Hundreds of student volunteers took to the streets last fall to help neighbors in need, as part of the annual Shake A Rake community cleanup effort.

More than 440 residential and commuting students from groups such as athletics, club sports, fraternities and sororities, and student government worked in shifts on Saturday, November 17, 2018, to clean the yards of 55 homes of mostly elderly or disabled residents who live in the Hempstead and Uniondale communities surrounding campus.

They also cleared the 1.5-acre yard of the John J. Byrne Community Center in Uniondale, as well as the grounds of the Cameron Estates Garden in Hempstead.

“It is part of Hofstra’s mission to connect with our neighbors and lend a hand whenever we can,” said Anita Ellis, director of the Office of Commuting Student Services and Community Outreach, which sponsors the event.

“I’m so proud of the heart-and-soul commitment our student volunteers have made to this cause.”

The annual program has grown significantly since it began in 2009 – with 50 students volunteering at six houses.

Giving Families a Voice More than 50 organizations, businesses, and government agencies, including those that serve Hempstead and Uniondale, took part in Hofstra’s annual VOICE Day event. The daylong event last October featured workshops and a fair that helped connect community members with local groups and resources that are available to at-risk populations.

The VOICE Day community fair helped raise awareness of valuable resources available to Long Island’s families.

The 2018 theme, “Strong Family, Strong Community,” focused on the idea that a community benefits as a whole when its individual families are strong, said Dr. Andrea Nerlich, associate professor of counseling and mental health professions, who organized VOICE (Vision of Integration, Choice, and Equity) Day. Among the organizations that participated in the community fair were Hempstead Works, Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, FCA (Family and Children’s Association), Mental Health Association of Nassau County, Long Island Federally Qualified Health Center Inc., and Hofstra’s Counseling and Mental Health Clinic.

“Including these organizations is key to what we’re trying to accomplish,” Nerlich said. “It’s noble to want to change the world, but it’s vital to start local, with our neighbors. As a university, we need to be a responsive, legitimate partner in the care and progress of the communities that host us. These organizations are key stakeholders in furthering this mission.”

The community fair covered elder issues, special education for grades K-12, transition to adulthood, mental health awareness, and employment and self-sufficiency, among other topics.

“Our partnership with Hofstra’s VOICE Day represents the strong community relationships we have on Long Island to better serve individuals and families struggling with a host of hardships,” said Donna Teichner, of FCA. “It’s critical that those vulnerable and at risk know that they are not alone and that they can successfully access available services. Our role is to be a part of the solution to empower individuals and communities most in need.”

All Treats at This Parade Members of The Incredibles, a Transformer vehicle, Little Orphan Annie, Disney princesses, and heroes from the DC and Marvel universes took center stage at the Halloween parade hosted by the Diane Lindner-Goldberg Child Care Institute (CCI) at the Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center on Wednesday, October 31, 2018.

Every year, CCI hosts a Halloween party on the playground for the children and their picture-taking parents. CCI focuses on the child’s total development – social, emotional, cognitive, and physical. The program offers developmentally appropriate activities for children aged 8 weeks to 5 years, providing opportunities for hands-on, integrated learning. CCI has been reaccredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the leading organization of early childhood professionals. Cultural Commentators Visit Campus Hundreds of community members flocked to campus to hear talks by two high-profile guests last fall – author Ta-Nehisi Coates and activist the Rev. Dr. William Barber II. Coates, the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and the 2015 National Book Award for Between the World and Me, is a leading commentator on issues related to culture and identity in the United States. During his appearance at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse on September 20, 2018, just weeks before the midterm elections, he stressed the importance of voting as the first step to being a civically engaged citizen.

His 2017 book, We Were Eight Years in Power, features Coates’ iconic essays first published in The Atlantic, including “Fear of a Black President,” “The Case for Reparations,” and “The Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration,” along with eight fresh essays that revisit each year of the Obama administration through Coates’ own experiences, observations, and intellectual development. Coates also began writing for Marvel’s Black Panther series in 2016, and last summer, he debuted as the new writer on one of the most iconic characters in the Marvel Universe – Captain America.

In his talk, Barber urged 300 attendees to reject racial division and seek positive change, saying, “You don’t need to vote against Trump, you need to vote for better tomorrows.” The October 2, 2018, event commemorated the International Day of Non-Violence, held on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday to honor his commitment to change through nonviolent means.

The author of three books, Barber is the co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, which aims to renew Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s challenge to confront racism, militarism, and poverty. He is also president and senior lecturer of the nonprofit Repairers of the Breach, and currently sits on the national board of directors of the NAACP, after having served as president of the North Carolina NAACP, the largest state conference in the South, from 2006 to 2017.

Latin at the Library Elementary school students are improving reading skills while gaining a love for Latin and ancient literature at Uniondale Public Library, thanks to the efforts of two Hofstra students.

Seniors Isaac Hoffman and Julia Gurrola, who are both Classics majors, developed a fun and educational curriculum, activities, and games for students in grades K through 8 to enjoy once a week at the library. The program is part of Aequora, a national outreach program sponsored by the Paideia Institute, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to promoting the study and appreciation of the classical humanities, with a focus on Latin and ancient Greek languages and literature. The effort promotes literacy, cultural understanding, and equity in education.

“While you are reading Latin, everything feels like a puzzle,” said Hoffman. “You are fitting words together and piecing out a story using the grammatical rules that you know. That’s one of the attractions for a lot of people, myself included.”

Two Hofstra students are helping local schoolchildren gain a love for Latin and ancient literature at Uniondale Public Library.

Slam-Dunk Community Service Members of Hofstra’s Department of Athletics took part in many community service projects last fall, from helping at the Long Island Children’s Museum to participating in cancer fundraisers and offering skills programs at local schools. Student-athletes and coaches from the women’s basketball team, in particular, held two-hour clinics at Northern Parkway Elementary School in Uniondale and David Paterson Elementary School in Hempstead, where they taught drills and stretching exercises and answered questions about what it’s like to play college sports.

Inspiring Young Minds Every year, Hofstra Regional Scholars programs bring hundreds of middle and high school students, including students from schools in Hempstead and Uniondale, to campus to explore new interests in subjects ranging from math and science to journalism, film, history, and literature.

Students get an opportunity to interact with Hofstra professors, college students, and special guests to gain an understanding of college-level work expectations and professional life. At the 2018 High School Student Press Day, for example, students from 14 high schools came to campus to get a closer look at media careers as they met some of the region’s leading reporters and editors and attended panels and workshops on photojournalism, investigative journalism, sports reporting, and public relations.

Other Hofstra Regional Scholars programs include the High School Summer Journalism Institute, Model United Nations, Future Business Leaders of America, High School Shakespeare Day, Dance Day, Ethics Bowl, History Day, Youth Film Day, Summer Science Research Program, and Ladder to Leadership, which connects young women from Uniondale High School with mentors at Hofstra’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business.

Hempstead’s Future Doctors Eighth and ninth grade students from the Hempstead School District celebrated the completion of the Medical Science Youth Program (MSYP), established by the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, with a closing ceremony held on December 1, 2018. Now in its second year, the MSYP exists to enhance academic success for underserved youth and foster an interest in a career in medicine.

Zucker School of Medicine third-year student Elizabeth Lynch and second-year student Marcel Souffrant created the program.

During a rigorous two-month curriculum, 30 students from Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School and Hempstead High School were introduced to the Zucker School and formed relationships with medical students. These relationships exposed program participants to the demanding yet rewarding path toward a future in health care. While in the MSYP, students learn mindfulness, reflection, and presentation skills, and tackle topics such as basic physiology, wellness, nutrition, self-esteem, hygiene, and professionalism.

TED Fellow Mitchell S. Jackson grew up in a neglected neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, in the crime-addled 1990s, where Photo by John Richard. his life and the lives of those around him were shadowed by the crack epidemic. With his critically-acclaimed debut novel, The Residue Years, Jackson channels his experiences – including time in prison for selling drugs – into eloquent prose that lays bare his heartbreaking but ultimately hopeful story. Jackson is also the author of Survival Math: Notes on an All-American Family, due out in March 2019.

This hybrid work – part essay, part memoir, part history – uses stories of Jackson’s family and friends to speak to larger issues in American culture, including the racial history of Oregon, whiteness in America, the prison system, drug addiction, criminality, sex work, violence, and broken families.

Born in London in 1971, Zingonia Zingone is a graduate in Photo by Sally Prissert. economics, a poet, a novelist, and a translator who writes in Spanish, Italian, French, and English.

Her poetry books are published in Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Italy, France, and India. Her most recent titles are Los naufragios del desierto (Vaso Roto, 2013) and Las tentaciones de la Luz (anamá, 2018). In English, she has two books published in India: Acrobat of Oblivion (Poetrywala, 2011) and Light, the Temptation (Poetrywala, 2016). Her translation works include the awardwinning Voces/Voci by Nicaraguan poet Claribel Alegría (Samuele Editore, 2016). She is editor of a monthly poetry review at Minerva magazine.

Acclaimed for his combination of “visionary scope” (Gettysburg Review) and “emotional Photo by Katherine Baker. intensity” (Georgia Review), David Baker is one of contemporary poetry’s most gifted lyric poets. In Swift, he gathers poems from eight collections, including his masterful latest, Scavenger Loop (2015); the prize-winning, intimate travelogues of Never-Ending Birds (2009); and the complications of history and home in Changeable Thunder (2001). Opening the volume are 15 new poems that continue Baker’s growth in form and voice as he investigates the death of parents, the loss of homeland, and a widening natural history, not only of his beloved Midwest but of the tropical flora and fauna of a Caribbean island.

Pushing Boundaries: American Art After World War II January 29-August 16 In the aftermath of World War II, artists in America continued explorations begun earlier in the 20th century, pushing the boundaries of accepted subject matter and artistic form. Drawn from the Museum’s collection, including works by Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Robert Rauschenberg, Stanley Twardowicz, and Andy Warhol, this exhibition illuminates the great diversity of art in postwar America. Additionally, a selection of paintings by artist/poet and Holocaust survivor Yonia Fain are highlighted.

Japanese woodblock prints have served as the inspiration for numerous artists from the 19th century to today. The core of the exhibition is drawn from the Museum’s collection of more than 60 historical woodblock prints, primarily from the 19th century (Edo period), that focus on themes of landscape, nature, courtesans, and Kabuki actors. The exhibition also includes examples of contemporary woodblock printmaking and Manga (Japanese comics).

Look, listen, and create together! Bring your child to the Museum to look at and discuss art and then engage in a hands-on art project. Children and their adult companions uncover clues to help solve an Art Caper mystery in the outdoor sculpture collection on Hofstra University’s South Campus.

Scott Skodnek Business Development Center (BDC) PROGRAMS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES The Scott Skodnek Business Development Center (BDC) offers programs and services to promote economic development and job creation for the Hofstra community, Long Island, and the region. The BDC’s focus is to provide resources, training, and development for businesses. For example, the Entrepreneurial Assistance Program (EAP), sponsored by a grant from Empire State Development, is a 60-hour training program that provides participants with “nuts and bolts” skills to start and expand businesses, determine the feasibility of a venture, and develop a business plan. Capital One Bank sponsors a competition that awards cash prizes ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 to participants submitting a winning business plan and presenting a business pitch at a Shark Tank-like event. The program is offered twice a year beginning in March and October.

The BDC provides assistance completing, submitting, and expediting the processing of applications for New York State Minority/Women-Owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) certification. Receiving M/WBE certification can increase procurement and contract opportunities with state agencies.

If you are a minority or a woman who owns a business that has been in operation for at least one year, you may qualify to apply for M/WBE certification.

Deane School of Law Clinical Studies Program has 11 clinics: Asylum Clinic; Community and Economic Development Clinic; Criminal Justice Clinic; Deportation Defense Clinic; Entrepreneurship and Intellectual Property Clinic; Federal Tax Clinic; Immigration Clinic; Juvenile Justice Clinic; Law Reform Advocacy Clinic; Robert W. Entenmann Veterans Law Clinic; and Youth Advocacy Clinic. These clinics offer free legal assistance to clients who meet certain financial eligibility requirements. Hofstra Law will host a free Veterans Legal Clinic on March 31, 2019.

The clinic is open to all veterans and offers a free consultation with attorneys who specialize in VA benefits and claims, family law, Social Security disability, employment, USERRA, housing, bankruptcy, debtor/creditor matters, landlordtenant disputes, elder law, wills, estates, Medicare and Medicaid, and more. This is the 10th one-day clinic organized by the Veterans Legal Assistance Project (VLAP).

To date, VLAP has provided more than 350 military veterans with free legal services. More than 30 Hofstra Law students assist attorneys during each clinic.

Calling All Entrepreneurs Hofstra University launched the Healthcare Entrepreneurship Community Challenge last fall, thanks to a federal grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. The challenge inspires entrepreneurs to develop real-world solutions to improve health care in underserved communities on Long Island, in New York City, and in the Hudson Valley region, with the goal of improving patient satisfaction, enhancing quality and safety, lowering health care costs, and advancing population health.

The 2018 challenge topic was “Empowering Patients and Communities,� focused on bringing patients to the center of their own care, and offered $25,000 in total prize money. Over 100 applicants across the nation presented products and services that reimagined relationships between patients, communities, Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz with Elnaz and health care providers. The challenge connected qualifying Sarabchian, first place winner of entrepreneurs with communities to test and develop their products, and they the Healthcare Entrepreneurship received mentoring, participated in a boot camp, and showcased their innovations at Community Challenge. a regional symposium and pitch competition in October. The winners of the pitch competition were all New York-based companies, with the first place prize awarded to Elnaz Sarabchian, CEO and co-founder of MedAux, a startup that uses text messaging to improve communication between patients and health care providers.

Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center The Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center provides services to the community at large and Hofstra employees, while supporting high-quality educational and practical experiences for Hofstra students. The Saltzman Center unites the services of several facilities on the Hofstra campus.

Counseling and Mental Health Professions Clinic: This clinic offers individual, couple, and family counseling; rehabilitation counseling; and creative arts therapy counseling, which uses art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, and foster self-awareness. The clinic also offers psychoeducational groups that focus on issues such as the impact of divorce on adults and children, parenting skills, self-esteem, and caring for caregivers. It also provides vocational assessments and counseling for people in transition and/or with special needs.

The clinic staff is available to provide on-site workshops for schools and community service agencies.

Spring 2019 registration is currently underway for groups such as: • Teen Talk and Tween Talk • Divorce Support • Children’s Self-Esteem • Care for Caregivers • Effective Parenting Psychological Evaluation and Research Clinic: This clinic houses several smaller clinics that counsel patients in the treatment of phobias such as flying and public speaking, diagnosis of and treatment for autism spectrum disorders, and child and parent psychotherapy.

Reading/Writing Learning Clinic: This clinic is dedicated to providing literacy support to children and youth in a safe and supportive environment. Each class incorporates students’ experiences with literacy in innovative ways to help them develop their strengths and identities as readers and writers. The clinic is committed to valuing students’ linguistic and cultural lives, which allows them to take risks and gain confidence as they move toward developing mature control of literacy skills. All classes are taught by New York state-certified teachers. Personalized consultations offer parents straightforward advice about how to support their child’s literacy growth. Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic: This clinic offers diagnostic and treatment services for children and adults for a variety of communication disorders, including language, articulation and voice therapy, treatment of stuttering, myofunctional disorders, and cognitive communication disorders. Audiological services include evaluations, hearing aid fitting and dispensing, central auditory processing evaluations, and aural rehabilitation.

Specialty clinics for toddlers and people with aphasia, as well as language-literacy support programs at a local elementary school, are ongoing. Social-communication groups for people with dementia are held at community skilled nursing facilities.

Services for foreign accent modification and social pragmatic language groups are also available. All clinical services are supervised by professional speech-language pathologists and audiologists who hold certification from the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association.

The cost of services offered by the Saltzman Center clinics is a fraction of the cost of private treatment.

Diane Lindner-Goldberg Child Care Institute (CCI): New York state-licensed and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), CCI offers a year-round, full-day early childhood educational program for infants to 5-year-olds, providing opportunities for ageappropriate, hands-on, integrated learning. Two-, three-, and five-day programs are available for toddlers and preschoolers.

Staff-to-child ratios exceed those required by New York state licensing and NAEYC standards for excellence in care. CCI has been designated a 2016-2019 Breastfeeding-Friendly Child Care Center by the New York State Department of Health’s Child and Adult Care Food Program. Families may be eligible for subsidized child care through the Nassau County Department of Social Services Day Care Unit. Private scholarships may be available for families meeting eligibility guidelines.
