Minutes of the 82nd Senate Hofstra University Student Government Association

March 15th, 2018 Student Center Greenhouse Meeting called to Order at 6:08 pm 1. Quorum Call 2. Campus Dining Focus Group with Rich and Candace a. Dunkin Donuts opening is the big thing right now- they have had soft openings lately and will have a few bigger ones in the coming days b.

The Grand Opening will be the Monday after Spring Break

c. Will be a full Dunkin Donuts menu - note: all Dunkin Donuts have removed their lunch menus recently i.

Chairperson Labrie asks about breakfast sandwiches 1.

They will be there all day

Bits and Bytes changes are still being discussed

Einstein’s Bagels in CV Starr will be in progress right after graduation

Compass is looking for information about what items to include on the new Hofstra USA menu: (ex) do students want a menu similar to the Oak St. Cafe, etc.

Chairperson Tomasso is curious about Dunkin Donuts To-Go iced coffees - will they stay in the Student Center i.

Rich says they will be in the Dunkin Donuts on the Roosevelt Quad as well as in the Student Center still

Chairperson Tomasso explains that part of why she asked is they have not been in the Student Center lately 1.

Rich will look into this, they are on the typical order guide so is unsure why they wouldn’t be

Chairperson Labrie says that he doesn’t think bringing the Oak St. Cafe back to Hofstra USA is a bad idea but also he knows students would like to see a return of “staples” such as the brownie sundae, sampler platter, etc.

Rich says okay, he appreciates the feedback and knows milkshakes are popular at Smashburger so is hoping to keep milkshakes on the menu as well

Chairperson Denton asks about the Oak St.Cafe kiosks i.

They are there but off because the cable company said that there is no service in the Netherlands Core - they are working on getting wiring from the street - they need it to be powerful enough to handle the kiosks and are working on this

Senator Farooqui appreciates Rich letting him meet with the executive chef in the kitchen about halal options

Senator Leighton says that in conversation on campus people are appreciative of changes and opinions have changed recently - people were excited to know HofUSA is coming back and they definitely want a similar menu as the old HofUSA

Senator Spann asks how often the drink fridges in the dining center and the Netherlands particularly are restocked? Because she was in the Core on the snow day and the options were almost out i.

Rich says it is every day in the morning and throughout the day - it is a part of a role of an employee to keep it filled - on the snow day certain providers cancel their deliveries if the delivery trucks can’t get there so it might have had something to do with that

Senator Spann asks about specific drinks and how they decide what goes in the fridge 1.

Senator MacCarthy - thinks the food is expensive and knows there are other systems at other schools - she doesn’t know if this is his decision totally but can something be done abut this Dutch especially is pricy i.

Rich - the school decides on this dollar for dollar point card system and all pricing is approved through the university each year - only exception is franchises which are street pricing - we try to find things that aren’t that expensive but in Dutch the drinks are typically sold at retail price

ii.

Carl - the data collected shows that there is more dissatisfaction with the swipe once for a meal system so this dollar for dollar evens it out if someone doesn’t eat as much

Chairperson Tomasso asks if there’s a set markup rate i.

O.

Rich says there are different distributors that the school must use because they are not a food store chain they are a categorized differently and more labor goes into it this way which has to be incorporated and does raise the cost from a regular food store

Senator Doan asks if the Starbucks in the Student Center is a franchise i.

P.

It’s up to the managers of each specific area - if they notice something isn’t selling then they will take it out - feel free to ask the manager if they have something because if they get requests they can stock it

No it is a “proudly brew” - when the new one comes in that Cafe on the Corner will go away

Senator Fletcher - upper classmen run out of points but freshmen don’t - is there a way to set up a “venmo” system for the meal points i.

Rich - that would actually be through card services -dining doesn’t administer the program they only accept it as payment

ii.

Carl - there is a resource page on the website of what to do with your mealpoints - you can order catering for your house or stock up at the end of the year

iii.

Vice President Normandin adds - “go feed me” is an unofficial student run facebook group - president of HUSU created it and you post and say “I’m here does anyone with meal points want to pay” then someone may respond if they are there

iv.

Carl - pride pantry is there if students have an issue with getting food because of financial concerns

Senator Leighton asks why points can’t roll over year to year 1.

Q.

Senator Battipaglia says that the bread container next to the toaster is always open because the students don’t close it so the bread goes stale - is there a way to get something that shuts automatically i.

R.

Rich says this is because of a tax situation - if they roll over you have to pay tax on everything you bought

Rich will look into this

Senator Schmidt likes the vegan snacks in the student center and likes the hot food on Mondays/Thursdays and wants to know if there’s a way to get this happen on more days or all days of the week? Also salads are expensive to get all the time i.

Rich - it would be challenging to have vegan hot food every day because people like wing Wednesday and other variety but he can look for other places to do this or promote other options like the vegetarian noodle bowl

Candace says that on the Dine on Campus app - there are menus with notes about what is vegetarian/vegan that day so you can find it more easily

Senator Narain - heard from students they are excited about Dunkin

Chairperson Radeva - order mess ups have decreased recently

Senator Craig - she has been using the app with the menus so she can see what is there - also a long time ago they used to have steak but is there a way to have that come back or why did it disappear i.

Senator Sanchez - less complaints than last semester - how often is the pre-made food replaced or put out i.

W.

The max is two days - they have a production team that comes in at 6:30 am every day to make for campus and new stuff is put out every day

Senator Osner - a lot of positives based on the changes - she has heard comments about the Student Center not being open early enough for some students’ first class i.

X.

Rich says the space has been lost because of G8 and the fish market so having steak as well would be tight - they did use to have steak night so could look into bringing this back

Rich - the hours are set by the school - this semester it is a lot extended than past years so he is unsure of why this would be

Senator Harley - very positive about Dunkin - it looks great inside i.

Rich says - the one thing to warn people - this Dunkin does not have the capability to use the app

Candace - but they will take Dunkin gift cards

iii.

Rich - it may take some time to implement this though

iv.

President Cinquemani asks about on the go ordering

Rich says no- that is a part of the Dunkin app and also Compass is working on their own online ordering system for all of campus in the future

Senator Doan likes Dine on campus app - the only thing is certain items are not on the app -like cheese cups; also the workers have improved

Senator Rielly - the Egg Shoppe is good

AA. Senator Crofts - how do they decide which sandwiches go to the Grab and Go section - he likes chicken cutlet with mozzarella on ciabatta but it’s not always there i.

Rich - it’s not an exact science - the chefs like variety out there but if you want something not there request it so they don’t think it has no interests

BB. Senator Crofts asks if there are any plans to change Sbarros soon and what that timeframe would be i.

Rich - in the master plan to change the Student Center yes it will be redone but they are not sure to what yet it will be in 2019 at some point

CC. Senator Crofts asks about workers - will they go back to Dunkin if they worked at Cafe on the Quad before i.

Rich says yes no one has lost their job in this shuffle

DD. Senator Crofts - overwhelmingly positive feedback lately in all the changes they have made especially once HofUSA comes back EE. Chairperson Hinson - the sandwiches upstairs are put in the toaster with lettuce, tomato and mayo on them so they all get cooked and would like to request that they do not do this; toast it first before condiments FF. Chairperson Hinson - CCE is doing event for Earth Day and she would like to ask if Compass would be interested in tabling with their produce i.

Rich - their produce farm is from LI when it’s in season which is great and yes they would be interested

ii.

Candace - yes follow up with Candace and it’s the 18th during CH- they will totally be doing this and also have their farmers market on the Bits quad that day

GG. Senator Ismail - went for the Dunkin open and they were out of coffee also is wondering what happens to left over food at the end of the day i.

Rich says he doesn’t know who gave her the voucher so late but it ended at 2 so that might be why

A lot of stations are made to order - Grill, Cucina, etc so it’s mostly the Asian station and G8 - they have worked with some local food banks but they have strict rules and limitations on amounts and they do donate the food when they can but it is on a fluctuating basis

iii.

Senator Ismail suggests selling food from the day before at a lower price the next day because it might be good for people on a budget here 1.

Rich says they have not thought about doing this - it’s an interesting concept

Carl - it would be hard to ensure quality and then if they get complaints this would be a very difficult line to walk just for a small discount

HH. Chairperson Tomasso - would like to change the pasta boxes because the cardboard gets soggy and very hot also would there be a possibility to get more sauces like in Bits and old HofUSA

because she feels bad asking the workers all the time and making them stop what they’re doing to get some honey mustard i.

Rich - will look into boxes and the sauces are a spacing issue

Chairperson Read - excited about Dunkin but then there was a negative connotation with an invite only opening - so maybe in the future having different language like “it’s soft opening come back this day” might be more well-received and also get the word out about when it is opening so people don’t get concerned; also she likes the G8 station food it’s very good and she doesn’t even have any allergies

JJ.

Senator Rob - CV Starr is changing and she would really like the ice cream from there to go somewhere else i.

Rich says yes the ice cream cannot stay in CV Starr because of the franchise but he will look at moving them

KK. Vice President Normandin - misses the dessert station that would come in the middle of the Student Center occasionally i.

Rich says it actually wasn’t that popular but yeah they can see about bringing it back

ii.

Vice President Normandin - over the summer it had been mentioned that Egg Shoppe might have pancakes and other breakfast all day too - is this happening or potential at all still; people like this

iii.

Carl says maybe this was about Oak St. Cafe

iv.

Rich says he will look back at the correspondence it depends on the equipment there and their capabilities

Vice President Normandin says new drink rotations are really good and the Chinese food station is so improved

Vice President Normandin- Starbucks in Student Center line has been long 1.

LL.

yes, unfortunately because Cafe on the Quad is closed it is the only place people can get coffee also they are increasing getting it out there that the ABP in library has a wide selection of drinks as well

President Cinquemani - all you can eat brunch at HofUSA was really good too and incorporates a one swipe for full meal thing; try getting hard bowls for pasta station too because it’s more eco friendly than the plastic containers

MM. Chairperson Denton - she finds the tiny Chinese station containers hard to close NN. Chairperson Labrie - the spicy mayo at the sushi place is in front of a vent and gets warm; Sono in the rotation doesn’t have guacamole or sour cream and those are crucial i.

Rich says oh yes this will be changed because they always have both of those things they just need to be brought out

OO. Chairperson Tomasso says mozzarella sticks, grilled cheese, chicken fingers, brownie sundae and the sampler are all HofUSA staples to bring back i.

Vice President Normandin adds that SGA will write up a little report about thoughts on the HofUSA menu but yes those all work

PP. Senator Harley wonders why the transition is going from plates to paper boats in Oak St. Cafe i.

He will follow up because the scheme at first was plate-first but will see about asking about this - the kiosks should have a dine in/out option when they are set up which would have helped with this

QQ. Chairperson Denton asks about Compass events this semester i.

Candace - celeb chef is coming first Wednesday in April

Farmers Market starts the week of 4/18

Focus groups will be getting setup - SGA’s is 4/12

Late night breakfast will be scheduled

Rich - In the fall they are putting together a farm tour for students interested in seeing the local farms

Compass is working with a sustainability professor to use the greenhouse for herbs or produce to use in the Hofstra kitchens

ii. The Voucher system has been put into place and is being used by SGA as well as clubs that the vouchers were allocated to iii. No clubs have requested 5% legislation funding iv. Comptroller Kutsch is working on perfecting the voucher system process c. Appropriations - S. Read i.

Has held 4 allocations meetings - they have been affected by snow days

ii. Has had a diverse group of clubs come in for funding iii. Held the first Treasurer training - Senator Rob attended to help iv. Attended ISLC to ensure club leaders had accurate information v. There is a new system of submitting budgets through a google form which will make it much easier to share the budgets submitted with club advisors vi. Budget weekend is April 6-8 d. Still working on Nexus and yearbooks in general

ii. Still working on club office spaces - Fire Marshall inspected the offices and dealt with any minor infractions iii. Organizing and cleaning out the SGA Storage Space iv. The yearbook initiative is underway and there is a deadline of mid-April: if it is nowhere after this the initiative will be dropped v. The additional yearbooks will be thrown out - they tried to recycle them and have sent as many of them as possible to archives e. Public Relations - I. Hinson i.

Chairperson Hinson says getting all the Public Safety event questions posted on social media was exciting and shoutout to Associate Jack for helping

Amazon lockers are coming to campus

There is a want for students to have peaceful demonstrations on campus but there has been miscommunication about the process - it is relatively simple form on the website so spread this word

Panhellenic event will be rescheduled for April

The Townhall event is 4/25 during Common hour

Nominate students for HSLA - SGA is sponsoring a table for Gala that any student nominated has a chance to be randomly chosen for

USenate passed two pieces of legislation

iii.

1.

First, to put an elaboration that if a student has to miss class for a religious observance it should not impact their grade and they can have more time

2.

Second- a probation action plan dealing with students whose GPA’s are 2.0 but are still in good standing with the university so that they now must get a personalized action plan with their CUA advisor

Her and President Cinquemani are a part of the Bookstore Advisory Committee to gauge how the Hofstra bookstore can be better because the bookstore contract is up - the next meeting is April 16th and from now until then they want to know about what students want: please focus the “Heard at Hofstra” listening on the bookstore 1.

Physical renovations - Getting a lounge upstairs with like the commuter lounge

Process - how do students buy books, feedback on the process, etc.

Immediate feedback:

Senator Craig - knows that professors are told they have to put down a textbook even if they do not use a textbook - why have students buy one if they don’t need it - as students get older they catch on

b.

Senator Doan - is the post office part of bookstore? i.

Vice President Normandin says it’s part of it so it would be taken into consideration

ii.

Senator Doan doesn’t like having to walk up the stairs from the post office

c.

Senator Schmidt - she got very large packages at one point and needed so much help with it to get all the way to the Netherlands

d.

Senator Crofts - when professors wrote textbooks and force students to buy it they’ll go to Hofstra but if it’s any other ones - they go to amazon for the books that are cheaper i.

e.

Senator Greenberg - in regards to price matching - he was told they couldn’t price match one of his because he wanted to rent one but they told him they did not price match the rental

f.

Senator MacCarthy - there are specific conditions for price matching maybe they should publicize the policies more

g.

Senator Fletcher - there were multiple books that were back ordered for multiple months and then they ran out of rental copies so he was forced to buy it and it was a big hold up and confusion about paying

h.

Senator Farooqui - can they use the price match policy as the new price for everyone who brings this in i.

Rita says - they can’t set that because amazon changes the prices too

Senator Harley - you choose the used version but then if they don’t have that and get bumped up in price without a notification and just because you sign off on it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be notified i.

President Cinquemani says they will refund this fully and also it’s because of a university policy

Open Cabinet - anyone interested in seeing how Cabinet functions can come and observe as a gallery - it will be soon - and Public Safety might come for a focus group and have a follow-up to the Public Safety event

Chairperson Tomasso - is there a way that Public Safety can come to Senate so more people can be in attendance 1.

Senator Fletcher - the dog therapy has been down here twice but have heard nothing about it until the day of like outside the room of the event and would like to know about this

Senator Schmidt - health and safeties were supposed to do a follow up inspection of her room in 24 hours and no one has come back to her room yet

Senator Greenberg - is wondering if RSR’s have consistent ways rules work because some are very strict and call public safety/write you up right away and others let you in with a different id - are there rules

Senator Radeva - heard people are selling drugs in Hammer lab

E.

Senator Osner - friends in Vander Poel say the elevator keeps breaking down and they get stuck in it

Senator Harley - they confiscate lamps and personal items and she has had it last semester and would like to be better informed because it’s not fair that if it was a hazard

G. Senator Craig - same thing happened to her and she emailed her RD and they said rooms are checked randomly but she didn’t think this was true H.

Senator Doan - on Hofstra’s website there are grammatical and spelling errors; GIHU has a calendar of events, the university has a calendar of events, there is no universal place to see everything going on on campus

Chairperson Radeva - Non-Hofstra students cannot be allowed in without a physical host present and if you are a resident who forgot your card - saying your name and room number means you are allowed to go and have 30 minutes to go retrieve your id and come back and your name is taken off the list - if it happens to you otherwise she advises to report the RSR because there is a handbook and the RSRs should be aware 1.

Senator Schmidt clarifies how signing in works -you have to be there all the time someone signs into your room? a.

The original plan - it was Senator Schmidt’s idea to have a dunk tank during common hour in front of Bits and Bytes and would ask spring sports athletes to go in the dunk tank - the issue right now is that legal is being an issue and if athletics cannot get it through it would turn into water balloons

iii. Senator Spann asks if they have reached out to other sports besides Baseball and Lacrosse 1.

Chairperson Tomasso asks who else she means? They are the only two mens spring sports unless she went into women’s teams

iv. This is the first time there has been a Spirit Week in the spring so they are trying to get many new ideas v.

Dear Hofstra Community, In light of the recent conversation regarding the Thomas Jefferson statue located outside of the Student Center entrance, the Student Government Association believes that all students have a voice on campus and a right to be heard.

Student Government Association does recognize that the statue causes a serious conflict on campus. In an attempt to best represent the varying opinions within the Hofstra community, Student Government Association is willing to facilitate a continuous dialogue to accommodate a solution that is inclusive to all.

Introduction: Purpose and responsibilities of Elections Commission (EC) A. The EC is responsible for running and maintaining events during the election process for Spring SGA elections. Duties include but are not limited to: 1. Hosting Information Sessions 2. Promoting Information Sessions 3. Booking Rooms for all events 4. Handing out signature packets 5. Answering questions of potential candidates 6. Reviewing signature packets and approving signature packets 7. Reviewing bios and pictures for ballot 8. Promoting voting on campus 9. Moderating, planning, and hosting Debate if more than one contesting ticket 10. Tabling for Voting 11. Observing campaigning, monitoring that rules are enforced 12. Working with PR for election flyers, posters, and other promotional activities 13. Emailing winning candidates 14. Planning the Elections Bash

Protocol: Due to the unique nation of this year’s commission where some committee members are re-running on the ballot, duties for some committee members are restricted as allow for a fair election.

A. Committee members who are re-running will not be allowed to table for voting, answer emails or have elections account email access, not be allowed to email winning candidates, and so forth. Assigned duties will take this into account.
