The Hofstra in Cuba Study Abroad program offers an academically rich experience that will result in new understandings and enduring insights – global and personal. Two Hofstra faculty members – an international communications specialist, researcher and journalist and a health care educator and program consultant – have teamed up to offer an integrated experiential opportunity that will provide interactive learning experiences, as well as a distinctive introduction and analysis of Cuba’s complex past, its changing present, and its promising future.

This program encompasses two primary areas of study and offers students a unique perspective on the culture, politics and people of Cuba, with the opportunity for service-oriented activities and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Based in Havana, students will settle in to a work/study routine that allows them to briefly become part of the community in which they will reside.

Tour through Old Havana Guided visit of the Museum of the Revolution Exposure to the syncretic Afro-Cuban religion of Santería Visit to the international film school founded by Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquéz Visits to Radio Havana and other major media installations Visits to health care facilities, including a community clinic, research center, as well as several geriatric care centers Opportunities to assist professional caregivers with patients and to engage in therapeutic recreational activites with older adults Weekend opportunities for students to take excursions to explore Havana and other parts of the Island on their own

Available Courses Students choose one of two three-credit courses:

• HPR 179: Health, Culture and Elder Care in Cuba (Major core elective) Graduate students are also welcome!

With prior arrangement, special provisions can be made to tailor a graduate-level course.

With prior arrangement, special provisions can be made to tailor a graduate-level course (LACS 215).

Application Information For an application, please visit hofstra.edu/studyabroad and click on “Study Abroad Applications” under the “Useful Resources” tab.

Download and complete the Hofstra in Cuba Program application and the four (4) necessary forms. Bring the completed application, necessary forms and $400 nonrefundable deposit to the Office of Study Abroad Programs, Room 107 Roosevelt Hall, South Campus,

by October 6, 2017.

Costs* The program fee is estimated at $3,550 per person. This covers: round-trip air travel from New York to Havana; 18 nights/19 days in single or double rooms in private residences; ground transportation; breakfast every day, dinner and lunch during the week and the first weekend of the trip when with the group; cultural programs; guest lectures by fully qualified faculty members of the University of Havana; 24/7 support from an onsite resident directior in Cuba; health insurance; Cuban entry visa, and more.

In addition to the program fee, participants pay standard Hofstra tuition and fees for one three-credit course. *Program fee quoted above is subject to change and based on the number of participants.

No prior knowledge of Spanish is required to enjoy the full benefits of this program. This program is limited to a maximum of 25 student participants.
