Vice President Normandin explains that both pieces of legislation that are here tonight are from Cabinet last night and these pieces of legislation had to bypass the Rules Committee because it has come up unexpectedly due to recent events i.

Because it did not go through Rules, Senate needs a 3/4 vote to pass this legislation

Background: tomorrow there will be a protest in Plaza West regarding the Thomas Jefferson Statue outside the Student Center

Senator MacCarthy asks why the message is being passed before the polling question when the message mentions the poll 1.

Vice President Normandin says yes it will look silly if the message passes and not the poll

Senator Ismail thinks that if a statement is made then it should be sent to all students or make available on the Hofstra portal

iii. Wednesday, April 4th will be Open Cabinet for anyone interested in attending especially if they are interested in running next semester at 6:30pm and you may come/go as you please iv. Hofstra Gala

1. Senator Craig explains that Gala is held on May 3rd and is a fundraiser for Hofstra where administrators, faculty, students, other Hofstra affiliates attend, it is fun and great for networking 2. Vice President Normandin explains that SGA has money to pay for a table (of 10 seats) at Gala and Senate votes on the ten people they believe should attend; the 10 people with the most votes receive a ticket 3. There is a second SGA sponsored table where any person nominated for a Student Leadership Award is eligible for via a raffle - randomly picked 4. Senator Algarin asks if you are allowed to vote for yourself a. Yes 5. Vice President Normandin will find the Justices/Associates for their votes as well and if you are not here let her know so you can vote also v.

Senator Harley has sign-up sheets 1. Cookout and Conversation with employees of SHACC is especially important; SGA should be there to support as it is in regards to continuing conversation on mental health counseling 2. Senator Harley presents a. SHACC event- Friday April 6th from 12:00pm to 2:00pm and will be great to continue the conversation for mental health counseling and is in a comfortable setting, for asking questions, etc. b. Hofstra’s Pride, Paint, and Plant event - on April 14th from 9am to 12:30pm where you plant gardens and paint fences for elderly in the community who can’t do this for themselves; you get a free t-shirt and free breakfast for participating - the sign up is a google form that will be in the group chat: SGA is the group and Senator Harley is the group leader

vi. April 13th is ResLife’s First Generation Conference - it would be great for SGA to support - referring to students whose parents did not go to college 1. Senator Farooqui adds that it does refer to immigrant students though if they are the first in their family to receive a degree in America 2. Senator Crofts says it is if your parents don’t have 4 year degrees, so it still counts if they have an associate’s degree or gone to a trade school a. Senator Ramirez gives a brief rundown of the old HofUSA menu: they had everything: omelettes, burgers, chicken wings, dumplings, brownie sundaes, funnel cakes, pies, shakes, rice bowls, burrito options, quesadillas, mozzarella sticks, grilled cheese, French toast (breakfast all night), fried raviolis, 1. Senator Schmidt - Sexual Assault Awareness Month programming - will be in the Axinn library - will be smaller display for the first two weeks and then a bigger display for the second two weeks a. There will be tabling required for that week (with a disclaimer reach out if you are uncomfortable) b. They will be showing “The Hunting Ground” date to be determined c. Next Friday is “Take Back the Night” at 6pm; Campus Feminist Collective, Students Advocates for Safer Sex, Queer and Trans People of Color Coalition, and Collegiate Women of Color have a speaker, a speak out, and a march and it would be great to have an SGA presence there 2. Senator Schmidt- Worker Appreciation initiative a. “Humans of NY” but with Hofstra workers displayed on HofCast 3. Senator Osner - wants menstrual products in different spots on campus; she is discussing this with the health center/through the university to see if they have funds for this already so that SGA doesn’t have to allocate it’s own funds to distribute this further 4. Senator Spann - Public Safety initiative focusing on active shooter awareness: first creating an app that would be like “blue light in your pocket” a. Stonybrook University works with a company called Rave and she has been in contact with them about the app and their video that students created to have a plan for what to do in an active shooter scenario b. Talking with Public Safety about permissions that would be needed toward creating a Hofstra specific interview c. Reach out to her if you are interested in researching other universities

Senator Craig - there is a new hire whose job is “risk management� on campus so shooting prevention would fall under this if she wants to reach out to him

d. There is also a training for professors and faculty coming up and she is going to see if they have a plan to advertise to students later 5. Senator Harley - Arbor Day initiative a. In contact with the plant department but there is a conflict on Arbor Day so date tbd b. Basically students would be able to plant and water trees 6. Senator Harley - color printer on campus in progress 7. Senator Harley - workout equipment in Netherlands in progress 8. Senator Ramirez - smoking ban is waiting for feedback from Public Safety 9. Minutes of the 82nd Cabinet Hofstra University Student Government Association

April 4th, 2018 Davison Room 020 Meeting Called to Order at 6:31p.m.

1. New Business a. Colin Sullivan: social media conversation i. Tomasso, Colin, and Carley had a conversation regarding SGA’s social media platforms and how they could be revitalized to increase SGA presence online.

The decision is to either revamp SGA’s current platforms, or create an entirely new one. ii. Colin and Carley’s experience has shown that it can be really difficult to revamp the current platforms, as it can be difficult to build a page from the ground up. iii. SGA would need to be clear about the change in order to maintain transparency.

Moving forward, SGA should consider continuing forward with the current platforms, but being intentional with tone and content.

1. On Facebook today, algorithms make it difficult to gain traction unless you are an individual (groups have a harder time). iv. Colin saw success in just changing his tone on Facebook.

1. Stopped posting so formal, became more casual.

2. Went from two-three sentences per post, to a few words with additional content, such as gifs.

v. Cabinet discussed the question of finding a balance between being a resource online for students, and trying to promote too many club events and losing our platform.

1. Additionally, how does SGA determine which clubs to represent online? a. Discussion of applying campus-wide policies that Appropriations uses when allocating to club events, to PR b. Colin’s advice for current use i. Be more intentional with language ii. Plan ahead instead of operating on day-by-day basis iii. Finding balance between policy and working with the happenings on campus. iv. Colin plans social media three weeks out. v. Need for announcement campaign on changing of SGA’s PR. vi. Look at this week at Hofstra for content. vii.

Network selves with Hofstra accounts that are thriving online.

Balancing informational content with fun content.

2. President Updates a. Upcoming meeting with Houston and Sofia this Thursday, April 5th. b. Cookout and Conversation event this Friday, April 6th at 12:00 PM. This event will be located in the Hofstra USA Gazebo. This event is hosted by the Student Affairs Committee and the Student Health and Counseling Center. i. Chairwoman Denton suggests that we personally advertise the SHACC event to ensure that students are aware. Make students aware that the initiative is still ongoing. c. Town hall will be held on April 25th at Common Hour in the Multipurpose Rooms. SGA attendance is encouraged. d. Student Leadership Awards are coming up on April 29th.

e. Hofstra Gala will be held on May 3rd at 6:00 PM. i. Vote at Senate will occur tomorrow. f. Discussion pertaining to how we will notify student leaders who received Gala tickets that they have won. i. Two emails will be sent out: one informing that the selection process is occurring, and a second announcing the winners. g. With Elections upcoming, referendum questions for the ballot must be submitted to Rules quickly.

Allocations will be sent out next week, and appeals deadline as well.

Appeals close at 5:00 PM next Friday, April 13th.
