Hofstra Hosts 2016 Presidential Debate

Hundreds of community members joined students, faculty and staff on campus as Hofstra University hosted the first presidential debate between candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton on September 26, 2016. The University hosted two public watch parties where local residents and other visitors could view the debate, as well as more than 25 free public events in the two weeks before the debate. The events included lectures, panel discussions, film screenings and workshops on topics ranging from race relations and foreign policy to public education and infrastructure. Speakers included prominent scholars, journalists and political figures such as Democratic strategist and former chief White House advisor David Axelrod, former governor of Louisiana and Republican presidential candidate Bobby Jindal, CNN political commentator Sally Kohn, and Georgetown University sociology professor and author Michael Eric Dyson. Students from more than a dozen Long Island high schools, including Hempstead High School and Uniondale High School,

also participated in a full day of special programming that included a media panel, historical performances, a live ABC News broadcast and debate viewing. In addition to providing students with a once-in-a-lifetime educational experience, debate programming allowed community members to be directly involved in the democratic process and provided an in-depth look at the most pressing issues in this election cycle. Hofstra University previously hosted presidential debates in 2008 between then-Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain and in 2012 between then-President Obama and Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts. Hofstra is the only university to ever host three consecutive presidential debates, and its 2016 debate was the most watched debate in American television history.
