ALUMNI PROFILE What prompted you to pursue graduate studies? I was working in real estate and was not satisfied with the amount of knowledge I was acquiring on the job. I could sense a serious gap in my professional expertise and felt that graduate school could help fill the void. Why did you choose the Zarb School EMBA Program? I first visited Hofstra because of its convenience and reputation, and was determining if I should enroll in the traditional MBA program, when Dr. Barry Berman (then director of the EMBA program) entered the room and discussed the Executive MBA. The grouporiented structure and camaraderie between the students and the faculty sounded great. However, the fact that I would have the same degree in only two years was the biggest selling point. I was already in my late 20s/early 30s at that time and wanted to realize the fruits of my labor sooner rather than later.
Andrew Cameron EMBA ’12
Senior Vice President, Republic Bank Leadership Committee, Frank G. Zarb School of Business Alumni Association
What were your interactions like with professors and classmates? Were there professors with whom you developed a strong bond, or whose advice or mentoring had a significant impact? The group-oriented learning structure was extremely effective for me. This dynamic forces each student to learn how to work well with others, a critical ability for anyone aspiring to succeed in a corporate environment. Each professor was approachable and communicative with the class, which further enhanced the program’s overall impact. If you had to choose three words that describe your experience in the Zarb EMBA program, what would they be? Enlightening, enjoyable, and worthwhile. Where did you travel for your global practicum trip? What did you get out of that experience? Beijing, China, and Bangkok, Thailand. Immersing ourselves in completely different cultures provided some much-needed perspective once we returned to finish the program. I thought that the timing of the trip was very appropriate – scheduling it after the challenging first year of the program. How did the Zarb EMBA program help propel your career? While in the program, I went through a career change from real estate development and property management with Nassau County, to a role in the business banking department at Astoria Bank. The EMBA program provided me with the knowledge, and also the newfound confidence to succeed in my new career. Since graduating, I have risen to the level of senior vice president, and have found not only a lot of enjoyment in my career but also a good amount of success. In 2015, I was named to Long Island Business News’ Top 40 Under 40. You are a member of the Executive Committee Zarb Alumni Association – why have you remained so involved with Hofstra and Zarb? I believe that the success I have enjoyed thus far in my career, and any further success I hope to realize in the future, is largely attributed to the time I spent in the EMBA program. “I always wanted to come to the United States and experience its diverse and rich culture. I was impressed with the Zarb School’s reputation in the local area, its strong relationship with local CPA firms, its proximity to New York City, and the vast opportunities offered to students. Zarb School of Business
Hofstra is among an elite group of business schools to earn accreditations for both its business and accounting programs from AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), a rigorous certification that attests to how well the Zarb School prepares its graduates for today’s global business environment.
The career fair organized by the Center for Career Design and Development gave me the opportunity to meet recruiters from major firms and companies. The services provided by Graduate Business Career Relations, such as resume critiques, mock interviews, and alumni social events, prepared me well for the real interviews that I went through. I am also a member of Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting society, which assisted me in building a strong connection with Zarb and Beta alumni. I had a wonderful one-year internship experience with Henry Schein, a Long Island-based Fortune 500 company. With the Zarb credentials and my internship experience on my resume, I was fortunate to join one of the ‘Big Four’ accounting firms after graduation.” Zarb School of Business
