Call for Proposals Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice Faculty Summer Research Grant 2019

The Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice at Hofstra University seeks proposals from full- and part-time Hofstra faculty members for its annual Faculty Summer Research Grant. Applications are welcomed for research projects in any discipline that use “race” as a central category of analysis, and which promise to enrich Hofstra’s academic curriculum. The successful recipient will receive a stipend of $1,500. The grant seeks three specific outcomes: “Vivamus porta

est sedofest.” a) The development a new undergraduate or graduate course, or the enrichment of an existing course. Course proposals many be based within any department but should be suitable for cross-listing with programs such as Africana Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, or other relevant interdisciplinary area on campus. b) A lecture or workshop for students, faculty, staff, and administrators at Hofstra, heightening our understanding of racial and cultural issues relevant to the university community, to be delivered in the academic year 2019-2020. c) The successful grant recipient is expected to submit the work for publication to a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, or to have submitted a book proposal, within one year. The final publication should acknowledge the support of the Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice. Grant proposals are due on May 1, 2019. The grant recipient will be informed of the decision by May 31, 2019, and the funds will be available immediately. Proposals should not exceed 2,000 words in length, including references, and should include the following: a) A project description, highlighting relevance for questions of “race”. b) An explanation of how the project will lead to a new undergraduate or graduate course, or enrich an existing course. c) Plans for publication. The Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice will evaluate all the proposals received with a committee established from among the members of the Center’s Advisory Board.
