TheHofstraStudentGovernmentAssociationstandswiththe“SayNototheCasinoCivicAssociation” inaskingNassauCountyExecutiveBruceBlakemantosaynotothecasino.AsstudentsofHofstra Universityandmembersofthiscommunity,wearedeeplyconcernedaboutthedirectnegativeimpacta casinocouldhaveonourcampusandthesurroundingarea.
Webelievethatallowingacasinotooperateincloseproximitytoourcampuswouldbeirresponsibleand couldhaveseriousconsequencestostudentsandcommunitymembers,suchasaddictionandadeclinein one’smentalhealthandwellbeing Scientificresearchandevidenceshowsthevastnegativesocialand culturalimplicationscasinoshaveoncommunities
AcasinoisaninappropriateuseoftheHUBwhichshouldbeusedfortheinnovationandcreativityofthe community Weshouldbeinvestinginopportunitiestofostergrowthanddevelopment,notinanindustry thatcanbedangeroustostudentsandcommunitymembers
