My Experience with Hofstra

By Megan “I have much experience with Hofstra. One time we made Gope Boards, and I learned that in the past people in New Guinea believed that the boards scared away the evil spirits.

Also we saw some antique toasters.

There were also other things that were toasters, but they looked like napkin holders.

This is what I learned from Hofstra and also other things.”

Dear Pen Pal, Hi my name is Samantha. I am 8 years old. I have a big sister named Yesica she is 14 years old. I have another baby sister named Andrea she is 1 year old and she is so cute. My mom and dad are from El Salvador. I go to Centennial Ave Elementary School.

Ok I’m back, now I am going to tell you my some of my favorite things first my favorite food is pizza! Pizza is my favorite food because I love the melty cheese.

My favorite thing to play with is SLIME!!! My favorite dessert is ice cream because I like the sprinkles. These are some of my favorite things.

This year my class went to Hofstra. It was super fun. We learned about two artifacts. One is called Gope Board. The other one is called Buddha fragment. I was happy when we went to lunch in the cafeteria where all the college students eat. It was cool when I saw the college students.

Oh yeah! I forgot one more thing. I am going to tell you about my class. My teacher’s name is Mrs.Avena. My best friends are Gabby and Mariela. I am in 3rd grade. On every Tuesday and Friday we have a math challenge. These are some things about me.

First, at Hofstra the first time that I went I saw Marishi-ten and he was Centennial Avenue Elementary School, Roosevelt from the continent of Asia. It was so magnificent because his eyes were gold almost like my eyes. Also the first time that I went to Hofstra I saw Gelede Headdress and it was from Africa. It was so brilliant because in the book that my teacher gave us, I put that I wanted to see things from Africa. In addition, when we went to the library I made a sneaker, queen, and more.

Now let’s talk about the Hofstra trip. It’s sensational, there was an artifact called Marishi-ten it’s from Japan. Did you know Marishi-ten is approximately 500 years old? I cannot forget about that.

Also when we were there we saw a Gope board. It had symbols, a face, and a body.

I am always ecstatic to go to Hofstra and learn about new artifacts. Now it’s time for a poem:

THE GREAT ART CAPER Children and adult companions uncover clues to help solve an Art Caper mystery in the outdoor sculpture collection on Hofstra University’s South Campus. Children The Museum’s distinct “Let’s Explore” Backpacks offer become detectives and have fun while activity-filled ways for children (ages 5-12) and adult companions discovering more about these works. to explore together the outdoor sculpture collection on the University’s beautiful campus. Children then create their own works of art to take home.

“ LET’S EXPLORE” BACKPACKS

Various backpack themes are available. Pick up all backpack and caper activity materials at the Emily Lowe Gallery during open hours year-round until 3 p.m. Return all backpacks by 4 p.m. and keep your completed works of art.

ARTful Adventures

(ages 5-10 with an adult companion) Look, listen, and create together! Bring your child to the Museum to look at and discuss art on exhibit and sculptures on campus. Then engage in a hands-on art project led by Museum educators. Each month’s ARTful adventure focuses on a specific theme to explore and be inspired by.

SECOND SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH September through December • 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.*

All sessions meet at the Emily Lowe Gallery, behind Emily Lowe Hall, South Campus *Check-in: 11:15 a.m.

Advance registration is required. Strollers are not permitted.

Fall sessions: September 8, October 13, November 10, December 8 Fee: $7 per child per session when prepaid ($9 when paid day of the program). Adults free.
