THE DEPARTMENT OF GLOBAL STUDIES AND GEOGRAPHY 2016
Welcome to the Department of Global Studies and Geography On behalf of the Department, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to our overview of the 2015/16 academic year. As will be seen in the following pages, it has been a very busy and productive academic year for our students and faculty. This was a year of big changes, both at Hofstra and in our Department. At Hofstra, our Department became part of the newly formed Peter. S. Kalikow School of Government, Public Policy and International Affairs. We look forward to contributing to the growth of the School and continuing to provide graduates who are truly global citizens and excellently placed to finding jobs within the global economy. We also welcomed a new Provost to Hofstra, Dr. Gail Simmons, who has continued supporting our important Department events, including the Geography Honors Society lunch and our student Club’s (Get Global), ‘Diversity Dinners.’ We are also grateful for the funding from her office and that of the HCLAS Deans Office for helping our students to present papers and posters at national and international conferences. This support is much appreicated by the Department and students, as is the very helpful environment, fostered by the Dean of HCLAS, Bernard Firestone, and the various members of his office. A big thank you from the Department! At the end of the 2015 academic year, Dr. James Wiley retired after 24 years of helping grow geography at Hofstra. While Jim is sorely missed, we were very fortunate to welcome Dr. Craig Dalton as a new Assistant Professor. Craig, has already reinvigorated our GIS offerings, including the introduction of two new intermediate GIS courses. We are also very excited about our newly designed B.S. major in Geography, GIS and hope to have NY State approval for the program by Fall 2017. This will provide students in the Natural Sciences with a skill set that is increasingly sought by employers in multiple disciplines. As can be seen from the News section of our website, our faculty continue to be highly productive in service to the university and broader community and in scholarly productivity. Despite our busy research agenda, we continue to be a student focused department, always making time to provide advisement for students and continuing to receive excellent student teaching evaluations. This was another successful year in terms of the quality of our majors and graduates, and in the various professional, academic and personal successes of our alumni. It is always a pleasure tracking our alumni, as they pass their professional exams, finish their graduate degrees, change careers, travel and so forth. It is testament to the strong bond that we have created in this Department, that it remains so easy to follow these career and personal milestones; they stay in touch with us, sometimes directly, but also through our members only Department Facebook and LinkedIn Groups. The successful and varied career paths of our graduates never ceases to amaze – medical doctors, news anchors, lawyers, teachers, corporate leaders, advocates in public policy institutions, GIS practitioners, urban planners, PR gurus, journalists and even a lacrosse coach! There really can be few Departments whose recent graduates have ranged from the Assistant to the Sergeant at Arms of the US Senate to Miss America! Again this year, a very high percentage of our graduates received various academic honors, and our Department produced over 40% of the Departmental Honors Dissertations in the Kalikow School. Clearly we are doing something right! Congratulations to all of our excellent graduates and I want to thank all the faculty, staff, administrators and students that have made this possible. Also a big thank you to Dr. Zilkia Janer, who so ably filled in as Acting Chair while I was on sabbatical in Fall 2015. I trust that the next academic year will be as productive and enjoyable. Dr. Grant Saff, Professor and Chair

We prepare students for a wide-variety of future careers. Global Studies was recently named among the top 10 majors for “the new economy.” Geography has become more sought after by employers particularly for those with knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Our graduates have found work in diverse fields and are prepared for a wide variety of graduate programs (law, urban planning, policy, international business, geography, policy studies, medicine, journalism). We offer a Pre-Med major in both Global Studies and Geography. GIS is an increasingly important tool used in the health care profession. We offer a BA major geography concentration in GIS. A BS major in GIS is coming in 2017! We offer a minor in GIS Global Studies allows students to build a program around their own interests. We encourage all our majors to study abroad or undertake for-credit internships. Our cost-effective semester length “European Odyssey,” provides our majors/minors with the opportunity to earn a full semester of credits while travelling through Europe. We are willing to help students tailor a program of study that’s right for them and help them shape rewarding post-Hofstra careers in our increasingly global future. Our faculty are globally recognized experts in their fields, and we provide excellent advisement and work with students to get them through the program as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. A large number of our majors are also in Honors College and we routinely produce more Honors Dissertations per year than any other major in the Social Sciences and/or Humanities. We have an active student club, and our geography majors have the opportunity of joining Mu Kappa our chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the Geography Honors Society.

Producing Majors for the new economy • Employers want graduates with an interdisciplinary background, who have studied abroad, completed internships and who understand global society. • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a “high growth industry,” with an estimated 10-year growth of over 330,000 geospatial professionals. • We offer the type of relevant and rigorous courses needed to compete within the global economy.
“The world is much more interesting than any one discipline.” Professor Edward Tufte, Yale University “For the typical American, the past decade has been economically brutal…While there are many culprits … globalization has had the greatest impact.” New York Times, 10/15/2011. “The expansion of globalization, has “put virtually every American job under pressure,” Friedman and Mandelbaum, “That Used to be US” 2011. We live in a globalized world. To compete, graduates need an understanding of the complexities of the inter-related economic, political and cultural processes that characterize globalization. This transcends any one academic discipline. That is why Hofstra created the inter-disciplinary program in Global Studies. Global change has a spatial component and occurs at multiple geographic scales, hence the continuing necessity of a sound geographic education. An understanding of geography, and the tools supplied by geo-spatial technology, are more crucial than ever for interpreting and studying the evolving global system.
Geography, more relevant than ever
Jobs for a Global Economy “The job category of "geographer" is poised for …. dramatic growth, with job openings projected to increase nearly 30 percent by 2020.”Doug Richardson, Executive Director, Association of American Geographers, 2013.

Knowledge of GIS and Geography are now more critical for Health Care professionals Disease does not respect international boundaries and it is increasingly necessary for medical professionals to have good knowledge of other societies and how disease vectors spread globally. Medical professionals also are making use of GIS skills to map and track diseases both within and between countries and even within the human body. We offer Pre-Med majors in both Global Studies and Geography and in Spring 2015 we had our first graduates with these specializations. So to quote a recent article from MIT (Sloan School), the “Prognosis for GIS in Health Care is Excellent.

Global Geo Services are creating jobs and helping drive economic growth “…Google announced via its official blog that…mapping technology has helped create jobs and push economic growth worldwide. Mapping tools such as GPS, location data, satellite imagery, and apps like Google Maps and Google Earth have caused mapping to flourish…The report reveals that the global geo services industry grosses up to $270 billion per year and dishes out $90 billion in wages, in addition to employing more than 500,000 people. Google illustrates the economic impact of geo services via an infographic, which depicts how the industry has improved in areas such as emergency response, agriculture, air transportation, and more. For example, mapping technology has helped businesses like UPS optimize delivery routes. As a result, UPS saved 5.3 million miles and more than 650,000 gallons of gas in 2011 alone.” http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RcMEz1LaqUg/UQi0f5OjMI/AAAAAAAAKrg/o_vVq5wvt5w/s1600/Geo%2BServices%2BInfographic%2B-%2Bfinal.jpg

We encourage our students to double major • Many of our students are double majors, particularly combining Global Studies with Geography and/or Journalism, Political Science, Public Relations, Economics, or History. • We have double majors from virtually every program in the Social Sciences and Humanities, and a growing number of PreMed Majors. • We have a growing number of double majors with the School of Communications. • We have many majors with a minor in International Business, and more International Business majors are adding a minor in Global Studies.
The Advantages of a double major • Consistent with national trends, the average cumulative GPA for declared dual majors at Hofstra is almost 10% higher than the average for students with single majors. • Around 30% of all dual majors in Hofstra College are from our Department. We even have a handful of triple majors!

Retirement of Dr. James Wiley, 1991-2015 During his 24 years at Hofstra, Jim was a mentor to both students and fellow faculty. His love of geography introduced generations of students to the discipline. Our Department is extremely grateful for all he did for us. We hope he enjoys his well-earned retirement. Student tributes As a ‘returning’ student, and one of the first to graduate from the newly-formed Department of Global Studies and Geography, I can attribute much of my on-going academic success to Dr. James Wiley. I consider myself extremely lucky to have been both taught and mentored by him throughout my time at Hofstra. Rarely will anyone be found to be so incredibly knowledgeable, and take such pride in their discipline and in their students’ progress. Even though he has retired (and exploring the world, I’m sure), we remain in touch where I can still rely on his penchant for bestowing wisdom upon me, and offering encouragement as I navigate my way through Ph.D. studies. There will always be special people we encounter throughout our lives, but very, very few (for me, anyway) left more of a lasting impression than Dr. Wiley- as a consummate geographer, and as a great person. He once referred to me a ‘feather in his cap’; on the contrary, it is Hofstra’s cap in which he is a jewel, and a person whose outstanding style I intend to emulate. Valerie Rizzuto, class of 2009. MA, Geography, Hunter College. Currently completing PhD, Geography, University of South Florida. “Professor Wiley is one of the most dedicated, insightful members of the Hofstra family. He helped ignite my love of geography and has been a dependable mentor ever since.” “In a semester’s worth of classes he’s capable of opening up a world that exists outside of the university, the state, the country–one that includes so many other cultures, so many other people and their histories, one that includes, well, the world.” “I owe him my gratitude for encouraging me to go as far as the Dominican Republic to simultaneously investigate my research question firsthand, practice my Spanish in a foreign context, and familiarize myself with my father’s family in that country, to the delight of my parents and myself.” “Dr. Wiley encouraged me to go out and do research in my home country of Haiti… and to accompany him to the study abroad trip in Cuba , which really was life-changing. Dr. Wiley has been immensely integral to my success here at Hofstra.”
We are committed to excellent Advisement and provide innovative help and advice to students “His office hours were so very helpful in so many ways I wouldn't know where to begin. From day one whether declaring my major to study abroad to planning for grad school. I feel like I planned out my life in his office. (Student comment: Ratemyprofessors.com)

Our excellent Advising is appreciated by students “…In my time at Hofstra, the Department was very hands on and really took the time to know the majors and minors. I not only received a great education but also extremely valuable advisement…The faculty…have been extremely influential in my life and I really valued my time in the department.”
“…I have a relationship with the professors and they happily sit down with me for hours discussing exactly what I need to do to be able to graduate on time. They are knowledgeable and have only ever advised me to do what is best for me.” “… I joined the newly formed department as one of their first Global Studies majors. I went on to become a double major, an aid in the department, and a peer teacher. I had the pleasure of watching the department grow, strengthen, and develop before my eyes. Most importantly though, I found a home there, a place where I was able to create meaningful relationships with professors. A place where I was constantly engaged with opportunities and meaningful discussions, and most importantly where I found a subject I was extremely passionate about. My time spent in the Global Studies and Geography department most certainly led me to where I am now. The professors motivated me to reach far and beyond a point where I thought my academic career would have ever taken me…”

Lasting impacts on lives and careers “…As a result of my experience in the Geography Department and the support of the staff, I was able to travel to Senegal for two months and Amsterdam for five months while I was enrolled at Hofstra… Today, I am a Vice President at a multi-national tech company with employees in seven countries, as well as a proud Hofstra alumni, both thanks to the amazing people at Hofstra's Geography Department.” Michelle, 07
A Testimonial from a 2016 Graduating Senior … this department will always hold a special place in my heart. I really do believe I found my home in this department not just with other students, where I have made friends for life, but with the professors as well… My best work is always required and I always want to turn that in, I never have wanted to slack in a Global Studies class. This department has been so welcoming and encouraging to all students to travel, dream big, do better, and to become active. I feel very comfortable in 209 Roosevelt … a place for me to discuss politics, philosophy, social injustices, and everything in between. This department has made me a better person… My life has forever been changed by the knowledge I gained during my time here. I am truly sad not about graduating from Hofstra, but to leave this department where I’ve found my true passion in social justice…Every professor I have had in the department has impacted me in someway and made me change and see things for the better. Words cannot describe how truly thankful I am for what this department has done and I can tell you right now, other students feel the same way. I would do anything for this department, whether I am here at Hofstra or (hopefully) at a job. [HAPPY POSTSCRIPT, UPON GRADUATION THIS STUDENT ACCEPTED A PUBLIC POLICY JOB IN WASHINGTON, DC]

What our alumni say about the Department “…I have just completed a Master’s Degree in Geography, and have recently been recruited to instruct Geography this semester at Nassau Community College. Next will be the PhD.” “I had found that the department I had previously been with was impersonal, and I never felt part of a community… being part of the Geography and Global Studies Department has been the main highlight of my time at Hofstra.” “Freshman year…I found my niche. I discovered what I was passionate about, and I owe that to those in the Global Department.”
“The Global Studies department influenced my studies in many beneficial ways. I especially enjoyed the flexibility of degree requirements and diverse student body that tends to participate in Global Studies classes…This degree is a wonderful resume builder…
Happy students become successful graduates “The Global Studies and Geography department is, quite frankly, the best department at Hofstra. They provide countless opportunities to their students, genuinely care about what they are teaching, and produce brilliant and accomplished graduates. They give Hofstra students a reason to want to come back to Hofstra …”
Socially relevant degrees “I am a first year at Hofstra and so far I have felt extremely happy to be here! It has been an amazing first semester and that has a lot to do with my courses and professors. In particular, I wanted to take the time to share with you how benefited I feel after taking the seminar, Child Geography…the courage has been instilled in me to go after my passions in culture and global studies, and also to make the changes I care so much to see!
