Dear Friends, In the latest issue of Hofstra Magazine, you will see how much we have accomplished during the 2018-2019 academic year, from our focus on research and experiential learning to our commitment to improving the quality of life in our region.

You will read about the Advanced Summer Program in Research (ASPiRe) – a 10-week, intensive program that allows students in the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science to pursue research related to their major, under the supervision of a faculty mentor.

In these pages you will also learn about Hofstra’s Center for Public Archaeology and the work of our anthropology students, who spent several weeks during the summer unearthing details of an important chapter in Long Island’s history.

This magazine also chronicles how our faculty and students are using technology to help meet the region’s critical challenges, including virtual reality simulations designed to improve hurricane and rip current warnings.

These types of programs are cornerstones of a Hofstra education because they provide our students with opportunities for hands-on learning, scholarly research, and community service. And along the way, students also make important discoveries about themselves.

At the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies, two federal grants totaling more than $3 million were awarded this year to create programs that will help the most vulnerable among us by producing a nursing pipeline for underserved communities in addition to increasing the number of nurses certified and trained to work with victims of sexual assault.

You will meet Dr. Janet Lenaghan, who became the Frank G. Zarb School of Business’ first female dean this year.

Dean Lenaghan’s appointment was one of many highlights at the Zarb School in 2019, including the opening of its new building, which is designed to enhance student learning with high-tech, hands-on facilities and dedicated student collaborative spaces.

We’re also delighted to welcome Hofstra’s first chief diversity and inclusion officer, Cornell Craig, who joined the University in April, and will help shape and fortify Hofstra’s continuing commitment to creating an environment that values and celebrates diversity.

We also celebrate the 60th anniversary of our award-winning, student-run radio station, WRHU-88.7 FM, Radio Hofstra University – a community treasure that has been an essential source of information for Long Island while training generations of broadcasting professionals.

You will also find stories that celebrate the success of our alumni, such as Rondell Wescott ’03, a TV/video production major and vice president of Hofstra’s Black/Hispanic Alumni Association, who helped produce an ad for Gillette about toxic masculinity that has been viewed millions of times.

This magazine is more than a snapshot of a single year at Hofstra. It reflects what it means to be a member of the University community and the values we share: intellectual curiosity, innovation, determination, and service.

2018 Financial Report Hofstra’s financial strength reflects increased fundraising activities, strong endowment growth, strengthened operating margins, and enhanced control over expenses, particularly relating to health care and post-retirement benefits. Financial resources have increased by 185 percent during the last 10 years, and Hofstra continues to enjoy debt ratings in the A category from both Moody’s and Standard & Poors.

ofstra University endowment investments grew H to $611 million by 2018, increasing by 508 percent in the last 16 years. The University’s fundraising goals are aimed at providing enhanced scholarship funding to better compete with institutions with significantly larger endowments.

The University continues to make the growth of tuition scholarships a top priority. During the past 10 years, the University has increased scholarship funding by 160 percent to approximately $148.5 million. Every summer, a group of engineering and computer science students spend 10 weeks researching bold scientific questions. Along with scientific breakthroughs, they make important discoveries about themselves.

The Advanced Summer Program in Research (ASPiRe) offers undergraduate engineering and computer science students the opportunity to work alongside faculty mentors on research related to their major. Students receive a $3,600 stipend.

“This is an opportunity for students to gain valuable experience outside of the classroom, said Dr. Sina Rabbany, dean of the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science, who designed the program. “Studies have shown that students who participate in research have significantly increased chances of getting into top-tier graduate programs across the country.”

Biomedical engineering major Dominick Romano ’20 studied endothelial cells with Dr. Nicholas Merna, assistant professor of engineering. Their research may help identify how plaque forms on arteries in cardiology patients, and has applications in metastatic cancer research, vascular development, and regenerative medicine.

“Your commercial made the morning news on GMA [Good Morning America].”

By the time he made it home and turned on the TV, messages were flooding in from excited colleagues. By 10 a.m., the commercial was trending nationwide on Twitter – barely 24 hours after it debuted on YouTube. Wescott took a deep breath as he realized that he’d reached a professional milestone.

“Well, a career goal of mine has been to produce a commercial that goes viral. That was accomplished as of yesterday,” he tweeted at 10:22 a.m. on January 15, 2019.

The new ad, for razor company Gillette, sparked widespread reaction to its call to end “toxic masculinity” in the #MeToo era.

Speaking out against a “boys will be boys” mentality, the commercial drew both high praise and harsh criticism for its updated take on the brand’s 30-year-old tagline, “The best a man can get.”

“He is what we could only hope our graduates turn out to be: talented, respected, accomplished,” Gershon said, “a person who is a member of a greater community and who gives back. One terrific person.”

Many supported the ad’s progressive vision, while others perceived it as male-bashing. More than a dozen celebrities and thought leaders – from Bernice King, Chrissy Teigen, Maria Shriver, and Arianna Huffington to Piers Morgan and Meghan McCain – chimed in about the ad.

“When I first saw the script, I knew that it was going to cause conversation,” said Wescott, a TV/video production alum of The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication. “But that was the intention; we wanted men to look at what was happening in society and ask whether this was the best we could be.”

“It’s really about self-reflection,” he said, “and what men can do to help other men and boys so that the next generation benefits.”

The project began in early 2018 as the creative team at Grey New York, Gillette’s advertising agency, worked for eight months to settle on a concept and finalize the script. Then Wescott stepped in to bring that vision to life. As vice president and integrated producer for Townhouse, the production agency that collaborates with Grey, he led a three-month effort to find a director, cast the commercial, shoot it, and complete postproduction.

It was a huge undertaking. Three weeks of casting in three countries. Fifty-six principal actors and 75 extras. A four-day shoot in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a month of intense editing.

The result: a one-minute, 48-second short film titled We Believe that took on bullying and sexual harassment, two of the country’s biggest hot-button cultural issues. Gillette also announced plans to donate $1 million annually for the next three years to nonprofits that help boys and men achieve their personal best.

easy,” said Wescott, who has produced other ads for Gillette, as well as for national brands such as ExxonMobil, Chobani, and Avis. “It was a huge group effort, and I’m so proud of the work we did and what it stands for.”

He has been overwhelmed by the film’s reach, which includes a combined 66 million+ views on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook and more than 3,000 global media mentions. At its peak, the ad was the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter nationally, and Gillette was the third-highest search term on Google in the United States within a day of its launch.

Growing up in Philadelphia, Wescott’s interest in television and production work began in middle school as a fan of HBO First Look, which offered behind-the-scenes views of upcoming feature films. “I still remember watching an episode on Last Action Hero with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and seeing them use a green screen, and being really interested in and excited about how that worked.”

At Hofstra, he spent long hours building sets for shows and learning camera techniques and was among the class of students that produced the very first Thursday Nite Live televised sketch comedy show. He even found time to sing tenor in the Hofstra Gospel Ensemble.

“Those five are what I’d call gems,” said Wescott, who now lives in Brooklyn and plans to one day open his own company, named DellCott Productions. “They were my television professors from freshman to senior year and taught me all of the production knowledge that I’ve brought with me into the real world.

I would definitely attribute my success to what I learned at Hofstra.”

Peter Gershon was in California accompanying students on the annual Hofstra in LA networking trip when the Gillette ad went viral. Among the group’s visits were the NBC News studios, where they met Alicia Hastey ‘14, an associate producer who was working on a story about the Gillette commercial for NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt.

“The Herbert School dean, the associate dean, and I were so proud to be at our annual reception and to announce to a room of 70 West Coast alumni, parents, prospective students, and our own current students that it was a graduate of our program whose work had gone viral,” Gershon said.

Since graduating, Wescott has returned several times to talk with students and has donated tools such as an animatic storyboard that he used on a past campaign. He is also serving as the current vice president of the Black/Hispanic Alumni Association and as historian/parliamentarian of the Hofstra Alumni Organization.

#DayInThePride The University celebrated its fourth annual #DayInThePride on October 24, 2018, filling social media feeds with the everyday and extraordinary things that happen in the Hofstra community during a single 24-hour period. The Pride shared photos and videos capturing their lab experiments, study abroad experiences, jobs and internships, and much more.

The official hashtag trended on Twitter throughout the day in New York and was even a finalist in the Shorty Awards, which honor the best content creators and producers in social media.

SERVICE A seminar room in Joseph G. Shapiro Family Hall has been named in honor of Professor Emeritus of History Michael D’Innocenzo, the University’s longest-serving faculty member.

early 1980s, he was selected as national chairperson of the United Campuses to Prevent Nuclear War. In 1985, he and his wife helped found the Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives.

“Mike D’Innocenzo is my friend, my mentor, role model, hero, and perhaps most importantly, my teacher,” said Steven A. Meyerowitz, Esq. ’76, president of Meyerowitz Communications, at a ceremony naming the room.

D’Innocenzo was appointed Hofstra’s Harry H. Wachtel Distinguished Teaching Professor for the Study of Nonviolent Social Change in 1998. The professorship was named for Long Islander Harry Wachtel, who worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. D’Innocenzo established the Hofstra Public Policy Institute in association with the Kettering Foundation and was a founding member of the Hofstra Center for Civic Engagement. He was also appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Issues Forums Institute, and, in 2014, he was honored for lifetime achievement by the Association of Italian American Educators (AIAE).

“I met Mike in 1972 as a 17-year-old freshman,” Meyerowitz said. “His classes were educational as well as exciting, stimulating, thought-provoking, insightful, and necessary.

He taught his students how to weigh evidence, evaluate arguments, and draw conclusions. He didn’t teach us what to think but how to think.”

More than 100 colleagues, friends, and former students came together for the ceremony, including Stanislao Pugliese, professor of history; Benjamin Rifkin, dean of Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; Andrea Libresco, professor of education and D’Innocenzo’s wife; and Carolyn “Rusti” Eisenberg, professor of history.

“For Mike, history matters deeply,” New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli ’76 said in a congratulatory letter. “The intellectual work we do to understand the past does not stop in the library, the classroom, or at the edge of campus. It continues into the present and into the world we all share. As a teacher, but also over a lifetime of civic activism and community leadership, Mike D’Innocenzo has demonstrated the power of learning to inform our debates and spark positive change to make our society better.”

For his part, D’Innocenzo shows no signs of slowing down.

He and Professor Martin Melkonian, an adjunct professor of economics at Hofstra, will team-teach Introduction to Peace Studies in fall 2019. The two men, both 83, recently gifted $25,000 each to Hofstra’s Institute for Peace Studies to establish two fellowships to fund education, research, and student travel to conflict-torn areas such as Central America and Bosnia.

Michael D’Innocenzo came to Hofstra in 1960 and received the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1966.

Throughout his teaching career at Hofstra, he has been recognized for his teaching, writing, and community activities focused on civil rights and social justice. In the Hofstra

FIRST CHIEF DIVERSITY and INCLUSION OFFICER APPOINTED Cornell L. Craig, formerly assistant dean for diversity and inclusion at Pace University, became Hofstra’s first chief diversity and inclusion officer on April 1. Craig has more than a decade of experience as an administrator working on campus diversity, inclusion, and multicultural issues.

He was chosen following a national search and interview process conducted by a committee of faculty, administrators, and students.

“Creating this leadership position is part of Hofstra’s continuing commitment to diversity and inclusion,” said President Rabinowitz. “Cornell Craig has a track record of developing strategies and programs that foster a campus environment that values diversity, and an ability to collaborate across disciplines and departments that is essential for the success of this newly created role.”

The chief diversity and inclusion officer, who reports directly to the president, will work collaboratively with academic and administrative departments, and with students and the surrounding community. Among the key responsibilities of the role are establishing and chairing a University Diversity and Inclusion Council that will develop and implement a diversity strategic plan; develop diversity and retention plans for faculty, administrators, and staff; and create education and training programs on diversity and inclusion, including bias, sensitivity, and cultural competency.

Craig was at Pace University since 2009, first as director of multicultural affairs and diversity programs and, since December 2017, as assistant dean for diversity and inclusion.

At Pace, he established a peer mentoring program for first-year students of color and a support program for men of color who are first-generation college students. He also 14

served on the Pace LGBTQ Task Force and oversaw the creation of the Campus LGBTQ Center. In addition, Craig led workshops and training seminars to build coalitions among cultural student groups, faculty, and staff, and coordinated diversity awareness training for first-year students.

He was also responsible for diversity training for a wide range of campus constituencies, including resident assistants and resident directors, faculty, and student groups. He also served as a Title IX trainer for the Pace Athletic Department and created the annual compliance reporting and assessment.

“I look forward to working with all members of the Hofstra community to build on the success they’ve already had in creating a diverse, inclusive climate that recognizes and celebrates the contributions of all,” Craig said.

Before his tenure at Pace, Craig spent three years with Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. There he established the Office of Minority Student Programs, for which he served as the inaugural director. During his time at Bellarmine, the university saw a 19% increase in enrollment of students of color, and 50% increase in participation in cultural campus activities. He has also served as a guest lecturer and adjunct faculty member at Pace and Bellarmine.

Cornell L. Craig earned a BA in Mass Communications from Southern Illinois University and an MBA from W. Fielding Rubel School of Business at Bellarmine University.

He was an All-American wide receiver at Southern Illinois and was named Division I-AA Player of the Year during his senior year. He holds several university records, including most receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches, and was inducted into Southern Illinois University’s Hall of Fame in 2008.

WINNING VENTURES

A company that makes high-performance track spikes for female sprinters, the inventor of an organic eyebrow gel, and a low-cost, accessible mobile platform to fight addiction won top honors at the 2019 Hofstra-Digital Remedy Venture Challenge.

The contest, in its seventh year, awarded total prizes valued at $75,000 to help student entrepreneurs bankroll their startups. The Venture Challenge is sponsored by Digital Remedy, a digital marketing company, and run by Hofstra’s Center for Entrepreneurship.

“Everyone brought their ‘A’ game,“ said Mike Seiman, chairman and CEO of Digital Remedy, a member of Hofstra’s Board of Trustees, and chairman of the Center for Entrepreneurship Advisory Board. Seiman, a Hofstra alumnus, started his company while he was still a student.

“This might have been the best year we’ve had yet in terms of the quality of the presentations,” he said. The Venture Challenge provides students with business ideas with mentoring through a bootcamp program and pitch preparation sessions.

This year’s winners include: SECOND PLACE, and a total prize package of $21,000 – Tania Speaks ’22, an entrepreneurship major and founder of Brow Boost, an organic eyebrow gel. \ FIRST PLACE, and a total prize package of $42,000 – Elisabeth Paulina ’19, a mechanical engineering major, founder of Lynx, a company that makes track spikes that improve performance and help female sprinters maintain the right posture.

and founder of Cress Health, a startup that leverages mobile technology to fight addiction.

— President Stuart Rabinowitz DR. JANET A. LENAGHAN, professor of management and entrepreneurship, was appointed dean of Hofstra’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business in January 2019, becoming the first woman to lead the school in its 50-year history.

“Dean Lenaghan is an exceptional scholar, an experienced administrator, and a natural leader, with the tenacity and the dynamism to lead Zarb into a new era of excellence,” President Stuart Rabinowitz said. “She has the ability to lead faculty, connect alumni, forge new partnerships with businesses, and relate to student needs. She possesses all the traits and skills necessary to ensure the Zarb School of Business continues to thrive.”

Dr. Lenaghan served as vice dean of the Zarb School since 2016 and was later appointed acting dean. During that time, the school moved into a new 52,000-square-foot building designed to enhance student learning through innovative hands-on facilities and dedicated student collaborative spaces. In addition to the new building, the school expanded its online offerings and enhanced the first-year student experience. Provost Herman A. Berliner, who worked closely with Dr. Lenaghan in the dean’s office, noted that as both a faculty member and administrator, she served with distinction.

“It’s been an honor to work with such talented and motivated faculty and students to grow and develop the outstanding programs at the Zarb School of Business,” Dr. Lenaghan said. “This is an exciting time for the Zarb School, and it’s a privilege to serve as dean as we work together to educate the next generation of business leaders.”

A two-time recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award, in 2003 and 2016, Dr. Lenaghan has taught a variety courses in the undergraduate, graduate, online, and executive programs. An alum of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business at Hofstra (MBA), she also earned a DPS from Pace University and a BBA from Adelphi University.

An expert in the field of human resources management, Dr. Lenaghan regularly presents her research at academic conferences and is routinely quoted in media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal. She currently serves on the board of Long Island Software & Technology Network (LISTnet). Dr. Lenaghan joined Hofstra University in 1989. She spent nearly a decade as director of human resources before joining the full-time faculty in 2000, earning tenure in 2007.

BUSINESS The Frank G. Zarb School of Business celebrated the January 2019 opening of its new building with an open house, tours, and a panel discussion featuring prominent business executives.

The panel, called Meet the C-Suite: Leading the Workforce of Tomorrow, featured Hofstra alumni Stella Mendes, senior managing director, Forensic and Litigation Consulting at FTI Consulting, and Michael Roberge, chief executive officer at MFS Investment Management. The panel was moderated by Hofstra alum Frank G. Zarb, senior advisor to Promontory Financial Group, an IBM company, and former chairman and CEO of the NASDAQ Stock Exchange.

The new Business School Building is a 52,000-square-foot space equipped with a new Behavioral Research in Business Lab, an enhanced Center for Entrepreneurship, makerspace/startup incubator, multiple areas for student independent and collaborative study, as well as administrative, faculty, and student club offices.

Twenty Northwell Health emergency nurses were certified this summer as sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE), becoming the first class to graduate from the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies SANE program.

“We are very proud of the inaugural class of sexual assault nurse examiners. These innovative and courageous nurses are prepared to deliver trauma-informed care to victims of sexual assault,” said Kathleen Gallo, PhD, MBA, RN, dean and professor of the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies and senior vice president of Northwell Health. “They are leading the way in shaping how Northwell Health will respond to the special needs of these victims.”

A SANE nurse is often the first person to help sexual assault survivors begin to heal, making sure they feel safe as they are treated in the emergency room. The absence of SANE nurses at hospitals often re-victimizes those who have suffered a sexual assault by having them recount

of GOOD what happened to emergency room personnel, and then again to a nurse, physician, or other clinician.

SANE nurses act as personal advocates, staying upwards of six hours with their patients as they gain their trust, ask difficult questions, conduct physical exams to check for evidence and injury, provide emergency contraceptives, and maintain evidence for law enforcement.

The Hofstra Northwell SANE program is the only university- and health system-based program in New York state. It is composed of 40 hours of classroom training and 300 hours of hands-on clinical training and is made possible through a federal grant that aims to increase the number of SANE nurses in New York.

The grant, Creating an Integrative Family Nurse Practitioner Value Based Student to Practice Model, will support the graduate nursing program’s innovative academic-practice partnership to prepare primary care/advanced practice nurses to work in rural and underserved communities.

It was awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

“Nurse practitioners play a vital role in the healthcare delivery system,” Dean Gallo said.

“This grant helps us provide enhanced education opportunities and resources to our advanced practice nurses.”

“This program is important for nursing to keep us evolving and growing so we work to the full breadth of our scope of practice,” said Amy Smith, a nurse practitioner at LIJ Forest Hills and coordinator of the SANE program. “Having SANE nurses in our hospitals benefits all of the diverse communities we serve so that no patient who seeks SANE services needs to be transferred out of our facilities and out of their neighborhoods.”

Digging for Stories

The glass bottles, tobacco pipe stems, buttons, ceramic fragments, and animal remains unearthed at Rock Hall Museum reveal a compelling story, and Hofstra University anthropology students are proud to help tell it. The recovered items are reminders of a chapter in Long Island history not often discussed: The region was once home to a sizable slave population.

“It’s been really exciting to begin piecing together the history of the people who lived here,” said anthropology major Autumn Christopher. “It’s a history that wasn’t reflected in town and census records. Slavery on Long Island and in New York is not talked about much. I’m glad to be a part of helping to get the word out.”

Archaeology often conjures up images of dinosaur bones and scenes from Indiana Jones movies. But Dr. Bradley Phillippi, who teaches Anthropology 33 (Archaeology Field Methods), said the work he and his students do at a historic mansion in Lawrence, New York, is no less exciting.

“We may not be excavating at the base of pyramids or abandoned temples,” he said, “but the students know this is important work because we are looking for the items and tools used, broken, discarded, and deposited in the ground by people who have been largely forgotten. We’ll put them back together to learn about their lives.”

Rock Hall, a Georgian Colonial landmark house, was built in 1767 for Josiah Martin, an English sugar plantation owner who was born sand raised on the island of Antigua. At the time of his retirement, Martin could have retreated to the idyllic English countryside. Instead, he purchased 600 acres on Long Island to build his dream home near New York Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean.

Most significant, Phillippi said, is that Martin owned a number of enslaved laborers. “The most at one time in what is now Nassau County and maybe even all of Long Island,” he said.

In the early 19th century, the home was taken over by the Hewletts, an established Long Island family. They used it as their farm home, a guest home, and a summer home.

Eventually, the Hewletts gifted Rock Hall to the Town of Hempstead.

“Rock Hall is an iconic site for the Town of Hempstead,” said Phillippi. “But the history of the people of color who lived here – both enslaved and free – is something that the community is just starting to reconcile. They contributed a lot to the making of this site, and so little is known about them.”

The Hofstra team worked an area where a few outbuildings, constructed in the early 19th century, once stood. Using a trowel, the students searched for artifacts by meticulously digging a few centimeters at a time. When they excavated enough earth to fill a 10-liter bucket, they put the soil through a large sieve to recover any additional items they might have missed.

After sieving, they worked with a teammate to record the horizontal and vertical locations of the recovered artifacts, a process called point provenience. The students also sketched the items they found and the ground surface.

Artifacts were bagged, numbered, and transported back to Hofstra’s Center for Public Archaeology for further analysis and identification.

“That’s why the Center for Public Archaeology exists,” Phillippi said. “There are groups of people absent from our local narratives. We are here to make a record of their histories and make sure they are remembered.”

Autumn Christopher, who is planning to pursue a career in forensic archaeology, said the experience was exactly what she hoped it would be. “I love getting my hands dirty,” she said. “My previous archaeology classes were in a classroom, and while they were very interesting, there is something to be said for being out in the field – digging and discovering the things these people used.”

Although there are more traditional academic components to the class, the majority of the work involves the excavation.

“There’s only so much you can teach about archaeology in the classroom,” Phillippi said. “While there are other summer courses that are more conventional, this one is 100 percent outdoors.”

Beyond developing their archaeological skills, Phillippi said students also build skills that they can use broadly – regardless of the profession they pursue. “Attention to detail. Patience. Drive and motivation. An appreciation for history.”

Anthropology major Sarah Klush ’20 feels a responsibility to do right by the people whose history they examined. “It’s important to understand the past and to know how we got to where we are today,” she said. “Each generation impacts the next, and knowing who was here before you helps you find a better path to the future.”

Over 1,500 items were distributed at Hofstra University’s first professional clothing drive on February 27, 2019.

Hosted by the University’s Career Center, the Career Closet was created to support students looking for attire for interviews, internships, career fairs, and the workplace. Hofstra is the first university on Long Island and one of the few in New York to host a professional clothing drive for students.

Suits, ties, dresses, and shoes were some of the many items available for students at the Career Closet. Stylists from Phi Alpha Delta and other student organizations were also on hand to work with “shoppers” to choose the best items for their needs.

The event was co-sponsored by the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement’s “How to Adult” series; Hofstra’s Division of Student Affairs; Green Key Resources; David Lerner Associates Inc.; Chernoff Diamond; Burner Law Group, P.C.; and Lessing’s Hospitality Group. Additionally, Max Mara donated 18 boxes of professional attire for the drive.

Angela Rienzo is sitting in a living room when a window suddenly shatters, unleashing a pelting rain and violent wind. The water rises.

Sirens blare. Objects fly through the air.

She’s in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane.

Rienzo, a geology major, is one of several students assisting Dr. Jase Bernhardt, assistant professor of geology, environment, and sustainability, with a virtual reality project that gives people the experience of being in a hurricane – Categories 1 through 5. The aim is to improve storm warnings and preparation.

“We’re working to make people safer,” said Rienzo ’20.

“This made me realize that’s what I want to do after college.”

Over the past year, Bernhardt and his students have surveyed people on campus and in Long Beach, New York (which was hard hit by Superstorm Sandy in 2012) to gauge their reactions to the virtual hurricane experience. The study found that people are more likely to heed storm warnings if they have a virtual experience.

“We’re trying to show that people who watch a simulation of a hurricane are more likely to respond with precautionary measures,” said Bernhardt, who also runs Hofstra’s meteorology program.

“The extra layer of virtual reality will help people take warnings more seriously.”

Bernhardt shared some of these findings – and the opportunity for the virtual storm experience – at the National Weather Service’s annual Hurricane Awareness Tour in May 2019. He also co-authored a paper with some of his undergraduate students and colleagues in Hofstra’s Educational and Research Technology Services. The paper was accepted for publication in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS), a leading meteorology journal.

“Given their strength, size, and natural beauty, hurricanes have always fascinated me,” Bernhardt said.

“But seeing how impactful and devastating they can be is what really inspired me to learn more and inform others.”

And Bernhardt’s virtual research isn’t over. He and his students have begun a new study – this one about the reactions of residents in Long Beach to virtual rip currents.

Over 450 alumni, students, faculty, staff, and administrators gathered together in March for a four-day celebration of Radio Hofstra University’s 60th anniversary, and the station’s newest inductees into its Radio Hall of Fame.

Over the years, WRHU-88.7 FM (previously WHCH and WVHC) has won some of the industry’s most coveted awards, including being named noncommercial radio station of the year by the National Association of Broadcasters in the prestigious Marconi Awards competition in 2014 and 2017. Its student reporters have won national and regional honors, and have worked alongside professional journalists in covering events ranging from political conventions, presidential debates, and inaugurations to major league playoff and championship games. WRHU is also the only studentoperated college radio station to produce and distribute live game broadcasts for a professional sports franchise, the New York Islanders.

JUSTIN WRIGHT-FOREMAN Hofstra University men’s basketball guard Justin Wright-Foreman capped an incredible senior season with his selection by the Utah Jazz in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft. WrightForeman, who was selected 53rd overall, is the 12th player in program history to be selected in the NBA Draft and the first since Charles Jenkins (Golden State Warriors) in 2011.

The 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, his second in a row, and an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American, Wright-Foreman finished second nationally in scoring this past season with 27.1 points per game. He was a finalist for the Jerry West Award as the nation’s top shooting guard, while earning United States Basketball Writers Association District II Player of the Year and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Player of the Year accolades. He also earned first team honors from the CAA, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association.

In his final season, Wright-Foreman led Hofstra men’s basketball to a 27-8 record that included a 16-game win streak, the CAA regular season championship, and a bid to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT).

Wright-Foreman closed his incredible Hofstra career with 2,327 points, which ranks second all-time in program history behind Jenkins (2,513). The Queens, New York, native also ranks second in program history with 277 three-pointers. Wright-Foreman ended his career by scoring in double figures in 88 consecutive games, the seventh-longest streak in NCAA Division I basketball history.

MEET DANIELLE SANTOS ATKINSON Danielle Santos Atkinson was named Hofstra’s 12th women’s basketball head coach on April 13, 2019.

She has 13 years’ experience coaching in Division I, including four seasons as an assistant coach at Hofstra from 2006 to 2010. Santos Atkinson also served as an assistant coach in the Atlantic Coast, Southeastern, and Missouri Valley Conferences, with stops at Pittsburgh, Florida State, Kentucky, and Illinois State. A dynamic leader, Santos Atkinson has six NCAA Tournament appearances and four WNIT appearances under her belt.

HOW HAVE YOUR PAST EXPERIENCES PREPARED YOU TO BE A HEAD COACH?

WHY DID YOU GET INTO COACHING?

Our ultimate goal is to win a Colonial Athletic Association championship and go to the NCAA Tournament. We are going to do everything we can as a staff and as a team to bring the program back to where it once was and where we know it can be. In addition to on-court achievements, we also want to make sure that all of the young women that are part of this program have an outstanding collegiate experience [and] that they grow as people and graduate from our great university.

I love basketball and playing a part in young people’s lives. I love seeing them set out to be better at something and achieve that. I also love being part of a team and competing and teaching and motivating others.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE JOB AT HOFSTRA? The fact that I had been here before. I had a really enjoyable four years here as an assistant coach. Then there are the people who are associated with the University and with the program. That was one of the biggest draws for me, as everyone here wants to see Hofstra women’s basketball and Hofstra Athletics be successful. Everyone is invested and willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. When you add the outstanding athletic facilities that we have to offer and the fact that Hofstra is an outstanding place to get an education, all these things made this position one that I wanted to pursue.

I have had wonderful mentors and learned a great deal at each of my former schools. I have had a variety of responsibilities that were head coach-like in other positions, so everything I have done up until this point has prepared me for this. Two of Hofstra University’s most successful athletic programs – women’s soccer and volleyball – burnished their legacies in 2018, capturing Colonial Athletic Association championships and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

Led by Head Coach Simon Riddiough, women’s soccer captured its fifth CAA title overall and second in a row with a 2-0 victory at James Madison University. Hofstra did not allow a goal in three CAA Championship tournament games on its way to a seventh NCAA Tournament appearance.

VOLLEYBALL

The Pride traveled to No. 4 seed Boston College to open NCAA Tournament play and came away with a 4-1 victory before losing to Wisconsin in the second round. Hofstra was 16-6-1 in 2018 – the third most in program history, matching the 1994 squad.

The volleyball program, led by 2018 CAA Coach of the Year Emily Mansur, captured both the CAA regular season and tournament championships to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time. It also marked the Pride’s first CAA championship since 2014. Hofstra defeated James Madison in five sets in the CAA finals to win the tournament.

The Pride drew defending national champion Nebraska in the first round of the NCAA Championship and saw its season end with a loss to the Cornhuskers before a crowd of 8,358 fans in Lincoln, Nebraska. Hofstra finished the year with a 25-8 record – the most victories since the 2014 squad racked up 28 wins.

Both programs also had players earn major awards from the CAA. Madeline Anderson repeated as Defensive Player of the Year, and Miri Taylor picked up Rookie of the Year accolades in women’s soccer. On the volleyball side, Luisa Sydlik was Setter of the Year, and Aisha Skinner was named Rookie of the Year.
