This is simply an example of what 8 semesters might look like for incoming First-Year students. Shown below are major requirements and university general education requirements. If you declare your major later, or are a Transfer Student, your grid will look considerably different. Your course choices may vary. Note that you will complete one of your NS Distribution requirements taking GEOL 005 and that many of the SBLY Degree Elective courses will fulfill distribution requirements in the BH, HP, CC, and CP categories (see HU Bulletin for a complete list).

Up to 6 credits of Distribution courses may be taken during Study Abroad.

At least 15 semester hours in the major field of study must be taken at Hofstra.

SBLY 105 (Seminar) must be taken before SBLY 110 (Studio), usually in Fall and Spring of senior year.

SBLY 180 (Internship) may be completed during Summer or January sessions.

NOTES Foreign language must be taken up to completion of level 3 or placement above.

Some Degree Requirement courses (AP/IB/Transfer) taken prior to Hofstra can count toward the major. Degree Requirement courses taken prior to your first year can count toward general education requirements or elective credits, whether taken at Hofstra or transferred in.

You are not required to take Summer or January courses (for which there is no financial aid). You can complete your degree of 124 credits with 5 3-credit courses every semester provided you take an additional 4 credits during your time at Hofstra or transfer in AP or other pre-college credits. Note that you can take up to 17 credits per semester without paying additional tuition. Some courses such as math, physics, and chemistry are 4 credit courses.

Also, you may consider taking the 3 credit January Session study abroad program in the GalĂ pagos Islands and Ecuador (additional tuition and program fees) or doing additional internship or independent research projects.

We encourage SUSTAINABILITY students to participate in internships, independent research, or other forms of experiential learning by requiring all students to complete an internship and an independent study project as part of their degree coursework.

Students who wish to stay at Hofstra and earn a MASTERS DEGREE in SUSTAINABILITY may elect to enter the 5-year program. Students begin taking graduate courses during their senior undergraduate year and complete their MA degree after one additional year of graduate study. *In addition to going on study abroad for either semester in their third year, students can go for the entire academic year in their third year, for a semester in their second or fourth years, or for a short-term program in the summer or during the January break.
