Six Years have passed since Superstorm Sandy changed the lives of everyone here in our community. Many are still feeling the effects of the storm and some are still not home, while others worry about the future. Our City has continued to move forward and we have made tremendous progress, but there is still much more to do to prevent effects of climate chaos from worsening, as well as to protect ourselves from the damage climate chaos is already causing. We continue our commitment of supporting one another not only in rebuilding resiliently, but as we heal and re-emerge together…

STRONGER ● SMARTER ● SAFER

Carryout Bag Ordinance ➢ Long beach passed Nassau County’s first-ever Carryout Bag Ordinance ➢ Our largest grocery store, Stop & Shop has significantly reduced distribution ➢ If the same percentage is achieved across all stores, it could significantly reduce pollution, greenhouse gas emissions

Why is Long Beach such a great place for rooftop solar?

Long Beach Building Coverage

13

Total Solar Capacity in Long Beach  4.8 Million SF is available for rooftop solar  82,000 MWH Electricity per year  Equivalent to 57,700 tons CO2 annually, 12,200 cars taken off the road or 1.5 millions trees over 10 years.

Buildings with Rooftop Solar (~350-400)

Commercial Properties with Solar Long Beach Public Library, 111 West Park Avenue (48 panels) Long Beach Regional Catholic School, 735 West Broadway (100 panels) Retail Center, 74 West Park Avenue (Permitted) Long Beach Florist, 951 West Beech Street (42 panels) George’s Hair and Nail (14 East Park Avenue) (56 Panels)

Sustainability is a Budgeted Priority in Long Beach!

Long Beach Leads by Example  Long Beach is a NYSERDA “Clean Energy Community”  Fast Track Permitting (voters passed in 2013)  LED streetlight upgrades (2016)

 Energy benchmarking of City buildings  Code inspector training on energy efficiency building

practices

Our Study  Survey to understand the reasons

why residents of Long Beach chose to install solar at home and to learn about their experiences.  Mailed surveys to 356 rooftop solar

residents (74 responded)  We are presenting some of our

findings and analysis today, and will publish our research in an academic journal in the near future.

How resident’s learn about solar installations? • 86% reported not being

influenced by friends, family, or neighbors to get solar, the decision was all theirs.

“Solar power beats many other “good” and highly recommended investment options — stocks, bonds, and CDs. If you want to invest for a better retirement, college money for your kids, or simply to make the most of your money… for whatever future use you find most enticing, you should really be considering solar.” Source: https://www.costofsolar.com/solar-roi/

How did you pay for your solar panels?

PURCHASE METHOD USED

• Purchasing your own panels in

cash or with a loan earns you state and federal rebates to help with up-front costs, but you’re responsible for upkeep. • The benefit of Leasing solar panels is that you are not responsible for the up-front, maintenance, or repair costs. The down side is that you don’t get the rebates and the panels can be taken back at the end of the lease period.

How do you select a solar company?

Advice from Early Adopters! “Make sure they read the deal carefully. Every company has a different plan so research is important.”

“Get a new roof and talk to a couple of solar companies.”

“Waste no time and do it !”

“The sales person makes all the difference, XXX was the main reason we went with solar. “ “Shop around, get a warrantee”

“Discuss tax breaks of owning vs leasing with accountant ahead of time.”

“Buy, don't lease. Lease isn't as good a deal. Make sure you understand the subsidies.“ “Don't install more panels than needed, net metering isn't worth it.”

“Get estimates from multiple companies, negotiate, install in spring/summer to accumulate Energy.”

“Don't do it in Long Beach or New York, you have no protection in case someone wants to block your sun.”

How Does Solar Work? Solar PV systems have four main components: 1. Solar photovoltaic panels ("solar panels") 2. Inverters convert “DC” to “AC” 3. “AC” energy delivered to home 4. Net metering and monitoring

Parts of a Solar System.

How Much Solar Does a House Need? Every system is different. Depends on: • Annual energy consumption • How much solar fits on roof

Average homes in our area… Spend around: $200/month Use around: 12,000 kWh/ year

• Pitch, orientation, and shading

Average Homes Needs: 10 kW system 800-1,000 sq ft of roof space

History + Reasons for Growth in our region

Why is New York Going Solar? • Monthly Bill of $240 x 12 = $2,880/Year

• $2,880 x 10 years = $28,800 • $2,880 x 20 years = $57,600 • $2,880 x 30 years = $86,400 *And that’s with no rate increases! With a 2% annual electric rate increase, it is over $100,000!

New York Incentives TODAY NYSERDA Rebate in NYC and north PSEG – Low/middle income families qualify for a utility rebate + NYS low interest loan State Tax credit of 25% (capped at $5,000) Federal Tax credit of 30%

Property taxes can not be raised for going solar (15 years) NYC – 20% Property Tax Abatement No sales tax on equipment

TOMORROW Community Solar! Rebates being phased out

Net metering – changing this year! (already changed in NYC and rest of NYS) REC program rolling out next year

NYS goal of 50% by 2030
