Hofstra University and the Center for Hearing Health in Mill Neck partnered to provide free hearing tests for students at Joseph A. McNeil Elementary School in Hempstead.

Hempstead Students Get Hearing Help Children at the Joseph A. McNeil Elementary School in Hempstead received free hearing tests from students in the Long Island AuD (Doctor of Audiology) Consortium, a part of Hofstra’s Department of Speech-LanguageHearing Sciences.

Undetected hearing deficiencies in children can negatively affect their academic and social development, and many of the school’s 800 students were in need of the tests, according to school nurse Ezra Cooper.

“There are so many stressors on our student population in their environment, so any extra stress in the classroom from a hearing deficiency needs to be identified and corrected,” Cooper said. “So when a professional group like this comes in, it helps a lot.”

Hofstra conducted the hearing tests in partnership with the Center for Hearing Health in Mill Neck, which provided a van with mobile hearing services that can do advanced diagnostic testing if a child does not pass an initial screening. The center is a training site for many audiology students, who participate in externship opportunities there.

The hearing tests at the Hempstead school were part of the AuD program’s commitment to helping underserved communities, both locally and globally, said Dr. Ianthe Murad, the program’s clinical coordinator and adjunct assistant professor in the Department of SpeechLanguage-Hearing Sciences. The AuD students fundraised throughout the year to help cover the costs of the screenings, which were held on March 16 and 23.

CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY NEWS The 2018 Unispan Award honorees.

Honoring Local Leaders The 44th annual Hempstead for Hofstra/Hofstra for Hempstead Scholarship Dinner, held April 12, honored eight individuals with long records of community service.

The annual event celebrates a tradition that began more than four decades ago when a group of volunteers met to raise funds for promising students from the Village of Hempstead to attend Hofstra University. Since its founding, hundreds of young men and women have benefited from these scholarships.

The evening included the annual presentation of the prestigious Unispan Award to individuals whose professional or personal lives have enriched the Hempstead community. The award is named for the original pedestrian bridge over Hempstead Turnpike that unites Hofstra’s north and south campuses, and symbolizes the close ties between the University and the Village of Hempstead.

This year’s Unispan Award was presented to the following honorees: • Paul R. Delle ’80, ’87 – Hempstead Village Justice • Michael Higgins – Guidance Counselor, Hempstead High School • Michael Holley and Sheryl Roberts – Community Police Officers, Hempstead Police Department • Robert C. Jackson Jr. – President, Bojack40 • Soh Young Lee-Segredo – Bilingual Spanish Teacher, Hempstead Union Free School District • Valerie McFadden-Walker – Supervisor for Discipline/Teaching Assistant, Uniondale Union Free School District Additionally, Alan B. Hodish, Esq., of the Law Offices of Alan B. Hodish, received the Tyree Curry Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognizes an individual for exceptional contributions, distinguished service, and spirit of volunteerism within the Hempstead community.

Mentoring State of Mind Hofstra University students volunteered as mentors for children at Barack Obama Elementary School in Hempstead, as part of the New York State Mentoring Program. Every Friday from October to May, the mentors worked one-on-one with students on team-building exercises, played board games, and discussed topics of interest to encourage healthy, open communication.

“The Hofstra mentors were engaged, positive, and supportive, and the students were happy to see them arrive each week,” said Diane Urso, regional coordinator for the New York State Mentoring Program.

“The team from Hofstra volunteered to work with students because they believed that they could help them grow, succeed, and thrive. They helped their mentees to be more confident and enabled them to better handle the many stressors of life/school.” A school faculty member is always present, and all mentors in the program attend a training session and have background checks.

The New York State Mentoring Program was started in 1984 by Matilda Raffa Cuomo, at the request of her husband, then Gov. Mario Cuomo.

The initiative was the nation’s first statewide school-based, one-to-one mentoring program aimed at preventing school dropout. The program ended in 1995, but was reinstated in 2015 by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, with his mother, Matilda Cuomo, once again at the helm.

Teaming Up With the Community Members of Hofstra’s Department of Athletics participated in many hours of community service during the spring semester, serving at schools and soup kitchens and hosting events on campus.

On March 2, 18 members of the field hockey team went to California Avenue Elementary School in Uniondale, where they read to students in several classrooms in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. After each reading session, the studentathletes also worked with each class on Dr. Seuss activities, such as coloring and puzzles.

The women’s basketball team, including nine studentathletes and members of the coaching staff, held a clinic at David Paterson Elementary School in Hempstead on April 27. About 75 boys and girls attended the clinic, where they practiced drills and stretching. The team also held a panel where they answered students’ questions about being a student-athlete.

Saving Mothers and Babies The Birth Justice Warriors gathered recently at Hofstra University for a training session.

A new initiative called the Birth Justice Warriors, a partnership between Hofstra University and the North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center, aims to raise awareness of the dramatically high black infant and maternal mortality rates in Nassau County and advocate for better education and medical care.

A black woman is almost four times more likely to die in childbirth than a white woman in the United States, and locally, in Nassau County, a baby born to a black mother is four times more likely to die before their first birthday than a baby born to a white mother, according to health statistics.

“Most people would never think that such startling disparities happen in affluent areas such as Nassau County, and the lack of awareness harms the most vulnerable members of our communities – pregnant women and infants,” said Martine Hackett, PhD, assistant professor of health professions at Hofstra University, who co-directs Birth Justice Warriors with Nellie Taylor-Walthrust, ThD,

of the North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center.

“This is now a watershed moment to address the inequities, particularly on a clinical level, by getting medical providers to offer respectful and culturally competent care for black women.”

As part of the program, about 20 women from numerous communities, including Hempstead, Roosevelt, and Westbury-New Cassel, where birth disparity rates are particularly high, will volunteer their time to visit hospitals, churches, clinics, and other community spaces to educate young women about steps they can take to improve health outcomes for themselves and their babies, such as ensuring good nutrition and prenatal care.

Sharelle Allen, who is training to be a doula, said she wanted to be part of the Birth Justice Warriors because of her own birthing experience. “I want to be sure women have the power, information, and resources to make informed decisions,” she said. “I want to be a resource in my communities – I live in Roosevelt and I work in Uniondale – and let women know they matter.”

The initiative is funded by Hofstra’s National Center for Suburban Studies Diversity Grant as well as the March of Dimes.

Promoting Good Health Hofstra’s annual National Public Health Week event series brings together faculty, local and national policy experts, health care professionals, community organizations, local residents, and students to learn about, discuss, and find solutions to critical health issues.

During the event series this year, which took place from April 2 through 8, participants examined several contemporary public health issues, including using entrepreneurship to solve community health issues, improving the mind/body connection of those with autism, identifying the physical and emotional needs of transgender individuals, and understanding the rapid rise of mergers and partnerships in the U.S. health care industry. The event series also included a fitness challenge, an interactive exhibit on gun violence prevention, a student film competition on summer safety, a public health fair, and a panel on careers in public health.

Over the past few years, hundreds of local high school students from Roosevelt, Uniondale, Westbury, and other towns have come to Hofstra to participate in the health fair, which offers exercise and food demonstrations, free dental and blood pressure screenings, and the opportunity to talk to representatives from local health organizations.

Career Boost With the help of Hofstra University students, the Greater Uniondale Area Action Coalition (GUAAC) hosted the grand opening of a workforce development storefront on May 5 that will cater to the needs of Uniondale job seekers.

Over the course of the spring semester, undergraduate students in Dr. Yvonne Teems’ Writing for Advocacy course helped create forms and flyers to help promote the site, and also organized and led a workshop where they provided instruction on searching for jobs online and writing resumes.

“We’re hoping these efforts will make an impact in the lives of our residents and we’re grateful for the students’ help,” said Jeannine Maynard, GUAAC co-facilitator and community organizer. “They’ve brainstormed ideas, shown out-of-the-box thinking, were open to our feedback, and offered tons of manpower that has saved us so much time.”

The Greater Uniondale Area Action Coalition is an umbrella group for 30 local organizations with a combined membership of over 30,000 individuals who engage in grassroots advocacy. It is also a community partner of Hofstra’s Center for Civic Engagement.

Curb Appeal Hofstra’s second annual “Pride, Paint, and Plant” community service project recruited more than 150 student volunteers on April 14 to paint fences and plant flowers at the homes of 25 senior citizens living in the Hempstead and Uniondale neighborhoods surrounding Hofstra. The supplies used to freshen up the yards were donated by the University and local businesses.

Model Leaders Students from Uniondale High School, led by their teacher Charles Picone, a 2013 Hofstra University political science graduate, were among several hundred participants from more than a dozen high schools in this year’s Model UN program. The popular annual conference creates simulations that allow students to come together and discuss current global and political issues. In particular, students hone their debate skills as they gain knowledge about the international political agenda.

Inspiring Young Filmmakers More than 100 teens attended the inaugural Youth Film Day on campus March 3, where they explored film and television careers in directing, producing, editing, writing, and acting. The free all-day event was a partnership between Hofstra University and Gold Coast International Film Festival.

Students in grades 7 to 12 participated in hands-on filmmaking workshops on cinematography, drones and sliders, script and film critique, sound design, special FX makeup, stunt coordination, and fight choreography, led by industry professionals, including Hofstra faculty and Gold Coast International Film Festival staff and board members. They also toured the fully HD-equipped learning environment of Hofstra’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, and attended screenings and panels.

Both Model UN and Youth Film Day are part of Hofstra’s Regional Scholars program.

The initiative enables talented middle school and high school students to explore new academic interests with scholars and college students as mentors, to spend a day or two on a college campus, and to gain an understanding of what collegiate-level work entails. Other programs include Ladder to Leadership, High School Student Press Day, History Day, Ethics Bowl, Summer Science Research Program, and the Middle School Honors Band Festival.

THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE In 1989, the rape and beating of a white female jogger in Central Park made international headlines.

Many accounts reported the incident as an example of “wilding” – episodes of poor, minority youths roaming the streets looking for trouble. Police intent on immediate justice for the victim coerced five African-American and Latino boys to plead guilty. The teenage boys were quickly convicted and imprisoned.

Natalie P. Byfield, PhD, who covered the case for the New York Daily News, revisits the story of the Central Park Five from her perspective as a black female reporter in the book Savage Portrayals.

He got his start writing on several network series before joining Fox’s Family Guy, where he was on the original writing staff and went on to pen many memorable episodes featuring Brian and Stewie. Daniel Mendelsohn Daniel Mendelsohn is an internationally best-selling author, award-winning critic and essayist, and columnist for Harper’s. He began his career in journalism in 1991, contributing to publications such as The Village Voice and The Nation while completing a PhD in classics at Princeton. Since then, his translations, reviews, and essays on books, movies, theater, and television have appeared regularly in numerous national publications, most frequently The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and The New York Times. Mendelsohn is the author of seven books. The Elusive Embrace (1999), a memoir of family history and sexual identity twined around meditations on classical texts, was a New York Times Notable Book of 1999 and a Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year. His first collection of essays, How Beautiful It Is and How Easily It Can Be Broken (2008), was a Publishers Weekly Best photo by Matt Mendelsohn Book of the Year. By Barbara Hammond; directed by Mahayana Landowne In February 2012, five young women walked into a church in the center of Moscow and offered up a punk prayer: “Virgin Mary, chase Putin away!” The young activists, who call themselves Pussy Riot, played and shouted for exactly 48 seconds before being dragged out of the church by security guards and sent home. After posting the performance on YouTube, the girls were arrested, tried, and sent to labor camps for hooliganism and inciting religious hatred.

But, the media couldn’t be quieted and turned Pussy Riot into the greatest piece of performance art in Russian history. This is their story.

Changing Perceptions: World War I and the Visual Arts Tuesday, September 4Friday, December 14, 2018 World War I changed the perception of war from a heroic and romanticized point of view to the horrific reality of combat. The perception of what art was and could be was also transformed. This exhibition provides a glimpse into the artistic worlds of France, Germany, and Russia following World War I and examines a selection of the vast activities happening in the visual arts during that time period. The exhibition highlights permanent collection works, including paintings, prints, and photographs, along with works of art loaned from other museums and galleries.

This exhibition is offered in association with the Artistic Expressions and The Great War: A Hundred Years On conference to be held at Hofstra University on November 7-9, 2018.

Funding has been provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

This exhibition features photographs spanning more than 50 years by three artists, Danny Lyon (American, born 1942), Jessica Earnshaw (Canadian, born 1983), and Isadora Kosofsky (American, born 1993), highlighting the varied critical issues within the prison system in America.

Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center The Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center provides services to the community at large and Hofstra employees, while supporting high-quality educational and practical experiences for Hofstra students. The Saltzman Center unites the services of several facilities on the Hofstra campus.

Counseling and Mental Health Professions Clinic: This clinic offers individual, couples, and family counseling; rehabilitation counseling; and creative arts therapy, which uses art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, and foster self-awareness. The clinic also offers psychoeducational groups focusing on issues such as the impact of divorce on adults and children, parenting skills, self-esteem, and caring for caregivers.

It also provides vocational assessments and counseling for people in transition and/or with special needs. The clinic staff is available to provide on-site workshops for schools and community service agencies.

Fall 2018 registration is currently underway for groups such as: • Teen Talk and Tween Talk • Divorce Support • Children’s Self-Esteem • Care for Caregivers • Effective Parenting Psychological Evaluation and Research Clinic: This clinic houses several smaller clinics that counsel patients in the treatment of phobias such as flying and public speaking, diagnosis of and treatment for autism spectrum disorders, and child and parent psychotherapy.

Reading/Writing Learning Clinic: This clinic is dedicated to providing literacy support to children and youth in a safe and supportive environment. Each class incorporates students’ experiences with literacy in innovative ways to help them develop their strengths and identities as readers and writers. The clinic is committed to valuing students’ linguistic and cultural lives, which allows them to take risks and gain confidence as they move toward developing mature control of literacy skills. All classes are taught by New York state-certified teachers. Personalized consultations offer parents straightforward advice about how to support their child’s literacy growth. Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic: This clinic offers diagnostic and treatment services for children and adults for a variety of communication disorders, including language, articulation and voice therapy, treatment of stuttering, myofunctional disorders, and cognitive communication disorders. Audiological services include evaluations, hearing aid fitting and dispensing, central auditory processing evaluations, and aural rehabilitation.

Specialty clinics for toddlers and people with aphasia, as well as language-literacy support programs at a local elementary school, are ongoing. Social-communication groups for people with dementia are held at community skilled nursing facilities.

Services for foreign accent modification and social pragmatic language groups are also available. All clinical services are supervised by professional speech-language pathologists and audiologists who hold certification from the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association.

The cost of services offered by the Saltzman Center clinics is a fraction of the cost of private treatment.

Diane Lindner-Goldberg Child Care Institute (CCI): New York state-licensed and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), CCI offers a year-round, full-day early childhood educational program for infants to 5-year-olds, providing opportunities for age-appropriate, hands-on, and integrated learning. Two-, threeand five-day programs are available for toddlers and preschoolers.

Staff-to-child ratios exceed those required by New York state licensing and NAEYC standards for excellence in care. CCI has been designated a 2016-2019 Breastfeeding-Friendly Child Care Center by the New York State Department of Health’s Child and Adult Care Food Program. Families may be eligible for subsidized child care through the Nassau County Department of Social Services Day Care Unit. Private scholarships may be available for families meeting eligibility guidelines. Active-duty military families may also be eligible for subsidy through U.S. General Services Administration or Child Care Aware of America. Please call 516-463-5194 for more information.

Deane School of Law Clinical Studies Program has 11 clinics: Asylum Clinic; Community & Economic Development Clinic; Criminal Justice Clinic; Deportation Defense Clinic; Entrepreneurship and Intellectual Property Clinic; Federal Tax Clinic; Immigration Clinic; Juvenile Justice Clinic; Law Reform Advocacy Clinic; Robert W. Entenmann Veterans Law Clinic; and Youth Advocacy Clinic. These clinics offer free legal assistance. Potential clients must meet certain financial eligibility requirements. Hofstra Law will host a free Veterans Legal Clinic in November 2018.

The clinic is open to all veterans and offers a free consultation with attorneys who specialize in VA benefits and claims, family law, Social Security disability, employment, USERRA, housing, bankruptcy, debtor/creditor matters, landlordtenant disputes, elder law, tax, wills, estates, Medicare and Medicaid, and more.

This is the ninth one-day clinic organized by the Veterans Legal Assistance Project (VLAP). To date, VLAP has provided more than 200 military veterans with free legal services. More than 30 Hofstra Law students assist attorneys during each clinic.

Making a Difference for LI Immigrants In its first year of operation, the Hofstra Law Deportation Defense Clinic (DDC) has already made great strides in serving immigrant communities on Long Island through a combination of representation, law reform, and community outreach and collaboration.

With its launch in June 2017, the DDC immediately began assisting underserved clients with immigration needs, providing services as of early this year to 46 individuals, representing 17 clients on a variety of matters, and consulting with 29 on their immigration situation. The DDC has received referrals from and collaborated with several organizations on Long Island, including the Legal Aid Societies of Nassau and Suffolk counties, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, CARECEN, Make the Road New York, Empire Justice Center, and Pan American Administrative Service.

The assistance offered by the DDC covers legal needs such as challenges to detention, bond hearings, efforts to reopen final removal orders, motions to suppress evidence obtained in violation of constitutional rights, and affirmative immigration applications. The DDC has secured the release of three detained clients, and student attorneys successfully argued a bond case for a detained client.

The clinic has also developed impact litigation to affect broader immigration policy and practice, launching a firstof-its-kind suit in New York state that challenges the use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers by local law enforcement.

The first law clinic of its kind on Long Island, the Deportation Defense Clinic has collaborated with four other existing Hofstra clinics – Asylum, Criminal Justice, Law Reform Advocacy, and Youth Advocacy – and has cocounseled on cases with the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project and CARECEN-NY. Scott Skodnek Business Development Center (BDC) PROGRAMS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES The Scott Skodnek Business Development Center (BDC) offers programs and services to promote economic development and job creation for the Hofstra community, Long Island, and the region. The BDC’s focus is on providing resources, training, and development for businesses, including the Entrepreneurial Assistance Program (EAP) sponsored by a grant from Empire State Development. The 60-hour training program provides participants with “nuts and bolts” skills to start and expand businesses, determine the feasibility of a venture, and develop a business plan. Capital One Bank sponsors a Business Plan Competition awarding cash prizes ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 to participants submitting a winning plan for business ideas. The program is offered twice a year beginning in March and October.

The BDC provides assistance completing, submitting, and expediting the processing of applications for New York state Minority/Women-Owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) Certification. Receiving M/WBE certification can increase procurement and contract opportunities with state agencies.

If you are a minority or a woman who owns a business that has been in operation for at least one year, you may qualify to apply for M/WBE certification.
