Our Mission Hofstra University Honors College (HUHC) is at the forefront of Hofstra University’s pursuit of academic excellence. We promote intellectual engagement among students, faculty, and the broader Hofstra community.

A History of Success With Biology Students From its inception, HUHC has had a large number of biology majors among its students. This is because HUHC’s curriculum is flexible and adapts to the individual interests and needs of our students, including those who are pursuing highly structured degree programs such as biology.

A Supportive Community

The Department of Biology, within Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, provides a comprehensive, high-quality education that fosters independence in the application of scientific knowledge and the scientific method.

Studying for a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Hofstra University means the opportunity for hands-on research and training at on-campus laboratories and research sites across Long Island. Students can specialize in pre-health, cell/molecular biology, marine and freshwater biology, ecology, secondary education, or conservation biology, among other fields. Our pre-health advisor assists students with course selection, volunteer experiences, and the medical, dental, or veterinary school application process. A series of biology seminars brings to campus noted scientists for in-depth discussions of their work.

Our faculty members offer students opportunities to work with them in their specific areas of research. The department also sponsors a competitive summer fellowship for undergraduate students, during which students work with researchers on topics related to their career goals. Every year, students may enroll in a study abroad program in which they spend 20 days either touring the Galápagos Islands and the Amazon rainforest or studying the marine flora and fauna in Belize.

The HUHC community provides an extraordinary level of support to highly motivated students. With supplemented advising and carefully planned social and cocurricular programming, we ensure that HUHC students feel like part of a community that knows them personally and can respond to their needs as they arise. Along with the Biology Department, HUHC is another home, another comfortable place with friends and peers, and another base of support for academic and social life at Hofstra.

An Extraordinary First-Year Curriculum All entering Honors College students take a linked four-course sequence called Culture and Expression (two courses in the fall and two courses in the spring).

Taught by some of Hofstra’s best faculty, these courses give students a crossdisciplinary view of ancient (fall semester) and modern (spring semester) cultures.

All four Culture and Expression courses fulfill University requirements in the social sciences and the humanities. Thus, they are enriched versions of courses that all Hofstra students are required to take.

Earning Honors Credits in Biology Courses As BS in Biology students move on to their sophomore, junior, and senior years, they may pursue honors credits in regular biology courses. In these “honors options,” students meet with a faculty member who develops an enriched curriculum for a regular biology course that the student is already planning to take. Throughout the semester, the student attends the regular course sessions, and also meets outside of class with a faculty member to discuss the supplementary material. This structure leads to richer faculty-student relationships, and often promotes the mentoring process that is crucial for success in college and beyond. Most importantly, it allows students to focus their honors work where their interests and passions are most fully engaged.

The Workload: It’s About Quality, Not Quantity Honors work has always been defined qualitatively rather than quantitatively.

Typically it is thicker, richer, and more fully informed by theoretical themes.

As a result, many students report that their honors courses bring out the best in them without interfering with other commitments. This makes sense, since most of the time, they are choosing to do their honors work in courses they find intrinsically interesting.

Srilu Garikapati, BS in Biology ’17, is pursuing an MD at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

“ The HUHC experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me a more well-rounded person.

Many of the texts that we read, discussions we had, and essays we wrote taught me how to think critically about a given topic, a skill that was valuable as a bio major and will continue to be valuable as a future physician. My favorite part was the great diversity of classes, from C&E courses to honors seminars. The faculty members had such unique areas of expertise and the availability of different seminars every semester provided endless options of interesting courses to take.”

Celena Gwin, BS in Biology ’17, is pursuing a PhD in Microbiology at Yale University.

“ I came to Hofstra University interested in medicine, but during my sophomore year, I started working in Dr. Nate Rigel’s lab, and that really sparked my interest in pursuing research as a career. In HUHC, meeting some of the wonderful C&E professors led me to take classes I would never have discovered otherwise. I also had the opportunity to take honors options in many of my science classes, which provided more one-on-one time with my professors, enabling great connections and career mentorship. My goals now include running my own lab, working with undergraduate students, and doing outreach for underrepresented minorities in STEM.”
