Fernando Operé (Madrid, Spain) is a Professor of Spanish, and Director of the Latin American Studies Program at the University of Virginia. He is the author of the following poetry books: Ciudades de tiza (2014); Refranero de dudas (2014); Around the World in 80 poems (2013); La vuelta al mundo en 80 poemas (2012); Cántico Segundo (2009); Anotado al margen. Cuaderno de ruta (2007); Memorial del olvido (2005); Poesía a dos voces (2004); Alfabeto de ausencias (2002); Salmos de la materia (2000); Amor a los cuerpos (1997); Acróbata de ternuras (1994); ¿Quién eres tú Betty Blue? (1991); Despedidas (1987); and Días de lluvia y otros soles (1987). He has also published the following books of history: Indian Captivity in Spanish America. Frontier Narratives (2008); España y los españoles de hoy (2007); Historias de la frontera. El cautiverio en la América hispánica (2001); Cautivos (1997); and Civilización y barbarie en la literatura argentina del siglo XIX (1987), as well as numerous articles on romanticism, modernism, captivity literature, poetry, frontiers, and historial novel.
