Preparation of a Bibliography for a New Commentary on Book VI of Vergil’s Aeneid Isabella A. Colombo Under the Guidance of Professor Ilaria Marchesi Department of Comparative Literature, Languages, and Linguistics Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The Assignment

The Procedure

To prepare an annotated bibliography of scholarship addressing Aeneid 6 and to upload as much of this scholarship as possible to a shared Dropbox folder

This assignment consisted of two parts: the first part involved acquiring and creating a bibliography of scholarship which addresses Aeneid 6 and which was published after Nicholas Horsfall’s 2013 Commentary on Aeneid 6. The second part involved acquiring, when possible, and transcribing into the bibliography the sources cited by Horsfall in his Commentary on Aeneid 6.

Results A 67-page annotated bibliography About 390 entries Over 120 abstracts About 210 uploaded texts 32 subfolders Familiarity with the ILLiad system Education on Aeneid 6, the Aeneid, and Roman history Familiarity with the names of leading classicists and Vergil scholars Deep appreciation of the fact that a fair amount of scholarship is not written in English

To allocate scholarship published during or after 2013, I perused L’Année Philologique, a classics database to which Hofstra University provides access. From searches conducted on L’Année Philologique I located a number of articles and obtained these articles either directly from the Hofstra University Library or via Interlibrary Loan. I uploaded the pdf of each article to a Dropbox folder shared with Professor Marchesi and, depending on the topic of the article, often placed each article into a specific sub-folder. I examined each article for references to sources addressing Aeneid 6 which had also been published during or after 2013; when I found a citation for such a source, I searched for that source on L’Année Philologique, obtained the pdf of that text, uploaded the pdf to the Dropbox folder, and perused that text for references to other recently-published scholarship addressing Aeneid 6. For every source I found on L’Année Philologique I created a bibliographical entry in a Microsoft Word document. Whenever possible, I included in the bibliography the abstracts of articles and noted the pages of the texts on which Aeneid 6 was specifically addressed. In the bibliography for his Commentary on Aeneid 6, Nicholas Horsfall provides very little bibliographic information; accordingly, to complete the second part of this assignment, I conducted searches on L’Année Philologique and Google Scholar to find further bibliographic information on Horsfall’s sources (information such as first name of authors, the full titles of texts, and the publishers of the texts). After finding this information, I created full bibliographic entries for each of Horsfall’s sources and acquired, when possible, articles referenced by Horsfall via ILLiad which I subsequently added to the shared Dropbox folder.
