Hofstra University is jazzing up the annual Dutch Festival! This year we’ll fill the gardens with jazz music, and for the first time, we will feature a funky city country band! Enjoy delicious food, shop at vendor tables, stroll our beautiful gardens, and pick up a plant or two at our Hofstra Arboretum sales. Magic shows, puppets and craft activities are sure to delight the children.

Featuring the Wild Quartet and starring Pamela Rose, vocalist Kristen Strom, saxophone Tammy Hall, piano Ruth Davies, bass Allison Miller, drums Jazz and blues vocalist Pamela Rose makes a compelling case for the enduring contributions of women to America’s treasure trove of popular music, from Alberta Hunter to Peggy Lee, in this multimedia showpiece that shines a light on the forgotten contributions of the prolific, feisty and talented women of Tin Pan Alley (1920-1950).

We’ll take you out to the ballgame with some of baseball’s greatest musical hits, including “The First Baseball Game” (originally sung by Nat King Cole), “Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio,” “Baseball Boogie,” “Van Lingle Mungo,” “Meet the Mets,” “Jake, Jake, The Yiddisha Ball Player,” “Talkin’ Baseball,” “Say Hey” (Willie Mays), and “Heart,” from the Broadway musical Damn Yankees, to name just a few.

The Italian Experience Festival has grown to be a popular Long Island tradition, celebrating Italy’s gifts of culture, education and commerce to America. The festival features food, vendors, handmade crafts, exhibits by cultural organizations, music, dance, poetry, and much more for the entire family to enjoy!

Guest Conductor: David Ramael, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Orchestral Activities, Hofstra University Festival Brass Band, under the direction of renowned trumpet player Manu Mellaerts, presents an exciting program of standard works for brass band. Festival Brass Band is one of the premier brass bands in Europe and is known for its unrivaled virtuosity and richness of sound. Including the United States premiere of Sinfonietta No. 1 by Johan de Meij, who will be a special guest at this concert performance. Additional works to be performed include the premiere of Harry James: Trumpet Concerto, William Tell Overture, Dragonheart, and Windows of the World.

From marches to ragtime, waltzes to two-steps, polkas, jazz, and show tunes, the songs of baseball are descriptive, humorous, and inspirational, and their lyrics mirror the imagery of their time.

This innovative chamber group zigzags through countries, time periods and stylized dances – from classical, flamenco, 1950s Brazilian sambas, and modern-day Argentine tangos to jazz classics, world music and commissioned works written for the quartet.
