Description:
The Irish Studies Program at Hofstra is proud to host and to support the Nassau County Ancient Order of Hibernians in presenting its annual Irish Feis and Festival. The Feis is a celebration of Irish culture and history. The day features traditional dance and piping competitions, a marketplace, plus Irish language and Gaelic sports workshops.

Reel Ireland Film Series and LGBT Month: Breakfast on Pluto

Description:
Directed by Neil Jordan, based on the Patrick McCabe novel, and starring Cillian Murphy and Stephen Rea. The film focuses upon the life journey of a trans woman and explores the relationship between identity, violence, and exclusion. Discussion to be facilitated by Professors Maggie Burke and Greg Maney.

Symposium: The Burial at Thebes

Description:
Irish Studies Program Co-Director and noted literary scholar will discuss Nobel poet laureate Seamus Heaney’s adaptation of Sophocles' Antigone. The Burial at Thebes was commissioned to celebrate the centenary of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. The tragedy is used to reflect and to comment upon recent wars, loyalties, and the power of the state.

Directed by Cindy Rosenthal, music by Art Solari, choreography by Stormy Brandenberger, and starring Hofstra drama students, The Burial at Thebes is Seamus Heaney’s taut, accessible and timeless version of Sophocles’ Antigone. Antigone is hailed as one of the most enduring texts in the western canon, and Heaney’s version has been cheered as “eerily relevant” and “the right story to be telling now.”
