CENTER FOR “RACE, CULTURE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE COLLOQUIA SERIES W E D N E S D A Y, F E B R UA R Y 2 7 , 2 0 1 9 11:15-12:30 | ROOSEVELT 203 Book presentation by Professor SM Rodriguez (Department of Sociology) The Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009 propelled Uganda to the forefront of global media. Media attention opened avenues for transnational cooperation between US-based human and LGBTI rights organizations and kuchu (or LGBTI) Ugandans. The Economies of Queer Inclusion focuses on this transnational relationship, and the complications that arise when international currency and professionalization transform grassroots organizing. Dr. SM Rodriguez is a scholar-activist and Assistant Professor of Criminology and Sociology at Hofstra University. Their research interests and organizing efforts lie in justice movements that are by and for queer people of African descent. Their most recent inquiries center the movement to advance penal abolition and transformative justice, instead of hyper-criminalization and mass incarceration in the US. They are a Core Member of the Brooklyn-based community organizing collective Safe OUTside the System and serve on the Organizing Committee for the Audre Lorde Project in New York City.
