Childhood – High School Services

❖ An Individualized Education Program (IEP): meets a child’s individual needs

❖ The Purpose of IDEIA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act): ❖Protects the rights of children with disabilities ❖Gives parents a voice in their child’s education

University Services (ADA, 1990)

❖ Postsecondary – institutions must provide reasonable accommodations ❖Guarantees access, not success

❖ Postsecondary students must disclose disability in order to receive reasonable accommodations

Student Access Services

Student Responsibilities ❖ Register with Student Access Services (SAS) ❖ Disclose any disabilities for which students wish to receive accommodations ❖ Fill out all SAS forms ❖ Meet with SAS to receive accommodation letters ❖ Self-advocate by handing accommodation letters to professors – students may choose to explain their personal needs in more detail ❖ If students receive accommodations to use the testing lab, students MUST fill out testing form 4 school days prior to exam during the semester, and in accordance with departmental deadlines during finals

Setting Expectations ❖ Students are responsible for their learning

❖ Professors are not expected to monitor daily progress ❖ Professors have the same expectations for students with disabilities as for their non-disabled peers

Families Suggestions ❖ Ask your student reflective questions ❖ Example: Can you tell me how your accommodations are helping you in your classes?

❖ Be aware of timelines and discuss them with your student ❖ Testing lab sign up form ❖ Add/Drop class dates on University calendar: hofstra.edu/academiccalendar
