This example shows how an incoming first year student might complete a Chinese Studies major in 8 semesters. If you declare your major later, have advanced credit or competency in a foreign language, or are a Transfer Student, your grid will look considerably different.

Students who are interested in China have two major options: the Chinese Language Major, and the Chinese Studies Major. Both consist of language courses and China-related courses, but the Chinese major requires more language courses.

Your choices may vary. Many of the China-related courses required for the Major will also count as a distribution requirement, and some fulfill more than one requirement, such as Cross Cultural or Interdisciplinary Studies.

Up to 6 credits of Core Distribution credits may be taken during Study Abroad.

Students are required to meet with an academic advisor at least once a semester.

Whenever possible, we encourage students in our language programs to participate in a study abroad program for a summer, semester, or year. Students may go abroad as early as summer after their first year, though most students commonly do so in their sophomore or junior year Requirements for the major: The BA major in Chinese Studies consists of the successful completion of 18 semester hours of Chinese language courses beyond level 2, and 12 semester hours in Chinarelated courses, selected under advisement. At least six semester hours must be taken in-residence.

FIRST YEAR The grid below assumes that you are beginning Chinese at Hofstra; however, many students receive placement in a language, which reduces the number of courses required to complete the major. Other students begin the Chinese majors as a first-year student. Courses required for the major are in bold type.

Many things! An undergraduate degree program in Chinese or Chinese Studies provides many important skills to launch a successful career path. In addition to acquiring proficiency in Chinese, students develop excellent skills in oral and written communication, gain an understanding of other societies and cultures, and learn to analyze issues critically. This degree helps prepare graduates for careers requiring familiarity with multicultural perspectives. Graduates work in many fields, such as education, journalism, business, law and diplomacy, and travel and tourism. Graduates with Chinese Studies major may become teachers and scholars, journalists, lawyers, librarians, literary or film critics, translators and managers (even CEO) in the business world. NOTES * Chinese or Chinese Studies majors are not required to take Summer or January courses (for which there is no financial aid). You can readily complete your degree in four years if you begin studying languages your first year or have advanced placement in one or more language areas. However, we encourage students in Chinese to study in China if that is an option for them. ** We encourage Chinese or Chinese Studies Majors to add a double major or minor in another area. ***We encourage students to study abroad when possible. In addition to going on study abroad for either semester in their third year, students can go for the entire academic year in their third year, for a semester in their second or fourth years, or for a short-term program in the summer or during the January break. For Chinese or Chinese Studies majors, study abroad is especially helpful in obtaining both fluency in the language and a high degree of cultural competence.
