The Right Program for You School of Education The School of Education’s undergraduate programs nurture your communication, collaboration and leadership skills while preparing you for teaching certification or a career as a health scholar/ practitioner, and laying the groundwork for continued learning. Whether you want to work with children, adolescents or adults, you will participate in meaningful field assignments and observations early on in your studies as you learn to become an advocate for those you teach and serve. The School of Education is composed of the Departments of Health Studies and Kinesiology; Special Education; and Teaching, Literacy and Leadership. Undergraduates carry a full co-major in an academic area in addition to the education courses necessary for initial certification in early childhood, elementary and secondary education. There is also a five-year Bachelor of Science/Master of Science program that leads to a dual degree in physical education and health education. Key features include small class size, individual mentoring, a dedicated curriculum library, and field placement opportunities. Fellowships are also available for those who will teach in high-needs areas or math. You’ll interact with nationally recognized, well-published faculty who will prepare you – using the highly interactive multimedia resources of Hagedorn Hall – to meet the requirements to sit for the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations; approximately 96 percent of Hofstra program graduates pass these exams.
