Caputi, Associate Professor of Engineering, Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science, Hofstra University Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, South Campus Can a love of TV, movies, and teaching be combined with an outgoing and humorous personality to produce a first-year engineering design class that is entertaining as well as educational? That’s just what happened when Dr. Caputi decided to conduct his ENGG 15 lecture class as if it were a live TV show. He facilitates the course in an engaging and humorous style to allow students to have a great deal of fun while actively learning and experiencing the three main areas of study: the informed design process, teamwork, and communication. What should you do when they ask you for different kinds of help? Benjamin Rifkin, dean of Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences – as well as the father of two recent college graduates – shares his perspective on the challenges of parenting college students.

HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY MUSEUM OF ART EXHIBITIONS Other People’s Parties August 13, 2019-March 13, 2020 Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. • Saturday and Sunday, noon-4 p.m. David Filderman Gallery, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, Ninth Floor, South Campus

In today’s hyperconnected social world, images of others have become a ubiquitous part of everyday life, but what is it about other people’s parties that intrigues us so much? Is it idle curiosity or something more? This exhibition, featuring photography from artists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Larry Fink, Danny Lyon, Mary Ellen Mark, and Andy Warhol, calls attention to the highs and lows of our most social occasions, investigating the human impulse to capture party moments through photography and our desire to live vicariously through images of others. Funding has been provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Environmental Impact September 3-December 13, 2019 Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. • Saturday and Sunday, noon-4 p.m. Emily Lowe Gallery, Behind Emily Lowe Hall, South Campus Through a variety of approaches and artistic media, the works of art in Environmental Impact address the consequences of human interaction with the natural environment. Frequently, the artist becomes an activist – creating works of art meant to bring awareness to environmental concerns and sway public opinion. The works featured in this exhibition depict how more recent human intrusion into the natural world has resulted in dire environmental concerns. Featured artists – including Daniel Beltrá, Diane Burko, Edward Burtynsky, Janet Culbertson, Alejandro Durán, Steve McPherson, Alexis Rockman, Barbara Roux, and Steve Rowell – believe that we can begin to achieve change through action. Funding has been provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
