Directions to Hofstra By automobile, Hofstra can be reached easily by main east-west and north-south roads.

Of the parkways, Meadowbrook Parkway is closest; it runs north and south between the Southern State Parkway and Northern State Parkway. Leave Meadowbrook Parkway at exit M4 (Hempstead Turnpike); Hofstra is approximately 1.5 miles to the west.

Upon exiting Meadowbrook Parkway, follow directions below.

Mack Student Center, North Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at traffic light before second pedestrian bridge, entering North Campus. At second STOP sign, bear left and park. Walk into the Mack Student Center (building with bell tower). Upon entering doors, please follow signs to specific location.

Location B: Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater/David Filderman Gallery/ Rochelle and Irwin A. Lowenfeld Conference and Exhibition Hall, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn right at traffic light before second pedestrian bridge, entering North Campus. At second STOP sign, bear left and park. Walk into the Mack Student Center and continue straight ahead. Cross over pedestrian bridge to Axinn Library.

Location C: Toni and Martin Sosnoff Theater, John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus. Go past two STOP signs and park. Building on the left is the John Cranford Adams Playhouse (lions in front of building), which houses the Toni and Martin Sosnoff Theater.

Location D: Joan and Donald Schaeffer Black Box Theater, Joseph G. Shapiro Family Hall On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus.

Go past two STOP signs and park. Building on the right is the New Academic Building, which houses the Joan and Donald Schaeffer Black Box Theater.

Location E: Emily Lowe Gallery, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, travel under second pedestrian bridge and make a U-turn at the next traffic light. Proceed 70 feet and make the first right turn onto South Campus. Go past two STOP signs and park. The Emily Lowe Gallery of the Hofstra University Museum will be on your left. There are three visitor parking spaces directly in front of the Emily Lowe Gallery.

Location F: The Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus On Hempstead Turnpike, turn left at traffic light before second pedestrian bridge onto California Avenue. After first STOP sign, make first left into parking lot. Monroe Lecture Center faces California Avenue.

CONFERENCES AND SYMPOSIA Hofstra Cultural Center presents Thursday-Sunday, October 12-15 National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing Reaching Out: Revising Writing Center Spaces and Identities

The National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW) promotes the teaching of writing through collaborative learning. NCPTW professionals are leaders in collaborative approaches, responding to the challenges of creating and operating writing centers, developing innovative peer tutoring programs, and promoting the work of peer tutors. NCPTW offers peer tutors the opportunity to contribute in professional and scholarly ways to the larger writing center community. Our 2017 conference, “Reaching Out: Revising Writing Center Space and Identities,” invites writing center professionals to consider the various ways our centers connect with stakeholders on college campuses, in cyberspace, and through research. The conference promises to generate inquiry, conversation and debate about defining the spaces in which writing centers practice. Our keynote speakers for this conference will be Lauren Fitzgerald and Melissa Ianetta, authors of The Oxford Guide for Writing Tutors: Practice and Research.

Thursday and Friday, October 26 and 27 Culture and Identity Configurations: Reflections on the 21st Century* The symposium is an exceptional opportunity to bring together diverse perspectives and methodologies that are concerned with revealing and describing the intricacies and contradictions of contemporary identity discourses. An underlying methodological diversity is considered a prime requirement for addressing these complexities and contradictions, as ours is a time of increasing misapprehension among identity groups.

Researchers from a broad spectrum of disciplines will examine how identity is shaped, articulated and fostered in language, literature, religion, history, the arts, film, sociology, etc.

The symposium also invites contributions that examine the role of immigration in forging and transforming contemporary identities. The symposium will feature keynote speaker Mahmood Mamdani, distinguished professor, Columbia University, and will spotlight speaker Isabel Pascua Febles, Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.

Wednesday, November 1 Brutal Library: A Symposium

The Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library building was dedicated in 1967 and is an award-winning example of the Brutalist style architecture.

Our celebration of the library’s 50th anniversary will set the building in its historical, social and cultural context – generating understanding and appreciation for this iconic but challenging structure.

Peter Chadwick will deliver the keynote lecture and serve as scholar-in-residence for the symposium. He is a London-based art director and graphic designer. He studied at the Chelsea School of Art, then worked at Creation Records, where he designed for chart-topping bands such as Primal Scream and Spiritualized.

After setting up his own studio in 1996, Chadwick masterminded campaigns for major artists, including Groove Armada, Fatboy Slim, Cream and Hed Kandi. He runs the popular This Brutal House Twitter account (@BrutalHouse) and is a champion of Brutalist architecture the world over. His recent book This Brutal World (Phaidon, 2016) has been described as “a beautifully curated visual manifesto” for Brutalism.

Join Masha Gessen, Russian-American journalist and the author of several books, among them The Man Without a Face: The Unlikely Rise of Vladimir Putin, as she discusses U.S. and Russian Affairs.

Ms. Gessen is an expert on Vladimir Putin and the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Carnegie Fellowship, and her work has appeared in The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, Slate, Vanity Fair, and many other publications. Forthcoming, is Ms. Gessen’s new book, The Future Is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia.

GLOBAL JUDAISMS LECTURE III Between Israel and Argentina: Youth, Gender and Politics

Dr. Adriana Brodsky, president of the Latin American Jewish Studies Association and associate professor of history at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, explores the paths taken by young Argentine Jewish women and men as they navigate these politically charged times.

Youths who were active in Jewish communal institutions debated whether to participate in Argentine political youth groups. Most of them were training to eventually move to Israel, and many of these young Jews chose not to be apathetic to an existing political climate that increasingly viewed young people as agents of change.

An Evening With Naomi Klein

From the bestselling author of No is Not Enough and This Changes Everything, award-winning journalist and syndicated columnist Naomi Klein in her most recent book, No Is Not Enough, attempts to uncover how we got to this surreal political moment. It is also an attempt to predict how, under cover of shocks and crises, it could get a lot worse, and it’s a plan for how, if we keep our heads, we might just be able to flip the script and arrive at a radically better future. Ms. Klein will also address from her book, This Changes Everything, what we think you know about global warming and the real inconvenient truth that it’s not about carbon—it’s about capitalism.

Representatives from the Mohegan Tribe Council discuss an array of interesting topics related to business and Native American culture.

The first session, led by Kevin Brown, chairman of the Mohegan Tribe, expounds on the importance and difficulties of cultural awareness when marketing and conducting business overseas. The second session will be an interactive discussion led by Charlie Strickland, vice chairman of the Council of Elders, who will sing, drum, and tell stories of the Mohegan Tribe.

Named for the 19th century scientist who pioneered computational programming, Ada Lovelace Day is part of an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Our speaker, Cassia Martin is a senior security consultant with 10 years of professional experience in systems, security, and programming. She uses automated tools in combination with manual testing techniques to identify vulnerabilities in web and mobile software.

What Mathematics Can Tell Us About Cancer Dr. J.B. Nation, a leading specialist in universal algebra, has been involved over the past 10 years in interdisciplinary study of genetic data on cancer patients, with the bio-informatics group at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center and The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

Multiple factors determine the progress of a tumor. Some of these factors are the same across different types of cancer, while others are associated with only one or a few types of cancer. How can we identify those factors? The NIH has made available mRNA expression and other variables, along with clinical data for about 30 different cancers. New computer algorithms for analyzing expression data have allowed Dr. Nation to compare the genetic profiles of 15 different types of cancer from NIH data and identify the most significant factors in each one.

This is done from the mathematical properties of the expression table. Only afterward are the biological processes interpreted. Moreover, one can also gain information about possible treatments.

This project involved collaboration among mathematicians, statisticians, physicians, pathologists and computer scientists. As with the study of many other complex problems, progress in the treatment of cancer depends increasingly on interdisciplinary communication.

Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment In Black America James Forman Jr., former public defender, professor, and criminal justice reformer, Yale Law School

Based on his critically acclaimed book by the same name, this talk builds on Forman’s work as a public defender, a founder of a charter school for incarcerated teens, and a law professor to outline the criminal justice crisis with both data and human stories. He leaves the audience with hope for what can be done to make a difference, and how they themselves can contribute to change.

Climate Change and Globalization in Coastal Regions: Opportunities and Challenges for Building Resilience

Dr. Robin Leichenko’s research intersects the fields of economic geography and human dimensions of global environmental change.

Her work examines how and why processes of global economic and environmental change differentially affect cities, regions and sectors, and the implications of these processes for questions of vulnerability, equity, resilience and sustainability. Her book, Environmental Change and Globalization: Double Exposures (with Karen O’Brien, Oxford University Press, 2008) was awarded the 2009 Meridian Book Award for Outstanding Scholarly Work in Geography from the Association of American Geographers (AAG). Leichenko’s talk will examine interactions between climate change and globalization in coastal regions of the United States.

Book Presentation: A History of Infamy: Crime, Truth and Justice in Mexico

Pablo Piccato presents his new book, A History of Infamy, which explores the broken nexus between crime, justice and truth in mid-20th-century Mexico. Faced with the violence and impunity that defined politics, policing and the judicial system in postrevolutionary times, Mexicans sought truth and justice outside state institutions. During this period, criminal news and crime fiction flourished. As Piccato demonstrates, ordinary people in Mexico have made crime and punishment central concerns of the public sphere during the past century, and in doing so have shaped crime and violence in our times.

NAACP Workshop: REFLECTION

Hofstra’s chapter of NAACP will hold a series of workshops and a culminating “keynote conversation” to speak to the men and women of the Hofstra community, separately, about the difficulties each gender faces in the current racial climate. In our workshops, two speakers will give their unique perspectives on the gender divide in the black community and how to overcome and be successful through the different adversities each gender experiences. The culminating discussion will focus on the self-image of the black community and how we can come together to support one another to build a framework for change.

Lily King in Conversation with Grove Atlantic’s Elisabeth Schmitz

Lily King’s latest novel, Euphoria, won the Kirkus Award for Fiction and the New England Book Award for Fiction and was a finalist in the National Critics Circle Awards. Her first novel, The Pleasing Hour, won the Barnes & Noble Discover Award and was a New York Times Notable Book and an alternate for the PEN/Hemingway Award. Her second novel, The English Teacher, was a Publishers Weekly Top Ten Book of the Year, a Chicago Tribune Best Book of the Year, and the winner of the Maine Fiction Award. Her third, Father of the Rain, was a New York Times Editors’ Choice.

Elisabeth Schmitz is vice president and editorial director of Grove Atlantic. For more than 25 years, she has edited and published fiction, memoir and narrative nonfiction for Grove, including Euphoria by Lily King, Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier, Peace Like a River by Leif Enger, Man Gone Down by Michael Thomas, An Unnecessary Woman by Rabih Alameddine, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? by Jeanette Winterson, Say Her Name by Francisco Goldman, War Dances by Sherman Alexie, Pacific by Tom Drury, and H Is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald. Claudia Rankine

Claudia Rankine, a recipient of the MacArthur “Genius” Award, is the author of five poetry collections, including Citizen: An American Lyric and Don’t Let Me Be Lonely; two plays; video collaborations; and several anthologies. Rankine won many awards for Citizen, including the PEN Open Book Award and the PEN Literary Award, the NAACP Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry, and she was a finalist for the National Book Award. Citizen holds the distinction of being the only poetry book to be a New York Times bestseller in the nonfiction category. She teaches at Yale University as the Frederick Iseman Professor of Poetry.

John McPhee

John McPhee’s writing career began at Time magazine and led to his long association with The New Yorker, where he has been a staff writer since 1965. That same year he published his first book, A Sense of Where You Are, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. In the years since, he has written nearly 30 books, including Oranges, Coming into the Country, The Control of Nature, The Founding Fish, Uncommon Carriers, and Silk Parachute. Encounters with the Archdruid and The Curve of Binding Energy were nominated for National Book Awards in the category of science. McPhee received the Award in Literature from the Academy of Arts and Letters in 1977. In 1999 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction for Annals of the Former World.

THE GREAT WAR – A HUNDRED YEARS ON Join us for a continuation of events commemorating the anniversary of American engagement in World War I.

Thursday, September 28, 4:30 p.m.

Film Screening: Hearts of the World (1918)

This film sets out to tell the story of World War I with the greatest realism possible through the melding of warfare and melodrama, a narrative strategy D.W. Griffith had perfected in his extraordinary and controversial film work prior to this film. Yet Griffith’s unprecedented access to the battlefield did not ensure the film’s success, and considering the reasons for this may help us understand something of the nature of what was a new and terrifying form of war—and the inability of contemporaries, from politicians to soldiers, to grasp its true nature.

Film Screening: J’accuse (1919)

J’accuse, a French silent film directed by Abel Gance, juxtaposes a romantic drama with the background of the horrors of World War I. Work on the film began in 1918, and some scenes were filmed on actual battlefields. The film’s powerful depiction of wartime suffering, and particularly its climactic sequence of the “return of the dead,” made it an international success and confirmed Gance as one of the most important directors in Europe.

Sinkholes form all over the world, but there are some places where they form more than others. Why is there such a variation in sinkhole formation over time and space? Why do places like Brooklyn and Florida seem to get more sinkholes than other places? This lecture will review the formation of some of the most dramatic sinkholes on the planet—including some in our own backyard.

The laws of motion, energy, gravity, and entropy rule. Literally. They trump all other laws and inform all other activity. That’s what makes physics sexy. It is firmly in charge.”

Christine McKinley is a mechanical engineer, musician and author.

Her musical Gracie and the Atom won a Portland Drammy for Original Score. Her book, Physics for Rock Stars, was published in 2014 by Penguin Random House. McKinley hosted Brad Meltzer’s Decoded on History Channel and Under New York on Discovery Channel.

THE DEVIL IN NEW YORK — THE WITCHCRAFT TRIAL OF GOODY GARLICK, 4:30-6 p.m.

Celebrate Halloween as Tara Rider sheds light on the most famous American witch hunt, which began in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. Yet, more than three decades before that notorious event, Long Island had its very own witchcraft trial—the trial of Goody Garlick. Accusations of flying on poles and cavorting with the devil ran rampant in the colonies during the 17th-century and led to hundreds of accusations of witchcraft.

To understand what happened during these trials, we must first understand the stresses of ordinary 17th-century life in New York and why the fear of witches existed.

The trial of Goody Garlick acts as a lens to help us understand the hysteria associated with these accusations.

Frank Meeink: A Former Skinhead’s Fight Against Prejudice A violent South Philadelphia childhood made Frank Meeink easy prey for skinhead gang recruiters. By age 14, Frank had shaved his head and was a leader in the neo-Nazi movement hosting a cable access show called The Reich used for recruitment. While serving a sentence in an Illinois prison, he questioned his hatred in large part to his African-American teammates on a prison football league. After being paroled, Frank defected from the white supremacy movement.

Inspired by seeing a police officer holding a lifeless child in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, he pledged to stop the spread of hatred he himself once had and has appeared on behalf of the Anti-Defamation League, on MTV and other national networks.

Norman Solomon is an American journalist, media critic, author and activist. He wrote the nationally syndicated Media Beat weekly column from 1992 to 2009 and a documentary based on War Made Easy was released in 2007. During his time as a media critic, he founded the Institute for Public Accuracy based in Washington, D.C. Its goal is to encourage mainstream media to interview progressive scholars and policy analysts. He is also co-founder and coordinator of RootsAction.org, which has more than 1.5 million supporters.

THE DEFAMATION EXPERIENCE: When Race, Class, Religion and Gender Collide – A Conversation Begins A Play by Todd Logan Presented by Canamac Productions, the nationally acclaimed play Defamation is a riveting courtroom drama that explores the highly charged issues of race, religion, gender, class and the law with a twist: the audience is the jury. More than a play, Defamation is a unique opportunity for the community to engage in civil discourse about the most pressing social issues of our day. Through deliberations and post-show discussions, audiences engage in civil discourse that may challenge preconceived notions. Playwright Todd Logan says, “Whether we like it or not, we still have major divides in this country. Antigone is a humane and political play against oppression, and is regarded as the finest surviving drama of ancient Greek literature and the most complete, both structurally and in terms of dialogue. It deals with all the key elements of civilization – polis, demos, tyranny, law, hubris, discipline, anarchy – making it a timeless theatrical yet civil manifesto. Today, at a time when our fundamental principles are questioned, challenged and sometimes threatened, the exceptional dramatic structure and the sense of catharsis of the play evokes a contemporary hope against autocracy. How can Latin America make sense of gender and racial histories when these histories are often portrayed as having little connection with each other? This talk examines the history of transgender sex workers in Latin American countries by making connections between projects of racial mixing and projects of LGBT diversity, and between the neglect of an indigenous present and the neglect of a nonheterosexual past.

The Book Smugglers of the Vilna Ghetto

Historian David Fishman recounts one of the most amazing chapters of spiritual resistance in the Holocaust. A group of ghetto inmates risked their lives day in and day out for more than a year, to rescue thousands of rare Jewish books, manuscripts and documents from looting and destruction by the Germans. After World War II, the survivors dug up the cultural treasures hidden in bunkers and other places and smuggled many of them to America and Israel. Fishman has documented this remarkable event based on Jewish, German and Soviet sources in his new book, The Book Smugglers: Partisans, Poets, and the Race to Save Jewish Treasures from the Nazis.

How to Research and Document Your Family History: A Tale of Two Families

The vast majority of our Jewish ancestors came to the United States during one of two great migrations: German Jews during the period 1820-1880 and a larger migration of Eastern European Jews between 1880 and the early 1920s. Starting with information that you know about yourself and your immediate family, our goal is to discover our ancestors’ history both from the time our family came to the United States and back in the “old country.” Nolan Altman will discuss resources available to assist in trying to find information on family members who did not come to America or information that may have been lost during the Holocaust. Topics to be discussed include naming practices, vital records, passenger manifest records, Holocaust resources, and genealogy and your computer.

Edited by William J. Connell and Stanislao G. Pugliese The Routledge History of Italian Americans is a new, multi-authored history of one of the largest ethnic groups in America. The Hevreh Ensemble

The Hevreh Ensemble presents original compositions by group member and composer Jeff Adler on dozens of instruments from around the globe as a way to help promote cultural identity, exploration, spirituality, tolerance and world peace. The works include elements from classical, jazz and world music. Since its founding in 2004, Hevreh has toured throughout the United States and Europe, meeting with audience and critical acclaim for its passionate performances and inspiring programming. Recent highlights of the ensemble’s U.S. touring include performances at Hofstra University, Hudson River Museum, Museum of Tolerance New York, Newport Music Festival and Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, while a grant from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation allowed the group to tour Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley. Abroad, the ensemble has appeared in Austria (Vienna), the Czech Republic (Prague), Germany (Berlin, Bonn, Hamburg, Munich), the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and Poland (Krakow). For this performance, Hevreh is honored to welcome two distinguished guest artists: George Farmer, double bass, and Yousif Sheronick, percussion.

Exploring Giuseppe Verdi’s Enduring Legacy: Through Spoken Word, Music and Film Screening: In the Mouth of the Wolf (In Bocca al Lupo) Unseen for over 50 years August Ventura, author and filmmaker, explores the world of traditional opera in articles and lectures and through the medium of documentary film.

An ardent devotee of the life and works of Giuseppe Verdi, he has trained his sights on this “enduring legacy,” which, in the words of Verdi biographer Mary Jane Phillips-Matz, “remains a mighty force for continuing good.” To investigate how the composer’s 27 operas have served as an agent of social and political change, Ventura created an initiative he calls “27” The Verdi Documentary Film Project, with particular emphasis on the community of Parma, Italy – known for its fierce connection to the art form – where Verdi is rightly venerated.

This original exhibition of works by Andy Warhol, a major pop artist and art celebrity of the 20th century, includes a selection of his screenprints and photographs from the Hofstra University Museum Collections. By juxtaposing his photographs with his screenprints, the exhibition contextualizes and reveals his working methods and artistic process. As a participant in the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program since 2008, the Museum has received donations of 153 photographs (Polaroids and gelatin silver prints) and nine screenprints from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Inc.
