Courses Students can take one or both of the following courses*: LACS 015 (CC, IS): Journeys through Latin America: Introduction to Cultures and Histories of Central America, Prof. Brenda Elsey. This course introduces students to the history of Central America, with particular emphasis on Costa Rica.
Experience the wonder of Costa Rica in summer 2016! Hofstra faculty will offer two courses that explore the history and environment of a world treasure. Costa Rica’s biodiversity is among the most beautiful and complex in the world. The country has led the region in sustainability, environmental innovation and eco-tourism. Costa Rica is home to the United Nations University and has a fascinating history of democracy.
Program Description The Hofstra in Costa Rica program offers students an exciting opportunity to study the environment and history as a lived experience. Sustainability is a global challenge. Students will learn firsthand about the efforts to preserve Costa Rica’s unique natural resources while developing a thriving economy. They will also learn about the rich history of Costa Rica’s indigenous peoples, Spanish colonialism and independence. We will stay in the university town of Heredia, home to the National University of Costa Rica and Latin University. Students will take courses with Hofstra faculty at Latin University, along with trips to archives, museums, nature preserves and volcanoes.
We will stay with host families during the week. There, students can expect healthy meals and comfortable housing. Students will take Hofstra courses (in English) on-site at the university, which will provide them with a unique opportunity to experience college life abroad. On the weekends, professors will accompany students on enriching excursions to the rain forests, beaches and volcanoes of Costa Rica.

SBLY 104E: Sustainability Management and Practices in Latin America and the Caribbean, Prof. Sandra Garren. This course will provide students with an analysis of related sustainability issues including energy, climate change, water, natural lands, resource conservation, agriculture, transportation, environmental justice, and green entrepreneurialism. Graduate students are also welcome! With prior arrangement, special provisions can be made to tailor a graduate-level course (LACS 215). *There is also a possibility to enroll in a 3 credit LACS 100 internship, to be directed by one of the on-site faculty. Eligibility Students from Hofstra and other universities are encouraged to apply. Application Information For an application, please visit hofstra.edu/studyabroad and click on “Study Abroad Applications” under the “Useful Resources” tab. Download and complete the Hofstra in Costa Rica application and the four (4) necessary forms. Bring the completed application, necessary forms and $400 nonrefundable deposit receipt to the Office of Study Abroad Programs, 107 Roosevelt Hall, South Campus, by Monday, March 7, 2016. Costs* The program fee of $3,690 (based on 15 participants) covers: comfortable lodging; three meals every day throughout the trip; all ground transportation and entrance fees; multiple guided tours, excursions and cultural activities; 24/7 support from an on-site support staff; health insurance; and more. In addition to the program fee, all participants must register for at least one of the two three-credit Hofstra courses offered during the trip (LACS 015 or SBLY 104E) and pay the standard tuition and fees for the course. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required to enjoy the full benefits of this program. This program will be limited to a maximum of 25 student participants. *The program fee quoted above is subject to change.
