all entering HUHC students.
