This program has been convened by Barbara Gonzรกlez, Associate Professor of Mathematics, and Mario Murillo, Professor of Radio, Television, Film. Co-sponsored by the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program and the Center for Civic Engagement.
Directed by Gianni Converso and produced by Daniel Santana, Open Pit (2016) is a tour de force of investigative journalism and guerilla filmmaking that reveals the vicious face of dirty gold mining in Peru. In the heart of Cajamarca (northern Peru), the U.S.-based Newmont Mining Corporation operates the Yanacocha Gold Mine, one of the largest Open Pit mining operations in the world today. Backed by money from the International Finance Corporation and the World Bank, Newmont Mining has come to define dirty gold for a generation of the indigenous Quechua peasants who have lived in the Peruvian Andes since the Inca civilization. Faced with devastating mercury pollution, heavy metals and acid mine drainage, the people of Cajamarca fight a desperate battle to defend their water resources, their families, and their way of life.
