DIRECTIONS to HOFSTRA By automobile, Hofstra can be reached easily by main east-west and north-south roads. Of the parkways, Meadowbrook Parkway is closest; it runs north and south between the Southern State Parkway and Northern State Parkway. Leave Meadowbrook Parkway at exit M4 (Hempstead Turnpike); Hofstra is approximately 1.5 miles to the west.

Upon exiting Meadowbrook Parkway, follow directions below.

Location A: Student Center Theater/Multipurpose Room/Plaza Rooms/Main Dining Room, Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at traffic light before second pedestrian bridge, entering North Campus. At second STOP sign, bear left and park. Walk into the Mack Student Center (building with bell tower). Upon entering doors, please follow signs to specific location.

Location B: Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater/David Filderman Gallery/ Rochelle and Irwin A. Lowenfeld Conference and Exhibition Hall, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at traffic light before second pedestrian bridge, entering North Campus. At second STOP sign, bear left and park. Walk into the Mack Student Center and continue straight ahead. Cross over pedestrian bridge to Axinn Library.

Location C: John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus. Go past two STOP signs and park. Building on the left is the John Cranford Adams Playhouse (lions in front of building).

Location D: Joan & Donald Schaeffer Black Box Theater, New Academic Building, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus. Go past two STOP signs and park. Building on the right is the New Academic Building, which houses the Joan & Donald Schaeffer Black Box Theater.

Location E: Emily Lowe Gallery, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus. Go past two STOP signs and park. The Emily Lowe Gallery of the Hofstra University Museum will be on your left. There are three visitor parking spaces directly in front of the Emily Lowe Gallery.

Location F: The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn left at traffic light before second pedestrian bridge onto California Avenue. After first STOP sign, make first left into parking lot.

Location G: Medical Education Theater, Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, North Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at traffic light before second pedestrian bridge, entering North Campus. At second STOP sign (Paul Manship’s Group of Bears sculpture at intersection), make a right onto Northern Boulevard. At the first STOP sign, turn right to enter the School of Medicine driveway and continue into the parking lot.

HOFSTRA HOSTS 2016 PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE We are pleased to once again host a presidential debate at Hofstra University and invite you to explore our programming.

“Hofstra University is honored to be called on to host the first presidential debate on September 26, 2016. This is an extraordinary privilege and responsibility,” said Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz.

“We greatly appreciate the faith shown in us by the Commission on Presidential Debates, and we have begun preparations for a very successful debate.”

The debate itself is produced and sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that controls all aspects of debate production. While the limited number of tickets that may be allocated to Hofstra University from the CPD will be distributed via lottery to current students, we invite members of the community to join us for our public education series.

SYMPOSIA Hofstra Cultural Center presents Friday, September 23 40th Anniversary of George Sand Association

The George Sand Association (GSA), the North American home for studies on George Sand’s work that also established the Hofstra University Cultural Center, began at Hofstra University in 1976. During this time, 22 international conferences have been sponsored and/or co-organized by the society in the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Ireland, Hungary and Germany.

On Friday, September 23, we mark the 40th anniversary of the group that launched and has sustained Sand studies in North America and abroad with a one-day symposium. Please join us to celebrate the George Sand Association as well as Hofstra’s commitment to and support of a growing and internationally recognized literary society. Keynote address by Christine Planté, professor of French literature and gender studies, Université de Lyon 2 (UMR LIRE).

Wednesday, October 5 Race and Religion in the Americas: A Critical Spiritualities Symposium

In the Americas in the last five years, a combination of factors has pushed religion and race to the forefront of discussion in media, policy, and scholarship. At Hofstra, initiatives to remedy campus inequalities coincide with the establishment of the Peter S. Kalikow School of Government, Public Policy and International Affairs, charged to add interdisciplinary scholarship and intellectual inquiry to discussions of policy and social movements. In this symposium on race and religion in the Americas, we aim to have frank (or forthright or open) conversation on the best and deepest of scholarly work on the topics. Speakers include Vincent Lloyd, associate professor of theology and religious studies, Villanova University; Nazia Kazi, assistant professor of anthropology, Stockton University; and Sarah Sayeed, senior advisor, Community Affairs Unit, NYC Mayor’s Office.

Wednesday, October 19 A Multidisciplinary Middle Eastern and Central Asian Study Day

This one-day symposium features faculty of Hofstra’s Middle Eastern and Central Asian program discussing their current research. Speakers include Stefanie Nanes (political science), Mario Ruiz (history), Santiago Slabodsky (Jewish studies), Hussein Rashid (religious studies), Anna Feuerbach (anthropology), Aleksandr Naymark (art history), and Mustafa Masrur (applied linguistics). This symposium aims to make the Hofstra student body and the community in general aware of the rich resources for the study of the Middle East and Central Asia.

Thursday, October 20 On the Edge of Creation and Translation (Hispanic-American Writers and Scholars on Translation)

The launch of this symposium arises from a need and an interest in the study of the art of translation at a university. With 50 million people speaking Spanish in the United States, we are constantly conditioned by the ever-present need to resort to translation. Moreover, translation is an undeniable presence and is inherent in each of the areas of culture, science and all human knowledge. We start from the premise that translation is a critical and intellectual act that travels from translation to interpretation with respect to different objects of study (e.g., word, music, theater, and cinema). Speakers include Yusef Komunyakaa, Pulitzer Prize for Poetry; Alvaro Enrigue, Herralde Novel Prize; Madeline Millan, PEN-National Poetry Prize, PR; and Jeannette Clariond, National Poetry Prize, Mexico.

The Hofstra University School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) hosts the Mid-Atlantic Regional American Society for Engineering Education Conference. Issues of interest to engineering educators will be addressed in conference presentations and workshops over the two days. The keynote speaker is Dr. Joseph Sussman, chief accreditation officer for ABET, the agency that oversees accreditation for engineering programs worldwide.

Thursday, November 3 Traditions in Transition: Intangible Cultural Heritage in South and Southeast Asia

This symposium unites scholars from the disciplines of anthropology, ethnomusicology, folklore, theater and Asian studies to sacred traditions of South and Southeast Asia.

Through the participation in workshops given by scholar-practitioners, performances of a central Javanese Gamelan orchestra, Sundanese rod puppetry theater, Sikh religious hymns, academic lectures, and a one-day installation of an exhibit of puppets, costumes, instruments, and ethnographic photos of healing performances, participants in this symposium gain insight into complex performance forms and explore the paradoxical issues currently facing the traditional arts and their definition as intangible cultural heritage in South and Southeast Asia. UNESCO defines intangible cultural heritage as “the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge skills – as well as the instruments, objects artifacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage.”

Thursday, November 10 The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University and the Hofstra Cultural Center present Suburban Sustainability: A Symposium

One of the key questions facing society today is how can we survive the future given all of the problems we are facing such as global climate change, pollution, water scarcity, and environmental justice challenges. The suburbs are not often thought of as places where sustainable practices thrive. Yet, there are examples all over the United States where suburban communities are making great strides to improve not only the sustainability of their communities, but also of their region and the broader United States. This one-day symposium highlights these communities and practices. The symposium includes three panel discussions and a buffet lunch with a keynote address by Kris VanOrsdel from the NYS Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery. The day ends with a reception at the Hofstra University Museum, which is showcasing an exhibit on how Manhattan connects to suburban Long Island titled Over the River: Transforming Long Island. Speakers include a range of experts who are working on real-world solutions to sustainability challenges within the realm of environment, economic development, and social equity. During this election year, the symposium takes on greater significance as the suburbs play an important role in the future of our country.

Tuesday, November 29 Hofstra University School of Health Professions and Human Services, National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University and the Glen Cove Senior Center present Shifting the Perspective: Conference on Aging and Creativity

This daylong interdisciplinary conference embraces the changing face of what it means to grow older, with students and faculty, senior service providers, practitioners in the field of gerontology, older adults in the community, policy makers, and interested public linking aging and creativity. By comparing the characteristics of the aging brain to the creative brain, exploring the psychological impact aging has on creativity and creativity has on aging, highlighting models of creative aging and the success it demonstrates in sustaining vibrant communities, learning how other parts of the world view the connection and creativity of their elders, and by exploring the impact all this can have on investing in our aging communities, we strengthen our understanding of how imagination builds through time, we advance the opportunities and adventures for older adults to continue finding meaning in life, and we open up avenues of support for a population that can thrive intensely if given a chance.

SCIENCE NIGHT LIVE

Science Night Live is Hofstra University’s public lecture series that features exciting science research presented by some of the top scientists and lecturers in their fields. Science is becoming more important in everyday life, and these timely lectures will inspire and challenge us in unexpected ways.

Monday, September 19, 7 p.m.* Science, Policy, and Controversy

At every stage of research, scientists make decisions that can affect the outcomes of that research — from which questions to investigate, to how to interpret data.

Dr. Daniel J. Hicks examines how such decisions can become flashpoints for policy controversies, drawing from examples such as genetically modified foods and climate change.

This phenomenon creates serious challenges for the ideal of basing public policy on objective, universally accepted science. Dr. Hicks is philosopher of science, ethicist, and American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellow. Currently, he is hosted by the National Robotics Initiative at the National Science Foundation, where he is working on emerging ethical issues with self-driving cars. Dr. Hicks is broadly interested in public scientific controversies, and has written on a variety of issues, including genetically modified foods, vaccines, and obesity.

Tuesday, October 11, 4:30 p.m.* Bugs: Amazing, Beautiful, and Delicious!

We all know that insects occur in many shapes and colors, and they do many things to maintain our world: they pollinate plants, process animal waste, and provide food for a wide variety of species. Insects can also help save humanity by providing the most sustainable and nutritious food we could possibly eat. Admittedly, many people do have a problem with eating insects, but here’s your chance to get past all that. In this workshop, David Gracer discusses entomophagy, the consumption of insects as a viable food source for all of humanity. As an entomophagist, Mr. Gracer has studied many facets of this protean subject and solicits the input of experts and lay people wherever he goes. Mr. Gracer has appeared on The Colbert Report (where he ate a bug), TEDx Cambridge (where he fed people bugs) and, most recently, Migrations (where he was the edible insect expert). Mr. Gracer sees entomophagy as a matter of discourse and of the confluence/ conflict between science and human nature. He’ll talk about problems and solutions, and may eat an insect or two. Bring your appetite and an open mind. You’ll learn more that way!

Theater of War

Theater of War is an innovative public health project that presents readings of ancient Greek plays as a catalyst for town hall discussions about the challenges faced by service members, veterans, and their caregivers and families today.

Using Sophocles’ plays to forge a common vocabulary for openly discussing the impact of war on individuals, families, and communities, these readings are aimed at generating compassion and understanding between diverse audiences.

Each performance is followed by community panelist remarks and a facilitated town hall discussion.

The Aesthetic Brain With Dr. Anjan Chatterjee This event brings Dr. Anjan Chatterjee, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, to Hofstra to talk about his recent book The Aesthetic Brain: How We Evolved to Desire Beauty and Enjoy Art. Dr. Chatterjee discusses findings from cognitive neuroscience that reveal neural structures and networks engaged in our response to beauty and in other aesthetic encounters.

Wednesday, November 16, 11:15 a.m.-12:40 p.m. (Common Hour) The Emergent National Security Landscape: The New Strategic Polarization of the World President Obama’s national security strategy suggests that environmental factors represent a core foreign policy challenge, and indeed, the ongoing discourse regarding the potential security implications of climate change has promoted environmental security to the forefront of the global security agenda. As the president suggests, national security affairs may no longer be limited to traditional politico-military dynamics; but instead, climate, resources, and demographics may now be viewed as being equally important as traditional elements of national power. Nevertheless, linkages between violent conflict and environmental degradation are a matter of some controversy and continue to inspire a great deal of debate in academic and professional circles.

Debates concerning what to do about climate change – and whether to do anything at all – turn on six major questions: (1) Is it real? (2) Does it matter? (3) How much should we care about the future? (4) What can be done? (5) Who will pay?

(6) Do we need new politics? Philip Kitcher, John Dewey Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University, will explain these questions, and suggest answers to them. The lecture is drawn from a forthcoming book, co-authored with Evelyn Fox Keller, The Seasons Alter: How to Save Our Planet in Six Acts (W.W. Norton, 2017).

The United States as the World’s Police Force: Does It Have to Be This Way Forever?

The United States is on the cusp of a change in its approach to foreign policy. The primary threat in the world today is terrorism, not land wars between great powers, yet the global security infrastructure continues to be based upon Cold War-era conditions.

The documentary American Umpire, narrated by Jim Lehrer, takes a critical look at the U.S. role as the world’s police force. Through interviews with some of the most significant leaders in American foreign policy, including Condoleezza Rice, Madeleine Albright, George Shultz, and others, American Umpire explores our origins as a neutral nascent republic and our transition to a highly engaged superpower after World War II. American Umpire asks the important question, “What is the future of American geopolitical engagement in a rapidly changing world?”

A discussion with diplomatic historian Elizabeth Cobbs, whose book American Umpire is the basis for the documentary, follows the film screening.

The festival premieres each February, then “hits the road” with screenings across the United States and abroad. Notable institutions hosting The Black Maria Film Festival include the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Roxie Theatre in San Francisco and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). The Black Maria Film Festival Executive Director Jane Steuerwald will introduce the film festival at Hofstra.

Phillip Lopate has written four personal essay collections — Bachelorhood, Against Joie de Vivre, Portrait of My Body and Portrait Inside My Head; two novels, Confessions of Summer and The Rug Merchant; two poetry collections, The Eyes Don’t Always Want to Stay Open and The Daily Round; a memoir of his teaching experiences, Being With Children; a collection of his movie criticism, Totally Tenderly Tragically; an urbanist meditation, Waterfront: A Journey Around Manhattan; and a biographical monograph, Rudy Burckhardt: Photographer and Filmmaker. His most recent books are Two Marriages, Notes on Sontag, At the End of the Day: Selected Poems, and To Show and To Tell: The Craft of Literary Nonfiction.

Jhumpa Lahiri

Jhumpa Lahiri received the Pulitzer Prize in 2000 for Interpreter of Maladies, her debut story collection that explores issues of love and identity among immigrants and cultural transplants. Lahiri’s 2003 novel The Namesake expands on the perplexities of the immigrant experience and the search for identity and was published to great acclaim. Her book of short stories, Unaccustomed Earth, received the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award and The Lowland won the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature and was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Award in Fiction. Her most recent novel, In Other Words, explores the often emotionally fraught links between identity and language. In 2015 Lahiri was the recipient of the prestigious National Humanities Medal by the NEH at the White House.

Miguel-Angel Zapata and Álvaro Enrigue

This is the first event in Great Writers, Great Readings history for which two acclaimed authors are sharing the spotlight. Miguel-Angel Zapata, a professor of romance languages and literatures at Hofstra, is one of the most innovative poets of his generation in Peru and one of Latin America’s most influential poetic voices today. Among his most recent published works are the celebrated Hoy dia es otro mundo (Today is Another World), and La Nota 13 (Note 13). He was awarded the 2011 Latino Literature Prize in the Poetry Category for his book Fragmentos de una manzana y otros poemas (Fragments of an Apple and Other Poems), published by the Biblioteca Sibila/BBVA Foundation, one of the most prestigious publishers in Spain. Álvaro Enrigue was a Cullman Center Fellow and a Fellow at the Princeton University Program in Latin American Studies. He has taught at New York University, Princeton University, the University of Maryland, and Columbia University. His fifth novel (and first to be translated into English), Sudden Death, was published in early 2016 to high praise from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

Lia Purpura

Lia Purpura is the author of eight collections of essays, poems, and translations. Her awards include a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, NEA and Fulbright Fellowships, and three Pushcart prizes. On Looking (essays) was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her poems and essays appear in The New Yorker, The New Republic, Orion, The Paris Review, Field and elsewhere. She is writer-in-residence at the University of Maryland.

It Shouldn’t Have Been Beautiful, her new collection of poems, has recently been published by Viking/Penguin.

Carla Harris is vice chairman and managing director, Morgan Stanley, and chair, National Women’s Business Council. She was chair of the Morgan Stanley Foundation from 2005 to 2014, and sits on the boards of several community organizations. In August 2013 Ms. Harris was appointed by President Barack Obama to chair the National Women’s Business Council. She is a gospel recording artist and a popular public speaker who gives impactful career guidance to corporate audiences based on her book, Expect to Win. Ms. Harris joined Morgan Stanley after completing a BA in economics from Harvard University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

How do you translate queer into Spanish? How do you create culturally sensitive, bilingual, age-appropriate materials about Latinx gender and sexuality or LGBT experience?

Dr. Larry La Fountain-Stokes discusses his recent toy theater Enciclopedia Deiknumena publication titled A Brief and Transformative Account of Queer History/Un Breve y Transformador Relato de la Historia Queer, illustrated by Dave Buchen and published in Puerto Rico, in the context of other books on lesbian, gay, and transgender topics for young readers.

Dr. La Fountain-Stokes was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and teaches at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is the author of Queer Ricans: Cultures and Sexualities in the Diaspora, and of the short story collections Abolición del pato and Uñas pintadas de azul/Blue Fingernails. Dr. La Fountain-Stokes’ creative work also includes performances and a series of You Tube videos as Lola von Miramar, a Puerto Rican drag queen with a PhD who loves poetry and cooking.

Author and Activist: The Daniela Gioseffi Story

Prize-winning filmmaker Anton Evangelista presents his docu-drama portraying a life-affirming struggle to make art of civil rights, democratic equality and climate justice. Daniela Gioseffi is a pioneer of Italian American culture, recipient of an American Book Award and author of 16 books of prose and poetry. Her career was as a journalist in Selma, AL, during the Civil Rights Movement. She was among the first to integrate Deep South TV and was abused by the KKK for her activism. Ms. Gioseffi’s immigrant father, an inventor in the electronics industry, inspired her tenacity.

The ghetto of Venice was established in 1516 and existed until opened by the forces of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797. In defiance of its supposedly closed status, the Venetian ghetto was an important locus of learning, commerce and culture, not just for the Jews but for the larger Italian and European society as well. Typical of the paradoxical nature of the ghetto in Venice (and Italy in general), the Ghetto Nuovo (new ghetto) is older than the Ghetto Vecchio (old ghetto). Join us as we untangle these contradictions.

Jennifer Teege My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me: A Black Woman Discovers Her Family’s Nazi Past My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me is a book born of a shocking discovery for speaker Jennifer Teege. She picked up a book by chance at Hamburg’s main library and discovered that her grandfather was the brutal Nazi commandant of the Plaszow concentration camp, portrayed so memorably by Ralph Fiennes in the film Schindler’s List. Ms. Teege’s mother was German; her father was Nigerian. Raised in a loving home by her adopted German family, Ms. Teege struggled with depression as she coped with the trauma of rejection by her birth mother. She went to college in Israel, where she learned fluent Hebrew and earned degrees in Middle Eastern and African Studies. She later returned to Germany and now had to learn about her biological family’s secret from a book; and that a monstrous man, Amon Goeth, reviled for decades as “the butcher of Plaszow,” was her biological grandfather. After her emotional pilgrimage, Ms. Teege says, “I’m no longer a prisoner of the past. I know now that I am not to blame, and the guilt no longer weighs heavily on my shoulders. There is no Nazi gene: We can decide for ourselves who and what we want to be.”

September 6-December 16 Over the River: Transforming Long Island

This original exhibition features works in the Hofstra University Museum Collections by artists such as Marilyn Bridges, Louis Lozowick, and Andy Warhol, as well as works on loan from private collectors, other museums and artists.

The focus of the exhibition is the transformation of Long Island over the decades, brought about by the construction of bridges, tunnels and roadways that provide direct routes to New York City. Issues addressed include the planning and development of suburbia, the long-term impacts on the environment, and contemporary challenges. In addition to works of art, the exhibition includes planning documents and archival photographs on loan from the Special Collections Department of the Hofstra University Libraries.

Funding support has been provided by Astoria Bank, the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, and the New York State Council on the Arts.

Social media and technology have shaped the world dramatically over the past few years: how we work, how we socialize, how we advocate and understand the world around us. We look at social media in recruitment, hiring, performance management, as well as social media and work-family balance/stress, the delivery of news, the formation of public opinion, how we process information and understand issues.

Keynote speaker: Sherry Turkle, Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology, Program in Science, Technology, and Society, MIT.

Monday-Thursday, March 13-16 Creativity Week

This week will feature single session workshops that encourage students and faculty to engage creatively in the arts and humanities, writing, social sciences, the sciences, business, communication, health, and education. Faculty and students will be encouraged to host creativity workshops in a variety of disciplines. The week will feature interactive performances, displays of creative work, and active learning opportunities.

Thursday, April 6 Karl Marx’s Critique of Political Economy and the Global Crisis Today: On the 150th Anniversary of the Publication of Capital

Karl Marx was simultaneously one of the founders and one of the most important critics of the modern social sciences.

All of the social sciences and humanities today draw widely from his work. At the core of Marx’s published work is his analysis of capitalism: Volume one of Capital, published in 1867. This symposium will draw together leading scholars from all over the world who have been applying the Marxian analytical apparatus – including his labor theory of value – to decipher and understand the current global economic and political crisis. Confirmed Plenary Speakers: David Harvey, Distinguished Professor, The Graduate Center, CUNY and author of Limits to Capital, 1982; Silvia Federici, Professor Emerita, Hofstra University and author of Caliban and the Witch, 2004; and Harry Cleaver, Professor Emeritus, University of Texas at Austin and author of Reading Capital Politically,1979.

Tuesday, April 18 Earth Day COP21: Climate Change Science and Policy: One Year Later

On the one-year anniversary of the signing of the Paris accords on Earth Day 2016, we’ll consider what impact the agreement has had in changing public opinion and policy in the 195 signatory countries. Look at climate change through the lens of science, public discourse and communication. What are our individual and collective responsibilities to make change or create dialogue? How can governments and individuals take action?

How do economic systems and need, in both the developed and developing world, affect how we look at energy use and production?
